Jan 19, 2010I have an annoying problem with kubuntu9.10. I've reeinstalled it and instead of starting up dragon player which then recommends installing extra packages for multimedia, i chose to manually install the restricted extras (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras).Everything seems to work, except for playback of dvd's which doesn't work. When I search in kpackagekit for libdvdcss, w32codecs etc it can't find anything. It seem as if it lacks some software sources but when I have everything enabled (universe-restricted-multiverse)So, what can I do to install these files (and others, don't know everything to play (encrypted) dvds).

Mar 20, 2010My parent's hard disc is failing and I am trying to boot into single user mode to run fsck. If I try to enter through terminal with "sudo init 1" the screen goes black and the computer freezes. I tried to enter single user during start-up with ESC, but the machine still boots straight into a normal session. I was going to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to for the machine to display the grub menu option but I do not seem to have a menu.lst under /boot/grub. Does anyone have any ideas as to where this file might be or an alternate way to enter single user mode?

May 15, 2010i'm having choppy sound in 10.04. i didn't have it in 9.10 and i don't know enough about how it works to try to fix it.
here are some things i have noticed, however.
1. the choppy sound is present in a 64bit and 32bit install. at first i thought it may just be a 64bit issue so i reinstalled to 32bit and it is still present.
2. it does not seem to matter what media type i am playing. i notice it most with videos from videos and music from pandora.
3. it seems to occur more often at intense moments of music. i'm not really sure how to describe it, but it is typically the climax of a song where it is a little louder and more intense.

Up until this evening, my built-in microphone worked fine with skype, google voice, etc.Tonight while talking on google voice, I made the mistake of trying to adjust the microphone volume at the same time.Suddenly the volume cut down to a tiny, tinny little sound.Now I can't get the microphone to work normally again. Some weird facts:
1) the built-in microphone still works fine in audacity and gnome-sound-recorder
2) the built-in microphone still works in Windows
3) the built-in microphone shows sound input in the pulseaudio applet->Volume Meter [code]....

Dec 1, 2010Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 with Wubi (took forever to figure out how to get the wubi.exe to recognize the 10.10 iso) and I don't have sound coming from my speakers. Audio works fine with headphones, but output from speakers is non-existent.
I get sound when I boot into Windows 7, so I doubt it had something to be with the actual speakers. I'm really new to Ubuntu (but loving it!) so troubleshooting is a little difficult for me, especially with terminal commands.

Sep 11, 2010When I play games and want to quit the system freezes and can't exit at any way. Sometimes even freezes while playing. Tried Urban Terror, Enemy Territory. 0 A.D. freezed while playing, but i was running it from terminal and in window mode so Alt+tab helped me out.
I have Ati Radeon HD5650, 4 gb ram Turion P520 in laptop.

Sep 24, 2010The microphone of my laptop doesn't work, I'm on a HP Pavilion dv7 and neither the build-in or a microphone plugged in works.
I tried many things (like this: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/78574) to get it work, but none has worked. But I'm quite sure it worked in some earlier ubuntu version.
I'm running kubuntu so it's not a problem in pulseaudio.
Can anyone please help me with this, because I really hate it I have to restart in windows every time for the mic. code...

Oct 11, 2010I do not manage to get my my ipod touch 4g recognized by ubuntu 10.04. First time I tried, it was recognized as a camera and not as a media player. I tried to install a few other packages. Now it is not recognized at all....
I followed guidelines on the forum and installed libimobiledevice, ifuse, usbmuxd and libplist. Note I unlock my ipod before connecting it.
Here is what I get with ideviceinfo

No device found, is it plugged in?
I see a lot of post related to new ipod touch 4g installation but I think I screwed up somewhere in my configuration since the ipod is not recognized at all.

Apr 30, 2011I've been trying to configure my revo R3700 over the last day and I'm finally there. HDMI sound is working apart from the fact that all sound is crackling. Sound is working through analogue without issue its just HDMI that is distorted
I initially did the command
aplay -Dplughw:1,7 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Which produced no crackling or distortion. I then tried a mp3 which was distorted and crackling, upon trying the same command as above later on, this too started to be distorted
Searched through the forum and theres a few people that have had this issue and have resolved it simply by edited alsamixer however this isn't working.

Feb 22, 2011I'm having this problem on two desktop machines running Squeeze with GNOME. NetworkManager simply will not resolve DNS. In network settings, it picks up my router under "DNS Servers". However, applications such as Iceweasel will not load domain names, though the IP addresses do work. From command line, DNS is working fine.
I realise I can fix this by adding my ISP's DNS servers to resolv.conf, but I'm looking for a proper solution to this problem, as I have experienced it before and probably will again.

Nov 4, 2010I've had problems with Amarok crashing so I reinstalled. I think its the Nvidia Driver, so I read on another thread. I tried the uninstall and init 3 thing and needed gcc and a few more files that were not installed. In the end I had enough and reinstalled. Now Amarok runs. If I install the nvidia driver I have an idea that it will crash like Ayrton Senna, or maybe quicker. so is there a simple work around.

Mar 12, 2011Did my 11.4 upgrade today, and so far things have been going pretty good, but I'm having a slight problem with my iPhone4 being "seen" correctly by my desktop environment, and I was hoping someone would be able to answer a question or two for me.
In the 11.4 RPM for usbmuxd, a udev rule is installed which controls the "mounting" and "unmounting" of the iOS device. The udev rule expects a certain username and group to be present, as it runs under that specfic username (but unfortunately the RPM doesn't create the username and group, and neither are created at install time). This prevents iOS devices from being seen correctly by programs like banshee, amarok, etc.
Logging in as 'root' and spawning the 'usbmuxd' process as root works fine, but it doesn't work so well for other non-root users.
Does anyone have any idea(s) as to what group, etc that the "usbmuxd" user should be in?
Once I get this working, I'd be happy to write up a FAQ for getting the iPhone working under openSUSE .. .this is something that has been hit or miss for me with OS (and has worked pretty well with some other distros)...

i installed ubuntu karmic 9.10 and evrything seems to be working fine including wireless and ethernet which was not working previously ..
but now with alsa my mic was not working and hence i uninstalled alsa and installes oss4 as was directed by other forums ..
however with alsa my sound was working in skype but now nothing seems to work ..
i am getting error as "problem with audio playback"
i am using skype 2.0 as 2.1 was said to be not compatible with oss4
also the sounds in my pdgin im client is not working ..

i have tried checking mic using ossrecord but dint get ne output..
i also tried sound recorder which also dint work with both alsa and oss4
now the thing is with oss4 even the speakers are not working for some applications like pdgin and skype which was working with alsa

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: White Sparkles / Spots Over Dark Areas Of Videos - Resolve This?
Mar 31, 2011Today while watching a video on my PC I noticed some white sparkles or spots appearing at the dark/blackish areas of the video.
The first thing that came to my mind was that the video may be corrupted so I tried another one. But the same thing happened with it too.
Then I changed the video driver of Smplayer from vdpau to xv but the same thing.
Then I tried playing those videos with vlc but those white things appeared there as well.
Here is an example of the problem. I have circled the areas with green.

Apr 3, 2010I'm using 9.10 on acer aspire one (not the netbook remix).im using the default messanger client empathy.everything else works fine but when i try to video chat the video chat begins but if the other person even moves a litte or even nods his head then the video becomes so choppy that u cant see anything and then after 5 min comes back to normal for a second or two.i have all the latest updates and gstreamer0.10-ugly-multiverse which is required for video chat b/w empathy and gtalk.
