Ubuntu Installation :: Install Headaches On Toshiba Satellite Pro L510?

Oct 29, 2010

Today I bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 and after much screwing around I have Ubuntu installed kinda. Installing Ubuntu is generally a breeze and I have three machines running 8.04 pretty much rock solid unless I fiddle with 'em, but; I download and boot from a 10.04 LTS cd and gets to the new purpley splash with a couple of icons down the bottom, then goes into endless full-screen terminal scrolling and the computer heats up. So I tried 8.04. Not much different. I try 10.10; same as 10.04 LTS. So I try the alternate installer rather than desktop but that crashes too. I finally find a website suggesting to run the alternate installer, hit F4 and choose 'failsafe graphics' (which wasn't there for me) and then F6 and select everything but 'Free Software Only'. Hey, worked and I get through the text based installer no problem, restart and I'm looking at a grub2 menu and can select Windows 7 or Ubuntu. Cool.

So I select Ubuntu but goes to a text based, command line Ubuntu. Hasn't loaded a desktop. I try to 'sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop' from the CD but after much scrolling tells me not there. It is telling me I have umpteen updates I should get and asking me to insert the CD, which is fine as the machine is not online, but then can't find what it's looking for.

So I've gotten this far. My router is not set as a DHCP server; all machines have static IPs which is why this new one is not online. Would the simple answer be to plug it directly into the internet gateway router and do the updates from there, ubuntu-desktop included?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Upgrade - MySQL 5.1 Does Not Want To Start Or Stop

Apr 30, 2010

I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. 32 bit. The install had not finished as it barked at tripwire config. I have had to stop it and continue from command prompt. More or less the install went OK. After the install, mysql 5.1 does not want to start or stop. Commands
/etc/init.d/mysql stop ( or 'stop mysql' , or service mysql stop' )
/etc/init.d/mysql start

Do not finish - do not return to command prompt. No log messages insyslog or mysql logs. Say, I do 'service mysql start', the command does not return, I click Ctrl+C, then repeat the command. This displays :
'start: Job is already running: mysql'.
Of course mysql is not running. I've tried to remove and reinstall the packages. No result. There is 'stop mysql' command in one of install scripts that hangs.

Ubuntu Installation :: MySQL Failed After Upgrade To 9.10 Desktop In 64bit

Apr 11, 2010

I've just upgraded my 9.4 to 9.10 on my 64bit desktop PC. Shortly afterwards I noticed that MySQL had gone away. There was no mysqld running. I tried a restart to no effect. So tried an un-install and re-install with the Package Manager. This failed! There was quite an extensive message in details, which started:-

invoke-rc.d initscript mysql, action "start" failed
dpkg: error processing mysql-server-5.1 (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
dpkg: dependency problems prevent prevent configuration of mysql-server

And it goes on, but that's the essence of it. I subsequently tried a complete removal and re-install, to no avail.I notice that /var/log/messages contains:

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid Upgrade Hangs When Upgrading MySQL Server

May 2, 2010

When this happens you have to open a terminal, get the process id for mysql-server-5 then kill that process. Like this:
Code:
ps -A
then from the list of processes that it spits out look at the process id (the number at the beginning of the line) for mysql-server-5.

Now type
Code:
sudo kill -9 XXXXX
where XXXXX is the process id for mysql-server, and enter your password. The upgrade process should now resume.

Ubuntu :: Browser Headaches To The Max?

Nov 10, 2010

i have two systems here. ubuntu 10.04 work laptop and ubuntu 10.10 desktop at home.on the desktop at home: i have unusually slowness with firefox. it's as if i'm on 28k. but the thing is, my ping speeds and chromium speeds are wicked fast. if i click out of my browser and open applications on my desktop, they are incredibly fast. all of this suggests my connection is good and my system is not overloaded. firefox on 10.10 so far has just been a huge fail. even with the latest ppa, it's unusually slow. i can literally sit there for 2 to 2.5 minutes until videos finally loads with my favorites listed below. chromium does not exhibit this.

on my laptop: while firefox and chromium both work on my laptop, i cannot log into my web site via wp-admin on chromium. it simply says the login.php link is down or temporarily unavailable. yet if i go to my desktop and use chromium, i log right in. or if i use firefox, i log right in. i cleared the entire cache and browsing history blah blah you name it, yet it still acts up. i'd really kind of like one browser that, oh.. i don't know? a browser that works? something to use on either computer? any input on what could be causing this or how to fix it?

Ubuntu Servers :: Sambe - Ntfs-3g Mount - Symlinks And Headaches?

Jul 8, 2010

Once more I'm trying to do something that is necessary, yet contrary to design. I used to have a proper server, but that gave up the ghost. So right now I make do with a laptop, into which I have plugged a USB harddisk. That used to be my backup of /home, but because I run XP on my workstation (which, sadly, I cannot avoid if I want to get paid at the end of the month, but mainly use to access my Linux server) that USB disk has an NTFS file system. Which is useful, given the fact that sometimes I have to take it with me and plug it into a Windoze box.

When my server passed on to that great server room in the sky, everything went with it, including the data volume. So what I did, this being an emergency, was to plug the USB disk into a spare laptop, install Karmic Server onto it, and edit /etc/fstab to mount the USB disk on /home, using the appropriate uid/gid to mount it under the ownership of my own user account.

Fine - so far so good. This gives me /home/share which is shared as a public samba mount, and /home/frankvw which is shared as a password-protected directory. It also gives me /home/www which is not shared, this being the Apache docroot. I have proper access to everything, and the people rejoice.

Now for the dirty business. To make life easier, I have a symlink 'www' in my home directory:~/www -> /home/wwwwhich works fine from the Linux command prompt (an "ls ~/www") lists the docroot, and "cd ~/www" gets me there) but of course Samba refuses to play ball here. From a Windows client I can see 'www' in my home dir but cannot access it. From a Linux workstation (Intrepid Workstation) in Nautilus I cannot even see 'www' in my homedir - apparently Nautilus is aware of the dirty deeds going on here and prudently hides it. What can I do (short of rearranging the file/directory structure on my USB disk which I'd rather not do) to work around this (otherwise very sensible) restriction?

I'm just getting utterly nothing in any log.

but there isn't! top/ps show nothing at all

root@linuxbox:/etc/mysql# sudo restart mysql (or stopping) just sit there, hung on something.

Ubuntu Networking :: Using Tether Or Ad-hoc Networks Causes Headaches With Other Networks?

Apr 16, 2011

I am trying to configure my android phone (rooted Eris running kaossfroyo 2.2) to be used as a midi controller. Which I am having enough trouble with as it is but it has raised an annoying issue that occurred a month ago when I used the phones tethering network with my laptop. After connecting the laptop to the phones network (either tether, or an Ad-hoc network created using the network manager) I am unable to switch to other networks. In other words when I'm done with the phone-laptop connection I cannot connect my laptop to my home network! When I click on the other network connection I can see that it is attempting to connect in the upper right corner of the desktop (the network icon) but it will not make the connection.

What happens is that the network indicator will make the little circle graphic as if it is trying to connect but it never will display the other circle as green indicating that it has connected. but when I disconnect from the home network that is not connecting I will get a message underneath that will say that ad-hoc network disconnected! If I am switching from the android tether it will say Android-Tether disconnected etc. Even though when I click on network manager it shows that I am attempting to connect to the home network (labeled LIBERTY in my case) upon disconnection it shows the ad-hoc or tether connection being disconnected.

I am absolutely baffled by this! The issue persists even after deleting the ad-hoc connection from the wireless settings tab!!! I would speculate that for some reason the laptop is attempting to connect to the previous ad-hoc connection despite me wanting it to connect to LIBERTY. I am very confused and hope someone can lead me in the right direction.

Ubuntu :: Determine Version And Upgrade Php/mysql With Plesk

Sep 24, 2010

I am trying to determine which version of Ubuntu we have installed on our Webfusion VPS in order to see how to update to specific php and mysql versions needed for installing some software.

uname -a gives this:

Linux [hostname] 2.6.18-028stab070.2 #1 SMP Tue Jul 6 14:34:09 MSD 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I don't see anything that matches up to any of the Ubuntu releases. Is there any other way to determine what we have?

We have Plesk 9.5.2 on the machine.

Certain software we need to install requires PHP 5.2.10+ and Mysql 5.2+ but we currently have PHP 5.2.4-2ubuntu5.12 with Suhosin-Patch 0.9.6.2 and Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.51a

how to get the required versions of php and mysql (without breaking Plesk)? I tried editing /etc/apt/sources.list to add a new repository and using apt-get upgrade php but I probably did not add the correct repository.

php-4.2.2-17.2
php-imap-4.2.2-17.2
php-ldap-4.2.2-17.2

I need to get these upgrades done due to PCI requirements so they are saying to upgrade to at least 4.0.25 I'm currently running RedHat9 so ideally need to know the easiest way to upgrade to a later 4.0 or 4.1 version.

Server :: Postfix Standalone To Mysql Upgrade?

Feb 16, 2011

I did a basic U9.10 server install of postfix with the minimal config. Added a test user and things worked after a few minutes. I now want to setup a few new things and want to switch to use mysql as the back-end. I have mysql installed, setup postfix.admin which in turn setup the database/tables. Now when I logged in to that admin, the original test user is not there (which is fine), but I created the test domain again, created a user and an outside test failed saying user unknown.

Now I looked through the main.cf page and don't see anything obvious to say hey, put backend is mysql, here is the info. I then noticed via apt that postfix-mysql was not installed, so installed that, I see my .cf was backed up, but still don't see anywhere to connect the 2. So currently mail is still accepted from the test1 user running local. I don't mind wiping everyhing, but is there a simple place to just make a change or 2?

Ubuntu Servers :: Can't Reinstall Mysql-server After Power Failure During Aptitude Safe-upgrade

Jun 2, 2010

A week or so ago I ran an aptitude safe-upgrade and while it was updating mysql I suffered a power-failure. Now, this never really happens in Holland but of course this once it happened at the worst possible time.

I've tried a lot of different things to get mysql working again, but am running into all kinds of problems. First mysql won't shut off properly (it does startup with the computer but I can't connect to it at all) during an aptitude purge.
