Ubuntu Multimedia :: Doesn't Accept DVD-RWs?

Aug 12, 2010

there's one major issue left preventing Ubuntu from running flawlessly on my hine.Ubuntu doesn't recognize DVD-RWs once written on. The problem occurred with my old drive (LG GSA-H55N) as well with my new drive (Samsung SH-S222L).I'm using Sony DVD-RW (1x-2x speed)
Ubuntu only recognizes blank DVD-RWsonce written on - no matter whether written by Brasero or Windows 7 - Ubuntu isn't showing any drive in Nautilus nor in Brasero after putting in the DVDtherefore I can't even erase themboth of the drives as well as the DVD-RWs are working perfectly fine on Windows 7 (erasing, writing)I managed to get all other things working by now. My system is close to perfection and this is the only remaining major issue.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Phonon Doesn't Accept Standard Capture Device

Mar 22, 2011

I have two sound devices, an internal audio device on my motherboard and an external USB devices, which came with my headset. After upgrading to 11.4, the microphone on my headset ceased to work with my softphone. As it turned out, the softphone used the standard input device, which was defined in the Phonon tab in the KDE System Settings. Unfortunately, when I put the USB Device on top of the default input stack, it doesn't stay there. When I apply the changes and leave the Phonon tab or even enable "Show advanced devices " the stack always resets to its initial order. I was unable to find any kind of config file where Phonon saves this settings.

General :: Less Doesn't Accept Commands Unless Press Enter?

I am not a new user of linux but the last time I used linux was five years ago.

I am having a hard time using less. It dont want to accept commands immediately. I need to press 'Enter' to accept the command.

Like if I press 'q' to quit, it will echo 'q' and dont do anything. I have to press 'Enter' to make it quit. Same with other commands.

I am using Windows PuTTy 0.60 with ssh to connect to linux machine.

The linux system is: Linux <removed> 2.6.18-53.el5 #1 SMP Wed Oct 10 16:34:19 EDT 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The less version is :

I dont have any problem with vim and more. Only with less.

I have also tried changing the TERM from xterm to vt100. But still the same problem with less.

Programming :: Sed Doesn't Accept Variables To Replace In File

Mar 17, 2011

[code]...

The variables are clean and available in my script. No prob. $old is an IP-address of a server, $new as well. replacement-file is an xml-file (the ip-address to be changed is within an xml-tag). It should be trivial, but it isn't. I spent the last 3 hours reading about the problem, trying several different 'solutions' or workarounds. It should work, the '"' should take care that the variables get expanded, but whatever I try the old server IP isn't replaced.

Programming :: Socket Server Using Pthread Doesn't Wait For Accept() Properly?

Apr 19, 2010

I'm building a simple(?) socket server using threads to serve up a few requests. The spec is such that I have to listen to three ports at once, so I decided to use pthread to create three separate threads that would wait for connections, then spawn new threads to handle them.

The problem is that when I do this, for some reason the program never enters the wait loop and instead terminates (All three threads did get created since the messages get printed properly.) It gets to the line which prints "???", but not the line after the accept() call.I don't see an open port when I check for one either so I'm 99% sure they're terminating.Basically I have a main() method which has three calls to pthread_create, which should result in three threads being run that all wait for connections (listenOnPort). After each thread creation I print some info to make sure it's actually being created.

By the way, when I just run listenOnPortwithout threading, the server appears to enter the loop correctly and seems to be waiting for requests. It's only when I run the functions as threads that the problem seems to happen. The source is attached below. Any help will be appreciated. Much of the code is borrowed from a website (I can't post it because I am new here.) You need not worry about the handler_ methods because those are just methods that are run by the threads themselves.

Also--the original source was in C and I changed it to C++. Should I just use C?

Or is there another way to log in to the sudo group to make these changes? How do I set sudo passwords?

Ubuntu :: Kernel Upgrades - Should Accept Them All

Jan 28, 2011

I am using Meerkat w/ the 2.6.35.24 kernel. I am extremely satisfied w/ the direction of Ubuntu and Canonical and am amazed at the focus and dedication of all involved, including the contributors and moderators here.

But I have a question regarding continually upgrading the distribution kernels while awaiting the next iteration (11.04). Is it advisable to upgrade every kernel when my system seems to run well without them? For instance, each kernel upgrade necessitates that I reinstall the NVIDIA driver, among a couple other minor problems. This is not that big a deal, but I would like to avoid it--it's just an irritation when I reboot to a black screen. But another irritation is continually ignoring the update notices.

Ubuntu :: Su And Gksu Don't Accept Password?

Sep 1, 2011

I have this issue on both Ubuntu and Lubuntu 11.04 64-bit on 2 different machines. I have not tested 32-bit.

When I run synaptic or update-manager it presents me with gksu, not gksudo as it previously did in previous Ubuntu releases, no matter how many times I try it will not accept my password.

I have even given it command line arguments to print the password to the terminal and it's correct.

I have found a workaround - by running gksu-properties and changing the mode from su to sudo it will now display gksudo and accept my password.

However, I want to know why it won't accept my sudo password for the su and gksu commands? There are no error messages which are outputted, the gui just says incorrect password.

Ubuntu :: Ekiga Does Not Accept Incoming Calls?

May 14, 2010

After I installed Lucid on my Netbook, I have different problems with ekiga.

First of all, some information about my ekiga account:

In ekiga I created a SIP-Account with a usual landline phone-number, my voip-provider is 1&1 (in Germany). In ekiga the account is named "Standard%limit", because I cannot register my sip-account without the "%limit". If I leave the "%limit" out, I get the message "Could not register (Forbidden)", but here on ubuntuforums (or maybe on launchpad) I read about the "%limit" as a workaround. Maybe it has something to do with my problem, I don't know.

Now, this is my problem:

Ekiga does not accept incoming phone calls after a few minutes after launching ekiga. Well, let me describe it this way: Usually ekiga plays a ringtone and shows a message whenever there is an incoming call. However, ekiga only behaves as described and expected just after launching ekiga. A few minutes later, lets say five or ten minutes, ekiga does not accept incoming calls anymore. I tested it with my mobile phone - when I call myself on the landline with my mobile phone, I expect ekiga to play the ringtone and show a message that there is an incoming call. However, ekiga does not do anything and after a few seconds the call is terminated automatically. But it is not the same as if ekiga is not running because if ekiga is not running I get the message that the subscriber is not available.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lynx Won't Accept Passwords?

Jun 12, 2010

this is just weird. Did a fresh install from the alternate CD, including deleting original Win XP partition. Installation went just fine. Building this for my wife, so when asked for user name and password, entered those for her. As required, enteressword, then re-entered for verification. When setup completed, I tried to login, but absolutely could not. System recognizes the keyboard, responds to enter key, enters dots in the PW box as I'm typing but only returns Authentication Failed.

Thinking I must have mistyped the PW both times, I reinstalled. This time, I created my user name and password; the one my hand muscles know so I don't even have to think about it. Get to the end, reboot and, I can't log in!Does anybody have any idea what's going on here? I'd truly love to find out; my wife is getting restless

Ubuntu :: Getting Openssh Server To Accept Connections In 10.04?

Jul 13, 2010

I'm having problems getting openssh server to accept connections in Ubuntu 10.04.Here's what I've done (twice): Installed Ubuntu 10.04 on USB drive with pendrive installer. This creates a default user "ubuntu" and you don't get the chance to choose a password for it. Started a keyring for network access and selected password. Works.Enabled VNC and selected password. Works fine with VNC client on local network. Logs in as "ubuntu" user and asks for the VNC password, then connects. Note: the client doesn't know the "ubuntu" user password, and neither do I! However, it works.Installed openssh client and server from Ubuntu s/w center.

$ ssh localhost OR $ ssh ubuntu@localhost try to connect, but asks for password, which I don't know (see step one, above) so, then I created a new user, with known password, logged in as new user in Ubuntu, works.however, $ ssh newuser@localhost still fails, even when correct password for <newuser> is supplied. Rejects the password three times, then gets the usual error about keys.I also tried connecting with an SSH terminal app from my iPad, again using <newuser>. It gets essentially the same error, "failure to authenticate".

All this is still on my own LAN, haven't gotten to going outside the router yet. What I want to do in the end is use VNC over SSH from a client on my iPad to talk securely to Ubuntu while I'm traveling.

Server :: Install Of Phpmyadmin On Ubuntu 11.04 Won't Accept Log In

Jun 11, 2011

I seem to have a working install of Ubuntu Server 11.04 (Samba running without issue on same machine). The lamp stack seems to be running fine as well. (Apache index.html page works, phpinfo() works, mysql works from the mysql command line.) I have installed phpmyadmin. After install I had to reboot the server (restarting Apache still said error in PHP and couldn't start). After reboot, the welcome screen comes up, but using root with password doesn't work. Using an admin user that I created with privileges in *.* doesn't work either. There are no errors on the screen, it just simply loops back to the beginning screen.

There is an error in apache2 error.log saying that it can't find the page [URL] which seems strange because you can bring up the welcome page, you just can't log into phpmyadmin with any of the created users that I made from the mysql commandline. I don't see any php errors in syslog (which is where the php errors are being directed) except a notice that CRON is running for some purpose for PHP.
