Ubuntu :: Messed With Partition Now Windows Will Not Boot

I am in a bit of a jam. I had a dual boot backtrack 5 with windows 7, I had no need for the backtrack partition anymore so i deleted the backtrack partition and extended the windows NTFS to take up all free space, now my computer boots to grub but it will not boot into windows. I am currently in the process of creating a ubuntu live cd to do the following to repair the windows Master boot record.
sudo apt-get insall lilo
sudo lilo -m /dev/sda mbr

I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and now it's messed up my Windows Vista partition. When I try to load Windows it boots to a strange login menu with low resolution. It then takes me to a screen with options like Repair/Fix, Recovery, Complete Recovery... I'll click Repair and and then it will say No errors found, Shut down, Restart.

This seems to be a variant of a problem many people have had, but after several hours trawling through various forums, I haven't seen a reliable match for my situation.In brief:Adding a third boot partition (of Ubuntu) to my existing dual boot of OSX 10.6 and Windows 7 seems to have crippled the Windows boot from working, because Grub apparently takes over the process. Yet Grub does *not* appear to be on the Windows partition.
More verbose:I have an older MacBook Pro (3.1, running Snow Leopard) that I recently refitted with a new 240GB SSD HD. With the extra space (it was previously only 120GB) I decided to add a dual boot with Windows 7 using bootcamp. This all went swimmingly well.Encouraged, I decided to follow this Lifehacker article's suggestion and triple-boot the machine with Ubuntu (I'd never used Linux before):So I now have the nice rEFIt boot partition selection screen, and, indeed, I'm up and running in Ubuntu, and enjoying it.
Only one problem: I can't get into Windows any more. If I try to go in through rEFIt *or* by holding down OPT at startup and selecting the windows partition directly, the result is the same: I get thrown into Grub's selector, and selecting the Windows partition from there leads to an error message and a dead end.Having read through numerous postings, I get the impression that Grub is doing something or living somewhere that it ought not to be, but in most cases I've seen, people had accidentally installed Grub onto the Windows partition (or indeed onto EVERY partition). So far as I can tell, this isn't the case with me. Here's my boot summary:

I am currently running a dual boot machine with Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows Vista.Is there any way I can delete the Linux partition and Grub boot loader without affecting the Windows partition at all?I would also like to be able to repartition all of the space that was previously occupied by Linux.

I had Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows7 installed on my computer. I thought of trying fedora 15 and installed it on a different partition. Now only fedora and Windows boot up. Can I triple boot my system and how? If not, how to get back Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 as before.

is it possible to use a Windows-based recovery partition on a dual-boot computer to overwrite the Ubuntu partition and remove the GRUB loader? For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?

I'm using Karmic Koala 9.10 (amd64) on /dev/sdb6 and windows 7 on /dev/sda2. I mounted my windows 7 partition in Nautilus. I copied some files and made some folders from Nautilus onto my windows 7 partition. I tried booting into windows 7 but it failed on loading Windows 7. It then gave me a blue screen flashes and then restarted. The blue screen flashes so quickly i cannot determine the exact issue. I tried booting into windows 7 in Safe mode. It fails to load and gives what i believe is the same blue screen. I used to be able to read and write files onto my old XP and Vista partitions. Now with windows 7, I seems that I can't.

Last night I was making a boot usb drive with usb startup creator onto a USB external well I, messed up and lost the partition table for 2 USB drives: my 500 gb hard drive was pluged in whilst i was doing this silly i know it was partitioned 251 gb its now showing as 500 gb but the data is still on drive it seems the file system is gone or damaged

I'm a new Ubuntu user and I'm already a fan, but I have a small problem. I wanted to dualboot my laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows Vista. I already had Vista (and hated it), so I installed Ubuntu. It all went well, until I messed up something with the partitions (in Vista of course..). Then my laptop wouldn't start up and I got an error message ( I don't remember what it was.). So I installed Ubuntu again on another partition and it is all working now (both Ubuntu and Vista). But now I have a partition, of 15 GB I think, that I can't use for anything. I would really want that back. So my question is: Does somebody have an idea how I can fix that?

I'm currently on a work trip with my Asus G72GX laptop for non-work use (I'm posting from my work laptop). Yesterday, I accidentally booted into my laptop's recovery partition (from the Grub2 bootloader). Before I realized that that's what was happening, it booted into some kind of recovery program which ended up in an error. I restarted the laptop and couldn't get into the bootloader anymore. Now, the only thing that comes up is an error -- "error: unknown filesystem." Below that, it gives me the "grub rescue>" prompt. Most of the commands that sites list for grub rescue only return "Unknown command". ls works and lists all of my partitions: (hd0), (hd0,msdos, (hd0,msdos7), etc. down to msdos1. When I "ls (hd0,msdos" (etc, etc) it says "error: unknown filesystem."
I then started looking into booting from a Live Ubuntu USB drive. I've tried 11.04 and 10.04 now and they both do the same thing. I put them on an 8GB flash drive (only 1 at any given time) using Universal USB Installer and was able to get to the Ubuntu menu (Run Ubuntu from this USB, Install Ubuntu on a Hard Disk, etc.) If I try either "Run Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu", the screen flickers and comes right back to that menu.BTW, my 3 operating systems are: Windows 7 HP 64-bit, Mythbuntu 10.10 64-bit, and Windows XP 32-bit. Laptop hardware: Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz, 6GB RAM, Nvidia 8800 GTX video card.

Tuesday night I wanted to make a backup of my Ubuntu ext4 partition via Clonezilla so I configured that an image had to be made and it would be saved on the NTFS external disk. But it said it needed 23 hours to create a 5gb backup, so I resetted my computer as this took too long. But after this, Ubuntu nor Windows recognized my drive.
I called Seagate and they told me after troubleshooting 30 minutes, that there is no option of fixing the drive and I had to send it to RMA. What could be wrong? Clonezilla works via a bootable ISO on Debian. The disk drive is still spinning. I already rebooted the external drive, but it's not working. In Linux the disk is no longer mounted and cannot be mounted:

I used QParted to size one my hard drive's NTFS partition to make unallocated space available to install SUSE. QParted created the the unalloacted space fine and I got SUSE up and running.
However, the NTFS partition is messed up. The QParted GUI and the SUSE's Disk management GUI shows it as NTFS drive with 319 GB space. However, nothing seem to be able to read/write to it. QParted gives a warning "Unable to read contents of this file system! Because of this some operations maybe unavailable." Is there any way to fix this NTFS partition so I can recover data from it?

wanting a dual-boot, 500GB hdd was formatted as above, Win Vista x64 Recovery CD was created, and antiX-M11 (as Swift Linux 0_1_1) installed. Now, at startup, machine boots to antiX and not Vista. User wants it the other way around. I think I should have reordered the partitions and not installed GRUB in MBR. EasyBCD is the preferred boot loader for User. This is a learning experience but due to time constraints and not being at my home where references are available, EasyBCD is on a USB stick -- should I boot to the Vista Recovery CD and then try to install EasyBCD to sda3 from it, uninstall antiX (but this will not fix the MBR problem, will it?), or edit fstab or what

I just started using Ubuntu 10.04 for development reasons and installed Ubuntu on a seperate harddrive with dualboot option with Windows 7.Today Win 7 got an update and I mysteriously got bumped back to the grub screen after selecting Windows boot option, but my Ubuntu was ok. After that I probably did the worst I could, and googled the problem and tried out some years-old advices which messed up my ubuntu boot as well.I am currently using my computer through Ubuntu Live Usb.

Don't have the Windows install disk. Tried to reinstall Ubuntu from the disk but it hangs at a black screen with aIf there's no disk it boots into grub rescue>.Edit: Also tried Super Grub Disk.Like the Ubuntu disk, computer doesn't seem to even acknowledge its existence and still boots into the "no such partition grub rescue>" command prompt screen.Edit2: Going to try Rescatux, I guess.Edit 3: I'm able to boot from the Ubuntu disk now, but it won't let me create a partition to install Ubuntu like it did before, offering only to replace Windows or to "try ubuntu".Edit 4: The following how-to does not work in my terminal. So Ubuntu needs to go so I booted onto a live CD of Ubuntu and used Gparted to delete every one of my linux partitions. I created a ntfs partition, will windows boot on this. When i tried it before it said didn't recognize file system so I deleted the linux file system and created a ntfs one. Is that all?

Upon trying to boot Windows I got through the GRUB startup selections and then i get stuck at a black screen displaying "Starting Up. . ." That would be no problem, I just boot ubuntu instead and mount the partition to access the programs I'm looking for. Now I get an interesting error message:
"Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_mst_post_read_fixup: magic: 0x00150000 size: 4096 usa_ofs: 0 usa_count: 1040: Invalid argument Actual VCN (0x15000011d92501) of index buffer is different from expected VCN (0x1). Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details."
I would run chkdsk in windows if I could, but that's my problem in the first place.

After upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4 i can't boot windows partition. the only thing i get it's a blinking underscore after choosing it from grub. under ubuntu the window partition seams to be ok, and i can access every file.
this is my partition table:
sda1 - ntfs
sda2 - extended
sda5 - swap
sda6 - ext4 linux (0x83)
is there any tool to config grub? like yast on suse? (off the topic : is there any "grafic" version of grub?)

I'm running a dual boot of Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. For months now everything has been just wonderful. Recently, however, I tried to add another partition (in windows) and saw that my Ubuntu partition is recognized as RAW. I formatted it as NTFS originally. In Ubuntu, it is recognized correctly (ext4). I don't know what's going on. I'd like to be able to install drivers to recognize this partition in Windows. Will I have to reformat? I'm not sure if it's at all connected, but probably worth mentioning: while booting into Ubuntu, I received an error about "usplash mode failed." It also said something about "mount of filesystem failed." (I really, really wished I had written down the error message.) Everything seems to work now.

So I'm a total non-geek, and am totally stuck. A long time ago, I installed ubuntu to dual-boot with windows 7, and everything was peachy. I recently decided to get rid of the ubuntu partition since I've got another laptop that I'm using exclusively for ubuntu (probably a bad decision, but I'm sticking with it.) I backed up the files I care about, and then I deleted all partitions (from windows) except the C:, leaving me with the C: and unallocated space.
Of course, when I go to boot up my computer, it gets stuck on the "loading...please wait" screen that it used to show before showing me my various boot options (several ubuntu ones, and then the windows loader at the bottom). It may say something else before loading, I can't tell since my screen is intact. I suspect my windows 7 installation is still there, but I can't boot into it. I have an HP Pavilion DV2911. I have a live disk, but my optical drive no longer works. I *can* boot from USB (and load stuff onto a flash dive) but I don't know what to do. I have no recovery disk or partition, since I installed windows 7 myself, probably badly. Where do I go from here? Is it a simple boot.exe or MSR error that I can fix? Did I do something worse than that?

I had dual boot on my Asus laptop, Windows and Hardy. Then my Windows XP crashed and the person who repaired installed Windows 7 but didn't preserve the dual boot prompt on startup. I've explored BIOS but there seems no way of accessing my Ubuntu partition that way.

My old man wanted to try linux, and he got an Ubuntu install (ill check version tomorrow).Anyways, we installed it, but during boot of either it (going though a boot slector menu, hitting F it shows only two lines on the screen (something vaguely similar too):GRUB loading stage1.5GRUB error 21 (or 27 cant quite remeber)
I did, unfortunately, have to step out while it installed leaving him at the helm. now the main problem is this: Ubuntu will not boot, and neither will the previous (contained on a totally different harddrive) Windows XP. A third OS (Vista) still boots, but unfortunately my dad had all his apps on his XP drive. Now, the ubuntu we put on a third Hharddrive (Both Vista and XP boot from two IDE docks in the machine (one Primary master and one secondary master)), but the ubuntu was installed on an enclosed (In the case) SATA drive partition. it seemed to have installed but when selecting to boot form it, or the harddrive with the XP system, i get the above error. however, vista boots completely without problems. Anyone ever seen sometihng like this? the computer responds to no commands beyond ctrl-alt-delete at this lock up, and no dos/command prompt opens up. it just sits there at these two lines until either ctrl=alt=delete or a hard reset are pressed.

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

I got tired of dual booting on my old computer so on the new computer I am planning to run XP on VMware Player. The problem is that on the new computer neither Ubuntu or XP can "see" the FAT32 partition. I intend to use the FAT32 partition for photo images and old Windows files and need access from both Ubintu and XP.
Partition table entries are not in disk order.

10 yr old Dell laptop with NO WORKING DRIVES. i was dual booting xp and xubuntu when i decided it was time to cut the cord. so i installed gparted and deleted my windows partition. now it won't boot. my assumption is that i never installed grub. i got a usb to ide cable so i can access the hard drive from my desktop (xp home edition). i read that grub should be in a folder called "boot". i see on my hard drive that i have: "disks", "winboot" "install", "uninstall-wubi.exe", and "xubuntu.ico". if i expand the "disks" folder, there is a "boot" folder containing another folder called "grub", but the folder is empty. is this where i install it? am i an idiot and missing something stupid? where do i download grub if i need it?
