I have an old Pavilion N5425 that I was given. It only has 256 MB, so I am trying to run Xubuntu. I can run the Xubuntu Live CD, but when I try to install it, early in the install process, I get an error. It says that ubi-prepare has exited with exit code -9. What does this mean?

My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 64 bits on my new HP Pavilion dv6, but it seems to boot almost randomly. I think it might be an issue related to the ATI graphics card, but I don't know how to solve it.

I have been using Ubuntu for at least a couple of years, and this is the first time there is no way to complete an installation : The process halts after restarting the system. A few months ago I managed to install Ubuntu 9.10 on this laptop without any trouble, before disinstalling it. I have tried:
ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso both from a CD and an USB flash drive, always with the same frustrating result. I tried also to install 9.10 first and then upgrade to 10.4, but the upgrade didn't work either. Today I even tried Maverick Meerkat (maverick-desktop-i386.iso) from a USB flash drive, but it also halted during the process. However i've decided to kick the nasty habbit that is windows. I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto my HP Pavilion dv6-2020sa. Its a full install no partitions (i jumped straight into the deep end) However when i start her up, she gets to the loading screen of Ubuntu and the Welcome sound, blurts out of my speakers, but then repeats and repeats before stopping... the system then freezes, keyboard and mouse stop responding. Running from the Live CD works fine. I was reading through the forum and understand i need to get the boot info script, so here she is.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and everything went smooth. I was originally using Ubuntu 10.04 version installed via Wubu and decided it was time to make a true install of Ubuntu and decided to use 10.10.
I installed Skype and tried to have a phone convo, but the Microphone wasn't working. I tried to use yfrog.com to record a video from my webcam and the video worked fine, but no audio. I also tried the pre-installed sound recorder to record my voice but that also failed.
I completely deleted NTFS as having a boring windows doesn't make any sense today, installed it with ext4:
/boot = 200MB
/swap = 1GB
/ = space left
After successful install, the BIOS screen with HP logo remains stuck, it won't boot anything in another words. I can't get the boot loader, nothing as if it awkwardly trying to boot from external data drive. Did my hard drive go poof? or did I miss something during install? How can I get my hd to read?
I'm trying to install Ubuntu on my dv1000 but I can't seem to get past the Ubuntu loading logo. I'm using the same CD that I used when I installed onto my Dell Inspiron 600m and that installation went flawlessly. Right after the Ubuntu loading logo, my screen just goes black and sits there seemingly doing nothing. Does anyone know of compatibility issues with my laptop or is there a workaround to this black screen issue?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried to do a clean install of 10.04 on the above desktop. It was previously running 9.10 fine.
I booted with a 10.04 live CD, used Gparted to delete the previous partition that 9.10 was in. Installed 10.04 and chose the option to install in the largest continuous free disc space.
The installation seemed to go fine, but when I re-start the system, GRUB loads, I select Linux, then I get a flashing cursor and the monitor goes to sleep as it shows like it is getting no signal.
When I boot Vista on the same system it works fine.
From the sound of the hard drive, I am guessing that it is not loading the Ubuntu OS, I don't think this is a video driver problem.

Thing is, grub didn't install! I'm pretty sure a full install of ubuntu 10.10 in on a partition that I can't access. To complicate matters further, loading Vista necessitated a restart when it installed a "generic volume driver" by itself. Restarting vista doesn't show any difference (obviously since vista can't see linux formatted partitions).
Planning on turning an old PC i've acquired into a server. Not quite sure which debian to download for an HP Pavilion a309.uk, or where to find this information. None of the codes seem to match with any on the link underneath.

I have rather limited RAM resource, 192MB to be exact and i would have preferred to have installed Xubuntu from the start, but kept getting errors when using Wubi in Windows XP.

I am attempting to install Xubuntu via Wubi on an old HP e-Vectra PC. It only has 126mb of ram. Wubi installed successfully but when I get to the part where you finish the installation after you restart I get a black screen after the wubi 11.04 screen. I really don't want to upgrade the ram in this computer If I don't have to due to the difficulty of doing so. Is there any way I can get it to work?

It's up and running now and I got it to connect to the wireless internet, but I can't upgrade it. When I tried to do it through the upgrade manager, it just says "waiting" after I put in my password and hit the check mark for "apply upgrades". Idk I waited for like 2 & half hours. I first assumed it was downloading the stuff, but it shouldn't have taken that long? Then I logged out and logged back in and tried to do it through the terminal, but that didn't work either.

It attempts to install for about 20 minutes and then freezes up. I am never prompted for any other choices during the installation. I'm trying to install the Xubuntu 10.04 i386 Alternative build on a Pentium 2 Compaq PC with a SCSI hard drive. I run the installer but when loading it chokes up trying to read/write the SCSI harddrive and fails to install.
Do I need SCSI drivers or are they included and my disk corrupted? Windoze 98 and NT4 work fine on this PC.

WinXP service pack 3 and all updates are current, with one glitch, system will not 'restart' have to press off button, then have to press off button twice again to start XP running again. Tried to run off CD using xubuntu, Lubuntu 11.04 and Unbuntu 11.04. A page of errors covers the screen, I have a photo attached which I hope you can download and zoom in on.
