I'm trying to get an nginx/php-fpm/mysql stack setup on Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS 32 bit version.

Ubuntu Installation :: Packages Needed For Compiling Module?

May 24, 2011

A friend is running Ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop that uses the Ralink RT5390 chip for wifi which requires compiling and adding a module. My plan is to...

1. download on my 10.04 laptop whatever .dpkg packages are needed to compile a new module,
2. meet at a location that has a good wifi (just in case),
3. connect the two laptops with a cross-over Ethernet cable,
4. download and install the compiling tools + module source on her laptop, and
5. cross my fingers.

So I need to know three things:

1. Which Ubuntu packages must I download to be able to compile a new module? Is "build-essential" enough?

2. Where can I find those packages as .dpkg, so I can install from those offline files instead of fetching them from the Net?

3. To get an Ethernet connection going between the two laptops, do I need to do anything extra on her laptop besides assigning it an IP manually that is in the same range as my laptop?

Ubuntu Installation :: Stuck Compiling Kernel Using Localmodconfig

Jun 13, 2011

I'm about to compile a custom kernel using localmodconfig using the guide on this page. Everything's gone well but now I'm stuck. Can anyone work out what the syntax of the part in bold below is supposed to be? I have tried all combinations, e.g. linux-source-2.6.35-Myimage, and a few other permutations. Nothing seems to work.

Ubuntu kernels build with debugging information on, which makes the resulting kernel modules (*.ko files) much larger than they would otherwise be. To turn this off, go into the config's "Kernel hacking"<!-- ; then, under "Kernel debugging", --> and turn OFF "Compile the kernel with debug info".I've hit a few brick walls on the way but they turned out to be wet cardboard.

Ubuntu Installation :: Obtuse Error Message Compiling Freeradius

Aug 6, 2010

This is for freeradius-1.1.7. I'm trying to compile freeradius to get around the missing rlm_eap_tls.so library, following/adapting the instructions in this thread.

Now I'm stuck at an error that says:

/bin/bash: line 20: --with-rlm_sql_postgresql_lib_dir=/usr/lib/freeradius: No such file or directory
/bin/bash: line 20: --with-rlm_sql_postgresql_include_dir=/usr/include/postgresql: No such file or directory

The directories named DO exist. The line numbers make no sense. A script error, perhaps? Or, a badly worded error message that actually means something else?

Ubuntu Installation :: Compiling Pymol 1.4.1 Fails In 11.04 Runs Perfectly In 10.10

May 12, 2011

I like to keep my pymol molecular viewer as recent as possible. With svn and compiling it used to be easy, up until ubuntu natty. Now I get the following error every time I try to compile:

layer1/Scene.c: In function SceneClick:

Please submit a full bug report,
with preprocessed source if appropriate.
See <file:///usr/share/doc/gcc-4.5/README.Bugs> for instructions.
error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1

This is for EVERY version I have tried. I have even downloaded the source code you can find in the ubuntu repositories (current version for 64 bit is pymol 1.2r2) and tried to compile that one, just as prove of concept. I still get the same error. I think I might need something else beyond what I have already, because if the package maintainers could build the older version for natty, I should be too, with the proper packages, shouldn't I?

I was wondering if there was a way to compile these drivers in a Netinstall (preferably the wireless, but wired if necessary)?

SUSE :: Error In Compiling Kernel After Fresh Installation

Oct 21, 2010

I am trying to perform a patch on the current kernel version that was included in SLES SP1 and do a compile of the kernel. However, after installing the new kernel and rebooting, I got a "Waiting for device" error. I tried just compiling the kernel after a fresh installation of SLES SP1 on a physical and virtual machine and got the same problem. When I was doing make rpm, I got errors something like (can't remember but it was something like not in gzip format, file format not recognized and exec format error). Also, what I noticed when performing mkinitrd was that there were errors like the following:

ERROR: modinfo :could not open /var/tmp/kernel-2.6.32.120.7paemod-root/lib/modules/2.6.32.12-0.7-pae-mod/kernel/drivers/char/agp/ali-agp.ko: No such file or directory

The files include others such as amd-k7-agp.ko, ati-agp.ko, efficeon-agp.ko and others. There are also 2 files in the usb direcotry that has this problem. This happened even after a fresh installation. What I did was the following:

cd /usr/src/linux
make cloneconfig
make menuconfig
make rpm
mkinitrd
vim /boot/grub/menu.lst

Programming :: Fortran OpenMPI-1.4.1 Installation / Compiling - Error Message Saying Mpif Not Recognized Command

Feb 4, 2010

I've installed openMPI-1.4.1 on my laptop and I'm trying to compile some fortran code I've written using MPI. I downloaded the openMPI-1.4.1 file from the openMPI website and used the shell script they provide to install it. This is the shell script:

shell$ cd openmpi-1.4.1
shell$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local
shell$ make all install

There was an additional line extracting the tar file, but I did this by hand. The first time I ran this script there was an error on the final stage saying that a directory couldn't be created because of lack of permission. I decided to run the script again this time as a sudo.

Having run the script again everything appeared to install properly, however when I went to compile some fairly simple code I got a message saying that the compiler couldn't find MPI. I was using this command: gfortran messages.f90 -o messages I looked on the openMPI website where it recommends compiling with a compiler called mpif. However when I type mpif messages.f90 -o messages I get an error message saying mpif isn't a recognized command......

Ubuntu :: Compiling Libs Under A Different Directory

Feb 21, 2010

I am fairly new to ubuntu. I have to compile some libraries under ubuntu in a directory other than the default directory and then get the shared object libs (.so) libs for building some custome kernels. I created a directory structure as follows:

/home/username/build-target
/home/username/src-<libname> =>here are the source files for the lib. I need to compile

Now I create a directory /home/username/src-openssl and download the source code and untar it under this directory and issue ./configure --prefix=/home/username/build-target --exec-prefix=/home/username/build-target and then make and make install. I was expecting that the shared object libraries created (.so) files should have gone under /home/username/build-target/libs, however I just see only libssl.a and libcrypto.a and not .so files under the build-target/lib directory. For grep also I did the same thing as above however I don't see any lib directory created under build-target directory as I was expecting.

Since I am doing this on a fresh install, I don't really care if the os gets bricked in the process, and I am sure I can bring it back if I can boot into a recovery console from the old kernel. So, I followed thispost. I patched it and copied and edited a config file from /boot/, saved it as .config, I tried it several times with both removing and not removing /debian and /debian.master directories from the source, yet I always get the same error when I run "make oldconfig".

Ubuntu :: Compiling Old Version Of Avidemux?

Nov 20, 2010

I'll try to make this short, esp because I don't know if this is the right place to discuss a 3rd party program like "Avidemux" I'm running the latest version "2.5.4" or so. It started giving me this problem where no matter what settings I give it, the resulting files are so small it results in an error after almost a day of encoding. ( "XYZ" was NOT saved correctly , for example.) One day I noticed the quantisizer was at max, peaking at 48-50...which made the files tiny. So, I can avoid this sort of, by limiting the maximum and minimum quantisizer in the configurations. Problem is, I have no control over target size or bitrate this way..and sometimes the results are still unplayable.

Naturally I've uninstalled and re-installed several times, and recompiled the x264 codecs using this guide: [URL]... So, I downloaded the Tar.gz of the previous version i was using (Avidemux 2.5.3), the last known thing I know that worked for me...but I have no idea how to install it. I've tried running "Make" / "Cmake" In which I was told that an "in-tree-build" was detected. And trying to run the included "bootStrap.sh" results in : "Permission denied" or file/command not found. I don't think their old releases come in the default Ubuntu/Unix package "deb" right?

All these could be small errors on my end, but It urks me. In between reading up, and everything else that needs to be done in a day, I could have been done by now... Does anyone know where i could be going wrong?
