Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Set Media Playback Keys As Hotkeys For VLC?

Jul 31, 2010

I've seen a couple of unsolved topics on this while researching, but they're all old and I'm hoping somebody's found a solution by now.My laptop has the following keys that I want to assign as global hotkeys to VLC Media Player so that I can use them for... well, for their intended purpose:

Play/Pause (aka XF86AudioPlay)
Prev Track (aka XF86AudioPrev)
Next Track (aka XF86AudioNext)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Amarok Ignores Media Keys

Aug 21, 2011

Updated Ubuntu 10.04. Amarok 2.3.0. Dell Inspiron 1526.My laptop has next, previous, and play/pause buttons that I would like to work with Amarok. Amarok's default configuration appears to globally map these buttons exactly as I would like. Amarok calls the buttons Media Next, Media Previous, and Media Play. If I specify a custom mapping and hit the button, it maps the Media Next, Media Previous, and Media Play as expected. (And indeed if I try to some other command to this, Amarok warns me that it's multiply defined.) Clearly Amarok is capable of seeing these inputs.

However, they simply don't work. Outside of setting a custom key, Amarok does not respond to them, even if Amarok has focus. If I change the mapping from Global to Shortcut, they still don't work.I found some online discussions about this, but all appear to be Amarok 1.x era. The configuration settings appear very different and not relevant. Can anyone suggest on how to get these buttons working in my Amarok?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: KeyTouch Looks Fine But Media Keys Don't Work

Jan 2, 2011

I have a logitech dinovo wireless keyboard with those extra multimedia keys on it like Volume Up, Volume Down, and Mute. They didn't do anything so I installed KeyTouch. I was able to select my keyboard from the list in KeyTouch, and if everything was working right then at that point all my extra keys would work. But they still didn't do anything. So I went into the Keytouch editor to make my own custom profile. You click add to add a new key and then it asks you to press a key. So I press the key (Mute) and it recognizes it, and then you select what action you want it to do. I did this for Mute, Volume Up and Volume Down. But yet they still don't work!

Now obviously it detects my key presses (keycode) just fine when I added the new key. So it should do the assigned action when I press that key. What I *want* it to do is mute or change the volume of the Headphones. But as I said that wasn't working at all for some reason. So to narrow it down I instead set the Mute key to simply launch firefox. But it still doesn't work. So there is some disconnect... in the keytouch editor it's detecting the key just fine, but afterwards when you press Mute it doesn't do the action it's supposed to.

Ubuntu Servers :: 8.04 Server: Media Playback Is Interrupted

May 12, 2010

I use a headless 8.04 server for media storage. The system is a P4, 2Gb RAM, gigabit network. Some cpu/IO heavy processes are scheduled to run at night, typically the server is at about 3-6% CPU load, but memory is pretty fully used:

Tasks: 95 total, 1 running, 94 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.0%us, 0.0%sy, 0.0%ni,100.0%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 2075584k total, 1944612k used, 130972k free, 30472k buffers
Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 1364788k cached

When playing back media (DVD, MP3) from the server, I find that playback gets interrupted every 10-15 minuted for about 5 seconds, and then resumes.

Ubuntu :: Removed Pulse - No Media Keys

Oct 3, 2010

I removed pulse because of an issue with HDMI sound, that issue is completely solved now that I'm only using ALSA but I have two issues:

1. My media keys don't higher/lower/mute volume

2. When I go to system -> preferences -> sound, it just comes up with a "waiting for sound system to respond" (but my sound works fine, everything is smooth without pulse other than these two issues)

Debian Multimedia :: Enable Hotkeys With LXDE On Jessie

Apr 27, 2015

I've been using debian for well over a year, previously with the gnome desktop. I never really liked how much memory and CPU it used, but many things like the hotkeys worked out of the box, and it was relatively easy to configure. After upgrading to Jessie I decided I'd give LXDE a go given it was lightweight and seemed more complete than e17.

However, after over a day struggling to get everything to work just right, I am still unable to use use my hotkeys (volume control, brightness control, etc.). The volume can be controlled through the GUI, but the brightness seems to have no control whatsoever. In any event, I installed the drivers and firmware for the hardware and used the instructions in the link to try and configure the key bindings, but nothing has worked: [URL] ....

:Questions#Change_hotkeys I'm not sure what to do now.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Global Hotkeys To Control Banshee/Rhythmbox/etc Volume With PulseAudio?

Jan 14, 2010

For awhile now, I've been trying to set two global hotkeys to control my volume level in Banshee. Before anyone comes in here and says to use the Volume Up/Volume Down keybinds in gnome-keybinding-properties, that does not work. That controls the master volume. I'm looking for a global hotkeys that control JUST the application volume.I've been playing around now, and I think I might have found a way. Since 9.10, Pulseaudio is integrated and the default sound manager. It also allows controlling the application volume level. While changing the volume would be through Pulseaudio and not in the specific application, this would work.

My question is if there's a way to set a keybind to control a specific application's volume within Pulseaudio? Or even a way to set a keybind to the event that happens when a specific application's volume is turned up or down within Pulseaudio.

Ubuntu :: Global Hotkeys On Audacious Don't Respond Unless Open Preferences, Open Settings For Global Hotkeys, Then Close Down The Settings?

Feb 19, 2010

I have two major issues, and one minor one, after I started using Ubuntu, I tried searching the forum for them, but couldn't find anything relevant to my problems.First issue: Screenshots and the cursor. This is probably a very easily fixed issue, but none-the-less, I can not figure it out.How do I NOT include the cursor in my screenshots on Ubuntu 9.10?What I do is, I press the Prt Scrn button, and my cursor is always there in the image, and I don't want that.Second is pidgin.I love it, but every time I boot it up, my friendly name is reverted back to firefoxfag.I think it has something to do with me using gmail for msn, but I'm not sure...Also, as a last very small issue, the global hotkeys on audacious don't respond unless i open preferences, open settings for global hotkeys, then close down the settings..

Debian Multimedia :: VLC Playback Broken By Deb-multimedia Upgrade

Jun 14, 2011

I am using debian squeeze and did an aptitude upgrade yesterday. Today I've found that VLC won't play any video; the files open and the audio plays, but the video is black. The aptitude log is below.

I note that VLC received a security upgrade a few days ago, but my suspicion is that the source of this problem is more likely to be the upgrade of libavcodec52 from version 4:0.5.2.6 -> 5:0.6.1+svn20101128-0.2. I believe this upgrade came from the debian-multimedia stable repo I have enabled.

Does this sound right, and what could I do to fix my VLC playback? This is new territory for me, and I'm slightly surprised that such an upgrade would come from the stable branch of debian-multimedia (although I know this is not an official source).

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Applications Recognize Gnome Shortcuts For Multimedia Keys?

Jan 8, 2011

Recently I installed MPlayer with its default gui and its interfaces SMPlayer and GnomeMPlayer. When I'm using GnomeMPlayer it responds to multimedia keys as configured in Gnome shortcuts, even if it's minimized or running in another virtual desktop. But it doesn't happen to the other two gui's mentioned above. I have also noticed that native Gnome applications or with Gnome support like Banshee and Rhythmbox rspond to multimedia keys even when the gui is closed and they are running only in the system tray. But it never occurs in non-Gnome applications like VLC, MPlayer and others. Jetaudio wich responds to these keys in MS Windows running under Wine doesn't even recognize them.

So I came to the conclusion that only native Gnome applications or with Gnome support recognize multimedia keys because, as it seems, they receive the signal from Gnome configurations. Others applications doesn't do so. Here is my question: Is there some way to make all applications recognize the configuration of Gnome multimedia keys shortcuts? (Of course it would not be fine if they recognized ALL Gnome shortcuts because they could conflict with shortcuts from another applications. The idela would be that they recognize ONLY Gnome multimedia shortcuts.)

Debian Multimedia :: XF86Audio Multimedia Keys Not Working In Squeeze

Jun 23, 2011

I finally installed Squeeze on my laptop and found out that the XF86Audio multimedia keys do not work.

When I press them, they're correctly identified by xev but they do not produce the desired effect (raise/lower/mute volume, play/pause/stop/prev/next song in media players like Sonata).

Funnily enough though, they do work in Audacious, which has its own plugin to manage XF86Audio media keys.

So it's like the action of pressing these keys is not intercepted by the system and no event is triggered.

I think this might be due to a missing package or configuration but I have no idea where to look...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Playback Like In Windows 7

Feb 14, 2010

Is there any way to make Ubuntu play sound like Windows 7? I mean when i, for example, listen to music in Windows 7 the sound is much clearer and besides that i can use room correction to obtain a better surround feeling, but when i listen to music in Ubuntu the sound is not very clear and it sounds like stereo even though the sound is played back through all the speakers (the bass is also a little bit to high).

So far i've tried installing the alsa driver and modifying the output levels of each channel, but didn't quite have the same result as the room correction feature in Windows, and the sound wasn't any clearer either. Note: I have an onboard Realtek soundcard and Logitech x530 speakers

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Intermittent VLC Crashes During Playback

Apr 8, 2010

I've been running into issues with VLC crashing now and again, particularly when seeking through the current item using the bar (as opposed to Ctrl-Right Arrow/Left Arrow); it may have happened in a few other spots, but that's usually when I'm not at my keyboard. All files are stored locally on my HD, mostly .avi video. For the most part, when I'm using VLC, I've got Firefox and maybe a Nautilus window running as well. CPU use, Memory use, and System load stay pretty well down (and I've never managed to get my swap usage above 120MiB of the 1.2GiB on the Swap partition).

I've tried removing and reinstalling VLC, no dice; about screen lists Ver 1.0.2 Goldeneye. A side effect of this is that, until I restart the system, the screen is unable to be put to sleep at it's timeout; in the notification bar of the top panel, an icon appears and (if the mouse is left there) a little box will appear with text as follows:
Session active, not inhibited, screen idle.
If you can see this text, your display server is broken and you should notify your distributor.
Please see [URL] for more information.

The URL there listed doesn't have any information that seems to be useful, but, I'd presume that VLC does something to prevent the screen turning off while it's playing (a situation where most folks aren't going to be typing or mousing around), which is undone when VLC ends cleanly (and re-opening, then exiting doesn't fix it).
