General :: Windows 7 - Recover ~1TB Data From A Bricked NAS?

I bought an IcyBox NAS a little while back, and it recently died on me. I have physical access to the disks inside (1.5TB RAID 1 array), and the box was running a version of Linux. I now have the difficulty of retrieving the data from the disks. As best I can tell, the NAS uses software RAID. All I have available are 2 Windows machines, one of which has sufficient free space to hold the data from the NAS. I've booted one of the Windows machines into Linux using a Ubuntu CD, and Ubuntu can see the array drive(s), but cannot mount them.
What would be the quickest and easiest way to retrieve the data from the disks? What data can I collect from Ubuntu (10.10) that will help me pin down why it can't mount the array volume?
When I installed Ubuntu, it created a folder called 'ubuntu' on my hard drive. Is there a way to recover my data from this folder and use it with a newer version of ubuntu. I can't access Ubuntu on my computer. It boots straight into Windows.
I have a full Ubuntu 9.10x64 install on an external hard drive and I was recently asked by a friend who has a laptop running 32 bit vista if I might be able to help him in recovering anything from pictures to Quick Books files. He believes the hard drive is corrupted. His laptop is an HP with less than 2 gigs of ram, and he is not sure about the motherboard/chipset. It may or may not support x64. He went out and bought an iMac the other day so he wouldn't need to deal with not having a working computer.
Now I have 2 questions. The first being, I am wondering if my x64 install will still be able to run if I tried booting to it from his computer in the event that the chipset that does not support 64 bit architecture, or do I need to revert to a 32 bit install? My instinct/what I perceive to be the obvious answer, is that yes, my x64 install should/will be able to boot via the bios. My second question is: how do I go about loading Ubuntu once the external is plugged into the iMac?
I bought a new dell studio 1555 from best buy about a year and a half ago. Got the warranty because I have 4 kids and something is bound to be dropped, spilled or smashed at some point. True to my visions, something did get dropped smashed and spilled, and pennies got stuck in the dvd slot. So I took it in when the screen stopped coming on because of a loose connection in the hinge and they did apparently fix that problem, but also were benevolent enough to wipe out my entire hard drive, operating sytem and all, totally free of charge. I guess they figured since I like accidents so much, I would just LOVE having 18 months of data and programs disappear into thin air. I know all about how I should have backed it up, and I am not whining too much over this. I will roll with the punches. But there are just a FEW things on that hard drive I will really miss. Like a few crucial spreadsheets that I was not able to save to my external drive before the screen went south. Now that windows 7, I am not planning on missing at all. In fact I am loving running my new Ubuntu 11.04 from my usb and knowing that those idiots will not be able to screw this one up next time. But I would really like to be able to recover those files if I can. Is there any way to get those back? And I also cannot figure out how to find device manager. Do I have to install to hard drive to use that? I know these are all probably total newbie questions. But hey, i got here as soon as I could. Everybody has got to start somewhere.
i specifically told ubuntu to install alongside my operation system (windows) and instead it installed over windows and deleted all the other partitions... i had 200gb of data that i completely lost is there anyway to recover this data?

Well i have an 20GB HDD (/dev/sdb) formated with ext4 and has very important files on it .All of sudden something went wrong and the 20GB partition has been lost . Now how do i have to recover that partition and primarily recover those files . Gparted shows no partition on it but unpartitioned space .
I wanted to get some data off a second disk, let me tell you what I did. (that didn't work). The data I am looking for is under /etc/ on the second disk. I looked in /dev for /dev/hda or hdb but there was nothing.
I found: /dev/sda /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb2
So I guessed /dev/sdb /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb2 was the second disk. So I did: mkdir /tmp/olddisksdb mkdir /tmp/olddisksdb1 mkdir /tmp/olddisksdb2
Then I did mount /dev/sdb /tmp/olddisksdb and got mount: you must specify the filesystem type mount /dev/sdb1 /tmp/olddisksdb1 and got no feedback (good?) mount /dev/sdb2 /tmp/olddisksdb2 and got mount: you must specify the filesystem type
If I do: ls /tmp/olddisksdb - I get nothing. ls /tmp/olddisksdb2 - I get nothing ls /tmp/olddisksdb1 - I get:
A HP Netserver LP2000r, with original SCSI controller and HP NetRaid-2M controller, 3x 36GB Ultra3 HDD in RAID5, Debian (sarge/etch), has crashed after 992 days without reboot. From all that I can see, a hardware failure, most likely with the memory. The HP Diagnostic tools cannot find any problem, but everytime I boot into Knoppix, I get between 2minutes and 2 hours of runtime, and then either a kernel oops or just a complete and sudden halt.
Well, the box has earned its money. However, there is some data on the drives that I need to recover (yes, I have beaten myself up properly about not backing up that data, don't even go there !). There are three partitions: sda1 is /, sda2 is swap and sda3 is a LVM volume with 3 logical volumes on it. As far as I can tell, the hardware defect must have been creeping in and has made a total mess of the inodes in all these partitions.
After booting into Knoppix, I can restore the volumes using pvscan, vgscan, lvscan, vgcfgrestore and vgchange. If I try and mount them: mayhem. So I try and check them, using fsck.ext3. All sorts of interesting nonsense, such as a completely empty inode 11 (the first inode) and then obviously from there on all else is pointless. I tried using debugfs, but the information on what to do with it is somewhat spurious.
P.S.: Tomorrow I will go and get myself a 16GB Flash Drive and then hopefully I will be able to dump the partitions one by one onto that drive and transfer the images onto a different computer for analysis and data recovery.
On my drive I had 2 partitions for an Ubuntu 9.04 (swap, /) and one partition for Windows. I figured out that I should upgrade my Ubuntu, so I deleted the "/" partition and in its place created 2 new partitions (/, /home) .
After installing the latest Ubuntu 11.04, I realised that although I had backuped everything I needed in a 2nd disk and I could access those folders and their data from my Ubuntu 9.04, both my Windows and the 11.04 can locate neither the folders nor the data now. I have no idea why this happened (perhaps some issue with the mounting?) I have tried the trial version of Stellar Phoenix linux data recovery tool, but it cannot locate the old partitions.
I have accidentally removed vmware virtual disk, my host operating system is RHEL5.2 with ext3 file system, i have used photorec, magicresue and foremost but still no luck to recover the vmdk file. i have seen in foremost configuration file that there are some predefined files (ex- doc, pdf, jpg, avi, zip, etc),
1. is there any way to add vmdk file extension on that configuration file?
2. if yes how can i do ?
3. by adding vmdk on configuration file, can i specifically use recover option for vmdk?
I have accidentally ended up in deleting my root directory while I blindly fired command while watching movie.
I fired following command #rm -rf ~/<SPACE>*.out instead of this command #rm -rf ~/*.out
Things already done: 1) Created /root directory relogged to get some of basic settings of gnome and Desktop. 2) Things went well now when I login my desktop ,gnome environment and other things looks to be working well only prompt on my terminal has changed. I can fix it any ways.
Things I want to ask: 1) I haven't studied much about contents of /root directory to best of my knowledge is it like other user's home directory with some basic configuration files for mostly required applications. SO my question is have I lost any thing important system file or something? 2) If I have lost any important configuration or system data how can I recover it without reinstalling whole system? (My opinion about this is, It is quite possible but to do so, as far as I know capabilities of linux. But I still want comments from experts before I try any things on it because I don't want to backup my whole HDD and reinstall the whole stuff again for me and also my sister's stuff in MS.)
Last night I made the mistake of formatting my media drive. Before the format, it was ext4. then I formatted it to ext4 again because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing(this mistake only gets made once). Now im looking for away to recover any/all of my data. The drive in question is 1tb. I have not written any new files to this drive.
I am facing a serious problem.I installed UBUNTU 10.04 and encrypted it during installation. I accidentally erased some of the necessary files from root folder. now the the OS is NOT booting.luckily i still have the encryption key i have some important documents in that drive (desktop folder).
PS: I have tried to run Live Ubuntu it shows the Root, but it does not enter any of the folder.

I tried to install linux, as there was a problem with XP overwriting grub, I chose write grub to /dev/sda8 (which is where the linux install was appearing earlier).
I guess this borked the filesystem somehow. Now the NTFS data partition and the swap space are appearing as one free space. Well actually before that some linux live CDs (including gparted were seeing the entire drive as unpartitioned). I had to go into XP and delete the /ext4 partitions.
Is there any way for me to recover the NTFS data partition ?
Computer has 3 partitions: windows swap, windows recovery, and 3rd, which currently has linux.
There is grub installed, which lets me choose to run windows recovery, or linux. Both boot fine.
But. I'd like to remove Linux, and use recovery to install windows. When I boot to recovery, and make it install windows, it does so, but after rebooting all I get is:
error: no such partition grub rescue>
ls shows 3 msdos partitions, but I don't know what to do with it further.
When I did boot Linux rescue, and overwrote first 446 bytes of /dev/sda to remove grub - computer doesn't boot at all.
I do not have any bootable windows disks, just the rescue. I do have another computer I can work on, so I can download stuff from internet if it would help me.
I have installed ubuntu on my notebook, and there are 4 partitons in the hdd, all are NTFS, only one is ext4.
the problem is i deleted some hidden folders(in ubuntu which are not hidden, such as recyclebin and file information table folders) in ntfs partitions, now i need to reinstall the windows 7 back, i have a doubt that even windows will ever recognize those partitions again?
I have a laptop with two partitions, dual booting Vista and Ubuntu. laptop was originally furnished with Vista. It's become totally unusable and I want to install XP on the NTFS partition erasing Vista. I know that after installing XP it will overwrite the MBR and GRUB will be lost. how to recover GRUB after the XP install. all data is now on the Ubuntu partition. I need XP just for games for my kids. barbie and harry potter ...

In my dual booting system consisting windows & fedora 12, for some unfortunate reason I have to reinstall windows .Earlier it was XP. Now it will be Vista. Now how shall I recover my fedora after windows installation. Can I follow the following steps or I have to do something else:

I have two partitions Windows XP (which was already installed before Ubuntu) and Ubuntu 9.1 (which I installed later).Now the XP doesn't boot anymore (sorry but I need it sometimes), the Windows screen with the progress bar appears and then it reboots after a couple of secs.
I can access to the XP partition from Ububtu.Of course I don't want to damage Ubuntu during the XP recovery action.
last week i installed new mint distribution Helena 8 last day i reinstall my Windows XP , now my linux has gone. how can i recover my boot loader ? btw i tried this comands in Live CD:

I put dual OS in my desktop. One is XP, and another one is RedHat EL5. when i installed EL5 in my system, the XP content and my personal files gone. XP is in D drive and EL5 in E drive. My personal files are in C & F drive. Now I would like to recover C & F drive files.
I tried to to install Kubuntu on a usb port to make it portable. I used my buddies laptop and when the program asked if i wanted to erase the Hard drive I made it erase the USB port and install on there. When I was finished windows would no load up from the Hard drive on the Laptop and the message I got was a code and grub rescue. How can I recover Windows with out erasing the files?
I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 on my EEE-PC for most of my thesis research, but I left it running a python script overnight and now I can't get it to login. I was running low on disk-space, and I think the problem is that the script generated a lot of text files and used up all of the available hard drive space.
Now, whenever I try to boot the machine, it reaches the user-select/login screen, but logging in just causes it to go black for a second before returning to the login screen. I have Ubuntu 11.04 on a USB, and Ubuntu Rescue Remix on another, and both allow me to boot up my machine, but I can't see my hard-drive - neither in /mnt/ nor in /media/ - in order to copy my thesis files or to delete some excess text files to free up some hard-drive space.
I have a DVD-R labeled 16x that has been written by me in several sessions (but perhaps only one), always with an iso9660 fs, using a DVD writer whose data are these:
In spite of the last line, the drive is DVD+R compliant too. This is the only DVD drive I have and it seems unable to read that medium. Other discs, it reads them well. Before kissing the disc good bye, I would like to try all possible procedures at my disposal. The disc, by visual inspection, seems to be in a pristine condition. When I insert it, the drive remains with the led turned on for about one minute. I tried 'cdrecord -setdropts driveropts=singlesession dev=x,x,x' to switch the drive to single session mode but with no results. I have many tools in the cdrtools package:

Last week I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system in dual booting. I had installed succesfully both but unable to see data files from windows OS. Though I have excercised the options in various resources available on internet/blogs. System takes about 03 hrs during installation process. I am also unable to configure Thunderbird.

I will begin by announcing that I really know very little about Linux, not having dealt with it previously. That being said, a hard drive that has important files on it was given to me to back up without having been told it was Linux. I piggy backed it into a Windows PC and initialized the hard drive. When it showed there were no files to access I then realized this must be a Linux based hard drive. I attempted to access files with both Linux Reader and Linux Recovery but they both act as though the hard drive has no files on it. And no I did not format the drive, I only intialized it.Is there any way to retrieve files from this hard drive being initialized in Windows? I do have a Linux machine that I could piggy back it into but I have never messed with this machine before, or Linux for that matter, so wouldn't know where to begin.
Because a customer of mine is inefficient in doing backups I have to do a recovery if possible. Drive had vista on it and was really bug infested to point of a reload. I reloaded vista from scratch and then my customer says "Oh, I guess I forgot to back those files up...".Is it possible to recover some files even though vista was reloaded? I suppose the basic answer is "As long as they havent been overwritten yet".
Im running testdisk and its made a ton of directories with files in them that I assume it has recovered. Im going to have to write a script I guess to grab the files as there are about 600 directories!I guess what Im asking is 1. What are my chances of success? 2. Has anyone ever recovered files from a vista re-install? 3. Is testdisk the best way of going about it (with photorec).
