Ubuntu Multimedia :: Microphone Capture Stopped Working
Nov 29, 2010
I'm running Xubuntu 10.10 on an ASUS Eee 1215T; the sound hardware on the system is a Realtek ALC259, and there's also sound output through HDMI with an ATI RS690/780 HDMI chip (both according to alsamixer). I was recently fiddling with the sound settings to try to get sound output through the HDMI port. I was successful in that, but I can no longer record sound using the built-in microphone. I'm pretty sure this is something I messed up, since sound recording worked correctly when I first installed Xubuntu, but I'm not sure what I need to do to fix it. I've tried all the promising-looking settings in gnome-volume-control and xfce4-mixer to no avail, and alsamixer also shows everything, both playback and capture, at 100% volume and un-muted; alsamixer also shows that the capture is turned on. I only used these tools (gnome-volume-control, xfce4-mixer, and alsamixer) to get the HDMI output working.

I'm using openSUSE 11.2 KDE on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi 1536 laptop. My problem is that my microphone (I'm attempting to use a 3.5mm headset) doesn't work. Audio playback however does work through the built-in speakers and headphones.
I have gone through the SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE as suggested by oldcpu on the Welcome to multimedia sub-area sticky.
I have tested audio recording with
Code:
arecord -vv -fdat foo.wav resulting in a silent recording. The vumeter showed 0% during the recording.
Here is my url produced by the alsa-info script:[URL]
rpm -qa '*alsa*'
Code:
alsa-plugins-1.0.21-3.3.i586
alsa-1.0.21-3.2.i586
alsa-oss-1.0.17-25.2.i586

I'm running 9.10 and I've being using skype for months with no issues, but today my microphone isn't working. I've tested the physical microphone on another machine and it works fine. I've tried skype, sound recorder and neither gets any input. I also have webcam and the microphone on that isn't working either.

I've got a handy new Lenovo G560 running with OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit. After a normal out-of-the-box installation the laptop speakers failed to mute when I plugged in headphones and I was only able to regulate the sound for both the speakers and the headphones simultaneously. Then I installed a whole lot of ALSA stuff and my sound devices were recognized as "PulseAudio server (local)". Speakers muted when I plugged in headphones - a big yay.
Now, though, my microphone doesn't work any more. It worked before, I'd talked on Skype with it, but upon trying to make a call with Skype today I noticed that it didn't work any more. Sound's turned up in KMix, so everything should be okay - does anybody know how to get my microphone working again?

When I started using Slackware I've been using USB headset. Everything ran perfectly fine. They got recognized, I could use all of it's functions and so on. Unfortunately volume control on them stopped working so I had to service them, and like in every third world country, yay I need to wait minimum three weeks just so they can press a button and say "Yup, they don't work".
I bought normal headset to use them while other one is getting fixed, and didn't expect any problems with them considering they are "old" technology, normal audio input and output.
Now problem is following, sound works fine but microphone doesn't. Once I managed to "fix" it by switching audio input from mic to something else and then back to mic, now even that doesn't work. Another... "problem" is if I leave my USB webcam plugged in while booting computer, there is no sound at all, ether on line ones or USB ones but I can easily solve that problem by unplugging webcam, rebooting and plugging it back in later.
Now everything ran fine until my computer shutdown while I was sleeping. Don't know why, but it started happening recently, don't see anything smart in logs so I assume its... something, read it could be cache, HDD, temperature and so on but since logs don't write down anything smart... will deal with it some other time.
When I talk I can actually hear myself on the headset, which probably means that they work. If I put mic boost all the way up, I can hear myself perfectly clear, but somehow... seems that that information just doesn't get to Slackware, well it gets somewhat considering that it reacts to me adjusting mic boost on KMix, but everything else... no.
Arecord doesn't record anything, TS register as microphone isn't plugged in at all, skype doesn't get any input ether.

I can't seem to get my microphone working. All the levels are maxed, nothing is muted. I've checked pavucontrol, alsamixer, and sytem-preferences-sound, but according to all that, there is nothing muted, and all the levels are maxed. I'm running ubuntu 10.04. My mic works fine in Windows vista, but not in Ubuntu. I am thinking I may need to update my drivers or something. Also I've gone over the forums but haven't found a solution that works, many of them involve changing the levels in system-preferences-sound, but again, that doesn't work. I've posted the results of aplay -l [URL].

I've been trying to get my webcam microphone working in flash on Kubuntu 9.10.I have a Logitek Pro 9000, and video and audio work in other applications (skype), but video is all that works in flash (I have flash 10 installed). In the flash settings, it lists the only microphone option as "Linux Microphone", which does nothing. This seems to be a common problem, with a few solutions offered.
One I've tried, which seems fairly straightforward for gnome users, is here. However, whenever I run pavucontrol, I get an error reading "Connection failed: Connection refused".Does anyone know how to either get pulseaudio open, or how to get the microphone working in flash without it?

I had difficulty getting my internal microphone -
p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; } card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC272 Analog [ALC272 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I was able to get it to work in the Sound Recorder Application and in the System Testing function, but when I do the Skype Test Call, or call someone with Skype, while I can hear the other person perfectly well, my microphone does not appear to work at all, so it is a strictly one way conversation.
I've made sure with the ALSA Mixer that everything is turned on, and all my sound settings are fine, but microphone won't work in Skype.

My laptop is Fujitsu PA 1510. I am unable to record sound with my microphone. I can hear myself talking crystal clear through speakers and the input sliders move on sound preferences. But when I try to record something, my voice is really quiet and there is lots of distortion and buzzing.

Mp3s are playing nicely, so does the test sound with Yast. I copied some outputs which you might need to help me figure out whats wrong with my settings.
The motherboard has an onboard sound chip (which I do not use), and I am actively using the PCI sound card (Aureon 5.1, CM8738).
The microphone is coming with the webcam Logitech E 3500 (which worked under 11.1, but updating to 11.2 keeps me without skype functionality).

I have a HP Pavillion dv4 1313dx that has been running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 wonderfully, but I am getting nothing out of the microphone.
I am a VERY beginning user (All I really know how to do in terminal is copy/paste, cd, ls, and, chown) and if I can fix this easily, I'd love it.
I already know to check the sound preferences, and nothing is picked up on the microphone, but I think it's there.

The microphone of my laptop doesn't work, I'm on a HP Pavilion dv7 and neither the build-in or a microphone plugged in works.
I tried many things (like this: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/78574) to get it work, but none has worked. But I'm quite sure it worked in some earlier ubuntu version.
I'm running kubuntu so it's not a problem in pulseaudio.
Can anyone please help me with this, because I really hate it I have to restart in windows every time for the mic. code...

I've tried to look for a solution for a few days now, and haven't had any results so far. I really hope you can help me so I can get to talk with my girlfriend.I'm running Lubuntu with 10.04 LTS, and alsa version 1.0.23 on Samsung NC10.Hardware works, soundcard is recognized by the OS, modules are loaded, alsamixer volume up and unmuted, sound output is ok, arecord or sound recorder don't get input.
- The microphone hardware works. Having the volumes up I hear the noise from the speakers when tapping the microphone.
- Soundcard is recognized by OS (and like I said, music and all other sound output is perfectly fine)

I have a Logitech ClearChat Stereo headset, and can hear music playing with the headset connected to the PC speakers (external Logitech). Have setup Empathy to be able to talk to someone using Google Talk. It seems to have been setup correctly, as I can see 2 contacts in the offline list. I don't have PulseAudio installed (I think ??), and can see only System | Preferences | Sound , which doesn't show me much. Here are the settings at present (inboard audio card) ..
Code:

I just installed ubuntu 10.10 about 10 days ago, an experience that has been both amazing because its really hard for me to go back to windows already, and frustrating because I'm having a little issue: my internal microphone is not working.here is some relevant info:I had alsa 1.0.23 and decided to upgrade thinking it would solve my problems so I ran the script to install 1.0.24, and for a day or two I lost my sound, without getting back my mic, and just like that the sound came back.I read a lot of posts out there, and ,ade sure I unmuted my mic in alsa soundmixer and pulseaudio.
I ran this:
sudo aplay -l
result:

I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 laptop with Ubuntu 10.04. I am sure that the internal microphone works because when I reboot into Windows it works fine. It does not work in Ubuntu instead. I tried three things:
1) Action: I checked all the volumes, made sure that the microphone is not muted and selected the proper device as "Analog Stereo Duplex".
Result: no improvements.
2) Action: I installed PulseAudio to better manage the volumes.
Result: no improvements.
3) Action: in the Terminal, I executed the line " sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf " and then added the line " options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba " at the bottom of the page that opened. I saved, closed and rebooted.
Result: no improvements.
I executed in the Terminal the command " wget [URL]. The link to where data were uploaded is [URL].

I have a Sony Vaio VPCZ128. It has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M GPU with CUDA Technology (SPEED MODE) and Intel HD Graphics (STAMINA MODE) (switchable). The Processor is an Intel Core i7-620M with 2.66 GHz and the Chipset from Intel HM57 Express chipset.
Finally I successfully installed Ubuntu 10.10 (mainly following the advice on [URL] and using his kernel). Every thing is working fine including sound (still a few minor problems with backlight and Fn F5/F6). But I still desperately try to get the internal microphone running.
