Ubuntu Installation :: How To Edit The Os Selector Countdown
Dec 14, 2010
I installed Ubuntu 10.4 using wubi from XP. For some reason wubi didnt increase the countdown time on the windows os selector. My P.C. came with a recovery partition, so the os selector has always poped up on startup, but the timer was set to 5sec.(probably to avoid annoyance). Is there a way to edit this so I can have more time to select my option? This is the windows os selector and Ubuntu is on a separate(second) hard drive.Ubuntu version: 10.04 LTS- the Lucid LynxWindows version: Xp servicepack 2Machine: Hp Pavilion a1677c

Previously I could don "sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst" to edit in grub the countdown timer from 9 to eg: 2 seconds. I don't know how to do that with 10.4, as there is no file /boot/grub/menu.lst anymore.

I created a Fedora 13 x86 live image on USB using [URL] I've set it to boot using the USB and when it does I see the 10 sec countdown (or the options if I press a key), I tried all the options to boot the image but the screen just turns black for a few seconds and then the the monitor goes into "power saving mode" and nothing happens (I waited like 10 minutes). What's going on? I am trying to install fedora into an empty (secondary) HD, in the main HD I only have a win XP, and I don't want to burn a cd/dvd that's why I am trying to boot the USB.

I'm 'trying' to dual boot WinXP and Ubuntu 10.10 from 2 separate HDD's. Currently I'm on attempt number 6 but my patience wore thin about 2 days ago - here's the current state of play: I have WinXP running fine (Was installed first) and I have Ubuntu running fine if I use a boot loader disc. I don't have any boot options at all - if I let the PC boot naturally then it just loads XP as normal. I followed this guide to the letter: [URL]
(For those that don't want to read the link: It get's you to create 4 partitions on a drive - 1: ntfs for winxp (not touched) 2: Linux partition 3: linux-swap partition 4: fat32 osshare partition) then if you get no boot options, it creates an ubuntu.bin file which you move to the C: and edit the boot.ini to include it in the options). But all the difference it makes is I get boot options, I press Ubuntu and my computer sits with a blinking cursor for as long as you let it.

Since earlier today, I am stuck at startup on the grub page, I have no countdown and I have to press a key to keep going. I only have Ubuntu on my PC and didn't use to view grub.I am obviously running update-grub in between each of the modification and trying to restart...
here is my /etc/default/grub file:
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
[code]....
Still no chances, any insight why my grub.cfg doesn't not seem to change and be configured correctly during update-grub.

I found a script that counts down to a date and time and after modifying my .conkyrc file I want things to line up nicely, so, now I need leading zeroes on the output, like one timer I have says "4m +2w 5d 20:0:0" and I want it to say "04m 02w 05d 20:00:00" and on a slightly separate issue, it doesn't seem to be counting the minutes and seconds correctly, but that can be dealt with later, the current script is
Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl
#Script Name: howLong.pl
#Author: Nathan Handler <nhandler @ubuntu.com>

So I'm dual booting Windows 7 and Lucid. Thinking I might shorten the timeout for the bootloader (I apologize if my terminology's off), I ran bcdedit and changed the timeout to 0. Little did I know this would prevent my computer from booting into either operating system.
I've got Lucid running off a live cd now; does anyone know how I could change the timeout back from there (or any other way!) and get my laptop working again?

I'm looking for an app that will provide a large (full screen and clear) display countdown clock, basically so I can use my laptop in public to show how much time remains in a basketball quarter. I'm the official timer.If it counts up like in soccer rather than down, that's fine too. If the app can also show the score, that would be great, but it is not a requirement. We don't use a shot clock, so that is not required either.

I've upgraded to 11.04 and found out unity has no desktop window selector at all. After a quick google search it turned out that clicking the Ubuntu icon on the top left corner should bring out some kind of expo-like style selector but that turned out not to be the case for me.
This is all that happens when I click the icon:
Doesn't matter how many windows are open.
Is this some upgrade related error or am I missing something?

I have Ubuntu 10.04 and I use a left panel to show window selector.
I have the problem that Window Selector continuously change the window list from one column to two columns of windows icons.
It is so impossible to click on a window icon to select it.
I've tried to set the size to larger and different sizes. I've tried to show or hide the panel. I've tried to group or ungroup windows.
Is there a way to tell windows selector to stay in one column windows list?

My fedora does not autoboot. I get stuck at the grub selection green. I have the choice of one kernel and I have to press enter before I can continue to boot into the OS. Is there a way to fix this? /etc/grub.conf, menu.lst and /boot/grub/grub.conf are all identical. I have tried different timeout # as well as default=saved. Still nothing works and fedora does not count down.

When I click logout or shut down I get a countdown saying I will be logged out or shut down in 60 seconds, then it counts down. I can click the "shut down now" button, but I find this behavior incredibly irritating. When I click logout I would like to logout NOW.

If I have Dolphin up and running, I will activate a folder, hit Enter, and nothing happens unless my mouse is moving around the screen.I may have Chromium Browser or Firefox running with another app, and when I use Alt-Tab to switch tasks, the app selector window will not appear unless I'm moving the cursor. And once I have chosen the app to switch to, it will not actually make the switch unless the cursor is in motion across the screen.I am running Kubuntu 10.04, KDE 4.4.2

I have had my USB DAC, the aforementioned, working before in Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint 17.1 and Linux Mint 17.2. I've finally settled on Debian with i3wm as I feel I am now at a stage with Linux where I'm comfortable enough to use it.
It may be something to do with audio output being handled by Pulse, but this was the case in *buntu as well, as I used the Pulse config file to up the maximum bitrate output to take full advantage of the DAC.
On Debian (Stretch), I'm getting this when I select the device in AlsaMixer:
As can see, it is operating in USB 2.0 mode, which is correct.

When I minimise windows, or have several open, I've lost the window selector at the bottom to be able to flip between them. I can go to "activities" and then select them there, or I can ctl-tab to them but I used to like the window selector at the bottom. Anybody located the missing window selector ?

I see from dumping executables that seg selector 0x10 is assigned to my stack segment and to my data segments (.bss .data COMMON). The code is using 0x08. My question - how can I control this? I've looked at all the command line options and don't see it. I have a different program that uses 0x10 for code and 0x18 for data. I note that the second program has i386 in the architecture field in the linker script, whereas the first one referenced has i686. Is this what causes the difference? I understand that this architecture field triggers something regarding a library named BFD - is this where I should look? If so, where do I find it? I am runnig fedora. Is there a way to control the association of sections in the linker script with segment registers? I can set up segments in the gdt and can asign them to segment registers. I can - when writing in assembler - assign code to a section. I can relate a segment in the gdt with a register.But I dont see how to tell the section which segment register it is associated with Finally I see that the gcc compiler decides - based on how I initialize a variable - whether to put it into bss or data or COMMON. Do I have any control over this?

I had windows 7 installed on my system prior to the installation of Lucid Lynx. The boot loader for windows is installed in /dev/sda1. The main windows installation is in /dev/sda3 Ubuntu is installed in /dev/sda5.
The grub update has added a loader for windows 7 for /dev/sda3 instead of /dev/sda1. How do i change that to /dev/sda1 in grub 2.0 as it says that it is not recommended to edit grub.cfg in grub 2.0. I know i can add something in custom section but I am not a pro in linux hence i'm not sure how to add that

I had to followed this tutorial on how to Install ubuntu on my Toshiba Satellite M35X-S114. I am stuck on step 2 now. I used one of the options and was able to get Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 onto my laptop. But now on my first restart I have to edit the GRUB menu and change the boot option so I will no longer then the black screen when booting. Only problem is I can't get to the edit GRUB menu. I turn the computer on select Ubuntu to boot. A black screen shows up I hit e to edit then the Ubuntu loading screen comes up (The one that says Ubuntu and has the dots below it) That screen stays up for about a half a second and it goes back to black and hangs there.

I plan to make multi boot linux DVD, with help of SarduCD software, so, I have one question. configured Linux ISO image is not as I would like, I would like to change appearance and to add some softwares, in that way I will not have to change and install it every time I use live DVD in the future. I have now already installed 4 linux in one DVD but evey time I use it, I must change and install softwares, now I want to install on DVD the newest version of Ubuntu and Kubuntu, beside puppy and some other distros, and my question is: how to edit K/Ubuntu ISO image with aim that I don't need to change anything anymore after I burn it on DVD?
I suppose I should unpack and edit ISO image (add softwares and change appearance) and after that pack it again in ISO image. Maybe it is easier to burn Ubuntu to CD, to change and install what I want, into Live CD, and then to extract such Ubuntu to ISO image, then it would be ready to burn it together with other distros into DVD?

I can't edit the partitions in the install setup: I see a hard disk (sda) with no partitions or user devices, and 2 RAID devices.The behavior of OpenSuse 11.2 x64 installation is much alike.I have googled with every keyword combination I remembered, but I can't find anything that gives me a clue to what may be happening.I have already tried the 3 SATA configurations (the IDE that works with the installed Win 7, AHCI and RAID), but the result is always the same. Now the strangest thing is that in OpenSuse, fdisk and parted correctly identify the partitions. As far as I remember, parted isn't able to do modifications and fdisk says that the boundaries of the first, tiny partition, doesn't match the number of cylinders (or something like it). However, I was able create a partition with fdisk on the empty space and format it, delete it again and repeat the process a couple of times with no errors. The partituions are signed as msdos.
GParted from Ubuntu also shows the partitions, but I didn't try to do any modifications, namely because I don't think that it can solve my problem and I don't want to risk installing windows again.The hardware is brand new, a Asus M4A785Td-V Evo with an Amd Phenom II X4 965 and a WDC-WD5000ACCS-0 500 Gb HD. My lazyness made me asking the guys from whom I bought it to install Win7 Ultimate 64 in a NTFS partition, leaving half the disk untouched. They assure me that it is a "plain vanilla" ("next, next, next" installation . I guess I could try to see if I could do the partition setup in the "RAID" part of the Expert partitioner, but I have strong doubts that it solves the problem and it would be quite boring to conclude that I ruined the windows installation for nothing.Could it be any awkward problem specific of the motherboard / SATA controller or its drivers?
