Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Fault?

Nov 28, 2010

I have a small alert sign in my notification area from update manager... I created the fault myself, which was very stupid and now i don't know how to fix it.It says:Failed to download repository information[URL], E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. What i did wrong, because i know only very little about ubuntu, was: I was trying to ad another software source in Software center - edit - software sources -other software... And then by trying to delete what i added, because i was just playing around i think i deleted something else as well.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager / Software Sources / Synaptic Package Manager Not Working?

Sep 30, 2010

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.

I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? Ubuntu :: Segmentation Fault After Update When In VMware

Oct 3, 2010

I have been a Windows user for many years but heard lots of good things about Ubuntu and wanted to give it a shot. I have a VMware ESXi 4.1 server so I created a new VM (Ubuntu desktop 32-bit), downloaded the Ubuntu 10.4 32-bit desktop image, mounted it, and started the installation. Everything worked fine and I got a working Ubuntu system. I created a snapshot just in case I need to get back to this position.

I then saw a prompt from Update Manager and decided to update everything it told me to, which is 300 updates. At the end, I was asked to restart and I did. At that point, the system was not willing to start again. Here is what I get (... stands for omitted text):

Segmentation Fault
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- check root delay ...
- check root ....

[Code]....

I have no clue what to do at this point. I tried going back to the snapshot a few times but always ended up in the same state after installing updates. I tried installing VMware tools before the running the update but it didn't make a difference.
