We are doing our project on face recognition. We are done with our project.We want to use this as a method to login into the system by detecting the face at login screen.
How to go about it?
Is there a way to include a profile pic within the GUI login prompt for Fedora 11?
I have the profile pic set in the "About Me" configuration page, and this will show up in my toolbar in the upper right hand corner, but when I log out and go to select my login name from the list of users within the login prompt, I don't see my pic, just the generic user picture.
Is there a way to set this? I have multiple users using this machine. It would be nice if they can just visually scan for their picture to login with.
My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.
I'm running Jaunty, and I'm trying to play a film that is .mkv format through VLC. Everytime I try to play it, the screen either freezes up completely, or it sends me to the login screen. It's only with this one film, though. I have a number of other films in this format, and they all work perfectly.I'm a bit of a newb, so I'm not entirely sure where I would find out what went wrong
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got rid of my Dell P990 CRT and replaced it with a Samsung B2330H LCD. I got the resolution changed to 1920x1080 at 60hz through System/Preferences/Monitors and the new display looks great! There is one problem, though: the computer boots into a resolution that is not supported by the new monitor. As a result, the login screen is blank. The monitor puts a little floating message on the screen that says, "Optimum Resolution is 1920x1080..." When I start up, I hear the "bongo sound" and I hit ENTER, then enter my password, then ENTER again, and the computer desktop appears in 1920x1080 and all is well. But how do I get the login screen to appear in 1920x1080?

I have installed the Startup Manager, but it does not allow 1920x1080 to be selected. I have also tried using Startup Manager to select other resolutions, but the login screen is still blank.
Isn't there some trick to force the login screen to appear in a specific resolution using xrandr? What file does this command go into? Maybe my old configuration files from my Dell monitor are interfering?
What is the difference between /usr/local/include and /usr/include? When I compile my program, is both /usr/local/include and /usr/include avaliable? Can I copy a file from /usr/local/include to /usr/include?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
I want to set up the GDM login screen in vertical orientation = left = (xrandr -o 1) due to my monitor.

Since I have configured my x rortation only be xrandr command by shell init script, and never had configured by GUI setting, the monitors.xml was not created. When I done with GUI, the file is created as usual.
Then I copied to
/var/lib/gdm3/.config/monitors.xml
Finally works as expected.
I have recently installed Debain Testing 11/01/2016 build on my laptop..
Using gdm3 as my displayManager and Gnome3..
After i put my Login ID and Password the System Hangs..
And if i use lightdm then it hangs during boot..
I searched on the internet and notice that the setup gui for changing gnome login screen is no longer available (e.g. gdmsetup does not come up with a theme that can change login screen theme.)What is the right way or where there may contain such information? I google but most of returned are prior 2.30.2, which is the version currently I am using.

Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further.But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.

I have been unsuccessfully attempting to change my personal login avatar, following the advice on the Arch Linux wiki: [URL] .... I began by naming my desired avatar .face and saving it in my home directory. That didn't work, but I was not discouraged because the wiki mentioned that there were issues with the ".icon method". So I then installed accountservice, created a directory for my user, and saved my desired avatar as a 96x96 PNG named username.png in the appropriate directory (making sure that it had the necessary permissions, of course). That didn't work either...
I'm on Debian testing Gnome 3.18 and I searched, tried, searched and tried... no way! numlock will always stays off whenever I reboot and reach login screen.

- installed numlockx
- added those lines to /etc/gdm3/Init/Default (if [ -x /usr/bin/numlockx ]; then /usr/bin/numlockx on fi)

After applying upgrades to debian 8.2 on a lenovo yoga3 notebook and a reboot I am not able to login into my GNOME desktop. The login screen stays black. If I press the power button to suspend I can see the login screen with default background for ~1 second before it turns black again. What can I do to fix this issue? Is there a way to login via terminal and do a rollback? Can I use my home folder an personal settings if i reinstall debian and keep the /home partition?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running an LMDE install, but with the Sid repositories.Everything has been fine until yesterday's updates, after which I can't boot normally. The boot hangs at the login screen, and nothing works - not the mouse, the keyboard, the touchpad, nothing, and it requires holding the power switch to get out. I can boot to a root recovery console, but networking doesn't work at all there. I can run startx there and get an X desktop as root, and networking still doesn't work. No wireless, no ethernet, no nothing. From the recovery console I can run shutdown, and when prompted for a password, can enter Ctrl-D, which immediately drops me back to X, to the normal login screen, which now works normally, and I get a normal X session in which everything works. This is the same for all installed kernels, including 3 versions of the Liquorix kernel and the standard Squeeze kernel. It would appear to be something in my settings in /home, but I can't find anything that looks suspicious. I ran smxi again after booting through the root console, without any improvement.

Is there something I'm missing? And yes I played the ISO in VLC and had it play with sound fine.
How can i change that login window's font rendering, i mean that screen which you can select user and type password. Is anybody have the experience for tweaking gnome login font or background image?

I have used avidemux to cut a mp4 file, choosing just a part of it, and I have discovered it automatically adds "avidemux" to the beginning of the name of the file, plus the author of the file and that I cannot edit the file to erase it. Note that I talk about "right click - properties", and that the file, as seen from home folder dont include the "avidemux" prefix, but if, for instance, I run the file with VLC, "avidemux" will appear, and that is annoying. how to delete that annoying avidemux prefix?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.
I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.
How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10
yesterday i installed slim login manager on my computer (eee pc 1018p, ubuntu 11.04), and now it cannot get passed the ubuntu loading screen (with orange dots underneath) when booting. i tried booting into recovery mode and that didn't work either. i also left the computer trying to boot overnight and that didn't work.
basically, during this loading screen that should eventually bring you to the login screen, i can alt+tab to see the progress of the load. the progress is stuck on

I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.
I have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?

When I try to login with my username, the one I created when I installed the OS, it seems to try to login but almost immediately kicks back to the login screen. No authentication error it just seems to just logout? The only change I made since last successful login was to add ". .alias" to the .profile file - the only entries in the .alias file are comments and "alias" commands. I have one other username but it is not in the sudo's list of users so I can not change anything in the master login.
