Debian Multimedia :: Web Console Doesn't Work In Iceweasel 6
Aug 22, 2011Just as the title says: I installed iceweasel 6 in debian squeeze (via mozilla.debian.net) and while errors and requests are captured in the web console, I simply cannot use it to evaluate arbitrary javascript I type in it.
Does anyone have this problem as well? It's been like this since v5 as well. I already tried purging and reinstalling, as well as running with another profile.

Apr 8, 2011I can't get flash controls to work. If the video auto-plays, it starts just fine, if not, I'm out of luck. I've tried reinstalling flash through the software center. Even if it autoplays, I can't control volume or pause or anything. I'm at the mercy of whatever is already there.

Jan 26, 2010not sure exactly when this broke, but for some reason I'm not able to use CTRL-ALT-F1 anymore to fall back to the first virtual console.I can kill X with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE just fine, but I'd like to be able to get a normal shell to kill things when I've messed too much with graphical stuff.

Feb 6, 2011I set up Debian Linux s390 port to run on Hercules on an i386 computer. I know that I can now develop apps or run apps that are ported to zLinux/s390 Linux, and perhaps also learn more about the special features of the s390/zseries processors (or at least most of their features). I've also read that there is no reliability/availability/serviceability advantage to running this in emulation since the underlying hardware is not-fault tolerant. Is that even true, given the redundant/fault-tolerant computations performed by the emulated processors? Does anyone know of other good reasons to run zLinux in emulation?

Oct 15, 2010I just had the idea of going back to command line music players and mp3blaster is what that came to my mind. I am running Kubuntu 10.10 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop with the default kernel. In an archived thread I read
mp3blaster -s /dev/dsp
would do the trick. But since all sound devices in my current laptop seem to be listed under /dev/snd as pcmC0D0p etc. I tried using,
mp3blaster -s /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
and this gave a sound device control error.
Just did some digging around and saw that I didn't have any oss modules running. Are they the culprits? If not how would I make mp3blaster use my current devices else do I need to reconfigure my kernel to have the oss modules?

Then I found this link: Skype, KDE4, OpenSUSE 11.3 and PulseAudio Doesn't sound bad, but I also use Wine and Pulseaudio is said to be not compatible with it.
So, if Pulseaudio is enabled with setup-pulseaudio --enable, how do I disable it should I find problems with Wine? Is Pulseaudio really needed to make the mic to work, or it depends on what I want to use it for?

Dec 15, 2010This is an eternal problem with radio-canada streaming content, and it seems every new version of ubuntu we have to go through different processes to get it to work.In some previous versions, following the guidelines provided by radio-canada worked, but they are quite outdated now and some of the packages they refered to do not even exist anymore. I make regular reports of their website, but users complaining only end up by, if they answer at all "it works on our computers so it should work on yours" or "why don't you use windows".
Basically, their guides consist of removing the totem totem plugin, installing flash-plugin-nonfree and the mplayer plugin.I read somewhere the mplayer plugin is now gecko-mediaplayer, which I installed, but the videos still don't work.

May 31, 2010I can't make sound work in Pidgin. I've tries every single method (aplay %s with Command, ALSA, Automatic etc.). Anyway, I once was hearing sounds, but later they've gone again. I have ALSA set up in 'System - Prefs - Sound' and also in 'Multimedia Systems Selector', Debian Testing (sid) 2.6.32-3-686. I also cannot set the tray icon to 'Blink On New Message'. When I recieve a message - I only see a smilie there, no 'blinking'.

Dec 5, 2010I have the latest version of Debian Lenny AMD64 installed on my brother's computer. I am trying to get Adobe versions of flash to install on his computer. It seems no matter what I do I get the freeware version installed which unfortunately is not up to the task. If I try to remove the freeware version the package manager tells me it needs to remove the gnome as well. How can I keep the gnome and at the same time get Adobe version to install. Yes I have a multimedia repository installed and I tried reinstalling Mozilla Adobe package with no success.
Searching forums did not result in any helpful ideas.Things I have already found out from reading this forum.-I have to purge all freeware version of the Adobe flash plug-in. I can't seem to find a way to do this without removing the gnome desktop. It seems that the plug-in is a dependency for the gnome desktop environment. Yes I want to continue to use the gnome desktop environment. I have to install flashplayer-mozilla package from the Debian multimedia nonfree repository. That I can successfully do, and have done so without success. It installs successfully, but it still shows version 9 of the plug-in. I believe version 9 is the free version. What I would like to use the free version, it's just not compatible with the websites I go to.

Mar 10, 2011There seems to be something that has changed in the newest stable Debian - I chose kde4 as my default desktop at installation, and it worked fine. Then I went and changed some options in both /var/run/kdm/kdmrc and /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc, something I have done many times before without problems.
However, when I tried to restart kdm with /etc/init.d/kdm, things didn't come up - no X, no kdm. When I rebooted the machine everything seemed fine, so I thought the problem was solved; but this morning I wanted to change something else - I don't want kdm to remember the last user, and I don't want to see a list of users either. Now dkm and X fail even when I reboot; I also find that /var/run/kdm/kdmrc has disappeared - I am certain I didn't remove it.
The strange thing, when I try /etc/init.d/kdm, I can kdm hanging around all alone in the process list, but no X or greeter. So what is going on - what should I have done instead? And can I repair it? I can of course reinstall the system, but I hate to think that we can't manage better in Linux.

Anyway, my problem is that if I'm in any console at all, (aside from the TTY console and such) and I try to go multiple lines, this is what happens:

Feb 12, 2010First of all, this is not famous problem, which solves by unchecking "Allow to control the pointer using the keyboard". My numpad navigation does not work in console under X. Nor in Konsole/KDE/Kubuntu (9.10), nor in Console/Gnome/Ubuntu (9.04). It works in graphics applications. It works in system console in text mode (Ctrl+Alt+F1..6) too. But in Konsole I can't navigate cursor by numpad arrows in Midnight Commander or text editors. When NumLock is on - the numbers are typed. But when it off, nothing happens - cursor doesn't move. The same reaction from Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys on numpad.

I was about trying with showkeys -s and the using it as input for setkeycodes, but I get more than one hex number, and I guess setkeycodes doesnt like that. An "" does not help..

Feb 1, 2011Is this a beta version or something? I installed this version because it came as a live cd coupled with emc2 for cnc machining. I cannot get anything to work correctly. I tried to install Mozilla thunderbird using the application manager and it is very slow. It takes forever for the menus to open. or emails and is virtually unusable. I tried to use the startup manager and it killed my grub bootloader so I needed to reinstall. I couldnt successfully use the grub2 console prompt to log back into linux even though I ollwed several tutorials for this. I tried to install the flash player plugin and it kept telling me still to install it before I could watch flash videos even though I had installed it 3 or 4 times. I just tried to install evolution mail and it cannot log into my gmail account. I tried to install swift dove which is a faster version of thunderbird and it says it is starting but then never does. I am reasonably sure I should hang in there as I have heard Ubuntu is very good as an os.

It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?
