Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rhythmbox / Amarok Not Recognizing IPod Touch 3g In Lucid
May 24, 2010
when I plug in my iPod touch 3g I do get an icon for it on the desktop. However, when I open Rhythmbox, or Amarok, or Banshee or anything else, there is no icon for the iPod touch.I have tried the 'scan removable media' within Rhythmbox and it asks me to initialize a new iPod. Initializing results in the iPod making an audible bleep as if it were charging but does not result in its icon appearing in Rhythmbox. Also, I have been able to upload snapshots from the iPod onto my computer but what I need is audio syncing with the iPod.

Summary: a long-working config involving a 1st-generation Ipod Touch with v1 firmware, Ubuntu, and Amarok 1.4 stopped working when I upgraded to Lucid.
A few years ago I was given a 1st-generation Ipod Touch, running the original v1 firmware (I never upgraded to the v2 firmware because v2 wasn't jailbroken at the time). I took it to a friend's place to activate and jailbreak it with her Mac laptop (I didn't have a Mac or Windows machine to install Itunes on; have been Linux-only for many years). Once jailbroken, I was happily able to use it with Hardy, Amarok 1.4, and ipod-convenience (which supply ipod-touch-mount/ipod-touch-umount).
This continued through upgrades to Intrepid and Jaunty. I didn't care for Amarok 2 in Jaunty, so I installed Amarok 1.4 from the ppa someone else made available. I continued to use it through Jaunty and Karmic, without any problems.
Last week I upgraded to Lucid. Syncing Amarok 1.4 to the Ipod Touch no longer appears to work; the Ipod fails to recognize any music transferred onto it (standard "No Music - you can buy music at Itunes" error screen), so I presume this is a libgpod/hash error. I have the FirewireGuid properly set in the .../Device/SysInfo file, as I always have.
Every time I use the Amarok Ipod "connect" function (which runs ipod-touch-mount) it tells me no valid Itunes db was found, and asks to initialize the db. I can then transfer music to the Ipod, and successfully disconnect, but it's not recognized on the Ipod after a respring or reboot.
I've tried RhythmBox and gtkpod briefly with no luck either.
Relevant installed packages:
Code:
ii amarok14 2:1.4.10-0ubuntu3~ppa5 Amarok 1.4 series
ii amarok14-common 2:1.4.10-0ubuntu3~ppa5 architecture independent files for Amarok
[Code]....
Edit: a little more info: after I let Amarok initialize the Ipod Touch and transfer a song to it, the iTunes.db that gets created on the Ipod is 0 bytes long. I presume this is the source of the problem, and indicates something is going wrong with libgpod's creation/editing of the db.
what I should do from here? I've tried removing the DB by hand, but it makes no difference - the subsequent operation to initialize the db results in the same 0-byte file.

I downloaded Amarok 2.4 today and am attempting to use it to sync my music to my iPod Touch. .mp3 files transfer perfectly, but for some reason any .m4a file is being reassigned a .mp4 extension and being relegated to the 'Video' app on the iPod. I do realise that an .m4a is just .aac audio in an mp4 wrapper, why Amarok and/or the iPod is deciding to treat them like a video instead? It's doing it both to my own ffmpeg-encouded .m4as as well as unprotected .m4as from the iTunes Store (relics of my time on Windows). Anyone know what might be going on with this? Ubuntu 10.10 NE, Amarok 2.4, iPod Touch 2G (... possibly 3G, but I'm pretty sure it's a 2G) running firmware 4.2.1

I haven't hooked my ipod up to a computer since I started using ubuntu in June of 2008, and my playlists are getting a bit dusty. I have a 5th generation ipod. Will I have better luck with amarok or rhythmbox, or does it not matter?

I recently found that I can sync my music to my iPod without iTunes/Windows. I tried using Rhythmbox and it seemed to work. That was, until I tried playing the album I added. It just skips through the album.

A while ago, my iPod Touch was on the 3.1.3 firmware and when I would drag songs onto it from within Rhythmbox it worked perfectly. The filenames would be changed to follow Apple's weird naming conventions, and they would appear in the music library on my iPod. Then, I updated to 4.2.1 and I could no longer mount the iPod (this was a known issue, and someone made a fix, but I didn't bother with it) so I wasn't able to connect to it and transfer any more songs through Rhythmbox. Recently I noticed that I can now mount the iPod again and browse it in Rhythmbox (it must've been fixed in an update). However, I can't (successfully) transfer songs to it.
When I drag songs onto the iPod, Rhythmbox displays the "transferring __ songs" status, and they get added to the iPod's list of songs shown in Rhythmbox. However, they aren't visible in the iPod's actual music library. And when I reconnect the iPod to browse the music on my iPod in Rhythmbox, the newly transferred songs are no longer there. But the space left on my iPod has definitely decreased. So I went into my iPod's iTunes_Control/Music folder and noticed that all the songs I transferred are actually there in the F## folders, but they didn't get renamed to follow Apple's naming scheme (so instead of being named something like LNXQ.mp3 they just retain whatever the old filename was). So does anyone know what's going on? Rhythmbox definitely used to be able to transfer the songs in the "correct" way which ends with their filenames being changed and the songs being added to the iPod's music library. Why isn't this happening correctly anymore? Is there anything I can do to fix this?

When I sync my iPod touch 2G on 4.1 (same issue on 4.0), when I try to play the music on my iPod, it will just skip the song/not play it. I didn't have this issue on Ubuntu 10.04.

Amarok 2.4.3 in fedora kde spin with kde update to 4.6.5 was loading my 120gb ipod classic as a generic usb drive instead of an ipod. This made transferring songs impossible.
To fix it: yum downgrade amarok*
Which downgrades amarok and it's dependencies, and then use --exclude=amarok* option with subsequent yum commands until problem is fixed upstream.

Just got a new iPod Touch, but unfortunately Rhythmbox isn't reading it. The iPod shows up on the desktop, so I know it's reading it, but it shows up as a camera, which I assume is the problem. Is there a way I can force rhythmbox to read it?I'm using ubuntu 10.04, by the way.

After finally being able to mount my iPod Touch (8gb, jailbroken on iOS 4.0) with iFuse, I can only sync using gtkpod. This a horrible music syncing application and deserves to be punched in the forehead. I was wondering how to get Banshee to recognise my iPod. I'm on 11.3.

My iPod touch was working fine in 10.04 and since the upgrade to Maverick, I cannot see the songs in it in Rhythmbox or Banshee. In Rhythmbox it appears empty and crashes Rhythmbox when I try to right click it to see the properties. In Banshee the songs appear as 'other'. Trying to read it in GTKPod yields the following error: iPod Database failed: Error during parsing of file /home/user/.gvfs/user's iPod/iTunes_Control/iTunes.I tried re-installing the gstreamer plugins, and also libimobiledevice to no avail. Also tried re-installing the ipod plugin for Rhythmbox and nothing there either

Its a dell e510 with about a gig of ram. I'm struggling to get my ipod touch working with the gtkpod ipod manager. At this point my ipod shows on my desktop when i connect it via usb. I cannot set up the repository for it in gtkpod because i dont know the location its mounting to. if its mounting at all. so my question is. how can i tell where my ipod is being mounted? I dont have a clue what to look for in the terminal results for "df -a"
But this is what i get:
Code:
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 152357444 65577992 79040140 46% /
proc 0 0 0 - /proc
none 0 0 0 - /sys
[Code]...
Edit : Itouch = first generation 8gb Edit 2: I would like to create a sticky thread that helps new users answer questions about ipods. Will a moderator please let me know what i should include in their opinion? ex. using wine to run itunes, gtkpod and how to set it up, using mm players like banshee and songbird... what version of ubuntu works best with the ipods.

completed the first of my five pending Lucid upgrades a few hours ago, the upgrade progress went real smooth. SoI have been checking various apps to make sure they are working ok after the upgrade, and noticed that Amarok will not show its notification (tray) icon in the usual place after the upgrade. This is a pain because normally one would launch Amarok, select a playlist/album whatever, than close the window and skip tracks whatever using the tray icon. Did a bit of googling and found a bug in launchpad it's because Amarok draws a custom icon instead of passing a bitmap, or something, but cannot locate the bug again now. I then tested Rhythmbox and found the same issue.

I know there are a few threads on this already, but I don't think they apply to this type model specifically. This link says that the libgpod is not yet current with the hardware.
It also says that it works with iPod Touch 4G's with a lower OS (ex. 4.0.1). Mine came with 4.1, but even after jailbreaking, I cannot get it to sync music.
If I were to downgrade the OS (is this even advisable for this model), would I then be able to sync music in Ubuntu?

I'm running (K)ubuntu 10.04 side-by-side with Windows 7 (Wubi install) and have been having trouble from the word go trying to get my ipod working with it. I've already managed to jailbreak it with Spirit in Windows in hopes that it would get the iPod libs to work but to no avail. I've downloaded just about every result I could find by searching for "ipod" in Synaptic as well as a few other libraries that I've found while searching the forums for a solution to my problem. I have both Banshee and RhythmBox on my machine and Bash can detect the device but it won't mount and to the best of my knowledge not a single program can see anything other than a folder labeled "iPod" in my "media" drive and even this only recently occurred. For what it's worth, I've downloaded the ipod-convenience package and this is the code that resulted when I tried to mount via Konsole:
[code]...
this is after I've added myself to the 'fuse' group and rebooted the computer.

I just got a 4th generation iPod Touch today. I plug it in to my laptop (Ubuntu 10.04), it recognizes it as a photo storage but it will not recognize it in Rhythmbox or Banshee. Therefore I cannot get any files on to it. Although when I plug it in and open Rhythmbox it makes a little noise.
I have tried installing libimobiledevice, ifuse and tried with gtkpod (basically I've read a lot of stuff about getting it to work) all to no avail. I also plugged it into Windows Vista to get it started as well as transferred a song from iTunes 10 to it, and it still doesn't do much when on my laptop.
It seems to not be mounted in the proper place for gtkpod and no fixes seemed to work. For using ifuse it does not seem to recognize that it is plugged in. I have updated all the libimobiledevice packages and still nothing.

I do not manage to get my my ipod touch 4g recognized by ubuntu 10.04. First time I tried, it was recognized as a camera and not as a media player. I tried to install a few other packages. Now it is not recognized at all....
I followed guidelines on the forum and installed libimobiledevice, ifuse, usbmuxd and libplist. Note I unlock my ipod before connecting it.
Here is what I get with ideviceinfo
jean-francois@Sony:~$ ideviceinfo
usbmuxd_get_device_list: error opening socket!
No device found, is it plugged in?
I see a lot of post related to new ipod touch 4g installation but I think I screwed up somewhere in my configuration since the ipod is not recognized at all.

I'm running Lucid and so far I've been really pleased with how easy it is to access my ipod. My only problem is transferring music I purchased from the itunes store from my ipod touch to my ubuntu box. Neither Rhythmbox nor gtkpod shows that I have purchased music. If I browse through my ipod using Nautilus I can find my purchases but they have numbers for names and their metadata is in plist separate plist files.
The files aren't DRM'ed. If i hover my mouse over any of them in Nautilus, they play fine. Is there an easier way of transferring them than copying them and tagging each file individually?
