I've PHP5 installed on my server, and just recently I installed a new application that requires gd library.
understand that I can have gd library installed via apt-get install php5-gd command.
Question: do I need to remove php5 instance (which was installed together with apache2/mysql using tasksel command) prior to installing php5-gd?
I installed the PinguyOS version of Maverick, but even after disabling all the repositories that came with it I still couldn't get this to work. Therefore this must be a problem with Ubuntu 10.10 itself, however if this problem does exist is Ubuntu, I'm surprised these forums are flooded with complaints. I've searched them up and down and I found nothing. Anyway, the problem is that I can't install digikam, this is the error I get: The following packages have unmet dependencies.
digikam : Depends: kdebase-runtime but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kdepim-runtime but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libkde3support4 (>= 4:4.4.4) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libqt4-qt3support (>= 4:4.5.3) but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: kipi-plugins but it is not going to be installed

The problem here seems to be that the kde libraries that come with ubuntu are version 4.5 for everything. And it seems digikam 1.4 is built against kde 4.4.
I attempted to install the latest version of Digikam, v1.6, by connecting the Factory repository , then an upgrade via YAST. It automagically included upgrade of certain kde4 packages to v2.5.80.
System ran OK for a while, then I got a Plasma Desktop Shell crash notice and now cannot restart X. I can boot to level 3. I upgraded all the kde components to 2.5.80, but that did not help.
Has anyone successfully done this? Was there a hidden secret to success?
If all else fails, am I correct that

Digikam will not rotate images. Worked fine in all previous versions. Tried installing 1.3 from this repo

I've added my "Music" and "Video" folders to my media library in VLC which is useful, but it doesn't seem to update itself when I add/delete/rename files (using my file manager).
The only way I can find to update VLC's record/cache is to remove and re-add the Music/Video folder to the media library. Is there a better way?
I have installed mpd on my Arch box and it starts correctly with "/etc/rc.d/mpd start" My clients (ncmpc,sonata and gmpc) connect. My problem is that I can't update the client - at least when I try I only get a partial update. I have around 5 gb of music but only 3 albums appear (2 different artists.)

I ran the automatic update today and it requested a restart afterwards. After the restart, I don't have any icons on my desktop, can't open windows other than the terminal. If I try to run software from the terminal, I get the following error.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to get the libstdc++.so.5 library ( on a computer with Fedora 8 and don't wonder why it's so ancient,-there is a good reason for it) but I don't have Internet access from that computer, so I can't get to the online repo's.
However, I do still have the installation disk, and I'm typing this from a computer (SuSE 10) that is half a meter from the Fedora box.
I tried the "ADD/REMOVE Software" option on the menu, but it keeps on looking for the online repo and then if it doesn't get it, it fails.
Is it possible to get this library from the installation disk. How? Could I download the single package from the online repo onto the SuSE machine and then move it to the Fedora machine? How do I then tell the Fedora machine to "incorporate" it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm reading about shared, static, and dynamic libraries. What is SDL? Is it static, shared, or dynamic?
I always thought a library would be a lot of .h and .cpp files compiled separately into .o files and then if you compiled your own program you could use the -l parameter to link the library and it was all compiled together. Now I'm not so sure.
I don't even see any SDL .cpp files in my system anywhere. All I have are lots of SDL .h files in /usr/include/SDL and I don't really understand the code in them.
I'm making a wild guess here: SDL is a shared library. SDL itself is NOT compiled into my program, therefore SDL must be on any system my program tries to run on. When I compile and link SDL all it needs is the header files to know what SDL function and objects it can use. And then on every system it uses an already compiled SDL shared library thingy somewhere.
So... where is that part of SDL? All I can find are header files.
I'm thinking the advantage of shared libraries is that someone could say update SDL on their own system and take advantage of the new features without having to download new executables with the new version of SDL compiled into them for every program that uses SDL.
So if I'm making an editor and a game engine and they both use a lot of the same .cpp and .h files that I wrote and I'm tired of updating one and then the other and I need to turn them into a library, then a shared library might be kind of a silly solution. I could just make a static library. Right? Because it's not SDL. Nobody else is ever going to use this library.

I've very much enjoyed the stability of ubuntu, encountering only minor problems which have been easily fixed. I decided to allow my system to update to 10.04 via Update Manager, which it completed and attempted to reboot. My system would only display a black screen from then on out with no indication of loading 10.04. I downloaded and attempted USB reinstall with 10.04 and LTS, always ending with the same result. I'm curious if anyone has had similar problems due to unstable installers or should I assume my system is too old to move past 9.10 (which seems to run without difficulty). Not urgent for my purposes, but I'd like to stay with the supported kernel over time.

I'm trying to install the GD library from the Add/remove software app, but it will not install because it says that it can't resolve a dependency "PHP-common", however, this IS installed, yet it keeps giving me this error. Is there a work around to this or a way to fix the dependencies problem?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?

This looks wrong to me, what could cause it to push loads of dev/build tools and the redhat package manager on me? Edit: Unticking these also unticks a "google-chrome-beta" update below. Does this mean they are now dependencies of that package?
