Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Increase Vram
Jun 5, 2011
I have 6 GB ram, and an nVidia GF 9100 integrated. I'm doing some graphics with a large UV texture map (7200*7200!) and its running out of vram. I've tried editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf :: devices :: VideoRam 2000000 , but no luck. How can I raise the vram from the standard 250 MB to 2GB ?

Ubuntu, in its most recent version (9.10) has stopped to support certain webcams that it previously supported with just plug-and-play simplicity. After many searches on the web, I could somehow managed to make my old webcam (Logitech QuickCam Traveler) work. Skype couldn't see it, but adding the command bash -c 'export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so; skype' to the launcher, worked the miracle.
Whatever, the image was very dark, and in a new web search I found a solution [url] As stated there, I opened the Terminal and entered:
Code:
All is OK, brightness gets up, I can finally see my face (not a great view, but I somehow got away with it) in Skype's test, but I need that change to be PERMANENT, so every time my parents open Skype (it's my parents' computer) they won't have to mess with Terminal (they're 69 and 72 years old, it's their first computer, so I CAN NOT expect them to use Terminal, they just want to open Skype and use it, as they did when they used Windows (until two weeks ago, when I finally convinced them to switch).

Is there anything that can be done to increase video streaming performance? The general impression I got is that it's mainly an adobe problem and not much can be done, though currently streaming is nearly unwatchable. When I switch from full screen to normal size many of the players freeze, ..... HD is unwatchable etc.

I have been arguing with my acer aspire one laptop since I bought it in terms of the screen resolution and have never been able to solve the problem, although I seem to be getting close. I just updated to 10.04 (the netbook remix).I have been following the instructions for how to fix it here. The result was this:
Code:
liz@Pippin:~$ cvt 1366 768
# 1368x768 59.88 Hz (CVT) hsync: 47.79 kHz; pclk: 85.25 MHz

When I watch movies on Ubuntu I noticed that quality of reproduction is not good as in Windows. All movies seems to have some sort of contrast problem which I don't know how to fix. This problem is not present in Windows (XP/7) and stand-alone DVD players play them also correctly.
Here are images (AVI, DivX format)
Windows version: http://i52.tinypic.com/125hlis.png
Linux version: http://i56.tinypic.com/tz53t.png
Also here is MKV format which is noticeably even sharper in Windows:
Windows version: http://i53.tinypic.com/2lmqxqe.png
Linux version: http://i53.tinypic.com/15gfmlt.png
Note: I didn't wanted to include them in post since they are quite big and I didn't want to do JPG compress since they might lose quality. Try not to resize them.
On Ubuntu I installed some 'extra' codecs (might be proprietary) via Software center. I use standard movie player that comes with 10.10, but for MKV I use VLC since mkv don't run in standard movie player. On Windows I use k-lite codec pack and GOM player. My guess is that Windows solve those sharpness and contrast issues by using some playback filters (possibly contained in k-lite codec pack) that are unavailable in Ubuntu. I installed proprietary video driver for ATI RADEON 2600.

I have an EeePC 1005HA with Intel 945G chipset and graphics. I've got a 21" no-name touchscreen attached to the laptop with the intention of hiding the laptop away behind it and simply using the tactile widescreen with virtual keyboard (onboard). By the way, the Touch screen is working great OOTB in Ub 11.04, although will have to tweak some more to get multi-touch working. On it's own the netbook runs 1024x600 (16:9) automatically. As soon as I plug in the larger monitor and mirror the images it auto-defaults both to 800x600 60hz and I have no options to select a higher res. I want to be able to run the large screen in something like 1024x600 or better, as long as its 16:9. At the moment everything is stretched out on the larger screen and on the netbook I have a 800x600 with black margins left & right.
Can't seem to work it out. The Monitor Config doesn't give me any higher options than 800x600 when mirrored. Below is the output of xrandr, if it's any help. Also my xorg.conf file is practically empty.

i have some issues running twinview through my laptop and an additional monitor. i currently have the nvidia settings such that the monitor is the primary screen. however, whenever i click full screen in videos or another application, it maximizes in my laptop screen. also - when i maximize videos videos, the screen fills up, but the actual video size doesn't tend to increase (it doesn't stretch to fit). is this an adobe problem? ubuntu 10.04, nvidia driver v195, dell latitude d630 laptop.

I am using a 15" CRT Samsung monitor and when I upgraded 10.10, the screen resolution became 800x600 and I am not able to increase the resolution of it. This was working fine with 10.04 version.
Below is the o/p for "xrandr":
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
800x600 0.0*
I also see a continuous message box at the top left corner of my monitor with text as "Unknown".

I have just installed OS 11.3 onto a lenovo desktop / Thinkcentre that previously had vista installed on it. With Opensuse I am having trouble getting much sound volume. With Vista the volume was fine but with Opensuse I have PCM, Master running pretty much on full. This gives me a respectable volume but I think there should really be more left in the tank from what I have it at. Is there any way to increase the gain in Alsa? The sound device shows in KDE as HDA Intel (AD198x) using xine backend.

Has anyone else noticed an increase in file size of ripped CD tracks to MP3 between previous releases of Ubuntu and Karmic? Specifically using the same Gstreamer pipeline settings the file size in Karmic is now considerably larger than in previous releases like Jaunty or Intrepid. Is there a fix for this bug. Seems like Sound Juicer/Rhythmbox have some significant bugs in Karmic!

I used to have Windows on my laptop, until I got the blue screen, so I just installed ubuntu. Well everything was ALOT louder on Windows, and I was wondering if there was a way to increase the maximum volume. I have to turn the volume almost all the way up to watch a movie. On Windows 1/4 volume was plenty. I searched, but alot of the answers I saw were that it was hardware limitations, which cant be the case, since it was a ton louder on Windows

I've a laptop from 2001 with 512MB of RAM, and I was running Windows XP, and the laptop wasn't coping very well with the huge demands of the applications of today. It was only yesterday I installed Ubuntu alongside XP and I was surprised to see how fast everything was!
The only thing that's bugging me a bit is the screen. Some parts of the desktop shows some banding where there is meant to be a gradient, probably telling me to increase the color depth. Is there a way in Karmic Koala to change the color depth? I tried using sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf but when the editor shows up with the setting file, it's empty.

I've found this page: [URL]
I've followed several suggestions on my system and overall performance is better.
My question is related to the following:
Quote:
OPTIMIZATIONS NOT RELATED TO STARTUP
Move your temporary files /tmp folder to your RAM if you have loads of memory. This will also provide you greater privacy. Edit /etc/fstab and add the following line to it
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noexec,nosuid 0 0
Is this not normally implemented since some users don't have a lot of RAM?
Also, would it make that much difference if the system didn't have a lot of RAM to work with?

I have 4 primary partitions on my hard drive. One of these partitions has been divided into 3 logical partitions with some free space left over. The order is this: "swap", "/", "/home", and about 80GB of unallocated space. I want to incorporate that unallocated space into the home partition. I tried this by booting a live CD and starting GParted but it didn't give me the option to increase the size of my home partition or the primary partition as a whole. The only thing it would let me do is decrease the size of my home partition.

Default Ubuntu drivers work fine, but wanted to take advantage of what the new drivers had to offer.
Using Ubuntu 10.10.
Installed latest catalyst drivers vers 11.3 My board has a inbuilt ATI Radeon HD 4250
i installed originally via admin -> additional drivers, but my desktop has shrunk about an inch around the edges (splash screen also changed)
I'm using a Panasonic Plasma Screen (XBMC HTPC) vis HDMI.
Catalyst mentions the Panasonic in Display Manager, but also mentions a Projector (1), which is also the Panasonic TV .
Resolution is set ate 1920 x 1080 and refresh 50 Hz.
I then reinstalled the ATI drivers as per [URL] , but no change (and lost screen coming out of XBMC).
I also installed the splash page fix here [URL] so now at least it looks pretty.
fglrxinfo gives me
Code:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 4250
OpenGL version string: 3.3.10600 Compatibility Profile Context
how I can increase the size of my desktop?
