Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Apache/SSL/Mysql/PHP And Mimic Existing Packages?

Aug 6, 2011

The Payment Card Institute (PCI) is requiring our site to upgrade to the latest versions of Apache, Mysql, OpenSSL, and PHP to fix known bugs that can compromise securityI can build all these from source, but when I do "make install" they don't mimic at all what is installed (directory format, files, etc) when I do apt-get install (of whatever old versions are in the dist). How can I find out how the packages are build via configure/make so that I can replicate the files, directory structure, etc, just with the current versions.

Slackware :: Unable To Upgrade Existing Packages Or Install New Ones?

Mar 23, 2011

I have a brand new Slackware 13.1 x64 installation, and I'm having problems with slapt-get.

I'm unable to upgrade existing packages or install new ones. The output in terminal is:

Code:
bash-4.1# slapt-get -i tar
Reading Package Lists... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
tar

[Code]....

Worth mentioning also, I managed to install Gnome from [URL] without any problems immediately prior to this error message starting to appear.

I've been using Debian and Ubuntu derivatives for the last couple of years, so I'm comfortable using the terminal and possibly doing some more advanced stuff.

I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.

If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager

The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 10.04 Hangs When Finding Existing Kernels?

The title's not especially clear, so I'll post a screenshot of what's happening. The upgrade keeps finding instances of the same kernel; the list in the terminal is constantly scrolling down, finding 'new' instances.

It's been doing this for about half an hour now. BTW, upgrading from 64bit 9.10 to 64bit 10.04.

Or will the upgrade execute, and leave everything looking and working exactly the same?

Fedora Installation :: F12 (Install Or Upgrade Existing System) Sony Vaio

Jun 22, 2010

I've had such good luck with Fedora (and this Forum), I'm attempting to put F12 on wife's brand new Sony Vaio, a VPCEB11FM, a 64bit system. I downloaded the Fedora-12-x86_64-netinst.iso, made sure it was ok with sha256.exe, then burned the image to DVD. Booted it up and let it default to "install or upgrade an existing system". It dead-ended in a dark blue or black screen. I re-started and examined the other options. Thought I'd try the one that says: "Install system with basic video driver". Got all the way through to where it got ready to start downloading files. Can't get past that point because it attempts to get to the Internet using the Sony's wireless card! Why would it try the wireless when there's a wired NIC card in this PC that requires no special driver etc. How to proceed from here?

Fedora Installation :: Huge Upgrade - Maintain Existing Partitions / Settings?

Aug 30, 2010

I've been running Fedora Core 3 on a P4 450 as a personal Samba server and domain controller. It's worked so well that I never gave any thought to upgrading. The other night, I noticed that Up To Date wasn't working, and that Firefox was acting strangely. I made the FC 13 installation disks, whereupon I found out that the system didn't have enough memory.

Rather than mess with the P3 450 any more, instead I swapped main boards and decided to do an upgrade. it even possible to do an "upgrade" from 3 to 13? Is it possible to maintain my existing partitions/settings. I've backed up everything that I'd be too unhappy to lose. It's a two drive system and the second is nothing but data, none of it catastrophic to lose, but at least disappointing. I'd like to keep the data and settings on the primary disk, but won't cry if I can't.

OpenSUSE Install :: Safest Way To Upgrade Using New Installation While Keeping Existing Home?

May 23, 2011

Having read several threads and received excellent previous advice there are just a couple of points I want to check please before proceeding on laptop. I want to upgrade to 11.4 from 11.2. My disk setup is as follows:-

Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 15505 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x462d462c

[Code]..

If I select existing /home root and swap partitions, format root but prevent formatting of /home and use a different user ID I believe that will leave my existing data intact and will allow me to trial new os. Is this correct approach? If all goes well and when I have new system working correctly, what is best way make old user id date accessible. Can I simply create my old id on new system and will that allow me to access data when I log on with that id?

Second question; at present I have the ability to boot to openSUSE, OS/2 and windoze. (It used to be done entirely by Boot Manager but during my last Linux installation I messed this up a bit so now machine boots to grub and this offers all three operating systems but chain loads Boot Manager if I select OS/2)

When I do the new installation what should I select to retain this setup so that I still have access to windoze and OS/2 but when selecting linux have new 11.4 system run.

Programming :: Redesign Existing Mysql Db In Php?

Apr 13, 2011

i inherited 200 tables in a mysql db from each of the 200 table there are table created on php pages

the information is organized pretty much the same (fields) in each of them, so i dont see the point of having so many different tables

i wanna redesign the db, in 4 tables each of this 200 table have a few essential characteristics, like: table name is (version_country_type), ie: v8_de_pro, v8_de_std, v9_uk_pro the fields are: No, Document_file, Document_path, ISBN, Book_Name, Subtitle, Status, Year_issue, Author

i will need to break the table name, and put each part in the new redesigned 4 tables separate fields...
ill have something like:

id, version, country, type, Document_file, Document_path, ISBN, Book_Name, Subtitle, Status, Year_issue, Author

but i have no idea how to do it i know i cant do it in mysql... so ill need to build up a php script which will need to read every table, and drop it in the new format:

table1 called Main: ID, version
table2 called Cat: ID, IDmain, Country
table3 called Sub: ID, IDmain, IDcat, type
table4 called files: ID, IDmain, IDcat, IDsub, Document_file, Document_path, ISBN, Book_Name, Subtitle, Status, Year_issue, Author

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Upgrade - MySQL 5.1 Does Not Want To Start Or Stop

Apr 30, 2010

I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. 32 bit. The install had not finished as it barked at tripwire config. I have had to stop it and continue from command prompt. More or less the install went OK. After the install, mysql 5.1 does not want to start or stop. Commands
/etc/init.d/mysql stop ( or 'stop mysql' , or service mysql stop' )
/etc/init.d/mysql start

Do not finish - do not return to command prompt. No log messages insyslog or mysql logs. Say, I do 'service mysql start', the command does not return, I click Ctrl+C, then repeat the command. This displays :
'start: Job is already running: mysql'.
Of course mysql is not running. I've tried to remove and reinstall the packages. No result. There is 'stop mysql' command in one of install scripts that hangs.

Ubuntu Installation :: MySQL Failed After Upgrade To 9.10 Desktop In 64bit

I've just upgraded my 9.4 to 9.10 on my 64bit desktop PC. Shortly afterwards I noticed that MySQL had gone away. There was no mysqld running. I tried a restart to no effect. invoke-rc.d initscript mysql, action "start" failed
dpkg: error processing mysql-server-5.1 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent prevent configuration of mysql-server

And it goes on, but that's the essence of it. I subsequently tried a complete removal and re-install, to no avail.I notice that /var/log/messages contains:

Google have not yielded any results as yet. If I leave out this step and use configure, make and make install, v2.2.19 gets installed, but to a different directory and all the config will need to be reformatted as it seems it does not use the Ubuntu Apache config structure.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Upgrade Safe On Setup With Packages?

Apr 28, 2011

I want to upgrade to 11.04 but I'm extremely scared of breaking my installation. First of all, I have all that experimental Compiz bling installed, does it break anything with Natty's Compiz? It obviously won't work because Natty uses 0.9 while Maverick uses 0.8, but I don't want any dummy plugins or anything. Also, these plugins are way too cool to miss (I just installed them and now I can't live without the extra eye-candy). And what's with my awkward startup settings? I have a compiz --replace --loose-binding command in there and many disabled docks that, in KDE, all launch simultaneously (including Compiz, which renders everything unusable) and completely screw the desktop (I stopped caring about KDE now). Also, my setup feels like my computer's going to blow up any minute while upgrading because of too much dull packages, including gnome-shell which I don't use after all. My computer is, in terms of packages, a complete junkyard! So, is it safe to upgrade with this setup, if yes, tell me the recommended way to do this (CD, update manager?) or if not, how do I scrap that from my updates forever? By the way, will the upgrade also ruin KDE?
