Ubuntu :: Java Consuming Resources 10.10 - 64bit?

Dec 23, 2010

After I reboot, my java process consumes 100% of the CPU then settles down to about 40% CPU and 12% memory, status sleeping (4 core AMD) I've removed the OpenJDK and installed Sun JRE but no difference. by comparison, Firefox with a lot of tabs is at 3% CPU and 5% memory. Is it better if I go to 10.04 LTS, 32 bit?

Ubuntu :: Installing Java 1.7 B136 On 9.10 64bit?

I run a Minecraft server and it uses Java on a VPS that has Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala amd64. I have Java 1.6 running with no problems, however many people say Java 1.7 makes a major performance increase (I have tested this on my Win 7 64x computer) which would help reduce lag that my players encounter. I downloaded the Linux x64 tar ball from [URL] how to install it (no deb or auto-installer).

Even though I have nspluginwrapper installed (as Flash is working fine), Java does not want to work in Firefox. What do I need to do so that the 32-bit Java plugin will work in Firefox?

Fedora X86/64bit :: Java JRE Plugin On Firefox For 14?

Feb 13, 2011

how to run a java application on a 64 bit Firefox install on Fedora, but I didn't find any simple and direct way to do it. So I'll post this here, hoping that people who search for this problem can easily find this really quick solution.

1-> on the terminal do the usual su -
2-> yum install jre
3.> make a link in /home/your_name/.mozilla/plugins/ folder to the file located at /usr/java/jre1.6.0_23/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
(just select the file, press ctrl+shift and drag it to the plugins folder)
4-> go to http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp from firefox and test your install

Piece of cake, but it doesn't show up in search engines that easily when I look for: jre firefox 64 plugin fedora Granted that many tutorials mention the linking method, but most either tell you to install the binary/rpm from the java site or even installing the 32bit version for older fedoras... yum makes it so much easier.

Ubuntu :: RAM-consuming Instances Not Shown In System Monitor?

Jul 9, 2011

I have 3.5GB of usable RAM as reported by System Monitor. Now after a couple of hours, System Monitor shows that around 52% of my RAM is being consumed. Switching to Processes (I have All Processes selected), I see firefox-bin consuming around 200-250MB of RAM while Xorg consumes around 100-140MB. The rest adds up to another 200MB consumed.

So it doesn't add up. Yeah, I can grab another RAM block and be done with it (giving a projected total usable RAM of 7.0GB, I have another slot). I just want to know where the rest of the consumed RAM is.

There are some scripts that you can see as "php /var/www/html/call_engine.php ..." that are consuming CPU more than I expect and I will correct, but I would like to know about the other processes like many crond or the "/usr/sbin/sendmail -FCronDaemon -i -odi -oem -oi -t". Server :: Squid Excessive Memory Consuming On Fedora 12?

Feb 7, 2011

There is squid 3.1.8 on a Fedora 12 server with 2 GB of RAM. It is used for sharing the Internet for approximatively 80 PC's. The problem is that it is really a memory hog, when enabling delay pools. I am using the following configuration for the memory pools:

Code:

delay_pools 1
delay_class 1 2
delay_access 1 allow drumuri

[code]....

There are moments when the squid process uses approximatively all the RAM and goes into swapping. After that I restart it, it goes well for a while and again eats up all the memory. On the Internet it says that Squid uses a lot of memory, but should it use 2 GB of memory, even if all 80 people are online at the same time?

Fedora :: /dev/shm - 224 Mbyte Ramdisk That Is Consuming 224 Mbytes Of System Memory Whether Or Not Use It

There's an entry in /etc/fstab which mounts this automatically. If I interpret that correctly, that's a 224 mbyte ramdisk that is consuming 224 mbytes of system memory whether or not I use it. Is that correct? If so, will anything break if I unmount it and delete it from /etc/fstab? Do programs typically depend on it? I'd like to reclaim the system memory (low DRAM machine) for other uses.

Ubuntu Networking :: D-link DWA-552 Master Mode On 10.04 - File Transfers Or Bandwidth Consuming Processes

May 20, 2010

after successfully configuring the dwa-552 to work in master mode in ubuntu 10.04 (ath9k driver) I ran some file transfer tests. The download speed is very good (~50mbps) but the upload speed spikes at about 10-20mbps for the first few KB and then it's nonexistent (0-1kbps). This only affects file transfers or otherwise bandwidth consuming processes. Normal web browsing or ssh is not affected. After running a speedtest of my internet connection which is routed through the AP I could upload to the internet with 1mbps which is my inet connection maximum so apparently this is not affected. Tried the same file transfers with netcat to eliminate any other factors and had the same problem. dmesg and hostapd debug did not report anything unusual

Ubuntu :: Using Resources Of Other Pc Across Network

Dec 20, 2010

I got a fairly powerful media system standing in the living room. Most of the time it is idle, maybe playing some music. At the same time I got a pc in my office that is less resourceful. Sometimes I'll run programs through ssh with the -XC command. This way a program will seemingly run on my office pc, while it is actually running on the media system. However:

- 1 Sound doesn't transfer to the office pc.

- 2 When using a program I need to constantly be aware where I save my files. Sometimes it is located on the remote computer, sometimes it isn't.

Is there an alternative way to use the resources on the media system? E.g. run a program that is stored on the office pc and process it on the media system?

Both systems run Ubuntu (office 10.04 - media system 10.10).

Ubuntu :: Stardict Using All (cpu) Resources?

Dec 31, 2010

I just recently upgraded to 10.04 (LTS), and I have been using stardict app for a long time with nothing but success on each of my laptops anc omputers I have had over the past 5 or so years. However, now on one laptop after starting the stardict app, using panel the applet I create on my xfce4-panel (as per normal), and looking up a word (highlight and press shift key which i use for quick word search using stardict), the app begins using 100% cpu resources and I am forced to kill the process.

The problem is intermittent, meaning it only occurs half of the time I am using startdict, while the other half of the time it operates normally. I have been trying to see if there is some sort of pattern, perhaps other apps running at the time the problem occurs, but I have not noticed anything that looks suspect, since I generally fire up stardict after boot in and have had it happen (the problem) without even any other apps open (just testing to try and find some sort of pattern to locate the potential issue).

I use a standard set of dictionary files for each of my comps, and currently have stardict operating fine on 2 other laptops, both running 10.04, with the same set-up (xubu, same apps, and settings pretty much) and no indications of this problem on either (other) laptop.
