I tried to download Knoppix 6.0 iso, but it ran out of storage space. It was placing it into /tmp. Is there a way that I could have it placed in my /home directory, which is plenty big?

Ubuntu 10.04 and just installed it on this computer with Wubi. I had a previous version of Ubuntu on another computer and did some programming on it. My issue is that downloading a software package from the Ubuntu Software Center or the Synaptic Package manager rarely works. The download proceeds at 1000B/sec and when it gets to applying changes, it stalls out. Now, my Internet connection is solid and i can easily stream videos and download files at over 2 MB/sec.

I mean, I have the latest version of ISO (Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat) downloaded on my computer and then i) made a startup USB disk using Ubuntu's built-in startup disk creator and ii) created a bootable CD drive with that downloaded ISO. Then whenever I tried installing it inside Windows*, I notice that the installer (Wubi) begins downloading the entire ISO from the Internet. I tried disconnecting the network but that returns an error and the installation stops. I remember my good days with installing Ubuntu Karmic Koala using Wubi on my computer. It never started downloading.
The problem appears to occur with Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 (I don't care about Natty yet, though). I want to know why this happens. Since the entire ISO is here, why would it want to download the entire ISO from the Internet? It's impossible to let it download. Is there any possible solution to this problem? The reason I'm trying to install Ubuntu inside windows is that I don't want to mess with Grub. My brother installed Ubuntu on his hard drive in a separate partition and when he uninstalled it for some reason, he couldn't log in to Windows because grub was there and MBR was missing.

I'm about to recompile PHP from source and was planning to download the source code to my Ubuntu machine. Is there a standard place where all the source code goes? I know that PHP has many dependencies and would like to hopefully put it in the right place so as to satisfy as many as possible.

I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home
export HOME=~/testing/home
cd ~
screen -S testing-home
# start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc.
# test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?

I would like to move the /home directory to a different location, there only seem to be guides on how to move it to it's own partition.
I have a drive (/dev/sda5) mounted as /media/data
I would like to move /home to /media/data/home?
I have tried usermod but get the following error:
Code:
test@TestServer:/media/data$ sudo mkdir /media/data/home
test@TestServer:/media/data$ ls
home lost+found
test@TestServer:/media/data$ sudo usermod -dm /media/data/home
usermod: user '/media/data/home' does not exist

I have a dual-boot win7 and Ubuntu 10.10 and I want Ubuntu to use my windows user folder as home. I edited fstab to give me ownership and mount it to /mnt/Windows at startup but whenever I change the location of home in the Users and Groups it acts like it is changing it but it never does. I close the settings and when I re-open it, it is set back to /home/me.

I have 10.04 and have samba running.
Samba is remotely administered with webmin and aim to setup home directory sharing. I am however having some trouble getting this to work.
I was of the understanding that home directory sharing allows me to create a user in ubuntu, which samba will then pickup and offer it up as a share.
My smb.conf looks like this..
Code:
#======================= Global Settings =======================
[global]
unix extensions = no
share modes = no
security = user
[Code]....
Essentially I've found this works providing I give the samba user a password after it is automatically created using the 'Configure automatic Unix and Samba user synchronisation' option in webmin.
However if I move the location of this home folder off the main drive i.e. /home/username I get turned away at attempted login.
I've tried specifying the path in [homes] using the path = /media/discarray, but this seems to break authentication somehow.

I have used a couple of slackbuild binary packages (i.e. without doing the actually build) and have worked fine. Thanks to those who have spent the time and effort to create them.
When installing the package I wanted to know what binary files were being put on my machine and at which directory location. This was more out of curiosity.
However, now I plan to get the boost slackbuild package. It's more relevant to know where it's being installed. Is there a way to know that? Also, can I specify a different directory?

I've set up ssh passwordless logins using keygen etc.before so I know the routine.
The problem I'm currently having is setting passwordless logins when I don't have write permission to my "root" of the remote machine. More specifically the slice provided by a commercial web hosting provider. I can ssh and sftp just fine keying in the password manually but since I'm unable to create a .ssh directory in my "root" I'm unsuccessful in scripting logins. What I'm wondering is if the .ssh directory and associated security files can be placed in an alternate location such as the httpdocs directory and pass that location to ssh in a command line parameter.

I know that the question could sound weird but...I was wondering if is possible to download one or more parts of a file.
For example, the first 10 mb, or the latter ones.
I know that there are some apps that let you do segmented downloads, but, is there anyone that let you choose the segment to be downloaded? If not, can this be accomplished with any linux command-line application?

The installation appears to complete itself successfully. However, when I come to then clicking on the new Opera logo in the panel menu, nothing happens. Even after a restart.
What could I be doing wrong? How should I launch Opera?

(i've seen some methods online, but i obviously can't put a Windows CD in my DVD rom because the Backtrack4 DVD is stuck in there.

I've been tinkering around with Linux over the past couple weeks. I've played arodn with both Ubuntu 10.10 and Linux Mint 10 and it's been a 99% positive experience. I have noticed an issue regarding my internet connection.
I've noticed when I download a file in Ubuntu (either from the software manager, BitTorrent or just a regular download in Firefox), browsing the web on my computer becomes near impossible. The download itself runs at a good speed for our DSL connection (around 200 KB/sec) but anything else near a standstill. Just loading ESPN.com on my PC can take a minute or two. Someone else playing a game in the house will go from a regular 100-200 ms ping to 5000+ right when the download starts. When I stop the download, internet browsing and gaming speeds go right back to normal.
The weird thing is the same thing happened when I installed Linux Mint 10. When I boot into my Vista partition, this isn't an issue. Downloading a file in Vista doesn't affect anything, but it's happening every time in both Ubuntu and Linux Mint.
