OpenSUSE :: Some Applications Not All To Print Text In Landscape Correctly
Apr 28, 2011
My setup:
openSUSE 11.4.
Acer Extensa 5635ZG
Epson Stylus Photo PX710W, connected with WiFi
I have just discovered that I can't print text from libreoffice writer/calc if the layout is set to landscape. The letters seems to have been stretched and printed over each other. If I print the same document in kword/kspread everything is printed as it should be. I have generated a pdf of the document and printed from okular/acroread, even then it's not printed correctly. Although it looks ok in okular/acroread. What else that can be seen is that when it's wrongly printed the printout is printed in the opposite direction compared to when it's printed correctly. I.e. the tail comes first on the paper so to say. Where should I begin to search for faults?

I am trying to print a schematic from KPDF (Suse 11.2) onto an 11x17 sheet of paper. Regardless of the printer settings I use or which driver I choose it won't rotate the image and fill the page. I have the same problem with kiCAD. If I use Okular it prints part of the drawing in one corner at the 8.5x11 scale.

I have a Calc spreadsheet that has 3 sheets. The first page is set for Portrait and the remaining pages are Landscape. Currently I am printing each page as a separate print job.I would like to print the entire Calc pages as one job where the printer prints the first page as portrait and the remaining pages as landscape without user intervention.
I do not see any command in the print dialog or in open office dialogs that tell the printer to change orientation. It seems that OpenOffice fails to tell the printer the page orientation. Is there any way to accomplish this. If a macro is required how do you write it and how is it executed?

We are running RHEL 5.1 on the 2.6.18.53 kernel. We are attempting to pass print jobs to a Lexmark printer with the lp -o landscape command. The print jobs continue to print "portrait". Is anyone aware of this issue and is there a work-around to get these print jobs to print in landscape format?

one month at this stage and noticed recently that all automatic updates to my system have ceased, so I tried a zypper update from the terminal yesterday and believe it or not I got 1110 updates, about 7 deletions a 3 programs were changing architecture. This went all all day yesterday and finished sometime early this morning when I had to force a reboot as the shutdown button did nothing. After all those updates I do not notice any version upgrades for a few things I checked like Office, Amarok, DigiKAM etc but I am back to a most annoying problem that I had in my first few days i.e. my printer an Epson Stylus Color 760 is totally messing up 2nd and subsequent pages in a printout.
The last time this happened it seemed to sort itself out because deleting the printers discovered and their drivers did nothing. I am sorry to say it is putting me off SUSE 11.4 which I had liked BUT it is so frustating when I can't eben print more than one page correctly. I have come from Windows 7 where these problems did not exist.

When installer is loading linux kernel and it goes to 100%, the next thing that I can see is black screen and can just use shut-down button. This situation appears about 90% tries. After 7 reboots I installed Suse successful but the problem appears also now. Just after select Suse in GRUB, the screen print some text about half a second and it goes black. Sometime I can start system normal. I use openSUSE 11.3 Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 4gb ram, Geforce 8600M GT graphic card

my printer has a known CUPS bug; A4 is printed as letter size; i.e. printing only appears on the bottom half of the page. I downloaded a ppd file at [URL] but it improved nothing. Also installed the bug's patch (sorry I don't have the bug's number) and followed the instructions; zero results. Upgraded Ubuntu 9.04's CUPS-related repositories to 9.10 but no improvement. Every test page still comes out with just the top third sitting at the bottom.

Having selected 'Landscape', when printing using 'File|Print' in KWrite, the text is presented in landscape but formatted to a size of approximately 105mm x 590mm (bottom half of a landscape page and stretched to twice the width, printing only the left hand side). I have a similar issue with some other programs too, but not Open Office.Having configured 'cupsd.conf' to log in debug mode it would seem that the problem I'm getting may be to do with applications that output in 'application/pdf' format, because in the CUPS log for Job 57 line 479 seems to indicate that KWrite has output a PDF file:
Code:[Job 57] File of type application/pdf queued by "root". Then at line 490 there's a line that seems to indicate no landscape, even though this was selected through the user interface of KWrite (and works in Open Office)!:Code:[Job 57] argv[5]="document-name=4b69b8710002c media=A4 nolandscape job-uuid=urn:uuid:5c6fae2f-ad2f-3364-5f04-bb5500d1eabc" I would have attached the various 'log' and 'conf' files but I'm new to this and I just can't find a way to get attachments enabled for my login!I've spent hours on this, if anyone can give me any pointers I would be most grateful, however I am no Linux system administrator I'm afraid.Current system: openSUSE 11.2 x64, Kernel 2.6.31.8, CUPS 1.3.11, gutenprint 5.2.4, KWrite 4.3.1 release 6, KDE 4.3.1.1Old system (that worked with this printer): openSUSE 11.1 x32, gutenprint 5.2.2

I have installed Kubuntu 10.10 on a macbook3.1 and everything (almost) is working fine. My sole problem is that the left control key, despite being mapped to:
keycode 37 = Control_L NoSymbol Control_L NoSymbol Control_L
and having the right behavior in the terminal, does nothing on most other applications, like kate, money managers, intelliJ, etc.
It does work properly also on Google Chrome.

Background information: So you know how we choose from a list what applications we want associated with a file type? It's a menu full of applications.I've filled mine with different applications I've reinstalled. There are many repeats of application names, with the only difference being most of them don't work. This is due to changing the installation location, via WINEPREFIX. No biggie.I'm also using Ubuntu 10.10. It's very nice!
Problem: How in the world do I get rid of these unwanted list items? It's very hard to find the ones that are good.
Plan B: The easiest solution, so far, is to reinstall ubuntu and install these applications correctly the first time. Then I won't have all of those repeats.

Running the same file from its folder in /home runs the game fine.Is this common problem with shortcuts or is it just me and the game?

I have various text files -- some "source code", some "data files" -- that I'm formatting with enscript. Can someone answer some questions about use and workings of enscript?
1. How does enscript know which printer to use as a default? My command lines do not specify a printer but output makes its way to the system default printer. Neither PRINTER nor LPDEST are set in the environment. So what is enscript using to learn the default?
2. How do I get --landscape to work as an enscript option? Whatever enscript sends to the printer accomplished the N-up and other formatting, but the content appears portrait instead of landscape?
3. Running Ubuntu Lucid desktop, I also use CUPS and HPLIP for printing. Need to understand the interactions among the desktop CUPS and bash shell command line access to printing? I tried viewing the environment looking for printer and similar variables. 'set' showed a group of shell functions instead of environment variables. I'm confused.
Follow-up: The functions were all ImageMagick details. (blush) The variables went by so fast I missed them. Even so, I still don't find anything to tell 'enscript' which printer is default.

We have a lpr server for printing (not CUPS for compatibility with complicated domain/systems). We configured our linux systems -- RHEL4, RHEL5, and Ubuntu 10.04 -- so that lpr is one of the gtk print possiblities by adding 'gtk-print-backends = "lpr, pdf, file"' to gtkrc. This works great for several gtk-enabled applications like Acrobat Reader (acroread).
However, Firefox 3+ (tested 3.6.3 & 3.0.19) doesn't actually queue any lpr jobs until after quitting the application.

When I print receipts from certain company's emails, they span three pages or more bloated with images, links and overly large text. I can view the message in plain text by setting the preferences to only display text instead of html, but it doesn't affect what is printed. I still get the full HTML page printed. Is there a way to force evolution to print in plain text instead of HTML?

1. How do I change the icon text for applications?
2. I can't seem to burn DVDs successfully (CDs burn ok though). I've tried burning with K3b, Nero and Brasero - all fail to produce a readable DVD. My burner seems to produce readable DVDs when running WinXP with Nero though.

I'm finding that some applications (2 thus far) are not properly displaying text. I first noticed it in Firefox, where it appears that NO text is being rendered because the search and "feeling lucky" buttons are both about 1.5 characters wide and blank inside. I'll include screen-caps below to exemplify what I mean. In addition to Firefox, I just tonight noticed that my PDF reader is apparently rendering all text in white (even though the same PDF opens up fine with black text on my Windows desktop computer). For the PDF's, I can see that there is text there because I can do a Ctrl+A and copy, and then when I paste it into gedit I can see all the text.
Some background: I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit w/gnome. The first thing I did after installing Ubuntu was to install the BlackBuntu theme by copying appropriate files from /usr/share/ from the BlackBuntu live USB.
What I've tried: I've uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox a couple of times, but ultimately I just installed Chromium which is working fine and is not experiencing the same issue that Firefox is. I've tried changing my theme back to default, changing all the fonts (under Appearance Preferences), and nothing is fixing this. I'm about to just do a full reinstall of the OS, paying careful attention to at exactly what point in my process everything gets screwed up, but I'm hoping that someone has an idea that I can try before I have to reinstall the system.

I have been using Ubuntu 10.10 for a few months now. I enjoy working with it, but there is one strange problem with Open Office (and Inkscape as well). When I attempt to work with either the word processor or spread sheet (this probably applies to other Open Office applications as well) under the default theme in Ubuntu, inevitably I get text and other elements blotted out with line smudges.
I have included a couple of screen shots, but I am wondering if this is a recurring problem with theme support (Open Office doesn't really use GTK/Gnome, does it?) or if it is some strange affect with the nvidia driver that I installed (version 260-19-06, my card is a GeForce Go 7150M). I have also noticed a slightly different problem, with Inkscape, where the ruler marks that track. The cursor movement don't delete themselves when the cursor moves, so the little triangles build up.

I'm trying to fill in an application form that I downloaded. It has some shaded areas where I can answer questions, but there are
a couple places where the shaded areas are missing.Have you previously applied with the C.B.E? "Readonly content cannot be changed No modifications will be accepted." Can I add a shaded area in so I can fill this in, or can I disable the read only part?
