Ubuntu Installation :: Set Alternate Boot Path Or Disk?

How can one create an alternate disk or boot path on a ubuntu server? I have a new server running 9.10 and have a full backup of an old server which had all the configuration and installed softwares, etc. Instead of trying to reinstall everything and configure it the way it was, I was thinking of adding another disk to the server, mount it and then hopefully be able to boot it from there. I don't have any LVM or mirroring setup but was hoping if I can specify a secondary boot path when the server boots up, if it fails I should be able to go back to the current one.

is there a way to make a symlink that redirects to the directory rather than acting as an alternate path? In other word, what I have now is:

Today I decided to replace my 9.04 install with 10.04. (I did this on a separate hard disk.) As I am a big fan of LVM I used the 'Alternate' install CD. Everything installed fine.
However, upon booting I observed two things: firstly there was no grub menu. No countdown timer, no menu. Just a flickering cursor. After 15 seconds or so I got a message telling me that:

/dev/mapper/bromine-root (My root partition.) does not exist and that it had given up waiting. Finding this kind of strange I tried the alpha of 10.10 --- same again. Hence I have two questions: firstly, where did the nice grub menu go; secondly, what is wrong with LVM and grub these days? At the initframfs prompt I am thrown to there are some LVM utilities and they appear to show my volumes.
Switching back to my old pair of hard disks and everything works as expected (i.e, the hardware is fine and supported by Linux.)

I have a Windows XP system, and wanted to install Ubuntu to a 100 GB XT3 partition on the same drive. I was told I could chainload Ubuntu from the NT Loader menu. I booted from a Ubuntu 10.04 CD and ran the installer. It didn't find any hard drives. On a hunch, I tried the 10.04 alternate installer CD. That DID find the hard drive and partitions. I had the installer make /dev/sda7 (the XT3 partition) the root. Installation proceeded smoothly, but then the installer told me it did not see any other OS's on my drive! Why? I directed the installer to place grub on /dev/sda7 instead of the MBR.
Per the instructions I was given, I used DD to copy the first 512 bytes of /dev/sda7 to the Windows primary partition (sda1) as bootloader.lnx. But the resulting file is empty, and it won't boot. I repeated the whole process - formatting, installing FOUR times, and same results. I have no idea where GRUB was installed. It is apparently not in the MBR, because I still have my normal Windows boot. I downloaded the 10.10 alternate installer and got the same exact results. Even switched from XT3 to XT4. After two weeks of this nonsense, I still have yet to see Linux boot.

when i try to boot the 11.04 64-bit alternate.iso i get the following message, after it says that isolinux blabla is loaded: EDD: Error 8000 reading sector 2855 and when i remove the cd it says: gfx.c32: not a COM32R imageand then there is a grub-shell.

I have a Centos 5.5 system with 2* 250 gig sata physical drives, sda and sdb. Each drive has a linux raid boot partition and a Linux raid LVM partition. Both pairs of partitions are set up with raid 1 mirroring. I want to add more data capacity - and I propose to add a second pair of physical drives - this time 1.5 terabyte drives presumably sdc and sdd. I assume I can just plug in the new hardware - reboot the system and set up the new partitions, raid arrays and LVMs on the live system. My first question:
1) Is there any danger - that adding these drives to arbitrary sata ports on the motherboard will cause the re-enumeration of the "sdx" series in such a way that the system will get confused about where to find the existing raid components and/or the boot or root file-systems? If anyone can point me to a tutorial on how the enumeration of the "sdx" sequence works and how the system finds the raid arrays and root file-system at boot time
2) I intend to use the majority of the new raid array as an LVM "Data Volume" to isolate "data" from "system" files for backup and maintenance purposes. Is there any merit in creating "alternate" boot partitions and "alternate" root file-systems on the new drives so that the system can be backed up there periodically? The intent here is to boot from the newer partition in the event of a corruption or other failure of the current boot or root file-system. If this is a good idea - how would the system know where to find the root file-system if the original one gets corrupted. i.e. At boot time - how does the system know what root file-system to use and where to find it?
3) If I create new LVM /raid partitions on the new drives - should the new LVM be part of the same "volgroup" - or would it be better to make it a separate "volgroup"? What are the issues to consider in making that decision?

I bought a 4 gb usb memory stick for a windows 7 rescue disk for my 10' asus laptop Eee pc 1005 HAB.Can it work alternate to a CD rescue disk? It has a FAT 32 partition. Maybe I should format it?I used freeware to put Ubuntu 10.10 netbook on the same hardware kind, a Sandisk memory stick. Instead of Nero, Pendrive Linux. I can install it after I make a rescue disk, and shrink drive C.

WinXp sp3 is on disk sdb, then installed Ubuntu 10.04 on sda, can go into diff OS without any problem. I am going to move sda to another machine, when I unplug sda, WinXp can't start to boot on sdb. How to fix it?below is my case output$ sudo fdisk -l

I installed Debian on my PC with a Acer Stock motherboard (xc600) with amd64 and after the installation finished it told me to remove my installation media and reboot. After reboot I was returned this message ' ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.'. I have verified with gparted using mint live OS that I have Debian installed on my system.
I got believes that this may have be caused by a broken grub or I need to configure something I don't know how in BIOS.
I will update the topic later..
My installation media was a USB 2.0 flashdrive with a Debian 8.2 Jessie Installer and 9 different Linux distros. I have installed Debian multiple times before on my laptop and never had this problem so I know how to go through the installation process and set the partitions.

I have a (slightly complicated) dual/multi boot system.
I keep getting boot errors (when choosing ubuntu from the grub2 menu)

Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /boot
If I switch off and restart, ubuntu will then start without issue.
My setup is like this ....3 disks, one with 10.10 clean install - so Grub2, separate partitions for /, /boot and /home, one with windows 7, one with windows XP and 10.04 wubi (this is my old disk which I will trash once I'm happy with my upgrade to 10.10 & 7 on separate disks.
I installed 7 and 10.10 with ONLY their disks installed. After both were working, I added all disks and rejigged the grub2 menu (using update-grub and StartUp-Manager).
This problem only seems to occur if my previous boot was not 10.10 ( I will investigate this further). It's as if something (grub2 ?, the bios ?) is remembering part of the previous boot and not using the grub2 menu completely.

I downloaded the Fedora live dvd iso file, burned it to a dvd. I was wondering if I forgot to do something or did I do something wrong. When I try to install from the dvd I get this error message, isoLinux: Disk error 80 , AX = 42A7 , drive 9F Boot Failed: press key to retry When I press a key to retry I get the same error. I also tried to install virtual pc and get not boot disk found.

I had a a problem booting last night when my laptop battery came loose and caused a crash during boot.It ceased loading a daemon and I turned it off with the power switch, then I received the boot error,then i checked the linuxdrives directory and it was corrupt,I then, out of ignorance, ran wubi from within windows XP and said unistall believing that it would reinstall and fix itself.Thus you can see my green behaviour.I have been searching the threads and have tried many things but have had no success, I will suffer a great loss if I lose that load of Ubuntu as I have allot of work stored there, and in my Thunderbird accounts.

Added an SSD (dev/sdc) and decided to move some less often changed directories there. Started with /usr and /boot, leaving / on a primary in the first drive, for now. All started ok, and my changed fstab mounted the right ones, and the system works.
However, grub is actually using the original /boot on / on sda1. I cannot see any way to change this. (Which makes it sorta hard to update the kernel

Okay, since it has two choices, I tried to tell it which one to use. But, grub> root (hd2,5) does nothing.
Disk /dev/sda:
what I seem to recall, grub doesn't care about the boot flag on the disk. Nor does it care about primary vs. logical (except GNU doc says "makeactive" only works on a primary?).
The GNU doc also indicates that it looks for a directory /boot on the partition, so if you're mounting a partition as /boot, it also needs to contain a /boot directory under it. Tried that, but no change.
Is my problem the logical partition? Does that prevent "grub> root" from changing it? I'm afraid to wipe out the old /boot and find that I can't start up.

I have two almost identical computers -- identical model & type designator; minor difference in hardware details. Both boxes have an installed and running Ubuntu -- one Lucid (v10.04 LTS) and one Jaunty (v9.04). Consider box-A with drive-A and box-B with drive-B. Q1: If I swap drive-A to box-B and drive-B to box-A, is system startup clever enough to work around any minor hardware differences?

One minor difference is the wifi card. Both are Intel -- one is the 3945 while the other is the 4965. Another difference is partition sizes and mount points. Another difference is RAM size -- 3GB vs. 4GB. Another difference is the specific brand and specs for DVD=RW. I could go on, but the differences seem minor if not trivial.
I have a reason for such a swap that makes sense to me. I simply want to make sure that the system startup will figure out what is different. Q2: Is there some command or utility to run after I make the swap that will add-remove packages and make the install on drive-A better matched to box-B, etc?

After using slackpkg to update to -current on a new slack(32) install I was greeted with kernel panic "can't mount root fs" on reboot.
It was looking in the wrong place. I thought I answered yes and slackpkg would run lilo for me when it was done with the upgrade but perhaps I misunderstood.
I had my handy dandy USB boot stick so I set the bios and booted from USB. OK fine, I pointed to the correct location (hda1) and voila.
a 64bit kernel... The machine in question is a 2004 vintage celeron notebook
To my question: Is there a way I can point the loader to another kernel?
One last piece of the puzzle, the dvd drive is bad and I don't (yet) have a PXE server or even another linux box.

I have installed Kubuntu on external WD HDD , it does NOT boot on this laptop but works on couple of other laptops , attached is the results txt output of the boot_info...sh.I can boot with USB flash drive that has kubuntu live Cd image when I use the external HDD ,it gives a blinking cursor only

I have a Samsung N110 running Windows 7 and I would like to install Ubuntu Netbook remix which I downloaded from [URL] I want to install it on the netbook in lieu of Windows so am not looking for a Live CD/USB option. I have run usb-creator.exe on my XP machine but no matter what I do I can't get the "make startup disk" to un-grey. I have selected the CD which contains the iso I unpacked, and it detects my USB drive (I:) which is 4Gb I had exactly the same problem at work when trying this with the .iso I downloaded so it isn't specific to this machine.

have previously burnt many iso Ubntu disks with no problems but evry time I try whether Linux or win I cannot boot from the disk. The burnt disk shows separate files rather than a single iso. I've tried them on 3 different computers with the first boot device set to CD and they all boot normally into Grub (except the netbook which only has XP).

This afternoon I finally had the time to run this Ubuntu KK CD and load over my old xp/Jaunty J partition. I had previously run the distro. through the CD, without harming my old partition. On doing so the system consistently reported my Toshiba ATA 120 gig hard disk had multiple bad sectors and was failing. As a true end user (who mucks only when necessary with the CLI) I just figured writing over the partition would end the failure. To be sure I ran Memtest8.66 v2.11 from the LiveCD; everything checked out fine. So I installed KK.
Or was I? Why did it still have the "Install ubuntu 9.10 ISO" icon on the left hand side of the screen? How did the CD come to whir when I tried starting apps like Open Office? Something wasn't right. So I rebooted, this time from the HDD. The start up looked predictable - there's that PXE-E361 Media Test Failure on some cable, I've been staring at that since I built the dual partition. But what's this? PXE-MOF: exiting EXE ROM. Huh? This is a Toshiba Satellite A105 with a 200 gH 1gig Pentium M. When I boot the liveCD I get this trial environment that works fine. When I try installing from it I can even see that I'm writing over the previous, whole 9.10 partition I created this afternoon. Regardless when I boot from HDD I get that weird letter j..

When windows was installed I could boot to a windows promp and then I could take out the cd or usb and install another one with a program and run it. why my computer bios will not let me do this now that I have a ubuntu load? I'm sure there is a logical explanation. Also maybe a work around? (It will run a windows or ubuntu install cd or usb but no simple boot disk.)

I have a desktop which has 10.04 loaded. There are apparently some errors as some of the menu items didn't load correctly, and after a while, it freezes showing a pink and purple screen with vertical lines. This is not a dual-boot setup. I have a new 10.04 disk which I have tried to boot from to simply over write it with a fresh install but the computer will not boot from the disk.

I am running Windows 7 and wanted to install VMWare and Ubuntu on it. So I downloaded VMware and the Ubuntu install files but I got stuck on the Language prompt. So I researched and downloaded Ubuntu alternate iso file and the install went fine.
I now launch VMWare and get a prompt for username and Password which I enter.

Actually, thats a lie. It works on the initial screen (where you can select how you want to install via command line or text based etc etc).But whatever option i select from there it loses the keyboard.The first screen (asking for keyboard layout) just sits there on english but i am unable to advance. Its as if my keyboard is unplugged (has LED backlights and they turn off as soon as it hits this screen so im guessing its USB driver related).I wanted the alternate to do drive encryption but it doesnt seem to want to know. Normal CD works fine btw.
