Ubuntu Installation :: Using Packages Of 32 Bit System On 64 Will It Work
Feb 27, 2011
I am having some confusion. For development work I needed following packages
Quote:
bcc bin86 gawk bridge-utils iproute libcurl3 libcurl4-openssl-dev bzip2 module-init-tools transfig tgif texinfo texlive-latex-base texlive-latex-recommended texlive-fonts-extra texlive-fonts-recommended pciutils-dev mercurial build-essential make gcc libc6-dev zlib1g-dev python python-dev python-twisted libncurses5-dev patch libvncserver-dev libsdl-dev libjpeg62-dev iasl libbz2-dev e2fslibs-dev git-core uuid-dev ocaml libx11-dev bison flex
I until now was using them on a 32 bit system.Ubuntu 10.04. Here I am switching the computer to 64 bit and want to build same environment how ever my confusion is above packages are approximately 430 Mb and are present in /var/cache/apt/archives on my 32 bit system. Can I transfer those to my 64 bit system and use or there is a difference in packages for 32 bit and 64 bit and I should be using a fresh install on the 64 bit system.

I have been following (200 instructions on how to do a clean install without losing settings.I used the command<sudo dpkg --get-selections > /home/user/package.selections>to create a list of installed applications. My problem is that the instructions to reinstall those packages does not work. The code given is<sudo dpkg --set-selections /home/package. selections && apt-get dselect-upgrade>.However when I try and run this code I am told that "--set-selections takes no arguments".So I need some revised code to reset the list of applications for re-installation

Is there a way using dpkg or apt-get to segregate user application packages from system packages? What I envision is an /apps directory structure that can be the install target for selected packages so not to "clutter" the storage areas for the system administration files/packages - maybe even with permissions set so that (a GROUP of) users could install packages on an Ubuntu server w/o SysAdmin guidance. This could also allow 1)system upgrades with or w/o including these packages, and 2)the sharing of /apps (via NFS) among common Ubuntu systems. Is this doable using the dpkg or apt maintenance tools?

Whenever I do sudo apt-get or use the Ubuntu Software Center, I can't download anything because a message comes up saying "Action requires installation of untrusted packages: The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." I've been trying to download GIMP and Thunderbird, so... I dunno what the problem is.

I installed Karmic to a new hard drive using debootstrap, after running debootstrap I run chroot and install a linux imagage, usplash and some other packages (xorg among them). When booting from this disk, usplash shows the loading screen, but it never appears when shutting down, does anybody have an idea why this happen? Do you know how usplash is executed on shut down? Any other alternative to show an image when the system is shutting down

I recently upgraded from F13 to F14 using "preupgrade". This is the first time I've used preupgrade. So far, F14 is running OK. There are some leftovers from F13 and I'm wondering if this is correct.
Q1: There are 176 F13 packages remaining. [alfrugal@localhost Documents]$ rpm -qa | grep fc13 | wc -l 176 Is this OK? FWIW, after the upgrade, I ran "package-cleanup --orphans" as recommended by the "preupgrade" page on the Fedora Project wiki.
Q2: Also, my GRUB menu was correctly updated for F14, but it still contains the three entries it had for F13. Is it normal for the preupgrade process to require the user to clean up the obsolete entries from the GRUB menu?

I am thinking about upgrading to 64bit Ubuntu 10.10 because I have heard it's good for gaming and makes things run smoother. Also, I know it's the new thing and I'm going to have to switch eventually. Point is I don't want to loose my data with the clean install and I was wondering if I backup my current system, which is 32bit (assuming there is a backup utility, I thought I saw one) will I be able to load that on my new 64bit install?

I've made a Debian installer CD using a netinst image some time ago and tried to install it my self, but I couldn't get the X system to work, and I wasn't sure If i made the correct actions at partitioning the drives etc
My primary OS is Vista, but I want to dual boot with Debian. I have two large drives, C: and D:. D: now is not visible from Vista as Debian is installed in it and it's the drive that I want to install debian in it. I was using grub to select OS, but when I decided to ask for your help, I wanted to format the D: drive. While trying to find a way to format it (it wasn't accessible by windows), I deleted the partition so grub was giving a 22 error and I couldn't boot my system. Finally, I've fixed that and now I want help to format D: (if necessary) and then install Debian with a Graphical User Interface in D:, but keep Vista in C: also. I have the Debian Installer CD, but I don't want to proceed alone, as I don't understand everything at the partitioning state, and I don't want to do something wrong and mess C: (or the entire machine).

when i tried to update Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04, somehow the installation stopped. Thinking that the installation was completed i restarted my desktop, only to find out that i have over 600 broken packages. Fixing the packages don't seem to work because he is unable to correct the dependencies. My guess is that i now have half Ubuntu 10.10 and half Ubuntu 11.04

I did the UPGRADE from Karmic Koala to Lucid, and everything was going well. But now I've been having problems with the UBUNTU UPDATE tool for the last 2 weeks. Every time I try to do an update check on the packages, I get the following message:Failed to fetch http:[url]....Release Unable to find expected entry deb-src/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.I've tried changing the servers to MAIN and others, and still no way to solve it. I've also checked for other posts, but haven't found a solution yet. Here's my SOURCES LIST (gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list)# See http:[url].... for how to upgrade to # newer versions of the distribution.

I know this type of upgrade question is asked regularly so I apologise in advance if its annoying.
Im currently running 12.2, and Im wondering when 13.1 may be available? have there been many problems with 13.0? I've been working quite alot so havent been checking in that often lately.
also, would my old .tgz packages work with 13.1, or would I need to rebuild them as .txz?

I've been trying to fix this problem for quite a few days now and have done a lot of searching on these forums, Linux Mint Forums and some others Google lead me to and have has some success, but am now stuck.I have posted a thread on this same topic on the Linux Mint Forums, but have had no success (if you want check it out at:URL...Originally I received error messages when trying to update involving certain repositories which couldn't be accessed (because they either didn't exist or had been moved) and I hunted these down and changed or removed them.
I have done much searching, etc. and cannot find any broken packages. I have tried many many different commands which have mostly done nothing.I seem to be in a similar boat to this person: URL...

For example, if I choose to install Fedora 11, then never upgrade to Fedora 12,13, etc. Will newer packages work on the old Fedora 11, or will I have to constantly upgrade to be able to use newer RPM packages?

I'm currently running 9.10 and am anticipating upgrading to 10.04 when it is released next week. I am however, running several packages from PPA's that were simply not working well at the versions included with 9.10 (I know specifically the 64-bit version of Flash and Wine are setup this way).
Since these installs are out of the scope of the official Ubuntu sources, how are these handled when I upgrade? More importantly, since some of these packages were just installed as a temporary fix until 10.04 came out, for some of them I'd like to remove the PPA version and reinstall the default version (since for several of them the 10.04 version has caught up to where it needs to be). Is there any way to identify all packages installed from PPA's on the system?

If I use testing with the backports.org repository, will "apt-listbugs" work on any package I try to install from backports?
I'm not expecting to use backports a lot, but there may be a case where I need a newer version of a program, from unstable.

I have created my first linux server using Ubuntu 10.04 server edition. My only experience with linux has been the desktop edition.
The initial trouble I'm having is that this server is on an isolated network without Internet access. I'd like to use a Gnome desktop like I'm used to in order to get up to speed quickly.
How do I get additional packages for a system that is not on the Internet? The end goal for this machine is a simple file depository for a W98 network using Samba shares. To boot from an IDE drive and share a 5 drive software RAID5 for data storage.

Every time I install ubuntu I have to reinstall all the software from the software center and so. Now I already installed all software I need for this moment. Is there a way to take source files of those (installed) packages and save them some where else in order to reinstall them if i needed next time without need to INTERNET connection ???
Another question I wanna know about: How can I take a backup of my system as whole in order to get back to it if some problem happened. I used to use Acronis True Image and its alternatives to make a disk image. Is there is some thing similar in linux ?? is there better options ??

So, as per Arch Linux's wiki, I tried to make some optimisations to the intel driver through setting it up in Xorg.conf (or as advised by that wiki article, in '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf' ), but I've ran into trouble enabling DRI3. Here's my current config file:
Code: Select allSection "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "SNA"
Option "DRI" "3"
Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection
So far everything works fine, I haven't seen any noticeable tearing, nor did I had any problems with any graphics-intensive programs I run, but there's a slight problem with the DRI3 part as indicated by Xorg's logs:
Code: Select all[ 26.556] (II) Loading sub module "dri2"
[ 26.556] (II) LoadModule: "dri2"
[ 26.556] (II) Module "dri2" already built-in
[ 26.556] (==) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp
[ 26.616] (II) intel(0): SNA initialized with Haswell (gen7.5, gt2) backend
[ 26.616] (==) intel(0): Backing store enabled
[Code] ....
First of all it still mentions the DRI2 driver, is this supposed to happen, or did something go wrong? Also it complains that it cannot find a file, which I can't figure out which package it belongs to, and taking a quick search around the interwebs hasn't produced anything useful...
The IGP is the CPU, which is actually a i5-4460... which according to Wikipedia it has a HD Graphics 4600 GPU.
