Fedora :: Java Install Not Showing License Agreement?

Aug 13, 2010

Installed Fedora 13 on an old computer (Sony Vaio RX660 with a 1.8 gig P4 cpu). Downloaded java 21 bin file and as root, placed it in a folder I created: /usr/java so it would be accessible to all users.as root in terminal I did a chmod a+x to the file. Then ls -l, which showed I had full read/write with it. Finally, still root, and in terminal, I did the ./jre <etc>.bin and the package immediately unpacked and created files, but never showed me a license agreement to accept.Java, of course, does not work. What am I doing wrong

Ubuntu Installation :: Msttcorefonts Errant License Response

Feb 5, 2011

Over the last week or so I ran into a problem that was caused by a mix of justifiable frustration with an Ubuntu distribution upgrade in combination with, well let's just be blunt about it: a dimly lit candle upstairs. Ubuntu decided that it was going to download 50 megabytes of font packages whether I wanted it to or not, so, when I came back to find the license requester waiting for my response, I thought it was referring to those fonts that I told it not to download, but which it downloaded anyway (steam, steam, steam!), so I rejected the license. Instead, it was referring to the MScoreFonts package (which I DID want). Upon discovering what I had done, I found out that, using the Software Center, I could download those packages all I wanted to and they would NEVER install properly because I would never again get re-presented with the option of accepting the license. Instead, I am simply reminded over and over again that I have rejected the license. Apparently, Software Center is a tad unforgiving of stupid mistakes.

The answer, my friends, is not blowing in the wind, but is contained in a readme file that gets left where the fonts would have been installed. To save you a little bit of time, here is what you need to do to get those fonts installed: Open a terminal and enter the following quoted command (without the quotes, of course): "sudo apt-get install --reinstall ttf-mscorefonts-installer" This will present you with a text-based requester to use the arrow keys to highlight the "<ok>" at the bottom and hit return, thus accepting the license. From this point the install should go smoothly. Regarding the frustration mentioned above: I am not Japanese; I don't know any Japanese; and no Japanese is going to be using my systems, so, no, I do NOT need that 50 megabyte Japanese font.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get Past Grub?

Jul 12, 2011

Recently I did a clean install of Windows 7 on my HP Desktop because of registry issues, and wanting to clear the XP partition I was no longer using. I also had Ubuntu 10.04 as a 3rd partition which worked fine.

After the clean install of Win7, it is working perfect, I decided to put 11.04 as a second partition. I gave it 200gb of the 750gb HDD. It said it installed, but after Grub, it would just show a jumbled screen and freeze. So I figured maybe a video card issue, so I tried to install 10.10, when I would select it in Grub, my monitor would go to sleep as if it is no longer receiving a signal.

So I go back to 10.04 since it worked on the same machine before. I did everything as before, did it manually by setting EXT4, checking to format the partition, and mount point. It seemed to install just fine, but now when I select Ubuntu in Grub, it just goes to a black screen with the cursor blinking in the top left corner. I left it like that for a while too, just to see if it would eventually get there, but never did. Tried a couple more times and still the same.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot To Past 'GRUB Loading'?

Jan 30, 2010

I've just bought a new laptop (with no installed OS) and have (excitedly) burned a live cd for Karmic Koala 64bit: several people on the laptop manufacturer forums have got working with this particular laptop.

The live session works fine but when I install and then reboot I get 'GRUB Loading' with a flashing underscore and nothing else happens. I've found this thread and this bug report and have tried reinstalling GRUB to no avail.

I also have a live cd for 9.04 which I've tried to install and get a the same problem only now the message is 'GRUB Loading stage1.5' So I don't think it's a problem with the version of GRUB as described in the bug report thread.

I read something else that said it could be a problem with the mbr being in some way geared towards Windows but I'm not sure. I tried following those instructions but nothing happened and then I just got the same error again.

Any help would be greatly received since obviously I'm pretty desperate to get my spangly (and expensive) new machine to work. Edit: I also have a thread at the manufacturers' forums. But we're at a loss there too.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installer Won't Continue Past Second Screen?

Jan 31, 2011

I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu Netbook edition (v10.10) on my (brand new, No other OS installed) Asus Eee PC 1215T. I've successfully booted from the flash drive and can "Try Ubuntu," and everything works when doing so, however when I try to install it, the installer freezes on the second screen, right after language selection. To be a little more specific, that's the screen with the checkmarks next to "has at least 2.5 GB available drive space," "is plugged in to a power source," and "is connected to the Internet."

After I hit the "Forward" button on this screen, I just get an infinite wait cursor. I can still freely check and uncheck the boxes, and click the "Quit" button, so it's not entirely frozen, but it just won't progress any further.

I had this *exact* same problem just over a week ago when I tried to install Ubuntu on my desktop, also using the flash drive method. I ended up using the Windows installer to get it installed on my desktop, but as the netbook doesn't have any OS installed, that's not an option this time.

Installation :: Ubuntu Won't Boot Past Loading Screen / Get This To Work?

Sep 4, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Dell computer of mine but I can't get it to boot past the loading screen. I'm using 10.04 live CD. At the loading screen (boot, memory test, etc..) I select to boot the live CD and after that, I get a black screen followed by no signal from my monitor. My monitor is a 42" LCD TV (I had plans to turn this PC into a HTPC using Ubuntu and Boxee). I know Linux will work on this box, because it has in the past. Now, before I used to have an ATI Radeon X 1300 PCI-E card and now I am using an ATI Radeon 2900GT, and since cannot boot.

Does anyone have any idea on how I can get this to work?

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Somehow Interferring With CMOS POST/ Error Persisting Past Reboot?

Apr 29, 2011

Basically my problem can be neatly summed up as the problem described at both here and here. I can only presume it's a rather uncommon problem to do with a particular hardware setup since I can't find any widespread bug reports of it, but it is (on my system at least) highly replicable. I can reboot my system from Natty and it either one of two scenarios. It can reboot the system (as first asked) then reboot again in the middle of POST and splurge an error about interrupting POST at me (and keep giving me this error every reboot till I go into the bios and resave some settings).

Alternatively, it can get all the way into grub, where I can dual boot into Windows, windows will get some arbritary point in (usually the login screen give or take 10 seconds) and then reboot at random. It's not even a windows crash since I've disabled auto-reboot.I'm not sure what's causing it but I can only presume it's something at the kernel level, since I'm not sure anything else would have the kind of power needed to interfere with the system at an 'outside the OS' level. As such I wouldn't have any idea how to go about fixing it, but I can hope that someone here may be able to point me in the direction of potential settings I can change (probably BIOS I guess) that might aleviate the issue till a fix is found.

Ubuntu :: Recover XP License Key Running?

The Thinkpad came with XP, but the license key has rubbed off. When I received the Thinkpad, it was running Ubuntu only, and I never bothered to investigate re-installing Windows. Basically, I want to recover the license key so I don't have to blow $150 or however much Windows 7 costs these days. Is it possible to recover the Windows XP license key in Linux after Windows has been wiped from the system?
