I would like to output to my TV, but I have a non-HD TV that only has composite and component inputs, and my laptop only has a VGA output. I'm looking for hardware/software combo recommendations so I can playback my backed-up DVDs in my living room. I'm running Karmic.

First how do I get HDMI audio output to my TV? I think I have just a integrated Intel graphics card. It works fine in windows but I can't seem to get it to work in Ubuntu. I tried searching but couldn't find anything pertaining to this issue.
I am sure that this is very simple but I have installed sound juicer and the gstreamer plug ins. The problem is i still cannot select MP3 as an output output option

View 1 Replies View RelatedI use Ubuntu 10.10 on a Medion PC (E6220), and everything is fine and dandy ... except, the webcam does not work. Well actually I think it does work, and I also think, that Ubuntu would recognize it, if it was turned on. The problem however is, that in order to turn it on, I need to press fn+F9, and that key combo simply does not work ... neither does the fn+F7 combo, which toggles the wifi - but that is less important, since wifi is on and works. Logging into i.e. win7, toggling the webcam there, and then back into Ubuntu is not really an option at the moment. So right now I seem to be stuck in a situation, where a non-defined keyboard shortcut equals no webcam at all. The obvious question of course is: Is there a way to force the webcam on without the key-combo?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried using ssh between my netbook and desktop, but it was going to take around 30 hours to transfer 39GB over the home network. Also SSH is very sketchy and often drops connections.I've been messing with it all day and I'm quite frustrated.What I'm looking to do is use my netbook as more of a primary computer and the desktop as a storage computer. Not quite a server, because I'd like to still keep a GUI on it. I'd like to be able to keep my music and movies on the desktop and stream them to the netbook (SSH sucks for this, always drops connections). I've already set up the web client for Transmission bit torrent client so I can torrent on a machine that's almost always on and connected.
Is there a better setup for all of this? I like the netbook because of the portability; I like the desktop because it's always connected (for torrents) and it has a larger storage capacity. It would be mainly used around the house. I would like to back up a file or two while abroad, but I'm not looking to stream music while I'm across town or anything.
I'm still trying to find out if my coby mp3 player will actually play mtv video files as is advertised.
ffmpeg -formats does list mtv but the only command I really ever used was one to convert a vid to an mp3 so I tried Code: ffmpeg -i test.mp4 -acodec copy output.mtv it returns Code: Unable to find a suitable output format for 'output.mtv' I can't find any mtv files online for purchase or free for that matter, so I know this is all pretty obscure but shouldn't there be a way to convert them since ffmpeg lists mtv format?

I want to set a key binding in bash for "history-search-backward" readline command to a combination of Control+some other key (I'm using 2 as an example), but I'm unable to do so. in fact, I'm unable to alter or add bindings to Control+key combinations.
After several tries my ~/.inputrc now looks like this
But it doesn't work and bind -p | grep "-2" gives nothing. If I try something without the control key:

I snaptic installed xmacro. I do not see it show up anywhere. Lost. I need a macro that can record keystrokes to reset my cable/router modem combo. I now use autohotkey. But I cannot virtual machine this, because it would need to raise up a ms windows explorer, something that cannot be done in a virtual machine on guest OS.

How can I get this device to auto-mount when a cd is in it? Prior to Fedora 12, I had Ubuntu and it would auto-mount successfully.

This is my Keyboard layout (Norwegian layout on a US keyboard on a HP Mini 1000), but I just can't find the combination to hit when I need to pipe (> <) things.

After the update on 7/03/10 edge+mouse button combo's don't work anymore, keyboard short cuts for the same function are still working. Example "Scale", keyboard short-cut ctrl-s working, edge+mouse button Right Edge - Right Mouse Button no action. Worked before...
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 today, and went to watch a movie on my hard drive. I typically do this with an S-Video cord on my TV. In Ubuntu 9.04 I did so simply by plugging in the S-Video cord, then pressing FN+F4 on my keyboard. Worked like a charm.
After the upgrade the same key combination just changes my resolution setting.

I have a brand new pc Running with core i3 and gigabyte H55 S2 motherboard.My problem is the sound output not come with ubuntu 10.04.

I am using a sound card with the C-media CMI8788 chip. This card has both analog and digital outputs, which Linux sees as two different output devices.
The Problem I am having with VLC is that it always changes the output device in its settings to analog. I constantly have to be going into VLC advanced settings and picking Alsa: Digital for the output.
After that the sound outputs fine.
This only happens with VLC. All other programs on my pc output sound perfectly fine. I am using Lucid.
How can I set the default to be the digital output?

then luvcview should capture the video to the .avi file. However, when I try it, no output file is created. Grabbing a raw stream or raw frames works fine, but not the creation of AVI files. Am I missing something?
I work at a television station and we recently purchased a System76 Meerkat ION with the intended purpose of using the HDMI out port for broadcast purposes. We have an existing AJA HA5 box which is capable of converting HDMI to HD-SDI (HD-SDI being the baseband standard in professional broadcasting).
The converter is only willing to accept the following values:
1920 x 1080 @ 29.97
1280 x 720 @ 59.94
I am wondering if it is possible to manually configure Xorg.conf (or whatever file is being edited by NVIDIA X Server Settings) to tell the HDMI output to only produce the latter resolution (1280 x 720).
On an Asrock ION 330HT-BD box Im running Ubuntu 9.10 (2.6.31-17-generic) with the nVidia driver 185.18.36. The Asrock box uses the nVidia ION chip and the nVidia driver appears to be working without any problems.
My problem is, that I what to use the box as a MythTV frontend with an (old) SD Plasma screen as display, which have a native resolution of 852 x 480 and I cant get the box to output a 852 x 480 signal. The Plasma is connected with a HDMI -> DVI cable. No matter what settings I have tried in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, the box keeps outputting a 1024 x 768 (or higher) signal
Questions:
1) Is the nVidia ION chip capable of outputting a 852 x 480 signal?
2) If Yes to above, how do I configure my xorg.conf file?
I installed Kubuntu 9.10 one week earlier and installed VLC player in it. But from that day VLC player is playing the video but not the audio. Also Banshee player is not playing any audio in Kubuntu.

I know that it's not a hardware/cable problem because this exact setup works fine under windows (even though there i'm working with a hacked video driver setup since one doesn't exist for any of the "modern" versions of windows, ati radeon 7500 (mobile))
im running ubutu 9.10 with the standard nvida proprietry drivers as a media center. the output is over hdmi, through a a/v reciver and onto a lcd television. my proble mis that the output is too large for the screen even whan outputting at a smaller resoultion than the native resolution of the television. this means that the top, bottom, left and right of the output is chopped off. in windows i can adjust the size of the output useing some sliders to get the image to fit the screen. however these are only available in the windows drivers and i cannot find a substitute in the ubuntu ones. one way of doing it may be to output black bard at the sides of the screen but i have no idea how to do this.
