Ubuntu Installation :: Using LibreOffice PPA And BiBus Reference Manager?
Dec 15, 2010
If I'm using OpenOffice 3.1 and wish to use the/a PPA for the upgrade of OpenOffice 3.1 to LibreOffice 3.3; is there any solution using a PPA? Secondly, If not, is it possible to install (from the installer downloaded on the LibreOffice website) LibreOffice in the same location as OpenOffice is/was installed? (I think I'd be safest to uninstall OO before installing LO). In other words, where does LibreOffice install? The reason I ask is because I'd like to continue using BiBus Reference Manager and it has specific location requirements.

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 and trying to learn the new Unity environment. Bibus is a reference manager which I used with great pleasure for sometime. It was perfect in terms of inserting and formating references to openoffice-writer.Now, with 11.04 Unity environment Bibus can insert references to Libreoffice-writer but can not change reference styles. Once I log out and re-enter with ubuntu-classic environment I see that Bibus is working perfectly in Gnome desktop of 11.04.In the Unity desktop I have to run Bibus as root to change styles and change reference formats. Why Bibus can not change styles and format references in Unity environment unless having root privileges?

I was trying to load up Ubuntu 9.10 on a thumb drive to load look at the files on a computer with a dead disk drive, I couldnt boot up on the other computer, but thats another story (yes the drive was marked as bootable)
When I restart my laptop whose diskdrive I used to install Ubuntu onto the USB drive, I get a GRUB error No such device and can load anything unless I plug back in the USB drive. When it is plugged in, the USB boot is the primary (1st in the list) boot. I tried editing the .lst file on my laptops drive but it only has its kernels listed. Anyone know how to make my system quit looking for a USB mounted kernel? Or at least not fail if it can't find one.

I installed Libreoffice on my Ubuntu 10.10 (through wubi), and uninstalled Openoffice afterwards. Everything's ok. But then I continue to receive updates for openoffice modules (which are a lot btw). From the Software Center, currently installed are libreoffice modules together with (I think) their openoffice counterparts. Now the question is, is it safe to remove the openoffice modules? Or does Libreoffice need them, too? How do I remove them completely from the updates?

I think it's because I had the beta of LibreOffice first and then I upgraded to the final release (3.3). Now it just looks like MS Word 2003 running on Windows 98.
I might sound picky, but it looked better for me with the RC version.[URL]..

Is it possible to install Debian 8.2 lxde WITHOUT Libreoffice? I have successfully installed it on an eeepc with a 4 gb ssd
But then removed Libreoffice to have room for files.
It works great! It would be nice to just install Debian lxde without Libreoffice, which I do not use, I prefer gnumeric and vim.

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Using Karmic, want to "upgrade" OpenOffice 3.1 to LibreOffice 3.3.Should I uninstall OO 3.1 and install LO 3.3, or should I try to install over-top of existing OO 3.1?

Peering into gconf-editor, I noticed that under desktop>gnome>background the picture_filename is the original warty that comes pre-installed on karmic. However, I am not using that BG, instead one that i told the Appearance Preference manager to find and use. Does this app use a symbolic link to refer to the image, or is it elsewhere? Lookin in /usr/share/backgrounds my image does not exist. So what is drawing the BG? Is it nautilus or compiz?

Just bought a new accounting program BasicBooks - on the install instructions (Gibberish to me) I apparently must have Postgres installed, which apparently comes with most distros. I can't find a reference to Postgres - there should be an entry in 'System Settings --> Server Settings --> Services from the main system menu', which I cannot find. Nor can I find it in the Ubuntu software centre. I did find pgAdmin III but have no idea how this works either.

I have 3 pc's - Carol running Fedora 12, Vince running Fedora 12 and blue running Fedora 13. I am trying to use NFS to share the files. I can't seem to figure out how to reference the PC's. Attempts to mount the shares exported using /etc/exports either can't find the node if I use Vince:/... If I use Vince.localdomain:/.. it times out. I tried to use telnet blue and got telnet: blue: Name or service not known blue: Unknown host Tried telnet blue.localdoamin and got Trying 208.68.139.89...
blue's IP is 192.168.1.104 I was hoping I could use names and not explicit IP addresses as those might change if the Linksys router has to reboot or something.

I am trying to learn about macros in libreoffice. In order to see the methods and properties of the different objects, people in the openoffice forums recommend using the MRI library.
I can not find any reference to the MRI extension in fedora. Does anyone know how to find it, or what to use instead?
