Ubuntu :: Make Shift+Numpad Act As Home/End Keys?

Sep 1, 2011

In Ubuntu used to be a keyboard option called "Make Shift+NumPad work like MS Windows" or something. It allowed me to press for example Shift+NumPad 7 and it would get registered as the "Home" key. Without that option the shift key acts like a temporary NumLock and it'll pick up a "7" instead. My regular Home/End keys are somewhat out of reach, so I wonder where the setting is in XFCE. I'm using the latest XUbuntu 11.04.

Ubuntu :: Shift + Home Keys Not Working?

Jun 20, 2010

I have a Lenovo G550 Notebook, with a US keyboard layout (dedicated Numpad on the right). Now the quirk is.. the 'Home', 'End', 'PageUp' & 'PageDn' keys on the numpad do work in Ubuntu (They double up as 7, 1, 9 & 3 respectively, when Numlock is turned on), but what doesn't is Shift + 'Home', 'End', 'PageUp' or 'PageDn'.. Is there a setting to do this? I just have gotten used to it in Windows (for say, easily removing the typed in URL on a web-browser, using the keyboard), it seems like alls' lost without it

Ubuntu :: Keys Tab / Caps / Shift / Ctrl / Alt / Super Stop Working.

Oct 16, 2010

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10, with KDE 4.5.2, what I've noticed is every so often my Tab, Caps, Shift, Ctrl, Alt, Super keys stop working. I'd been running Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome and hadn't ever come across this issue. I'm not sure if this is related to KDE 4.5.2 or is possibly because I updated to 10.10 and would also occur on a Gnome environment. If I switch to my virtual machine (VMWare Workstation 7.1.2 build-301548 which I was able to get working on 10.10 using URL.... the keys work within that but if I switch back to my host desktop they stop working. To fix it I've found logging out or unplugging the keyboard and plugging it into a different USB port fixes it.

In the kde realm, with the dolphin file browser, I can open a terminal in whatever folder is in the gui by using the shift and f4 keys. I'd like to be able to accomplish the same in gnome with the nautilus file browser but can't figure out how to do same. So far I have to open a terminal and then cd to the desired folder. Or do I have to use some other file browser and which one?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Logitech Wireless Keyboard And Shift And Ctrl Keys

Mar 2, 2011

So Ive had this issue off and on for a while now, but have never really looked to see if others have had it or how I can fix it. Essentially the problem is that kde seems to randomly decide that I am holding down the shift or ctrl key.Im using a logitech cordless desktop s510, running openSUSE 11.3 x86_64. Ive had this problem on and off using a couple of different logitech keyboards. The most often time when it happens with the shift key is when im coding, and the control key when Im running a keyboard shortcut.

I can usually fix the issue by holding down the key that kde thinks is pressed for like 5-10 seconds and releasing, however sometimes I have to unplug and then replug in the usb adapter for kde to get things right. This doesnt happen if im running a non-graphical terminal (thouhg I cant say whether it happens in gnome as I dont have gnome installed) so I am thinking its related to kde. The keyboard can be plugged into other computers and they dont act the same way.

This gets esspecially annoying when Im coding (because of all the symbols) and generally when the issue occurs. I think it may have something to do with the key being pressed for over a certain length.

Slackware :: Home And End Keys In A Terminal

Apr 22, 2010

I am having trouble using home and end keys in a terminal, to go to the end or beginning of a line. With xterm it will only work with the bash shell, while under zsh nothing is output. With urxvt, mrxvt and aterm pressing the keys in either bash or zsh always just results in a tilde being printed. Is this perhaps because urxvt, aterm and mrxvt are emulating a different terminal type to xterm by default?

Why does xterm work for bash but not for zsh? I don't just want a solution, I want to understand why it doesn't work by default. As a side question, is there any way to press alt+enter within a terminal? I tried to use wicd-curses where you have to use alt+enter to save settings, and it didnt register in any of the terminals, even xterm.

Slackware :: Make Special Keys Run Commands Without X?

Jun 6, 2010

I'm installing Slackware 13.1 on a Samsung N150 netbook and am stuck trying to make the special keys do their normal functions when using a virtual terminal, that is not under X. Under X + Xfce it can be done via Menu->Settings->Keyboard->"Application Shortcuts".

In essence the question is how to make a special key (example Fn+Up to increase screen brightness) run a command in the background.

Changed title and text to make clear that the command should not run in a virtual terminal but while the display is being used for a virtual terminal, that is after Ctrl+Alt+F2 for example.

Debian Configuration :: Make Fn Keys Work Independently Of Environment

Jan 5, 2016

I want fn* keys working for all users in all DE/WM and at tty too. I want it even if nobody logged in. Is it possible? How to set it up?

I mean these keys:

toggle wifikbd backlight +/−screen backlight +/−enable/disable screentoggle screensenable/disable touchpadvolume controls

I understand that some of them may work only with Xorg (e.g. toggle screens), but screen and kbd backlight and volume may work at tty too (because I can change this from tty when xorg is down). I know how to do it all from the console, but I want to bind keys with actions.

E.g. I can change kbd backlight with dbus and attach this action to key in my wm config, but it is not what I want. I want to make it global. I don’t understand which layer may provide the functionality for all users. Now only two keys works as I expect: toggle wifi and toggle touchpad. I haven’t set it up, it works out of the box.

Asus N56VZ, Debian stretch.
Code: Select alluname -a
Linux isquabook 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1 (2015-05-24) x86_64 GNU/Linux

General :: Make Shared Keys .ssh/authorized_keys And Sudo Work Together?

Jul 15, 2010

I've setup the .ssh/authorized_keys and am able to login with the new "user" using the pub/private key ... I have also added "user" to the sudoers list ... the problem I have now is when I try to execute a sudo command, something simple like:

$ sudo cd /root

it will prompt me for my password, which I enter, but it doesn't work (I am using the private key password I set)Also, ive disabled the users password using

$ passwd -l user

I am trying to harden my system ... the ultimate goal is to use pub/private keys to do logins versus simple password authentication. I've figured out how to set all that up via the authorized_keys file.Additionally I will ultimately prevent server logins through the root account. But before I do that I need sudo to work for a second user (the user which I will be login into the system with all the time).

For this second user I want to prevent regular password logins and force only pub/private key logins, if I don't lock the user via" passwd -l user ... then if i dont use a key, i can still get into the server with a regular password. But more importantly I need to get sudo to work with a pub/private key setup with a user whos had his/her password disabled.

1) I've adjusted /etc/ssh/sshd_config and set PasswordAuthentication no This will prevent ssh password logins (be sure to have a working public/private key setup prior to doing this

2) I've adjusted the sudoers list visudo and added

root ALL=(ALL) ALL
dimas ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL

3) root is the only user account that will have a password, I am testing with two user accounts "dimas" and "sherry" which do not have a password set (passwords are blank, passwd -d user)

The above essentially prevents everyone from logging into the system with passwords (a public/private key must be setup). Additionally users in the sudoers list have admin abilities. They can also su to different accounts. So basically "dimas" can sudo su sherry, however "dimas can NOT do su sherry. Similarly any user NOT in the sudoers list can NOT do su user or sudo su user.

Ubuntu :: Numpad Navigation Doesn't Work In Console Under X

Feb 12, 2010

First of all, this is not famous problem, which solves by unchecking "Allow to control the pointer using the keyboard". My numpad navigation does not work in console under X. Nor in Konsole/KDE/Kubuntu (9.10), nor in Console/Gnome/Ubuntu (9.04). It works in graphics applications. It works in system console in text mode (Ctrl+Alt+F1..6) too. But in Konsole I can't navigate cursor by numpad arrows in Midnight Commander or text editors. When NumLock is on - the numbers are typed. But when it off, nothing happens - cursor doesn't move. The same reaction from Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys on numpad.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: NumPad On Keyboard Is Not Working?

May 10, 2010

I'm not able to get the num pad on the keyboard working. I can switch it On and off but when I want to use it in some apps like KWrite it's not working.

It seems to be a generally error, because I tried several keyboards. USB, PS2 , older ones, new Cherry, ... It's always the same. I have a german keyboard layout and all keys including the € sign and the special keys for play, stop, ... are working except the num pad.

The strange thing is. When I switch to another console e.g. ALT+F2 the num pad is working. So I think it's an problem in KDE. But I can not find the error.

I'm using OpenSuSe for a long time, but this problem never happened before.
