I Installed eclipse in my ubuntu 11.04 version via its soiftware center. but now i have to format my machine due to some disk space changing requirements. my problem is how to backup my eclipse installation in other destination.because it gets lot of time to install via my broadband internet package. what folders i moved for that purpose.?

Example: server1.foo.com has / , /boot , swap and few LVM partitions. All are in /dev/sda disk of size 80GB. /dev/sda5 is a LVM partition which has only one vg00 and it has 2 LV's (/var and /usr) and a SAN storage connected to this server which has around 500GB of single partition(a LV partition) called /data and its under vg00 .
Now I have build another server called "server2.foo.com" with same RedHat OS version - RHEL 4 and want to import the same LVM setup at destination. Down time or unmounting the filesystem is not a problem (but am trying to reduce the down time as much as possible). Is there any way that I can take a proper snapshot of whole LVM disk and restore with same setup at destination without losing the data and the lvm file system layout?
I'm currently learning to use rsync to backup my music collection. I have a Firefox tab open to the rsync manual page(s) and have been reading man rsync and running experimental rsync operations.I've been doing this for the last 3-4 hours. I've used rsync for this purpose in the past with disastrous results. What was and is once again (due to a month and a half of file pruning) a 9000 file music collection had mysteriously grown to over 25,000 music files and 80GB of data! This was likely due to the fact that I didn't really know what I was doing with rsync and had never spent too much time learning about all the parameters, what their functions are and how they may relate to my goal.Here are the particulars:
* Source drive is a 500GB disk, /media/sata500/music/.
* Destination drive is a 250GB USB disk, /media/FreeAgent/music, connected to the same computer that houses the 500GB disk.
* I want to copy or backup files from /media/sata500/music to /media/FreeAgent/music.
* I do not want to create ANY duplicates of files that exist.
* I only want to add files to the destination drive if they are new on the source drive, like if I rip a CD and add the contents to the source. I want them copied over next time I run rsync.
Here's the rsync command in it's most recently used form, and probably very immature at this point.

This appears to have copied all files and folders and I'm satisfied that my goal has been met with some success. To convince myself of this I ran the command and then once it was complete I added 2 new songs putting them in their respective folders on the source drive and ran the same command again. Two files transferred. Exactly what I want.Both folders now house 20,931 files and use 40.6GB. Identical as far as I can tell.What I'm concerned about are time stamps and play count data, etc. Anything that changes the original file. I don't want this data to cause a file to be transferred as I'm afraid that the new file will be created along side the old file of the same name thereby starting this whole music collection expansion thing all over again. I've invested a lot of time and effort to get it pruned down to where there are virtually no duplicates and albums are correct in that they contain the proper songs in the proper order.

I wish to use the new Eclipse Galileo, and so far it works fine... out of my home directory.I would like to install this system-wide, so that all my users can use it just the same.I assume the destination would be /usr/local/bin, but when I put the directory there and link the executable as /usr/local/bin/eclipse (linking to /usr/local/bin/eclipse_bin/eclipse), I get shared library errors.This was a failed attempt at a hack, so I would like to know: where can I put the files so as to properly do this installation?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed eclipse galileo a long time back and used pydev plug-in for development. i wanted to install the java plug-in for but could not install it. My friend gave me his eclipse folder (eclipse helios) which contained the java plug-ins, i thought copying those plug-ins to the /usr/lib/eclipse/plugins directory and assumed that it would work. though it did, but my eclipse galileo was now eclipse helios and took really very long time to startup. I completely removed the eclipse and other dependencies using synaptic. (also deleted all the plug-in files from the /usr/lib/elcipse/plugin directory). I reinstalled eclipse and now on starting eclipse i get the following error. the error msg tells me to view the error log file in the /usr/lib/eclipse/configuration/xxxxxx.log

I upgraded from F11 to F12 and everything seemed to be working until I went into my Eclipse IDE. Several things stopped working, icons in the "New" sub-menu items disappeared and when I activated wizards and added items like a new text file, I was unable to complete the creation of the file. If I try to "Save-as" the file to a file named create_products.sql pressing the "OK" button does nothing. This seems to be true of all of the wizards when you try to write out the changes, nothing happens. All these wizards worked correctly under F11. The Eclipse IDE is installed in my /home/user/Application/eclipse directory and was left in tac after the upgrade. Does this mean I need to do a full install and if so will restoring my home directory just result in the same problems? [URL]. Seems that there is a problem with eclipse 3.5.1 and F12 regarding mouse click capture.

I have been using Eclipse to program in Java for a long time, and have been using Jigloo for most of my GUI design. Recently I decided to try out the C/C++ plugin. I tried installing it, but it did not work. After many attempts, I finally gave up. However, after uninstalling it I found that Jigloo had stopped working. Any other plugins I try to install now also don't work. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling plugins, and reinstalling eclipse, but nothing I have done fixes it. Although eclipse says that the software has been installed, nothing shows up in the features list or the plugins list.
Another problem: When I install eclipse from the repositories, it doesn't install a bunch of libraries and eclipse cannot recognize standard java files.
I have some backups from Ubuntu 6.06 that I want to put it back in Ubuntu 9.10. How do I do that? When I connect the flash drive, it lights up, but doesn't show up.

-Keyboard Shortcuts
-Power Management
-Sound
-Keyboard Layout settings.
I know I could have /home on another partition, but I'd rather backup only the settings I mentioned above, and have the rest of my /home cleaned.

I have been using Ubuntu for a while now though not heavily. I want to try out the new 10.04 as I was not all that happy with 9.10. I would like to backup my entire Ubuntu System so if the upgrade goes south like it probably will and has every time in the past that I can restore it easily. Now in Windows I would use either Paragon Backup or Comodo Backup. So, I was wondering if there is a complete backup system like this for Linux. I have looked at several, but most only back up the home directory or specific directories.

i m using ubuntu since past three months. i installed many packages, softwares and libraries. i was wondering if something wrong happens and i have to format my whole drive containing ubuntu, is there a way that i can backup all my packages and softwares.
i tried to look at the /var/cache/apt/archives as it contains setup of all the packages that i installed using apt-get package manager. i tried to copy and save them, but now i was thinking that during a single package installation it installs many libraries used to support that applications. so i think this copying method will not work.
I want to ask you if i can backup with clonezilla only /home sda3 directory. And to backup sda1 and Linux Swap with another program as Acronis and then to restore the sda1 and Linux Swap With Acronis on a formated Hdd and restore then /home with Clonezilla. Is this capable?
