Ubuntu Multimedia :: Make Xine Autoplay DVDs?
Sep 8, 2010
I have just installed 10.04 on my mothers PC. I prefer to use Xine as the DVD player, sound works, playback is smooth, and, most importantly, because menus work, making it easier for her to use. I have tried setting the DVD preference as xine with custom command but instead nautilus opens the dvd as folder. It almost worked in 9.10 (a bunch of error messages pop up sometimes "the source can't be read you don't have rights etc....) and worked perfectly before that. The error messages in 9.10 only pop up when DVD autoplays I've just had a thought that this might be because she is not administrator? (can't get to her PC at moment)

I have just installed SuSE 11.4 and find that xine and VLC cant play DVDs. xine reports:'input plugin cannot open MRL [dvd:/]' and then 'cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:/]'. Plainly I've either forgotten to install something, or somethings' permissions are wrong.

Is there a way to autoplay a DVD when a (valid) VIDEO_TS folder is opened? Mos media players play VIDEO_TS folders but you have to start the player first and then select the folder. I am looking for a way so the media player(vlc) starts automaticly to play when I try to open the video_ts folder. A other option could be a right click option: play movie ith vlc (or something) Is this possible?

I have just installed Slackware 13.1 32bit. My hardware is a P-4 3Ghz with a gig of ram. Intel on board graphic and sound.
This is the best implementation of Kde I have used so far. Slack 13.1 is amazing. The install went very well and everything we configured properly.
My problem is when I start Kde or try to shut dowm or logout I get the same error for knotify: Unable to use the Xine Multimedia Backend:Could not find plugin 'Xine' for application 'Knotify'
I get this same error with the application name at the end of it. If I open amarok I get the same error message with amarok at the end. If I try to click a misic file in dolphin same error message.
When I try to shut down or log out from menu I get the xine error and nothing happens. The only way I can log out is Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to get to the KDM log in screen and then I am able to shut down from the menu.
I have been looking on the forum and using google but have found nothing useful.
The error pops up when I try to play a cd or music on the hard drive.

In Hardy Heron, after installing xine and the usual stuff, and setting xine as the default dvd player in /etc/gnome/defaults.list in the usual way, and also linking /dev/dvd to /dev/dvd2, when I pop in a commercial dvd for autoplay, or select xine from the context menu to play it, it starts to play fine, but also produces the "source can't be read" messagebox, which goes away after being OK-clicked 10 (exactly!!) times.Launching xine directly from the application menu does not produce this problem.

I recently updated all my desktop/laptop and MythTV boxes to 10.10 and now Xine freezes if I hit any key or try to exit. No error message or anything, just freezes. It happens on ALL my machines. I can watch the movie fine as long as I don't hit any keys
sample launch:
xine --no-splash -V Xv dvd://mnt/mserv/DVD/ZATOICHI.iso
Everything worked fine in 10.04. I would love to eventually switch to MPlayer, VLC, or something else but I haven't found one that reliable supports menus, chapters, multiple audio tracks, 5.1 surround output, etc. from an ISO file. Why has no one caught up to Xine?

I am using ubuntu karmic. I log into gnome, but I have kaffeine installed. I find I can't play videos with mp4a mpeg4 audio in kaffeine. The video plays fine, but their is no sound. When I use vlc it plays fine and the codec information reveals mp4a.
I think it might be related to xine as the phonon backend is xine. I try opening the file in xine, and there is also no video. When I try to change the phonon backend to gstreamer, there is no sound for anything. I have libxine1-ffmpeg, libmpeg4ip-0, and libfaad0 installed, though I dunno if they affect this.
I want to use kaffeine rather than vlc because I want to use kaffeine for dvb viewing and recording. In my area, it seems they are broadcasting mp4a instead of mpeg2 or what not.

In Karmic's Amarok 2.2, when you pause and then play, the sound usually stutters a few times before it starts playing smoothly. I originally thought this was a pulseaudio issue, as stuttering problems have been reported with pulse, but that wouldn't explain why sound is fine in mplayer, audacious, vlc, dragon player, and virtualbox. Only amarok has this problem. I found the cause of the problem: phonon-backend-xine. These steps will get rid of the stuttering problem:
1. Install phonon-backend-mplayer. You can get it from Rog131's PPA: [URL]
2. In Multimedia and Sound Configuration, which you can reach through amarok's Playback settings, on the Backend tab, click the arrows to move mplayer up above xine.
3. Quit and restart amarok.
There are some tradeoffs for good sound. Amarok seems to have some bugs when the sound backend is not xine, and bookmarks and OSD are broken when this backend is playing the sound. When you quit Amarok, it can't bookmark your place so it doesn't restart from where you last were, and after the track changes once, the OSD when you hover over the tray icon only says "Amarok - No track playing." You have to open Amarok to find that info. Are there any settings I can access for phonon-backend-xine that could fix the stuttering issue? The problems with the mplayer backend are minor compared with xine's bad sound, but I would like nice sound, OSD, and bookmarking.

I am running openSUSE 11.2 KDE desktop. (Also use LXDE as an alternative desktop because I am running on a P3 with 512 of RAM.) I originally had followed the guidance at Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums and had Amarok and Xine both working satisfactorily for several weeks. Now, for some reason, both apps begin to load and then crash.

I have installed smplayer, and configured it to use the code...
Kaffeine (and dolphin's video preview) seem to use phonon's xine backend, and I can't find out what video output it uses. I'm guessing its plain old xv as it seems accelerated but turnes into a blue square when I move the window.
How do I tell the xine backend to use the same vo as smplayer?
OS 11.2 64 bit, KDE 4.4.4 (Factory)
(ps: I have a 'legacy' ATI graphics chip, xpress 200M working with the opensource radeon driver, which is brilliant btw).

So I have made an interesting Discovery with regards to using KDE4 Kaffeine version 1 and Dolby Digital 5.1. The basic problem seems that there is no way to configure the Phonon xine Backend in KDE 4 for use with Kaffeine version 1. There is however, a xine-config file located at:
Code:
~/.kde4/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config
There appears to be no GUI way to change the default xine configuration (for use with KDE 4 applications) and while you can do so manually, the options seem bewildering, at least to me.
When you run xine-ui or Kaffeine/KDE3 there is an option to adjust the xine audio configuration using a GUI. Any changes made here are ignored by KDE 4 applications. As luck would have it you can copy the old xine configuration (adjusted by Kaffeine/KDE3) over the new one for Kaffeine in KDE4. The old text file configuration is located at:
Code:
~/.xine/config
If you were to use the old Kaffeine/KDE3 to adjust your xine audio configuration and then copy this file to the Kaffeine Version 1 KDE4 location, those changes should be used by the new version 1 Kaffeine in KDE 4. After Kaffeine/KDE3 audio settings work as you desire, open up a terminal session and make the following file copy. You must overwrite or rename the old configuration file for backup.
Code:
cp ~/.xine/config ~/.kde4/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config
Since this new xine configuration is in the new Kaffeine version 1 KDE4 location, it may only modify how the new Kaffeine works and nothing else running in KDE4, but it is still an interesting find.

So im not sure exactly what caused this but when playing movies through the xine-ui has stopped keeping my system active causing my monitor to turn off. This started happening about a week ago and I cant remember installing any xine related updates, but was wondering if anyone knows how to make xine keep the system active to prevent this. I could have sworn there was an option for this but I cant seem to find it anymore.

I have just installed openSuse 11.2 (64bit), and I installed the avi codecs as described in Restricted Formats/11.2 - openSUSE-Community with the 1-click installation for KDE. But kaffeine and xine are crashing when I try to play avi files. One thing I found out is that all packages are 64 bit packages only the w32codec-all version is 20071007-0.pm.1.1-i586 and I don't get offered a _64 package. Is this OK? What else could be the problem

Checked all multimedia rpms and they are all from packman except kaffeine which is KDE4 version.

In Gnome and XFCE I always have a choppy music playback. The music is never played smoothly. There is always hesitations in the playback, as if the CPU is running on 100% and cannot cope with the system load.
One of the reasons for that is (in my case) Pulseaudio.
Another reason is Gstreamer. When I choose Gstreamer as backend in KDE, I get the same choppy musicplayback as in Gnome or XFCE. With Xine as backend in KDE, everything is fine. So my conclusion is: with Xine, the sound would be fine in Gnome too.
So, I wonder if it is possible to use Xine as backend in Gnome too. Does anyone have experience with running Xine in Gnome and/or XFCE? What do I need to do to set Gnome/XFCE, so that it uses Xine instead of Gstreamer?
Or is there maybe a special setting, I have to apply? In gstreamer-properties I have tried all possible settings, but this didnīt change anything to the quality of sound.
My experience is also: this choppy sound is hardware-independend. It doesnīt matter which hardware I use, the sound is choppy. It is also distro-independend. The sound is choppy in openSUSE (gnome and in KDE with applied Gstreamer backend), in Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Fedora with Gnome, Linux Mint with Gnome.

Normally I find everything I need either in the documentation or forum, but it's been months, and this time I'm stumped. I'm posting the results of my latest tests, so I'm really sorry about the length of this post.
I can't play DVDs unless they've been burned by myself or a friend. I had no problems until around the beginning of April. I was running 11.2 on both my laptop and desktop. I think an update changed something. This was before 11.2 was officially retired a week or so later. I wanted to upgrade to 11.4 anyway, so I began with my laptop. During installation I wiped everything from my hard disk by creating new partitions and formatting them. After installation I installed the multimedia packages using one-click (opensuse-guide.org, not opensuse-community.org, although I did read what they said). I know one-click is not ideal, but I was curious. The result was that I still couldn't play DVDs.
I did a fresh installation, just to be on the safe side. This time I installed the packages according to Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide by caf4926. But I still couldn't play DVDs, so I went through the thread Check your multimedia problem in ten steps. Then I ran mmcheck (v2.35). I tried a few times, experimented, and in the end did another fresh install.
In the meantime, on my desktop, which still has 11.2 on it, I found the file which had been changed and changed it back, so I could play DVDs on it again. It was in /etc/udev/rules.d/, 70-persistent-cd.rules. This does not appear to be the problem in 11.4 on my laptop.
I have again installed the packages according to the multimedia installation guide, and done the ten-step check and run mmcheck and these are the results as they stand:
I couldn't find a package called mplayerplug-in. I used zypper to look for it.
I tried installing the totem packages in a previous installation, but they didn't make a difference, so I left them out this time.
I deinstalled my jdk, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference, except that I get an error notification everytime I want to use LibreOffice. And I need it, so I'm putting it back soon.
So, these are my packages:
And this is what happens when I try to play a DVD using Kaffeine (since I don't an error message except from Kaffeine, and I've forgotten where my logs are):
And then comes Read error from: Error reading from DVD over the GUI.
And nothing else happens... I get no feedback from smplayer whatsoever. It opens, trys to read the DVD, and sits there. Even on the console.

I just installed 10.04 and am pleased w/ things, for the most part. However, I cannot get a DVD disc to play (a movie, for instance) or be recognized unless I shut down the system and restart (provided I have already launched a Web video, or something). The DVD-ROM is dead to the world as far as disc recognition goes.
Things were just great in Karmic so this is completely confusing to me.

I have Ubuntu 8.04, and Rythmbox 0.11 I am using for my home music source. I have been building a music library on my hard drive by inserting CD's, then using the "Copy to library" function. This works fine, but when I insert the CD, Rythmbox stops playing from the play list and switches to playing the CD. How do I stop this?
I can (and do) stop the player, manually go back to the play list, restart the player, then I can transfer the music from the CD to the hard drive. I'd just as soon not have it auto play. Or, alternately, is there another jukebox like player with more features that can handle the above? I find the shuffling isn't what I like, it seems to play some songs a lot more then others but I can live with that.
