Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install Even When Boot Priority Is Changed?

So I'm brand new to lunix os. I wanted to install xubuntu on a old sony viao laptop so I downloaded the live cd and tried to boot from it. I have changed the boot priority and I can here the cd drive spinning but nothing happens. Also I tried the second option on the installer (install it inside of windows) but I got an error saying I don't have permission.I've also gotten an error saying it cant find the disk but the disk shows up and I can open up/start installation. And I am the admin on the computer. Heres some computers specsWindows xp service pack 31gb of ramIntel Pentium processor 2.4ghz

i've worked with Linux for a while now, but never in a double boot kind of way (except using wubi), and i'm still kind of a newby.i have 2 harddrivesfirst one has only 1 partition; Windows XPsecond one has 1 empty partition, simple storageand another partition where i installed fedora core, and GRUB is also located on this harddrive.I changed harddrive priority to my second harddrive, result:GRUB comes up, no problem, but when I try to boot windows, it tells mentldr is missing ctrl alt del to continueso i changed the harddisk priority back to the way it was, where the first drive containing windows is first priority... but then, no GRUB.i've tried editing the grub conf,i've tried fixboot/fixmbrtl;dr:no ntdlr when linux harddrive is main priorityno grub when windows harddrive is main priority

I have been trying for a couple days now to install 10.04 on a 250G hard drive that was a USB boot with 9.1. I want the hard drive in the case. The bios has been changed and does see the new drive. Boot selection has been changed to CD Rom. Everything starts out fine until step 4 of the install, Prepare partitions. There is no hard drive available on this step. The HDD is not seen by the disk utility either.

i wanted to expand my disc space using an sd card and did this
sudo mv /home/name_of_home_folder home/name_of_home_folder_bk
sudo mkdir /home/name_of_home_folder
sudo mount /dev/sdXX(sd card) /home/name_of_home_folder
after this i cannot boot says cannot boot ,nautilus cant find home folder etc &more after doing alt-ctrl-f1 and doing login i can find my old home folder with all inside the point is how i can change to my old home folder -have to find the solution in order not to do format again i use ubuntu desktop edition on an acer aspire one netbook with ssd 8gb -
as oldfred said have to setup fstab ,i agree i saw some threads with this but how this can be done?

I tried a LIVECD from Artistx: ArtistX - eXtra ordinary art tools Index of /mirrors/artistx And now my computer boots up into a kernel command line screen instead of the GUI type screen where I enter my name and password. Anyone know what this ##$%@ disk changed on my computer and how do I get it back to normal? Fail safe mode boots ok. On the LIVECD disk I selected boot from hard drive which worked but after I turn off my computer and restart, it goes back into that command line sign in screen and stays there.

Whenever I start my PC, the information of 'First Boot device' in BIOS changes from hard disk to CD-Rom. It happens with new start, I mean, if I restart my computer after resetting First boot device to hard disk, then priority does not change. Just as I switch on computer, a black screen appears with the message:
CMOS - checksum error - defaults loaded
press F1 to continue, DEL to enter setup
Recently it used to happen, that PC was not reading my hard disk containing GRUB. I have 2 hard disks. I switched the power cables of two hard disks. After that, both hard disks were shown by BIOS but the above mentioned error started appearing. Also grub takes too much time to load. It takes almost 20 seconds. Earlier I was using 'Puppy Linux'. In that, Grub was loading in fraction of second.

I have few rpm's (proprietary) , I need to give yum group install <group name> and it has to install in a defined order rather going about the rpm's and their dependencies, for example,
Say below is my group install configuration,
For example . what do I require if I wish to have webalizer installed first --> tux second -->> httpd next , customizing group install -package install order like setting customizing the priority,
Is this something that can be achieved by editing/adding in comps.xml or is it something thats set in rpm's when they are build

If there are e.g. multiple repositories with the same prio, which contain different versions of an RPM. What happens if an install is made and a particular package has a dependency, where no version is specified? Would all repositories of the same pri be searched and the newest RPM version be installed. OR Would simply once the RPM is found in one of those pri's simply be taken and no further searching made. So summarized when all repositories are the same priority, is the first found RPM taken or the RPM with the latest version?

YaST2 -> Package -> All Packages -> Update if Newer Available that YaST would install the most current in the highest priority repository. Given the example data below, I thought package A, version 01, which is currently installed from repository abc, would be updated to version 02 from repository xyz.
How do you get YaST to update packages from the highest priority repository?

[URL] and instead of a fat32 I added a ntfs 2 tb hd to my computer. But it doesnt like it, so now when I boot I get
init: ureadahead-other main process (1234) terminated with status 4
I searched and people are mentioning logging into the terminal and what not, but I cant get to a terminal so that kind of silly. People also talking about updating their video cards for this issue, which also is not my problem.

Long story short, I changed these BIOS settings (and changed them back), but now Ubuntu won't boot: SATA RAID/AHCI Mode: from Disabled to AHCI
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctlr Mode: from IDE to AHCIThe last thing it says is "Init: ureadahead-other main process (nnn) terminated with status 4". Booting off an Ubuntu CD and entering Rescue mode gets me to a shell; the file systems are still there, but Reward for first solution (other than reload): $10 Starbucks card!

I recently installed my first distro, Gnome Ubuntu Linux 10.04 via WUBI dual-booting alongside my Windows. I decided to try the other desktop environments. So I installed Kubuntu-Desktop (KDE) and Xubuntu-Desktop (XFCE) using Synaptic Package Manager.
However, Kubuntu KDE changed the boot splash screen into a from the default Ubuntu one, to the Kubuntu one. Also Xubuntu XFCE changed the log-in screen to the Xubuntu one. I DO NOT want these changes. I just wanted Normal Ubuntu-branded Ubuntu Linux with the option of logging in into the desktop environment of my choice.

I'm running Kubuntu, but after trying an Ubuntu tool to help configure Grub, my boot up plash screen (xsplash? My card isn't KMS compliant, so I'm not using Plymouth) now shows the Ubuntu splash.
Anyone know how to switch which boot splash is used back?

I just installed windows 7 and ubuntu stopped booting even though it was still there, so I thought I would just change the partition flag to boot. I found out later that I had to create a new mbr but after I changed the boot flag, windows 7 stopped booting and I tried changing it back, but it didnt work. So I was wondering if i didn't use the correct flags or is there another way to get windows 7 to boot again? I was using GParted to change the partition flags and that i am using windows 7 ultimate 64bit

I'm trying to create an script so that the mac address get changed at the boot for every interface in the computer (eth0, wlan0, etc...).

I'm running 64bit Lucid. I've recently had a severe problem with my softraid (5) array, and have had to recreate the array to fix it. However this now means that something is up with GRUB/initramfs, and booting times out while waiting for the root device (md0) to be ready. /boot is on a normal partition, not the raid array itself. A friend of mine has rebuilt my initramfs file with the new UUID, but now I get the message: 'Kernel panic not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (9,0)'.So my question is either how do I sort this error, OR how do I rebuild initramfs/grub in a way that will boot?

I installed the ATI Catalyst drivers for my laptop and I guess they are working since World of Warcraft and other graphic dependent programs are working, but the problem is my boot up screen is really ugly now. Instead of the Fedora drop filling up I get a bar at the bottom of the screen that fills up. This happens only after installing the Catalyst drivers how do I change it back to the drop? This is the only issue I'm having.
Fedora 15 x64 is my operating system.

I have a 1TB hard drive which is formatted with FAT32. Attempting to make a new partition I clicked the format drive button in Disc Utility. I chose Master Boot Record and something was written to the drive. So now I can't mount the drive and Disc Utility says that there aren't any partitions. I don't think this can be true because I had 200 GB of data on the drive and it would have taken longer to delete all that. At least I think...

Can Ubuntu install and boot from external HD while still booting windows off internal HD?In an attempt to spread Ubuntu my friend wants to use ubuntu off an external HD and still have windows fully operational on the internal HD. I am trying to install Ubuntu on a machine that already has Windows 7 on one partition. Obviously I intend to install it on the other free partition. So I downloaded the iso burnt it onto the disk and pop in the disk and the boot the machine. The installation screen comes up I selected the first option (Try Ubuntu without installation), I just see a prompt after a few seconds and then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. Unable to detect a signal, The monitor goes into standby. The same thing happens if I use "install Ubuntu" option as well. I downloaded minimal install version Ubuntu and tried to install with that. since its old school installation, the installation completed without any errors, but when I restart the grub come up and when I select to boot into Ubuntu, I see the same behavior i.e. the screen goes blank and never boots to anything. This is a machine on which I was using 10.4 until yesterday.

After installing the nvidia drivers and rebooting my theme changed to an ugly gray theme. Changing the theme in the System>Preferences>Appearance only changes the window title bars but everything else stays in this ugly gray theme.
The drivers are installed and working (visual effects work).
I also updated everything from the Update Manager before rebooting. Also this is a brand new install. Only changes are from the Update Manager and the Driver utility. Every thing looked fine before I rebooted (default ubuntu 10.10 theme)
How can I get rid of the this gray theme?
Also I am new to ubuntu, mainly use GUIs to set things up. I'm not afraid of the terminal, but I just don't know my way around the Linux file system yet.

I have never seen this before wit any previous versions of ubuntu - wondering if anyone else has seen it or can explain it. The break down of the partition table is being viewed with Ranish Partition v2.43 It's old program, but it has been really handy.
What is happening is: Prior to the install of ubuntu on the 3rd Primary partition, you'll see that the 4th partition (which has a couple of logical partitions in it) starts at: (14,380 - 0 - 1) ===> Cylinder - Head - Sector After the installation of Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS it shows a Non-conventional start point of: (14,380 - 0 - 62) =====> Cylinder - Head - Sector. An unused is left between the 3rd and 4th Primary partition.
This is not a big deal - just unusual (IMO) With the same partition layout (pre install) It doesn't matter if I install ubuntu on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd primary partition. The 4th one ALWAYS gets changed this way.

I've just tried to install freepascal [URL] on CentOS 5 using 'yum install fpc', and it installed package fpc-2.2.2-3.el5.1.i386. Since official stable version of freepascal is 2.2.4 (and version 2.4 will soon be released as new stable version), is it possible to update "official" freepascal in CentOS 5 repository to 2.2.4 (and later possibly to 2.4) ? I've read somewhere (wiki or website or some other place), that CentOS wont have php 5.2.5 because official CentOS repositories are never changed. Does this also apply to other software (like freepascal)?

I'm having an issue with dual networking on RHEL 5. My initial question is can the order the ethx (0,1) devices are brought up be changed at boot time, so I could bring up eth1 before eth0?
Some background: eth0 is DHCP'd and using DNS, basically this is my primary network. eth1 is an isolated subnet, with a manually configured IP which has no connection to eth0 or the outside world. When I bring up networking it first brings up eth0 and then eth1, what happens is eth1 becomes the 'primary' network of the host and I lose my connection to DNS/NFS/NIS and the outside world.
If I login and manually bring up eth1 first, then eth0 everyone is happy and connections work. So, I'm looking for a solution to either bring up eth1 before eth0 or somehow make eth0 my primary IP and not have it be clobbered by eth1.

Ubunto 8.4, running on 2nd partition on Apple Intel iMac. Several months ago, following a routine update, I found I could no longer install routine updates. Investigating further, I find
"You don't have permissions to..."
then sudo: /etc/sudoers is owned by gid 1002, should be 0.
That's not me! I am the owner and root user of this computer. How could this get changed? How can I change it back to me? The Linux platform of the computer has not been exposed to the net except for Ubuntu forums and updates. No one else has used this computer.

I tried to install 11.3 on my acer aspire 7530 notebook to have dual boot with xp.
I made 4 partitions: one for xp, and the three for linux were made automatically.Before installation I got the warning that the partition wasn't entirely below 128 gb, I installed anyway to give it a try.
The installation froze at 92% and after the laptop wouldn't boot.
Now I've formatted the hard disk and installed windows on a partition leaving a free un formatted partition of 100 gb.
