View 9 Replies View RelatedIf I run Ubuntu 10.4 LIVE from CD everything works fine. However, when I try to install, it hangs up at about 23% (while installing Firefox). I thought my HD had a problem, but the same happened after checking it had no bad sectors and even after replacing it. Same as above using a CD of version 8.4 ( live works, install doesn't complete). Same trying the Alternate in place of the Desktop edition. With the same CD's I already installed successfully on other machines. Booting from USB SHOULD be possible ( according to BIOS settings ) but apparently it doesn't work.

AMD Athlon 2200+ 1.8 Ghz
512 MB RAM
HD EIDE 40 GB (Master of the Primary channel)
BIOS AMI dated 13-05-2003
Motherboard : no brand
Two EIDE CD drives (as Master and Slave of the Secondary channel).
I have Fedora 14 installed on my laptop (Installed with few issues) and I'm trying to install ubuntu on my desktop. I had ubuntu 10.04 installed before on a second (250gb) hard drive (Windows 7 on the other 1TB drive) with a few issues and kinda screwed a few things up trying to upgrade to 10.10. So, I said screw it, and downloaded the live .iso for 10.10 (x64) and burned it to disk. I boot from the live CD and choose the install option to use entire 250Gb disk. I choose my options, including to download updates and install 3rd party software and let the install run its course. Everything seems to be going fine and it asks me to restart. So I say yes, the disk pops out and the screen goes dark... and then nothing happens. The computer's still on but hasn't restarted yet. I hit the del key (Which I use to enter BIOS) and the computer finally restarts. I enter BIOS and tell it to boot from the 250Gb HDD, save and exit. However, it gets stuck at the point where it (It, I assume to be the motherboard) says "Loading Operations System ..." and with a blinking cursor on the line underneath. Nothing happeneds.
I tried again just this morning using the same procedure. I'm once again stuck at the "Loading Operating System .." screen.
EDIT: After poking around a bit more, I remembered I was confronted by a GRUB menu when I booted into Windows 7 HDD. So, I selected Linux from the menu and all seems good. Does anyone know why this is? It's very odd, well at least to me. Why would GRUB be on the windows hard drive? Is this something I should be concerned about?
I just bought a new Dell Latitude E6510. When I boot from the Ubuntu 10.10 64bit disk (I've checked the disk for errors already), the initial, purple splash screen comes up, but then the screen just goes blank and stays that way. I never even see a grub screen.I tried Linux Mint 9 with both the 64 bit DVD and the 32 bit CD. Both Mint disks bring up a grub boot screen, but then the screen goes blank just like Ubuntu 10.10. I can hear Mint's "login" sound, but nothing shows up on the screen

Well, I have a Sony Bravia 32xTV with HDMI input coming out of a ZOTAC nvidia type of card. The live CD will recognize the HDMI graphics card and Sony TV/monitor and thus works like Ubuntu normally does. But when I go to install to a hard drive and try to boot up I get just a Black Screen with a frozen cursor. I even have another Ubuntu 8.04 version running on the Sony Bravia TV , so no problem with TV end of things. what do I do now, oh great Ubuntu gurus out there in cyberland? what could I possibly do , what do I read, where do I go , what, where, who, how, when ,which way?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying to fix gparted (it was crashing whenever it started) and then when I would type my password in the login screen, the screen would flash back and then the login screen would come back. If I logged in in a terminal and then did startx, it would just show a black screen. I figured it was broken. I made an Ubuntu 10.10 liveCD and booted it up and clicked on the installer thing and then it froze and an error thing popped up saying Parted crashed.
Essentially what I need to do is install Ubuntu without using the partition GUI.Can I try to find a thing that will let me make an empty EXT4 partition and then a thing to let me install Ubuntu to it?

I am trying to Install Fedora 11 from a live install CD. I know it works because I tried it on another system. After the little Balloon that shows its loading completes the screen scrambles, later a mouse pointer appears then freezes shortly after. When I remove Quiet from Kernel Params. Lots of text then Samething.. Scrambled Screen the Freeze. I have tried adding the Following Parameters to the Kernel (nomodeset, xdriver=vesa, acpi=noirq, noapic). This sounds like a common problem with ATI based graphics and all answers seem to point the "nomodeset" and the "xdriver=vesa" but they dont seem to help.
I've been trying to install fedora 12 on my laptop, however, I've been running into kernel panics on both the live cd and the install dvd. I'm using an HP HDX16 with an Intel Core Two Duo T9400 @ 2.53ghz, and a Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT. Dunno if any other hardware might be involved. Here's the text I get on my screen:

I have finally decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my current Linux system from Fedora Core 2 to Fedora 15. When checking the download page and from reading another thread there is apparently no isos' available for an set of install CDs. An iso is only available for DVD. Since my machine does not have a DVD drive that is obviously not an option. In the past I have only installed from a set CDs and I'm not sure which install method is the best to use. I do have a DSL internet connection and will probably need to increase my partitions sizes. Which install method do you recommend and why?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI've happily finished a SWE course that required VS2010, and thus a new computer to run the hog. Now that the course is done, I'm installing Ubuntu. As the post title implies, the live CD works well and the install goes fine. I'm able to boot up in Ubuntu and do an update. After that, though, Ubuntu freezes on boot. It gets as far as the moving dots but freezes right after that.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI burned my liveCD very slowly and checked it for integrity. It works fine on, for example, my dell inspiron 1012 netbook.
I am able to create the partitions etc and am shooting for a win7 dual boot. Don't want wubi or the like.
I am unable to boot the liveCD or even install the OS as it hangs on clicking "Try" and the install hangs on "Creating ext4 fs on / "
Also the 11.04 CD seems to have a lot of issues based on my browsing the top few pages of the forum.
I'm trying to install (L)ubuntu on an old AMD 1.66GHz based HP laptop, to dual boot with Windows XP. However I'm running into an issue that I haven't come across on any other machine before where after selecting "Install Lubuntu" from the main boot menu, it moves to the scrolling dots splash/loading screen and after ~30 sec or a minute it freezes. There is no error, it doesn't reboot or eject the disk even after several hours of sitting on that splash screen, with the dots frozen, no CD activity, and no HDD activity. I get the same result if I try to boot it as a LiveCD as well.
Can someone help diagnose whats going on? Is it possible changing some boot options will allow it to install? I'm not quite sure where to go with this one.
how do you install Ubuntu over SSH with a liveCD? OpenSuse allow you to do this (well, they used to - maybe it was browser based).
View 3 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has asked me to install Ubuntu for a long time. Today I set up his partitions with Lucid LiveCD and GParted.
However, the LiveCd throws an error that makes me hesitant to continue.
If I boot a LiveCD on my computer I get a question meaning "run Live or install?"
This question does not appear on my friends computer. The first thing you see (about 2 min after boot) is an alertpanel saying something like "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. We will now set up a desktop environment so you can investigate the problem." After that the normal Lucid (Live) desktop appears and functions well, as far as I can understand.
Sorry for not being able to give more data about my friends system. It is a stationary computer about 2 yrs old, running XP. I can't really make investigations on his system either. I had hoped to go there next time and just install Lucid.
Maybe one should try the alternate installer, but my friend just got used to the LiveCD and I would therefore like to use the LiveCD.
I don't understand why it seems to start installation by itself.
Most of all. I wonder if it is a good idea to run the installation from the desktop icon? Maybe it will encounter the same error that the LiveCd seems to encounter at startup?
As with almost every time I try to simultaneously install two operating systems, I have incurred the wrath of GRUB. It's probably more to do with my laptop's terrible hard drive, but here's my problem: I had a 9.10 install and a swap space on this hard drive, then I used GParted from the BT live CD to resize shrink the Ubuntu partition to make space for a BT install. I booted into Ubuntu just to make sure it was working fine. it was. Then I went back in to the BT live CD to install it on the free space.
When I booted up after install, the GRUB screen had changed (obviously), but now only the BT installation (which appeared as Ubuntu 8.10 for some reason) would boot, The previous Ubuntu installs had stopped working, and now came up with "file missing" or "file not found" (cant remember). I tried fsck -v /dev/hda1 (where my 9.10 installation was), and it didn't seem to have any errors. What's wrong with my computer (or GRUB)?
I am attempting to install Ubuntu 10 from LiveCD and when it comes to the partition part there is nothing in the box. I am running Windows 7 Pro with 2 partitions (C and D), with more than 200GB free on each partition.
If this is a common issue and already another thread topic I couldn't find it.
How do I get advanced installation options on the LiveCD? In former versions, I could hit F4 for modes. Do I need to use the alternate CD instead?
For reference, this is what I'm trying to do.
I am in a bit of a pinch here, as I had to get a server up and running fast after a crash, and then just configured a 10.04 LiveCD session to do what I needed. As you may figure, this is, however, not an especially good long term solution, so I will need to do a reinstall of the server. My question is: will the settings and installed software in the live session automatically be transferred when I do the install?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install ubuntu 11.04 from a live cd on a recently formatted 80gb hard drive. Ubuntu seemed to hang and become unresponsive after waits exceeding 40 minutes. As I had some difficulty creating the media, burning the iso to disc, I attempted to install a couple other distros, mint and xubuntu, to see if they worked. These displayed the NTLDR missing message and prompted me to restart.

There is a working 150gb hd with xp on it set as the #2 hd in bios. I would like to install a linux-based os on the smaller drive, preferably ubuntu, but am growing a little impatient. Is there a bootloader or anything I will need to install, and what should be the final configuration of the two hard drives once I get another os installed on the hd dedicated to it?
I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on an older IBM laptop from a LiveCD. (Windows stopped working and I thought this would be a great time to try Linux!) When I boot up Ubuntu (which takes forever) it starts up, but I don't think it is recognizing the wireless card (DL 650). One suggestion I got from the net was to disable the acx module by blacklisting it with the statement:
blacklist acx
in the blacklist.conf file.
The next step is to install ndiswrapper with:
sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper-common
The last step is to get the Windows driver (I have it) and put it in a directory. Then go to that directory and type:
sudo ndiswrapper -i AIRPLUS.INF. This is all well and good, but where do I do these things to test to see if it works and ultimately, if it works, to set it up this way permanently? How do I edit blacklist.conf if this is a LiveCD and as soon as I turn off the machine everything goes away? I am not sure that I can install on the hard disk at this point because I don't want to wipe out Windows yet (it isn't my computer). I would like to prove Ubuntu (or maybe Xubuntu) before committing to it. I am also not sure that the single USB port will allow me to install a USB stick version of Ubuntu.
I have a Ubuntu, Kubuntu 9.10 live CD which I know work because I have installed on my other computer, (HP Pavillion ze2000), and also linux mint 8 and openSUSE 11.2, which also run/work. However when I put them in my current computer and restart, the computer simply ignores them and carries on with vista. I have been testing out the live CD's on VirtualBox and on my second computer and they look pretty nifty But the computer just ignores them as if they weren't there.

I seem to have a knack for having systems built that OpenSuse doesn't like. I remembered this afternoon why I gave up on 11.x - the 11.4 LiveCD doesn't like my setup, at least in terms of booting into a GUI. I have uploaded two photos I took of the bootup screen, in case the provide information that might be helpful. I am sorry about the shakiness, I have CP and the the 2nd one is harder to read because of that, but it says something about "amd radeon hd 6800 series (chip ID 0x6738) requires KMS" among other things.
Even though I'm really rusty in CLI, I'm happy to give it a go, to get this working, if possible. The two screenshots are [URL]
FWIW, the 11.4 LiveCD also really didn't like the NVIDIA GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M in my old Acer Aspire 5520 either.
I have tried "lfslivecd-x86-6.3-r2145" and found it fantastic for my simple use of computer. I hardly can understand anything on the README.html file. I just wondered if it is possible to install the LiveCD's OP system to a partition on my hard-disk-drive.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI installed a new graphic card from ATI 5770 (Club3D). After I did it I removed the propriatery ATI drivers I had installed thru the "Hardware Drivers" in Ubuntu and rebooted. Then I couldn't get into ubuntu again. When it starts booting the display just shuts down and says "Power Saving mode". The computer continues to load things etc. left it running and hoped it would show itself... nothing.
Anyway this happens everytime even with Live CD so I can't even get to a terminal... Started the boot without the splash and it went blank after it started some Speech thing. Just before that there were a few firmware files missing.
I recently had to reinstall windows on another partition on my hard drive due to there not being any good way to run unrealed under ubuntu (believe me, I've tried everything) Is there a way to install grub from windows without using a liveCD or booting to a USB? I have downloaded WINGRUB and to be fair I have no clue how to use it.I no longer can access my Ubuntu partition.
