Ubuntu Multimedia :: Script: Rename & Move TV Show Downloads?
Feb 5, 2011
Just built myself an HTPC from scratch and installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it (using XBMC for now). I'm familiar with Linux and have been dabbling with it for many years but in the end my main computer runs OS X.Trying to modify a script I found elsewhere that will auatomagically rename and move downloaded TV shows into a preexisting file hierarchal system. I have an automator function on my Mac that was put together for PLEX but it will obviously not run in Ubuntu. Here's what I've got so far. Remind you I'm not much of a programmer:
Code:
!/bin/bash
cd /home/htpc/Downloads
[code]....

I've set up rtorrent to move my complete downloads. But i want it to move it to a custom subdirectory according to the file.
For example.
Downloaded. i movie clip and rtorrent moves it to /media/store/eps/ but i want it to automatically move it to check the files name and put it in the right subdir.
If the file is called "Series-1" i want rtorrent to put it the subdir "Series-1" in /media/store/eps/ but if it's called "Series-2" i want rtorrent to move it to the subdir "Series-2"
All this is because my XBMC setup wont add the files to the library if i dont add as a "one-series-only"-folder.

I have a directory which was downloaded and has a silly name like "-=Directory=-" on my headless (no GUI) linux box and when I try to deal with this directory using "mv" in order to rename it or move it somewhere, it simply does not work. Terminal instead says:
Code:
mv: invalid option -- '='
how I can rename or move it?!

I feel like this should have come up before, but is there a convenient way of moving something [directory is what I care about] while leaving a symbolic link in its place? Currently the best way I can find is:
Terminal:
-script of 'mv "$1" "$2"; ln -s "$2" "$1"'
-requires typing out the target name, since it tab completion doesn't work on non-existent things.
GUI:
-move
-rename [copy content first]
-link back
-rename link [paste previous content]
The terminal way defeats the point of using the GUI to easily drag and drop things around, and the GUI is rather clumsy when I have to use copy and paste to even make it work. Being able to manually edit a link target would simplify it, but I don't know of a way to do that.
Note that I'm pretty sure I don't want a terminal solution here, because it's stuff which I don't want to type (and sometimes can't.. seriously, I don't want to try to type a star). Example:
#source:
foo/Some Long thing that has ~random~ characters[a#$%] (%^^) that are annoying!/
#target:
bar/Something Short/

I am hoping someone already has a script or knows of an app that will let me do this fairly easily - I have a fairly large folder structure that goes several levels deep, etc. In many cases there are duplicate file names that are not really different, e.g.,
/home/chris/folder/folder1/doc1.doc
/home/chris/folder/folder2/folder3/doc1.doc
I want to recursively go through /home/chris/folder and move everything to /home/chris/another_location/ without subfolders and renaming duplicates as appropriate, e.g.,
/home/chris/another_location/doc1.doc
/home/chris/another_location/doc1_1.doc

I recently had data recovered and it was sent back to me on what I think is an NTFS drive. I copied all the files over to a file share I have on a Linux box, that's ext4. Now I have that share mounted on my OSX machine, and I can't move or rename most of the files. However, in a couple cases I was able to rename a folder after the third try. Another time I was able to rename a folder once, but not again. All the permissions are showing up the same on the command-line -- I can't see any differences between the permissions on any of the files/folders. Note that I can create new folders and add files no problem, and then rename and move those all I want.

I want to search a directory recursively looking for new .rar/ .zip files. When a new file is found I want to extract the contents to another directory. To top things off would like to rename the source file as something like original.rar.extracted.

So I recently installed Lubuntu on my netbook and I have it all working except for one hitch - when I download something in Chromium (such as a .deb or a .odt file) when I click on the finished download in the bar at the bottom of Chromium it does not open the file in gdebi/abiword as it should. Also when I right click on a file and select "show in folder" it does not work...
Not sure if this is an issue with Chromium or LXDE/PCMan but I figured it couldn't hurt to post here asking about it.

Runing Lucid Lynx,10-4 This is the 3rd time this summer I have tried to view/download a movie and I am required to download 'limewire.exe' or 'FLVPro.exe'. Is there something I can reconfigure that will trick the website into thinking everything is cool and let me watch the movie?

I've tried installing the BBC iplayer desktop, and am currently working my way through the maze of adobe air installer etc.
I wondered if it is possible to view the downloaded programs in a different viewer. I've got both Movie Player and VLC media player installed, but they will both only play for 1/2 second, then the program closes.
Is it possible, or must I persevere with BBC desktop iplayer ?

This is more times I have encountered, with my browsers - Epiphany, Iceweasel,. GNU/Linux Debian SID. Though it is not consistent - on and off. I don't know how to recreate the environment. But though it says, it is downloading but when I go to the folder/directory, it's not there....this is frustrating as sometimes my download takes a while to find out that after it download, nothing is there. litterally nothing.Maybe it's in a temp folder but I don't know where to look for it -- (Epiphany).

my friend just got an Ipod touch, so he gave me his old shuffle. So when I got home, I plugged it in, and it mounted fine. Then I tried to rename it, but when I right click on the icon, the "Rename" option is grayed out. How do I rename it then?

As a long-time Windows user, I have trouble zeroing in on many of the most basic tasks in Ubuntu. I have several dozen photos from my camera that I would like to rename in batches such as tulips01.jpg, tulips02.jpg, etc. In Windows I could highlight them and right-click to "rename" to do the lot. I understand that "renaming" is now changing a "property" but I cannot find the simple way to do an entire lot at a time.

How I could rename multiple jpg files. Say I copied IMG0001.JPG until IMG0134.JPG from my camera, and want to rename IMG0001 until IMG0064.JPG to 'party01.JPG' untill 'party64.JPG', etc. In windows there was a stupid wizard to rename files when you copied them onto your HD from a camera. Is there any good way to do something similar in ubuntu?

I'm trying to figure out how can I fill up multiple files with easytag. It looks like one can do it by selecting all files and using one of the schemes like " %a - %b/%n - %t " but to be absolutely honest I have no clue how it works. I'd like to fill up all selected files' tags with Artist, Title, Album, Year, Track# and Genre. How can one do it ?

Rhythmbox seems unable to handle a directory rename. My problem is the following:
1. Create a playlist in Rhythmbox with some songs in it.
2. Close Rhythmbox.
3. Rename the directory with the songs in it.
4. Open Rhythmbox.
5. The songs are gone from Rhythmbox' index and can be found under "Missing Files". New versions of the songs show up, but this is not very helpful, as the playlist is empty.
I searched the web and found a known bug which occurs if step 2 is left out (that is, a directory rename with Rhythmbox open). However, in my case, even changing a directory name without Rhythmbox running breaks its file index.

I would like to rename a large batch of photos based on their iptc title. i had a quick squiz at exiv2, but it doesn't seem to do it (easily at any rate). is there another tool you all know about?
I suppose a shell script could do it with exiv2 getting the title out from the files, but I am no good at shell scripting.

I'm currently running Meerkat beta AMD64. I've been using Audacious in Ubuntu for years, before that I used XMMS.
In Windoze I used to use Winamp. Winamp has a plugin called gen_yar. Gen_yar would allow you to right-click on the playlist and copy your current playlist files in track order to any folder on your hard drive, or to a USB mounted mp3 player/thumb drive, whatever.
It had several checkboxes in the settings.
1) Rename the files adding the track number as the prefix (01_, 02_, etc).
2) Create a .m3u playlist of the tracks in that new folder using #EXTINF: instead of the full path. That way I can copy that folder to any gadget or another computer and the playlist will still play those files.
Here is the Winamp Plugin: gen_yar (Yar-matey!_Playlist_Copier) [URL] There's a link to the source code at the bottom of that site if that helps.
Here's another: Winamp Plugin Save Playlist In Order [URL]
I have yet to see this feature in any Linux media software. I've tried just about all of them. The only thing close would be drag-n-drop playlist files from Rhythmbox.
Does anybody know of a plugin for Audacious or Rhythmbox that will do this?
Alternatively, is there a Nautilus script that when I right click on a folder full of mp3s, it will create a playlist of files in that folder, and save that playlist file inside the folder (without the full paths as mentioned above)?
I hate having to boot into Virtual Box just to use Winamp to create portable playlists.

I'm trying to install HandBrake on my computer and it always comes back with the following: Error Package /home/Josh/Downloads/HandBrake-0.9.4-Fedora_GUI_x86_64.rpm could not be installed

I'm using openSUSE 11.1 64-bit and as far as I can tell I've installed libstdc and libwebkit. I can't find (FileDigests) and (PayloadlsXz). I've searched around and couldn't find much on this.Don't the above errors mean that I do not have those packages installed, or am I just reading this wrong?

In the Windows world where I came from, Irfanview freeware easily renamed a large folder of JPEG photos by EXIF time & date stamps, appending a unique number if the time and date stamps were the same. Is there an equivalent rename-by-EXIF information batch command in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid? For example, change (based solely on EXIF information): FROM:DSC_0001.JPG TO:20110224_09:34:56am.JPG

Using Nicotine+ I accidentally downloaded about 11000 files from an user who's evidently too busy to properly organize his archive, and got all his stuff stored in only one big folder.
Nicotine obviously crashed, and I'm not able to open it anymore. When I launch the program, it immediately freezes, and I can do nothing but force its quit. I tried to remove and reinstall the program, but the problem persists. So I was wondering if there's a way to remove the downloads from the list outside Nicotine, editing some files.

I have just had a really frustrating week of trying to get ubuntu and windows 7 to place nice together. Finally got both running correctly on the same machine.Problem I am having now is in ubuntu the nvidia drivers it told me to download and install use something called x server.I have played with every option I can find in the settings, and I dont see one to fix my problem.
Put simply I can not move any window from one screen to the other. It acts like two septate desktops. This wouldn't even be so bad if when I opened firefox or chrome on the other monitor it would open on that monitor. But neither does. They both open on monitor one no matter what screen I open them from.Ideally I would like to be able to grab a window and move it to the other monitor and vis versa just like you can in any windows install. Can anyone help me do this please? Or at least tell me how to make a browser stay open on the screen I open it from?

For Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / Gnome 2.30.2.
I have two applets on my Gnome panel -- NetworkManager Applet 0.8, and Klipper (it works better than Glipper) -- that I want to move.
HOWEVER, right-clicking the panel icons does not enable me to move these applets, as follows:
- NetworkManager Applet 0.8 does not include a Move item in its list of options.
- Klipper displays a long list of Klipper options but no Move option.
How I can move these items to new locations on the Gnome panel?
