Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot To Live Cd Intel I830 Dell C400
Jan 9, 2011
I have 5 dell Latitude C400's that I have been trying to install ubuntu 10.10 or Linux mint 10. I cannot seem to get anywhere. Linux mint 10 and ubuntu 10.10 live cd boots a black screen and locks up.
nomodeset and i915.modeset=0 take me to a $ prompt. I have also tried xforcevesa to no avil.
when I try startx from $ prompt i get
(EE) VESA (0): no valid modes
(EE) Screen(s) found, bout none have a usable configuration
Fatal server error: no screens found
I have seen forums that state editing xorg.conf. But I cannot boot to the os to get it installed so I can edit the file.
I just tried 13.1 on my older laptop with an Intel i830 video chipset and X locks the system up hard before even attempting to load the desktop, I seem to recall one of the 12.x versions had a bad intel driver and we had to replace it but my memory isn't good.
I have a Dimension 3000 with 2GB RAM, a 500 GB disk with two, 250 GB partitions, one for XP and one for Linux. The machine has a 1 GB Ethernet expansion card to replace the 10/100 MB integrated Ethernet card. The BIOS was upgraded to A03, the latest version. My initial attempt to boot the Live CD of Kubuntu 10.04.2 32-bit desktop left me with a blank screen, the CD-ROM drive stopped and the hard disk light on. I used the power button reset to re-gain control of the machine. On the next try, I removed the "quiet splash --" from the end of the boot options, and the machine got much further, but did much complaining about sr0 which I believe is a reference to a software RAM drive.
I went through the BIOS setup screen (hit F2 on boot to access) and under "Integrated devices:Network Interface controller" I turned off the built in network interface since the machine is using the plug-in card mentioned above. I also put the floppy disk drive at the end of the "Boot sequence" parameter. I rebooted again with the same deletion of the "quiet splash --" from the end of the boot options and the boot took me to the desktop!
Alas, when I tried to install 10.04.2 from the desktop, the installation died at the 15% point with "[Errno 5] Input/output error". The included explanation pointed at problems with either the hard drive (brand new in my case) or the CD-ROM drive or the CD itself. I'm too tired right now to pursue this further, but I will try burning a new CD at a lower speed as suggested by the error's help information.
I'm also still concerned about the earlier complaints about sr0. It is conceivable that the problem with copying the files to the hard disk could relate to problems with a RAM buffer that is used in the copying process. I mention this to remind myself to pursue that as a possible culprit if re-burning the CD doesn't help.
I'm trying to boot Live Debian (on a usb stick) on a Dell XPS ('Developers Edition' aka 9343). From what I've read about the status of on this hardware [URL] and about Debian Live (https://www.debian.org/CD/live/) it sounds like this may be possible, but I haven't figured it out. I don't know how to deal with the bios &| uefi settings.
I created the boot stick with dd if=debian-live-8.3.0-amd64-mate-desktop+nonfree.iso of=/dev/sdd1 bs=4M; sync
I'm trying to start using Debian Squeeze 64b on my laptop, which is Dell Latitude D830 with Intel i965GM.
After Debian installation, when system should display some nice background and window which please me to log in, I see my screen gets blank, fuzzy, blank again, ...and after several times finaly all hangs. Surprisingly mouse pointer is displayed nicely and works. I can't use network on Debian becouse of windows authorization program which i can run in wine on KDE. This works on Kubuntu.
What I did already:
I installed KUBUNTU 10.04 LTS and it's doing job well.
I installed Debian Squeeze with options:
- enabled:base system, laptop
- disabled:graphical environment
After instalation I logged in on root account and did:
@2: Googling everywhere i found several installation guides pointing to instal pure KDE by installing kde-core package, but it seems Squeeze does not have it.
@3: Unfortunately this command did not install nor update anything.
All I want to do is to install pure Debian with xorg and kde core (not full kde package) for later customization.
I tried to:
- generate xorg.conf (X -configure) and place it at /etc/X11/
- use xorg.conf working for other people in web.
- dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
- googling & forum search for my specific problem and for errors found in syslog; with no working solution.
I have a Dell Dimension 2400 I got at a yard sale. Has the typical 512MB Ram, 80GB Hard Drive, 2.4GHz Celeron and the integrated Intel video and audio. I decided to put Ubuntu 9.10. However I got a Kernal Panic while loading the live CD. It gets to the white flashing Ubuntu Loco. It freezes. The lights on the keyboard flash and it complains of a kernel panic.
Just did a fresh install of F12 on the D600, and a couple of problems. The network was working during the install, but after does not see ethernet nor wireless.
The only straying I did from a default install was to manually create partitions, making one for swap and the rest is / on ext4. Seemed fine installing and booting.
Also the touchpad and mouse settings are messed up, buttons reversed, click events from the touchpad showing "clickdown" but not acting as if the click was released.
ONE BIG COMPLAINT: I see selinux doesn't come with an easy way to disable. How is it disabled with F12?
For now I'm in a hurry, so I'm going back to F11 - past OS installing and booting ok include Ubuntu 8.04, 9.10, F5, F7, F9, F10 and XP to name a few.
My laptop can't boot from cdrom becouse it is broken and it can't boot from USB becouse it has never been able. Ubuntu 8.10 now run in my laptop withgrub 1.I've just try the following trick.1) I put grub4dos in /boot2) I put iso image in /boot3) I add the follwing entrt in source.list
Code: # =========== GRUB4GOS =================================== title == Use grub4dos for the following entries: ==
I swapped the wireless card in my m6400 from a Dell 1510 (Broadcom) to an Intel 5300 and I am trying to get it working. Right now it's not coming up at all. This is a running install of Ubuntu, not a new install, prior to the HW swap the Broadcom worked OK. I've searched all over, but nothing seems to address the specific problem of getting this started.
The laptop is a Dell m6400 with T9800 CPU and 4GB of RAM running 10.10 (2.6.35-22-generic x86_64).

I'm trying to boot my Dell Mini 12 from a USB boot disk with the ubuntu-9.10-alternate-lpia.iso image installed (I've also tried ubuntu-9.10-netbook-remix-i386.iso). I turn the machine on, press F12 to get to the boot menu, then select the USB disk. After this I just get a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen and nothing else happens.
Due to PCI limitations on our server, we are trying to connect a Trandnet TDM=C400 ADSL modem via USB but are not having any luck, as the modem appears not to be recognised.
I set up an array of 2 hhd in raid0 using intel ICH7R, and i have a win7 installed on it. I'd like to have a dual boot with karmic, too. I googled a little bit and i found that it's not so easy as i thought. Are there anyone who's experiencing my same situation?
The disc is fine I have installed using the CD on an Acer Laptop without any trouble what so ever. However now I need to install it on a Dell Latitude D505.It was detected and started the disc and show Ubuntu with the five dots loading screen. And then it goes black, with the laptop on. The menu with options like Install, defect test etc. can't be seen.In response to this I installed it inside Windows and that seemed to be ok, so I restarted the laptop and selected Ubuntu from the boot menu and does the dot loading screen and then black.I have searched Google and it is just threads that end up dead.
I've seen a bit about the display being frozen on intel integrated displays, but I do not see the answer anywhere. Does anyone know how to fix this problem: Ubuntu 9.10 boots and runs just fine for 10, 20 or even 30 minutes performing variety of tasks. Then, without warning the display is frozen. The mouse can move the pointer just fine, but I cannot interact with the desktop and the machine must be shutdown by holding the power button.
I've observed this while playing a Kpatience game, general surfing of the internet, and view ..... videos. One time it happened when the display powers off after being idle, but this is not consistently the case. I have tried to make the freeze happen, but am unable to do so (so it seems, anyway). What is happening here? Here are the details of my system:
I am trying to use JACK for some audio applications, but I have had no success until now I'am using Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Inspiron 6400. Kernel 2.6.32-33.
The following is the QjackCtl log: p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; } 14:38:48.196 Steckfeld deaktiviert. 14:38:48.377 Statistik zurckgesetzt.
I have a new Dell Latitude e5510 with Intel integrated graphics processor in I3, the model should be something like HD mobile Intel GMA integrated graphics (not able to find more precise details even under Windows using everest).
Trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 from livecd this returns me a black screen after I choose to try ubuntu. I already tried to use options as well nolapci nomodeset but without results. The screen lights up the backlight is on and I go into kernel panic because starting to cycle on and off repeatedly icons keypad lock and block number.
I've never tried installing any other operating system on my desktop so I'm not sure if it's a 9.10 bug (probably not), but whenever I choose any of the options after the ubuntu cd has been loaded at startup it goes to a black screen with the underscore at the top, and promptly reboots. At this point in time I can just boot back into windows or get to the same selection screen off of the cd.I've tried burning 3 seperate cd's and at the moment and trying to boot them on my laptop (but not working... hrm). I'm thinking about redownloading the iso in a couple minutes.
I was first shown a blank blue screen with a mouse pointer then back to a text login. At the login prompt it would not accept my keystrokes. Ctrl and backspace showed as a 2 character combination but alphanumeric keystrokes did not show.
I'm using a Dell C610 laptop with 1G of memory and 20G harddrive. I need my computer working so since I didn't have enough disk space for a dual boot I've had to reinstall Windows.
I'm keen to switch to Linux and since I payed for Fedora 11 dvd I'd like to try and get that working before I try another distro.
Ive been trying everything possible, and cant get this Intel card to connect. Here are the details Centos 5.5 Kernel 2.6.18-194.el5 Intel 82577LM Gigabit on dell laptop e6410 Broadband router with gateway 10.54.7.1 My network is 10.54.7.* linux sees the exact card in the configuration utility. If I choose dhcp, and try to bring up teh device, I get "no network, cable unplugged?" error If I configure static ip for eth0 like
10.54.7.2 255.255.0.0 gw 10.54.7.1
The interface will come up (seen in ifconfig) but cant ping the gateway. At one point it did work... I just cant get it back - Ive reinstalled like 4 times... in hopes Id catch something different, no luck. My network serices about 10 pcs many of them centos linux - no problem using static or dhcp with my router- I just got this new laptop and cant get ths card to work.
A friend is trying to rescue some files from his computer because Windows won't boot, so he's making a Live CD. However, he realized that he accidentally downloaded the Intel version of Ubuntu, but he has an AMD processor. Does this matter for a Live session if he's not actually installing anything?
My Mini13 came with hardy preloaded, and it's got pretty messed up since, so I'd like to restore factory OS via a grub entry that looks like this: title System Restore root (hd0,2) chainloader +1 boot
This points to a partition which, when mounted, has this stuff in it: bootfs.img initrd0.img install.sh logo.png syslinux.cfg vmlinuz boot.msg install.cfg ldlinux.sys rootfs.img vesamenu.c32
I'm not a computer, but that looks pretty good to me but when I select this grub option it just says: Boot Error Is there a log or something that might give me more info about the error?
I've been using Linux (Fedora) since 2005 (when I happily abandoned Windows) and loved every minute of it. No installation or other unresolvable problems. But now, I am totally stuck. A month ago, they just gave me a new desktop in the office: Dell Optiplex 960 with the Intel Core 2 Duo vPro chip. So I waited for Fedora 11 to come out, burned the x86-64 Install Media on a DVD, repartitioned the hard drive like I always do on new Windoze machines, and began installing. The install process gets to this announcement and stops:
mounting /tmp as tmpfs... done Then, after a 5-minute wait, if I push the power button on the computer for a hard reboot, then it says:
running install running /sbin/loader and then stalls for good. Then all I can do is hard-reboot again.
So, out of curiosity (and for other reasons), I tried booting the machine from other linux disks: Knoppix, and SystemRescue (www.sysresccd.org). They all stall at different points. The funny thing is that both Fedora 11 x86-64 and SystemRescue happily boot on my personal one-year-old Lenovo T61 Intel Centrino Duo VPro laptop.
I get a feeling that somehow the Intel Core 2 Duo vPro is causing the problem. I also think that there is got to be someone else out there who either had this problem, or was able to install F11 on similar Dell box. Google search did not produce actionalbe answers for me.
I tried to install fedora 12 in my old dell laptop LATITUDE D800. In first boot I get the black screen with
localhost login:
I see several discussions regarding this issues, but I could not resolve the problem. For example, I cannot find system-config-display. This is a fresh installation and there are no other OS in my hard disc.
Now, all of a sudden, after I restarted after a system update, My dell desktop inspiron hangs on boot. The kernel is: 2.6.34.8-68.fc13.i686. Not only that, but the system won't boot for any of the remaining previous kernels.
Partition limit is 4 on my Inspiron 1525 so even with the space available I cannot create a Fedora partition because:
50MB for Dell Diagnostics **GB main vista partition 10GB recovery partition 2.5GB MediaDirect partition
I'm trying to dual boot vista/fedora. I know I can delete the MediaDirect partition but that causes boot problems if the button is pressed while the power is off. I'm not sure which of the 3 Dell Partitions to remove.
My Intel D945GCPE doesn't boot fresh installation of Linux after "under Warranty Replacement" of it. I have tried to install Fedora 9,10, RHEL 5, Zenwalk on dual boot with windows Xp. i.e. First Win XP then Linux.
The Linux Install perfectly but when i reboot after the installation, BIOS tries to detect PXE boot. I have both custom partitioning scheme and Auto-Partitioning on Free unpartitioned space. I have tried this 5 times with the aforesaid distributions, but failure!
In fact I have done the same number of times even earlier but before Board Replacement. Board works perfectly with Win Xp, and 2008 Server.
Hey I have a laptop thats being stubborn and refuses to boot the xubuntu live cd like it cannot read the disc, while it will boot a FreeDos live cd. I can put the xubuntu CD in while in freedos and view it in as the X directory, is there anyway that I can try and boot the live CD from the FreeDOS interface
I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 on an older computer. I figured since it was not that powerful, I'd try running it from the Live CD to see if it was acceptably fast. Of course, I forgot that I had put in a pair of unformatted 40 GB hard drives, so the Live CD didn't like those because there were no file systems to access. So I figured I would just reboot and install it. One problem: my PC acted as if there were no CD in the drive. So I tried a Windows XP CD, but I got the same result.
I reset the configuration data in my BIOS and I set the drives up correctly in there, made sure the boot order was right, and all of that. I was wondering if anyone has experienced something like this before, and if there's anything I can do before I try replacing the CD-ROM drive with another one. Computer info: Gigabyte 7IXE4 mobo with Athlon 1.2 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 2x 40 GB Seagate Barracuda HDs, not sure what the video card is (I'll worry about that one when I get there)
I cannot get past the login screen. I tried entering through it but that fails, it keeps returning me to the login. Is there a generic login for the Live CD to test drive UBUNTU?
