Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Card Disabled - Not Working Anymore
Aug 5, 2010Earlier I was in windows to do school that I had to do in windows. I shut my monitor to suspend my computer, which disables my sound card. Later on I went back into ubuntu and forgot about it. Ubuntu had updates to the system and since then I have not been able to get my sound to work.

Mar 19, 2011After the last updates (in which there was also the 2.6.35.28 kernel) my audio isn't working anymore. When i open an audio file, it goes foreward with steps like 5 secondos and i can't listen nothing. Videos i can see, but with no audio, and ..... videos go at like 2x speed (and also here no audio). I tried booting with the 2.6.35.27 kernel, but doesn't change anything.

May 9, 2010Upon upgrading to Lucid from Karmic, my dual head setup doesn't work anymore with the new 2.6.32 kernel. In the previous kernel 2.6.31, everything works as expected (also when I boot Lucid with that kernel). On 2.6.32, the only thing I get is two clones. Is there some new type of configuration required that I missed or should I still compile some new kernel module???

Debian Multimedia :: System Beep Doesnt Work Anymore?
Nov 21, 2010I have a problem which is a great inconvenience to me. I want to say that I've been searching for the answer for a week and couldn't find anything but problems similar to mine which were unresolved.I used to have debian lenny, but one day i decided to reinstall my operating system and upgraded to sid, so I have a fresh install of debian sid with gnome.
The system beep no longer works on gnome.
What I mean, when i move to terminal(like ctrl+alt+f1) it works great, it also works when i type 'beep' in gnome-terminal. but it doesnt make a sound when i e.g. press ctrl+G, when i am being called on irssi, when i press backspace in gnome-terminal. These things used to work in Lenny, and I really need them (especially this hiliting in irssi). I would go back to Lenny if i didnt need some software that is not present for that version of debian. The pcspkr module is loaded

Dec 12, 2010I have a Dell optiplex GX260, 2.4ghz speed, 512 ram,40gb hard disk. I have installed two operating systems XP and ubuntu 9.10. My problem is getting the new Tv card to work with ubuntu. With xp it works with no problem. I tried to download prgrams like tvtime and xawtv but all amounted to nothing. tvtime fails even to launch while xawtv launches and hangs the computer and nothing responds. Oct 30, 2010I upgraded fro Jaunty to Karmic and then to Lucid and my TV card has stopped working. I had been informed that this was a result of the splitting of the linux-firmware into two separate packages, but having installed the linux-firmware-nonfree package the problem persists. The card is a Hauppauge WinTV PCI and although it is properly recognised by commands like lsmod, lspci and in the sound card settings, I can't tune in a single channel. It worked out of the box in Jaunty. Is there anything else that needs to be done to get the nonfree firmware working properly?

I was able to copy 227 images to a brand new 2GB memory card and I am only using 8% of the card and now I can't write to it anymore?

This isn't the first time this has happened either. Just the last couple times I didn't really care enough to pursue it. But now I am trying to load a card for my daughters digital photo frame and I can't because now all of a sudden I can no longer write to the drive? The exact error message I get is: "Could not write to /media/disk/image.jpg" and when I try to create a new folder, I get a disk full error message? How in the heck is this possible when I am only using 136MB of 2GB of capacity?
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Get Nvidia Card To Work On Dell With Integrated Graphics?
May 25, 2010I have a PCI graphics card, Nvidia Geforce FX 5500, but can't get it to work. I have 10.04 installed on a Dell Dimension 3000, P4, 1Gb RAM, integrated graphics. I installed 10.04 without the card in the machine, then shut down and plugged the card in and booted it up again (BIOS setting is 'onboard' for integrated graphics, 8Mb; only other option is 'auto'). Checking the hardware drivers I can see the recommended Nvidia drivers (v173, not yet activated) and lspci gives me the integrated as well as the Nvidia listing:

So far so good, but that's where it ends. Changing the BIOS setting to 'auto' turns the screen off on reboot, both for the monitor connected to the VGA port of the Nvidia card and for the monitor connected to the VGA port of the motherboard. I have to shutdown, take the card out and set the BIOS back to 'onboard' to be able to boot again (and shutdown, plug the card back in and boot up again to get back to where I was).
Activating the recommended hardware driver and rebooting (still with BIOS set to onboard) gives a blank screen (screen is still on and there may have been a flash of the purple screen with the ubuntu logo); nothing else happens no matter how long I wait. Rebooting doesn't help, it turns off the screen; same result for booting in recovery mode. I can get to the GRUB bootloader and when I replace 'quiet splash' with 'nomodeset' I manage to boot again with the monitor connected to the VGA port of the motherboard, but am not anywhere closer to getting my monitor working on the Nvidea card.

May 26, 2011i had an nvidia geforce 6800 card in my pc and that just all of a sudden stopped working (the screen went blank) so i went to my onboard video and it works but no matter what video card i install, it doesn't work (still a black screen) and i know the cards work on other pc's but just not this one. i've tried different ati cards and nvidia cards with no luck. i've also wanted to disable my onboard card all together but my bios doesn't have that option for some reason. i also thought that it might be the slot but when i install the video card in the pc, the fan works so it's not that.

Sep 4, 2010I'd be grateful for any suggestions to get a second TV/Monitor to work in addition to the desktop monitor for a PC which runs Lenny. The first monitor is a small TFTLCD 15". Works perfectly with a GEForce FX 5200 nvidia graphic card and uses the 173.14.09 driver. Having obtained an SVGA cable, I connected the card to a rather larger 32" LCD Panasonic TX-L32S10B TV to enable some armchair viewing of internet etc for my parents. The Panasonic TV or monitor shows all the boot messages but the graphical server fails to start. I know that both screens work, either alternatively or simultaneously, having tested with a Puppy live CD.
However, running
nvidia-xconfig --twinview results in an incorrect screen resolution for the 15" TFT Monitor; Gnome Screen Resolution Preferences gives a rather surprising fixed setting of 2048x786/50Hz when the maximum should be 1024x768. The resulting xorg.conf file is:

Apr 26, 2010I'm using Karmic since November and standby/sleep has always worked fine. Some weeks ago, it stopped working fine.
After a reboot, I can put the system in standby only once. If I try standby after that, the system seems to do a normal standby, but it resumes at the moment the fans would normally stop working.
I tried different things like the s2ram program, pmi action sleep, etc. I went to the BIOS and tried a number of things, one was succesfull: disable USB. When USB is disabled I can go into standby every time. When I enable USB again (even with no devices connected), standby only works once again.
So, how can I disable USB at the moment I go into standby?

Jun 22, 2010If i use my Ubuntu some times per week, there isn't any problem. But if i don't use it for a short time (a week), when i want use it again and select it on GRUB.. after the first loading screen (on Ubuntu 10.04 the purple screen with Ubuntu in white and some points under), my screen is black. The computer screen is receiving signal because the led is green and not brown/orange like when is on standby mode. On Windows i haven't any problem.
First time it happened with Ubuntu 9.10. I didn't got solution for it and i format the partition and install the 10.04. But now it happen again with 10.04. I have an ATI 5770 and i have tried drivers since 9.12 till 10.4 (last ones the best i have had) On versions before 9.10 i had no problem, but i can't confirm that, because i had other graphic card (NVIDIA 9800GT). But the 5770 didn't work well on previous version so i updated to 9.10 and after this problem, updated to 10.04.
At spanish forum, people don't know solution for this problem, they never read about a similar problem. I hope you know a solution for it, because the only one i found and work is.. format and reinstall.
Ubuntu :: Mouse Clicks Don't Work Anymore?
Sep 2, 2010without any warning, mouse clicks stopped having any effect. I can move the cursor without a problem. No apps are frozen and I can type at the command line. But mouse clicks have no effect. The same mouse was working fine before and it works fine in Windows. When I look in /var/log/messages, I see:ondemand governor failed, too long transition latency of HWfallback to performance governor [OK]I don't know if this is significant or not. The mouse is connected via USB. I'm running Lucid Lynx with all of the latest updates.

Jan 14, 2010Update 6th March 2010: Update to Kernel 2.6.31-20 SOLVED the problem. Recording works again (still wouldn't in kernels 2.6.31-17 to 2.6.31-19). If a kernel update doesn't solve your problem, please read post 14 on page 2 by Mocha which seems to have solved the problem for other users without updating the kernel
Update 8th February 2010 to Kernel 2.6.31-19 did not solve the problem, please also read post number 7 for more details.
Quick Conclusion for other users who might experience the same problem:
After an update to kernel version 2.6.31-17 in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, my external microphone did not work anymore. Playback was possible, just recording would not work anymore, although there was quite some background noise in the headphones. This made it impossible for me to use Skype and/or Sound Recorder.
All the possible solutions offered below did not help in my case (although you might give them a try).
I switched back to kernel version 2.6.31-16 where the problem does not occur.

I know there are lots of threads about this topic, but I have spent hours on this problem already and none of the solutions offered so far worked for me so I decided to start this thread.
I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 and so far, my external microphone worked flawlessly in Skype as well as in Sound Recorder. A few days ago, I received a call on Skype and all the guy on the other side could hear was loud noise. I can only play sound, but not record anymore (i.e. the microphone doesn't work anymore). I tried two different microphones just to be sure whether one was defective and also checked it in Windows (where they both work).
I am not sure what might have caused this problem, I just remember a kernel upgrade about that time (not sure whether this is the reason though). I use 2.6.31-17-generic now.
Here is what I have tried so far:
1) Right-click on the Sound Icon in the top right corner and checked the following: in the hardware tab, it is set to analog stereo duplex, input is set to internal audio analog stereo (no other choice here) and the mic is NOT muted (playing with the volume doesn't help either) and output is set to internal audio analog stereo (again, no other choice) and connector is set to analog output (here I can switch to analog headphones or analog speaker, but makes no difference).
I remember that I could choose between Microphone 1 and Microphone 2 in the input tab; this is somehow magically gone.
2) Installed padevchooser, tried several settings to no avail
3) When I use "alsamixer" (version 1.0.20) in a terminal, Playback>Master is set to 100<>100, Capture is set to 150<>150, lowering and/or playing with these figures doesn't help either.
When I use "alsamixer -Dhw:0" in a terminal, I get the same results as in step four.
4) In Gnome Alsa Mixer, only "Beep" is muted, everything else is set to max. I have Master, Headphon, PCM, Front, Front Mi (x2), Lin, Mic, Mic Boost, Capture (x2, set to record), Beep, Speaker
I have tried to mute/unmute different setting to no avail. Now I wonder why I have two Front Mi and two Capture entries. This is different than it used to be, might this be causing the problem?
5) Fiddling with Pulse Audio Volume Control didn't help either.
6) Had a look at "paman" (pulse audio manager), not sure whether I should change anything here.
7) Installed "linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic" and rebooted as recommended in several threads, did not help either.
Added the parameters "model=auto" and "probe_mask=1" to '/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf', did not work, so I deleted the entries again (hint from [url], see post 5)
Now I am at my wits end. I need my microphone to work, especially for Skype, otherwise I have to switch to Windows every time I receive or want to make a call which is definitely not a long-term solution?
Does anybody have an idea what might be causing this problem? As I said, it used to work flawlessly just a few days ago and now I don't even know what I should do next to make it work again...

Jan 24, 2010I use Kubuntu 9.10 on my desktop and UNR 9.10 on my netbook... both worked just fine before(with every version of Ubuntu since 8.04), but I didn't use them for a little while with 9.10 and nothing from either of them... Logitech USB headset and the IPV Free2 USB phone.... granted I couldn't use all the features with the Free2 phone before but I could still use it to talk with skype. When I go to sound devices in skype, they are both recognized by the system... but just will not work no matter what.

But since than, I'd a black screen (harddisk didn't anything, and Grub too...) And now, after using a couple of these commands via the Ubuntu Lucid Lynx Live CD I get a mini bash in Grub, but no entry's to one of the two systems! What's wrong, and what do I have to do?
