Ubuntu Multimedia :: Converter For MS Mpeg4?
Aug 11, 2010
I am trying to find a way to convert MS Mpeg4 files to a format that is playable on Totem or any of the media players for Ubuntu. I have tried many converters, even trying ones in Windows (I really didn't want to but thought I would give it a shot)
I have installed all the limited FFMPEG and x2.64 restricted and limited libraries. I have all the multiverse and universe repositories. I have tried WINFF, Avidemux, DeVeDe but to no avail and now I am tearing my hair out. Totem cannot find any plugins suitable.

Is 512kb Mpeg4 video different than any other Mpeg4 video? I tried google, but couldn't find any discussion on 512kb Mpeg4 as a format.

somebody gave me a dvd of my little music group, and i used a ubuntu application to edit out two clips (i think i used avidimux--it was about a year ago). it produced a clip in avi format, which is not accepted by anything. i'd like to upload it to my facebook or even videos, but need to convert it. i've tried about everything, but have had no success. i just downloaded winff and tried that. the conversion window produce a lot of information ending with "unknown encoder 'libx264'," whatever that means.
does anyone know how i would convert a clip from avi to mpeg4? it's driving me nuts.

I've been looking for a good, easy to install, video editor. All searches thus far have lead into blind install alleys. All I want to do at this point is edit, cut, and paste AVI and MPEG4 files.

What are some good VGA to HDMI converters that work well with linux? Any suggestions? I don't know the resolution I'm working with just yet, but it appears to be a 42" hd lcd tv/monitor. I think there's a VGA port on the back, but I'd rather route the signal through HDMI for better resolution.

I was looking for a converter to use on common avi files and maybe some others and came across this thread. I followed it all the way to where it asks me to install ConvertIt by adding the repos and then running Synaptic. I found convertit and marked for install and clicked apply and got this error:
Code:
convertit:
Depends: gambas2-runtime (<2.1) but 2.13.1-1ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: gambas2-gb-qt (<2.1) but 2.13.1-1ubuntu1 is to be installed
So i check synaptic for that and i had them installed already from the guide. So i marked them all for reinstall since i installed them in the terminal the first time. Reinstalled and i still get the same error.
Any idea whats wrong? Or is there a better movie converter thats easier? I just want to re encode the files so the will play on my 360.

So I still have a windows partition for two reasons: 1) Steam I know you can run this on wine and I have tried that, but I can;t run valve games at max everything (including AA and Filtering) and I like my good graphics so there is not much I can do about that. The other reason is AVS Video Converter, I've fallen in love with it, it converts anything to anything quickly and flawlessly, but I want an alternative to it for Ubuntu, something that works flawlessly just like AVS, to refine my needs more, I use it to convert video for my PSP.

You may all know about Total Video Converter, Any Video Converter and such used in Windows, where you chose codecs, like i want to convert to mp4 for my phone.
But.. there's one specific thing I'm looking for that most don't seem to have. Cutting.
I need for example, to cut from 24:00 to 30:00, that is the only part i want cut and converted to mp4 ready for my phone.

I have a 'Gadget Geek VHS to DVD maker' USB device that takes analogue video in (composite) and plugs into the computer via USB.
Here is the output of lsuss (it's the eMPIA one):
Code:
Now this is essentially as far as I get, DBUS just says the following when I plug it in:
Code:
What I want to be able to do is open the (theoretical) output stream it produces in vlc and record it from there. Then I run into my next issue. There is no video* folder or link or file in my /dev directory and I can't stream video directly from the appropriate 'special file' inside /dev/bus/usb/00*/00*
My machine is ubuntu 10.4 64-bit

I've had no trouble with it until attempting to add new music to my banshee music library and ipod. I've copied the music into my music folder and tried to convert to MP3 with sound converter but it keeps popping up with the warning "Cannot overwrite source files". I tried to convert the files to MP3 directly from the cd but that didn't work either.

I've been working on a small program to perform a very specific and useful task of quickly and efficiently converting videos to go on any Apple Ipod or Iphone. This includes both classic and 5th generation Ipods as well. Ibulk is a command-line only program but incredibly easy to use and runs off FFmpeg with AAC functionality. The program comes with a Read Me file which will explain its options and instructions in concise detail. Ibulk converts several videos in its input folder to the desired H.264 or XviD video encoding to its output folder. All videos are created in mp4 format with 160Kbps 48000Hz audio sound quality (highest setting an Ipod can handle) and both video encoders at the highest bitrate an Ipod can handle with the exception of some videos which will be auto-adjusted to meet the Ipod's requirements. Ibulk is written in the native unix/linux language and so it should work on any linux distro.
