Ubuntu Multimedia :: NVIDIA XServer Settings - Black Screen Of Death

Dec 11, 2010

I had Ubuntu 10.04 running fine. Then I got curious about NVIDIA XServer.

"ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)]" - Video Card

I opened it up, clicked a settings change, and said OK.
It said you need to update your blah blah blah.
Then it said blah blah blah doesn't exist.
Then it said it would create it for me.
Then I said REBOOT!

Now I get a black screen of death.

The only way I can get anything to happen on my monitor that comes from this computer is to boot into the Install Disk and say "TRY UBUNTU".

Ubuntu :: Spontaneous Logout In Natty - Screen Goes Blank

Apr 30, 2011

However, there are one or two stability issues. In particular, over the last couple of days, I have seen two occasions where my screen suddenly goes blank, and after about 3 seconds I am presented with the login manager. I can then log in, and the desktop works fine again. Of course, everything I was doing is gone... So, where do I look to find what is causing the problem? I'd like to find out and either fix this here or submit a useful bug.

Debian :: Spontaneous Reboot - Log Files Overwhelming?

Jun 25, 2011

A short while ago and for no apparent reason, my system rebooted. I was doing a lot of things at one time scanning, Photoshop in Wine, Open Office, ftping etc. I can't remember ever having this happen. When I logged in again, the window manager wasn't working quite right. That made me think Compiz might be the culprit. Logging out and in again set things right.

I started looking in log files to see what happened but was quickly overwhelmed. Are there any likely key words I could search for to track down the cause? And in which files?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Spontaneous (?) Loss Of Screen Res Options?

Jan 2, 2010

My Fedora 10 will no longer give screen res above 800x600 (60hz)I routinely change screen res (due to having two different monitors) but I made no hardware changes immediately before the problem began. In other words: the hardware was the same as it had been the day before the problem arose.I assumed a hardware fault, so I tried with XP. Weird: I can set higher resolutions there without problem.Any idea why this happened and how I can fix itBTW, I've been a Linux user for some years, but I would describe my skill level as: 'novice.'

CentOS 5 Networking :: Spontaneous Static IP To DHCP Switch?

Jan 7, 2011

I had something I think if very odd happen to one of my computers at work today, it appears to have spontaneously switched from having a static address set to getting its address by dhcp.this is a small office with a mix of mostly linux servers and desktops with a few stand alone windows computers, mostly notebooks. Most of the desktop computers get their address by dhcp, they all have NIS /NFS for remote mounted home directories (interchangeable desktops so anyone can log in at any desk). The particular desktop computer in question here has a shared printer on its parallel port, so has a static IP. Yesterday a UPS in the server rack died, after pulling it and plugging things back in and restarting the servers, it was easiest just to reboot all the desktops, everything came up ok including the desktop in question, and the printer did work.

Today I pulled the oversized UPS from this desktop to replace the dead one, and put a more appropriately sized one in its place, shut the servers down again, rebooted, etc,About an hour later someone tells me the printer is not working on the desktop, and after a lot of searching I find this desktop has the wrong IP address, I ran system-config-network and it showed the address was set to dhcp, I changed this back to the correct static IP and things seem to be working ok now.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Spontaneous Reboot - KDE4 Desktop Comes Up With The Keyboard And Mouse Not Working

Jan 16, 2010

I have a new system with Asus M3A78-EM mobo, 4 GB RAM, AMD Phenom II quad-core 955 3.2 GHz CPU, on which I've installed the 64-bit version of openSUSE 11.2. It's a lightweight server as well as a desktop machine, and is on 24/7 (and on a UPS). The problem is that the system reboots itself spontaneously, on average a couple of times a day, at seemingly random times. After one of these reboots, an examination of the system log shows nothing at all suspicious logged in the minutes prior to the sudden reboot. Sometimes the system recovers after the reboot, but about half the time the KDE4 desktop comes up with the keyboard and mouse not working. The system log in that case shows that the USB subsystem is wedged, with the message "task khubd:38 blocked for more than 120 seconds", followed by a series of call traces. At that point, I can usually log in via SSH from another local machine and execute a shutdown/reboot, and the system usually recovers fully after that... until the next spontaneous reboot. The only thing unusual about my USB setup is that I have a Hauppauge HVR-1950 TV tuner plugged in, and the pvrusb2 driver installed on the system.

The mobo has an onboard ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphic controller, and I installed the proprietory ATI driver for it in the hopes of improving system stability. It didn't.

Due to the lack of syslog warnings before one of these reboot events, I was inclined to think the hardware was at fault, and my first thought was bad memory. However, fairly extensive testing with memtest86+ showed no errors. Of course, it could be other more obscure hardware problems, but it would be nice to be a little more certain before I resort to replacing the motherboard or the whole system.

Other info... booting in failsafe mode doesn't seem to cure the problem. Setting acpi=off in the boot menu doesn't seem to help either. There are some suspicious things in the boot log, though, such as:

My system does not have ECC memory, so it is indeed properly disabled in my BIOS. Again, I see discussions of this bug(?) on the net, but little indication of whether it is anything serious.

At this point, I'm running out of ideas... I'm still not sure whether the hardware or openSUSE 11.2 are at fault, and I don't want to give up on either prematurely.

Ubuntu :: Session Restarts Itself - 'black' Screen Of Death / What's Going On?

May 15, 2010

I'm having a really odd problem since I upgraded to 10.04 on my IBM T40 laptop. Every now and then, especially if I'm using Firefox (so it seems), I will be in the middle of something and suddenly I get a black terminal screen that flashes a few lines ending in "checking battery state" and I get bounced back to the login screen. I log back in and all my work is gone (Firefox and whatever else was open has closed). I was on the web for a while tonight and in a few hours it did it three times. I never had this happen before in 9.10.

Any idea what's going on? If it matters I'm on AC power when this is happening. I haven't used it long enough on battery to know if it does it then or not.

Ubuntu :: Installing / Updating Aptitude - Log In Loop ... Of Death?

Feb 18, 2011

I saw this post [URK] and I'm having the same problem up to the point of installing/updating aptitude. Here is the background: I logged in and just recently added another monitor and used Multiple Monitors from the software downloader to manage them. Last night they worked great and I was using the extended desktop. When I logged in this morning they were cloned and I couldn't get the buttons "clone or extend" to not be grayed out. I couldn't have cared less since I was just logging on to check email and things so I looked around for a second in the settings and was sidetracked by the display/window options. I was scrolling through the different themes and colors and then all of a sudden BAM! back to the login screen. I was using the arrow down key to scroll and like I said, immediate toss to the login screen. I made O.o? that face and tried to login and then I kept getting kicked back the same as the post I linked above. So...

I press ctrl+alt+f2 and log in. I see Welcome to Ubuntu! back to the aptitude step, when I run sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude reinstall gdm I return sudo: aptitude: command not found. So when I do: sudo apt-get install aptitude I return E: unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Via Vt1708s Azalia No Sound When Starting Jack Sound Server?

Jun 7, 2011

After installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.

I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.

I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.

Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?

Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server

if this helps, here is the error message received when jack does not start when the normal duplex option is selected.

21:24:04.867 Patchbay deactivated.
21:24:04.868 Statistics reset.
21:24:04.886 ALSA connection change.
Cannot connect to server socket err = Connection refused

[Code].....

also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Tuner Card Not Feeding Sound Through Onboard Sound?

Aug 9, 2011

I am setting up a mythtv/xmbc box on Ubuntu 10.10 (natty does not install on my hardware). I have a Sabrent TV PCIRC tuner card, which seems to work fine with the proper card and tuner settings. My on-board sound is HDA-Intel surround sound, which I have configured as analog duplex.

Currently the sound works fine through my speakers plugged into any jack on the back of the PC (two speakers, one jack). I can watch ripped movies and listen to music. The TV tuner is pumping sound from its external jack -- if I hook it up directly to the speakers it works fine. I can feed the Tuner's sound to the line-in on my motherboard, but nothing comes out. In the sound manager, i have the input device selected and the input level shows that the sound is coming in through the connector, and I can test the speakers and they work fine, but they don't seem to be communicating that the sound coming in needs to be pumped out through the speakers.
