Ubuntu Installation :: Use Spare Partition To Install New Versions?
Dec 27, 2010
I would like to know if I can use spare partition to install new versions of Ubuntu ("use" as the CD drive, or USB stick; not as the destination of the installation).I have Ubuntu on my computer, and unused partitions on the hard disk. I would like to upgrade to ubuntu, but without needing to burn another cd or an (sufficiently) empty usb stick to do it.
I imagine that this is possible, as the partitions may be booted from, and the contents of the iso image are understandable by the installed Ubuntu. But I don't know how to do it - put the iso contents on a partition and boot from it to install a new Ubuntu.

It seems to work fine, but every now and then it will freeze, display a ubuntu logo on a purple background the logo is all dis assembled] then it goes to a black screen [does not display a source] and then every second flashes to a black screen with white lines extending from the top of the screen to the middle. my specs are 2.00ghz processor pentium 4, 495 mb of ram and it is a dell desktop

I copied my system disk to a spare disk. Both disks are listed in my BIOS "hard disk boot priority list".How do I install grub on the spare disk in order to boot from it when my system disk is no longer present or when I set my spare disk on top of the priority list ?

I'd like to set my comp up to dual boot with lucid and the maverick alpha. Currently I have lucid with a separate home partition. Is it possible to have both instances of ubuntu using the same home partition? or will this corrupt it in some way?

I'm doing a fully automated install of Etch, installing the standard system task. I'm using PXE boot with a preseed file.
I do this a lot, and I've not had problems before. This morning, it's stuck at 5% on "Select and install software" saying "Please wait...". The log on console #4 says:
WARNING: untrusted versions of the following packages will be installed!
[snip]
Do you want to ignore this warning and proceed anyway?
I installed a system yesterday without any problems, so I wonder if there's a recent problem with the mirrors I'm using. My /target/etc/apt/sources.list contains:
deb [url]
deb [url]
So it looks like either the UK mirror or security.debian.org.

I have a dell with win7 installed on two disks as raid0. I added a 3rd HD and installed 11.04 on to it. This boots ok but only Linux shows in the grub menu. Win7 is not there and I have no way to boot it as the installer put grub on disk0 of the raid overwriting the windows boot prog.

In particular, this is with regards to freevo, but it applies to anything that can be obtained through apt-get.
How do i remove it, and re-install it, and start again from scratch? Time and again i do "apt-get delete blah", then "apt-get install blah", only to find it's exactly the same as it was in the first place, and still broken.
Why does this happen? How can i make sure everything is COMPLETELY GONE. I don't care about lost data, i don't care about lost config files, or anything. There is just one aim here - i want it to work again.

I'm convinced that mdadm is going to be the death of me. I've wasted numerous hours on this so far without luck.
OpenSuse 11.4 on an old Supermicro box, creating a software RAID1 array across 2 x IDE 500GB disks. Creating /dev/md0 as a 250MB partition across /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdd1 for /boot, another 465GB partition across /dev/sda2 and /dev/sdd2 as an LVM partition to hold volumes for the various other OS filesystems. After the initial installation and configuration there were a series of mishaps with faulty IDE cables that had drives failing to show up at boot. Somehow, /dev/sdd2 got configured to array /dev/md1 as a spare drive. And nothing I've done so far gets it to show up as an active drive.
The obvious step of failing the partition, removing it, then adding (or re-adding) will bring it back as a spare. I've tried roughly a dozen different permutations of those same steps. The latest was to 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdd2' to clear the partition. Thought this might be the trick - after the zero, mdadm -E /dev/sdd2 reported 'no superblock' and no md1 configuration.
So 'mdadm --add /dev/md1 /dev/sdd2' and it still comes back as a spare. Here is mdadm -D /dev/md1
/dev/md1:
Version : 1.0
Creation Time : Sat Jul 9 10:26:01 2011
Raid Level : raid1
Array Size : 488119160 (465.51 GiB 499.83 GB)
code....
I can't stop this array, the OS is running from there. I can't easily boot from CD to repair, all IDE ports have disks attached.
Does anyone have an incantation to promote a spare to active?

I have an old Gateway MA3 laptop that has a driver error. This causes the screen to go black on startup and so I need to use a Live CD to fix it. But every time I boot from a live CD it goes to that screen where it says Ubuntu and has the dots under it, after about 5 to 10 minutes the dots stop and it does not do anything from this point. I have left it for up to an hour before.
I also tried to boot it using nomodoset because that is part of the fix. This didn't work either.

I'm not to clear on the difference between LTS versions and other versions, but think I may want to go with LTS. Can someone tell me if my thinking is correct given the following situation: I have some very cool, but very expensive software installed with a group license from my school, a school which I am not going to be attending for too much longer. So I want to go as long as possible without reinstalling Ubuntu, because once the product is licensed it will be licensed until I reinstall Ubuntu (or I uninstall the program). So I think this is going to require me keep the Ubuntu version I install as long as possible.
So in this case, should I go with 10.04LTS or should I just install Natty Narwhal and keep that as long as possible? It looks like 10.04LTS will be "supported" longer, but I'm not exactly clear on all that "supported" entails. Presumable it means security and software updates will be available for 10.04LTS for much longer than 11.x versions? So I'm thinking I should go with 10.04LTS
Is my thinking correct in going with 10.04LTS? Edit: It was pointed out that this would be against my contractual agreements. Which I suppose is probably true.

installed the latest version of R ( R.2.11.1) in my machine and I can run that by simply typing "R" in terminal but I need to install the old version of R ( R.2.9.2) since some packages don't support the new version. I have the .tar.gz file of old version. How can I install that? How do I run in terminal ?

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have
Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)
I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.

Well, I was just doing an update, and there was an update for git that was held back. I decided to force this update using 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade', and installation of git then failed. At this point in Synaptic - I could see versions listed as 'lucid', 'lucid-security', and then this ppa version. Then I barely managed to remove git - but now, if I try to install it again, *only* the ppa version is listed in Synaptic - no more 'lucid' and 'lucid-security' versions!!! Does anyone have an idea how I could recover the 'lucid', 'lucid-security' versions? I will try to salvage as much of the terminal with the problems as I can below...
Code:
/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/preinst: 12: dpkg-maintscript-helper: not found
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/git_1%3a1.7.4.1-3~ppa1~lucid2_i386.deb (--unpack):

My main computers are still on 8.04 and 8.10 versions, and it's certainly time to upgrade with a new LTS version 10.04. So, what's the best way to upgrade? I certainly want to maintain my current setup and data for apps like my email (I use sylpheed) and Firefox.
Should I just use Update Manager? It is currently offering me 9.04, for example, does that mean I will need to upgrade through each version a step at a time, or can I jump some versions?

i wanna install older versions of fedora(10 or 11), and after looking everywhere, i found that if you search the available mirrors through the download page. This allows you to select mirrors with the version you want. I didnt know if that was the way to get older versions or if there is another way.

For my work it is extremely useful to have multiple versions of gcc available. I've done this in the past under Ubuntu simply by enabling alternative or older repositories but in Fedora land I've not been able to find a standard automated way of doing this. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

1. I have dual booted Suse and Win Xp in past. Can idea be applied to different versions of Suse? I have a working Suse11.2 , and I have a spare partition (15GB) which can be re-formated.
2. Can i do a clean new install to the spare partition? Thus ending with two working Suse versions? ( Separate /home partitions). This would allow a) reserve of a working system while checking that 11.3 works. Then remove 11.2 later , and how to do that.

I need to build HDF library from sources. This library requires libjpeg-6b and won't compile with newer libjpeg-8 which already available.
Well, I download and install libjpeg-6b, but can't understand how to force use this library instead system default.
P.S.: I try to find any SlackBuilds for HDF4, but found them only for HDF5.

I upgraded my Ubuntu server install to 11.04 and could not connect to anything outside of it. Its a weird issue because if I run a ping against it as its booting up for about 20 seconds or so I get responses, then it says unreachable. (This is a wired connection by the way). If i login fast enough on the server itself I can ping google for instance and get a response, then it just stops and says host unreachable from that point on.
I then decided to setup a fresh install on the system (virtual server) and I get the same issue. All throughout the install it connected fine, just up until it fully restarts. Its like some service starts that just kills the connection. I rolled back to 10.10 on my other instance and it can connect fine.. Ive been trying everything I can find on the forums but I am pretty stumped by this,

both have the same update state
both have the same settings in software packet sources[code]....
Still the synaptic has different version of clamav in it, one has 0.96.4 and the other has 0.96.5.Even one other installation of 10.04 has the 0.96.5 in the repository. Why can one installation show different version then the other?
