Ubuntu :: Installed KDE - Unity Got Corrupted

after I installed KDE on my Ubuntu installationv I suspect Unity UI got corrupted...I can run KDE fine but there's no 'desktop' when I log into Unity...Similarly no panels or 'desktop' in 'Classic Ubuntu' session also though I can run applications using 'Gnome Do'... I have Ubuntu 11.04 DVD...Can I repair or install Gnome using this DVD? I can't get online because Android Wifi/USB tethering's not working in Ubuntu (though works fine in Windows 7)...

I've just installed the brand new Ubuntu 11.04 and all goes well until...I log in a session. There is a window telling me that my graphic card isn't too good to run Unity, when I have no problem under 10.10 to run all the eye-candy. Now I have a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 120M with 512 megs of memory. I've install the NVIDIA current driver in the Additional Drivers application and reboot. But nothing...in the additional driver app it says that the current driver is installed but not currently in use...what should I do before giving up and install unity-2d?

I installed ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop and everything worked just fine. When I helped a friend to install it on his laptop unity did not work, only ubuntu classic. On the login screen I choose "ubuntu" and when I log in I get "ubuntu classic" I went back to the login screen and chose "ubuntu classic" and it did the same thing so my question is:
where did unity go?
has anyone else had this issue, I have installed the recommended nvidia drivers and I still don't see unity, I don't know what to do next!

I originally had the nvidia driver form the nvidia website installed instead of the = one from the repository. I uninstalled it and used apt-get to install nvidia-current. My video works fine but when ever I click the applications button all of my installed software is gone under all applications. I can still access my programs it's just under all applications nothing shows up, this is annoying. Is their any way to fix it or should I just switch back the driver?

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 in a virtual box but it has defaulted to Gnome rather than Unity. I've never used Linux before (had to get it for my software paper at uni) so really have no idea what I'm doing. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I installed ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386.iso hoping I would get the Unity User Interface, but to my dissapointment I got the regular one.
I checked the user settings and 'Netbook Edition' is selected as my default view.
What can I do to get the Unity Interface?

I'm COMPLETELY new to linux. I"m running Ubuntu 9.10 and TRYING to install Devede. I have tried the Terminal, Synaptic Manger, and the Add/Remove and still keep getting this same error. I'm running a regular 32 bit Pentium 3 process to test if I like Linux or not. this is what it says: E: /var/cache/apt/archives/libavcodec-extra-52_4%3a0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu3_i386.deb: corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archive this is not a DUAL boot computer either.

1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

I don't usually post scary post titles, but i'm a little desperate. I apologise for the bad grammar and flow of this message, i'm blaming it on this tiny netbook.Summary: Linux crashed, corrupting only the NTFS partition, the mft isn't recoverable with CHKDSK and tesgetdataback on windows sees the partition with all of it's files.Question: If getdataback can see all the files it must be able to see the mft. Is there a way to rebuild the mft?Long winded version:So I was running 9.10 64bit and was accessing a NTFS partition made by Vista.I was extracting a 7z. archive when the computer became unresponsive. Ctrl Alt Backspace didn't work, alt ctrl f1 worked but i couldn't login so couldn't halt the system. I waited 5 min and turned off the computer. 4 seconds on the power button.
When the computer restarted all the partitions were fine except the NTFS partition. 9.10 couldn't mount the partition, saying CHKDSK needed to be run. Booting into Vista, I get a black screen with a cursor flashing on the top left. Booting into recovery I ran CHKDSK /f /r c: which came back with something like "mft corrupt, couldn't recover aborted".I then got back into 9.10 and tried testdisk. When attempting to do anything with the partition, it crashed with MFTSegmentation fault. Getting desperate, I tried to dd the partition onto a nas but at 30 gb the computer got really slow so I aborted that. {I don't have a hdd large enough on the computer}.
I then unplugged the hdd and plugged it into another computer, using sata. Linux doesn't have any advanced recovery tools for ntfs so i used getdataback on vista. This sees all of the files but I can't find a way to recover the MFT.I haven't lost any files but wouldn't mind restoring the mft. Is there a way of doing thisRant:WTF. Ubuntu 9.10 comes with ntfs3g as default? It should be safe to use. Windows has crashed many times but hasn't taken down the mft.Reading more about this, an MFT getting corrupted should never really happen other than if the disk is physically defected.

Being an Ubuntu enthousiast (both professionally as well as at home), I upgraded my home server from 9.10 to 10.04 yesterday. It runs kvm with only 1 vm. Host and vm we're both ubuntu 9.10 64bit. I upgraded both to 10.04. So far so good. Also did reboots to load the new kernel image.
For data storage I have a large (6,35TB) XFS partition. This partition is exported to the vm as a block device (vdb). This morning I noticed the vm has crashed. The XFS partition (mounted as /home) was shut down. Is this just bad luck? Or is it 10.04?

I tried booting with an older (2.6.31) kernel, but didn't help. Can I safely run xfs_repair without causing any more damage?
All disks in this system are attached to an Areca hardware raid controller configured in Raid5 and has been operating for months now without any problem.

I was resizing my ext4 partition and I cancelled it while it was at the reading stage think it was only reading it and nothing else, but now it is corrupt.

I have a virtual ubuntu machine (wubi) under windows 7. Recently, I have been unable to boot ubuntu because the file /ubuntu/winboot/wubildr.mbr appears to be corrupted. Windows 7 boots fine. How can I repair my ubuntu without loosing my files or how can I retrieve my user files before I install ubuntu again?

I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 for a while now on my 500 gb external hard drive, and for the most part I've had little to no problems I couldn't fix with a little common sense. However, recently my computer was taking an unusually long time to boot up, so I restarted, which normally works just fine, but just as I restarted the system had begun to boot. Now when I boot I get the following:

I haven't tried an Ubuntu LiveCD, because I lost mine (making a new one is difficult with our current internet connection) and I feel I would get the same results. At the very least, I would like to be able to get all my music, videos, etc. off the drive, but I would prefer being able to fix it completely so as not to have to buy a new one.

I have all of my music in mp3 form on an external HD. When I copy it to my home folder for use in Banshee 2.0, some of the music files become corrupted.When these copied mp3s are played, they have annoying, intermittent distortion throughout some of the songs. In an effort to try and isolate the problem, played one of the distorted songs directly from the file on the external HD, and it played flawlessly. I then downloaded Clementine and had the exact same distortion on the playback from the copied file, and then no distortion from the external HD file.
So at this point, it seems like the mp3 are getting messed up when they are being copied from the external HD to the computer.I am using a USB 2.0 port for the file copying.

I was resizing my windows partition and accidently turned my computer off. When I went to run a disk check from gparted I get multiple filesystem errors. Chkdsk /r when run from a recovery cd says it can't determine the size of the partition so it can't continue. Is there anyway to get my files off the corrupted partition from within linux. Right now Gparted shows that it has been resized but that it is corrupted and i can't even attempt to mount it. There are only a few files I need to get off the partition but they are really important.

This is a USB shared drive, with an ext3 partition. The partition is located at /dev/sdb1. I use Samba to share /media/tiga1000/samba/public, and everyone on the network can add/delete files to it. Specifically, this is our media drive, and we upload a lot of pictures to it, since me and my sister are amateur photographers. Under /public/images/camera_pictures/2010, I have 3 directories. 01_january, 02_february, and 03_march. The directory that has been corrupted is 03_march, and when I say corrupted, I mean that I cannot open it. It acts as a unknown file type that can't be opened.

How I should go about recovering it. Somehow it lost it's directory switch. Should I unmount the drive and run fsck on it? I would like to be able to recover these images, if it is at least possible!

I'm trying to install a package (mythTV backend - but im sure the package is not at fault) and I keep getting this errorcorrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archiveNew build - ubuntu lucid 32bitI think it might be a hardware fault memory/hardrive/motherboard or somthing to do with an error in /home/ partition filesystem.To be honest im not sure and its driving me mentalWould consider anyones input on possible causes of a Corrupted filesystem. I have an Ubuntu 9.10 server installation which have been working flawlessly for some months. The server runs bridged networking, because of some VMs that runs on it. But, a couple of weeks ago the network connectivity have started to disappear now and then (usually once a day or so). Running "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" always kicks it back to life.
After a bit of debugging I noticed that when OK the routing table looked like this:

I got a 40GB seagate HDD which has got through some unsuccessful windows and linux installations and now all the partition tables are corrupted... I tried to format with System>Administration>DiskUtility but it gives this error when I'm do: Error creating partition table: helper exited with exit code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sdb: Input/output error gParted was not even useful since it didn't not even detected the drive...
Isn't there any simple way to format the crap from the Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD? I believe that on windows, there wouldn't be that problem since the "format c:" crap just format the drive without asking questions. All I want to do is to format the drive so I can create partitions later. Also, I have only access to the live CD and I don't have any Diskette drive installed.. I believe we now live in a world where this crap isn't needed to fix a computer.

I needed to use an SD card for something unusual today, but wanted to preserve all the photos on it. So I unmounted it and ran...
$ sudo dd if=/dev/mmcblk0 of=/home/kip/Desktop/Camera.bin bs=1MB
...to make a backup of the complete card, partitions included. I used the card for other purposes, umounted again, and then wrote back the image with...
$ sudo dd if=/home/kip/Desktop/Camera.bin of=/dev/mmcblk0 bs=1MB
I unmounted, removed the card, and then re-inserted to find most of the JPEGs corrupted. I can see some pixels, but they are all mangled.
I fear the blocksize (bs=1MB) may have been the culprit and should have been 512 (bytes) for a card containing a fat16 formatted partition.
