I let the updater change my menu.lst file in Jaunty. It reported an error but I had no problems until I noticed Windows XP was gone. I rarely use it but now I am teaching a computer class on how to use Widows so I have to fix it tonight.
The system is a Dell 531 with 2 gigs of ram and 2 drives.There are 2 menu.lst files in Grub , menu.lst and menu.lst~ . Is the one with the ~ after it the backup? If so how do you restore it?
I have an old Dell Latitude D600 running Windows XP Pro. A couple of days ago, I installed Ubuntu on it using the Windows installer, so that I could choose between Ubuntu and XP at boot time. That's been working great.Today, I read about Jolicloud and decided to try it. I assumed (bad move!) that it would add itself to my list of choices at boot time, so that I could choose between Ubuntu, XP, and Jolicloud.Well, instead, I can now choose between Jolicloud and XP. Ubuntu has vanished from the boot menu.Is my Ubuntu installation gone? Or is simply a GRUB issue? Or an MBR issue? Is there any way for me to get back to my Ubuntu installation??? I had important work on there that I would like to recover!

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop before. Then I had wiped it and put Windows 7 and now I wiped and want to install Ubuntu again.
Some days ago I decided to reinstall windows, of course windows wiped Grub of the MBR. No problem. I booted of the live CD (9.10) and tried to reinstall grub, I had Ubuntu 9.10 installed before windows wiped grub. sda3 is my root partition, sda2 is the partition where all my media files are located. I mounted /dev/sda3 to /media/root and then I tried to reinstall grub with: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/root /dev/sda It came out with no errors, and then I restarted my computer. Grub started, but with a command line. It was the 1,97 beta-4 version. Since I'm quite unfamiliar with GRUB (or really technical linux stuff)
So I was installing 10.10 to be my only operating system on my 3 year old custom built computer and all of a sudden it stopped working at the point of "whenever you are ready" but not letting me go forward because it still was loading. I waited a long time and it was frozen so I restarted my computer and now I don't have anything on it. No operating system at all. Except the symbol " _ " blinking rapidly. Nothing is working and I just want to run 10 on my desktop

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to properly install Unbuntu on my multi boot pc. I would like to install to E partition which is currently ntfs. I have never installed Linux. What drive should the boot loader go? I can format E partition during install? Does it still need a swap file partition? If so, can that be made from E partition? How big? I'd like to have a boot menu to choose Ubuntu or a choice that takes me to the windows boot loader. Would that boot loader get wiped if I did a fresh install of 7 to the I drive? Also, what would be the proper way to upgrade Ubuntu? I see a lot of post where people are doing it wrong.
Here is my drives layout. Should install Ubuntu to my SSD J drive instead? I tried the live CD. Seems to work well. I have a Asus Max Formula MB, Phenom II 6core, ATI 4870. MB has a built in Via sound card. Not sure if that was working.
This is my first time using Fedora. My previous experience is from Ubuntu. However I want to give a try for Fedora so I went ahead to install it on my new computer. Problem is that Fedora Installer (Live CD) wiped out my NTFS Partition. Causing my computer unable to recover Vista from factory DVD because it lost system partition as well. I want to know if this is my error or a bug in installer.
Original partition setup:
220 GB - Vista System Partition (NTFS)
14 GB - Recovery Partition (NTFS)
First I resized system partition under Windows Management in Vista:
170 GB - System
50 GB - Unallocated
14 GB - Recovery
Using GParted from Ubuntu 9.04 Live CD, moved recovery to the left:
170 GB - System
14 GB - Recovery
50 GB - Unallocated
Rebooted into Vista, make sure everything is fine. Then put in FC 11 Live CD, using custom layout setup in partition, intended partition layout is:
170 GB - System (NTFS) - Primary sda1
14 GB - Recovery (NTFS) - Primary sda2
200 MB - /boot (ext3) - Primary sda3
sda4 - Extended Partition
45.8 GB - / (ext4) - sda5
4 GB - swap - sda6
After I check my setup and pressed enter, it returned with unable to format /boot error: -1. Restart FC installer, it tells me that my hard drive needs to be re-initialized. I clicked no and reboot. BIOS tells me that no OS is found. Attempting to recover from factory DVD failed, telling me that system partition is gone. I want to know did I do something wrong or is this a bug in FC installer.
Was using preupgrade from FC11x64 to 12x64. Preupgrade caused alot of problems like /boot not enough diskspace. After some searching found the steps and preupgrade proceed happily but after reboot got kernel panic grrr.
Took 3 days to find another machine to download and burn the FC12x64 disk. So I booted via the FC12x64 disk and selected the 1st option to install/upgrade. I thought it is upgrade and so choose replace my existing linux system however it wiped out everything on the disk. I have some important data in my home directory. I think it is in LVM, not a partition like /dev/sda1. How can I recover them? Was using stock settings.

I am having issues with Grub 2 after installing Debian 7.8.0.The computer is a HP Pavilion 500-307nb. I made the original harddrive /dev/sdb and inserted a Samsung Evo 840 as /dev/sda. From the original hard drive (/dev/sdb), I wiped the windows partition, but left all other partitions unchanged (in case I would ever want to recover the desktop to its original state). I replaced the wiped windows partition with a swap partition and an LVM partition.These are my hard drive partitions:

The partition /dev/sda3 has 2 logical volumes with filesystem ext4 that I mount to / and /home.The partition /dev/sda2 is mounted to /boot..When I install like this, Debian installs fine, however Grub2 is not installed correctly.Debian installs grub-pc which seems not able to boot the gpt partition. So I boot the Debian CD in rescue mode and execute:
mount /dev/sda2 /boot
aptitude purge grub-pc
aptitude -y install grub-efi
After rebooting, I come in the grub rescue shell, which says: error: no such device: 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7.
When I then enter in the grub rescue shell:
set boot=(hd0,gpt2)
set prefix=(hd0,gpt2)/grub
insmod normal
normal
Grub and Debian start up correctly.why can Grub not start up automatically correctly? Where does the UUID 986f2176--4a4b-4222-83b9-8636a034b3c7 come from? I have reinstalled Grub several times, I have reinstall Debian several times, I have even wiped all partitions from /dev/sda and recreated a new gpt table with parted and manually set the partitions in parted. Still on each reinstallation, Grub fails because it cannot find exactly the same UUID. Since this UUID is always the same, it must be stored somewhere, but it cannot be the partitions, I have wiped them and the partition table several times.
I did though a firmware update of the Samsung Evo 840 before reinstallation, could this be a cause?Also the problem is not in grub.cfg. Grub starts correctly if I enter the commands above in the grub rescue screen and the UUID value does not appear there.
As with almost every time I try to simultaneously install two operating systems, I have incurred the wrath of GRUB. It's probably more to do with my laptop's terrible hard drive, but here's my problem: I had a 9.10 install and a swap space on this hard drive, then I used GParted from the BT live CD to resize shrink the Ubuntu partition to make space for a BT install. I booted into Ubuntu just to make sure it was working fine. it was. Then I went back in to the BT live CD to install it on the free space.
When I booted up after install, the GRUB screen had changed (obviously), but now only the BT installation (which appeared as Ubuntu 8.10 for some reason) would boot, The previous Ubuntu installs had stopped working, and now came up with "file missing" or "file not found" (cant remember). I tried fsck -v /dev/hda1 (where my 9.10 installation was), and it didn't seem to have any errors. What's wrong with my computer (or GRUB)?
I've just installed Windows 7 in a separate partition to play with. Trouble is, it's wiped out GRUB. I was expecting this and I know last time this happened it was easy to fix. The forum serch found a thread with 3 ways to re-install GRUB. I've tried each, and none have wored. Methods I've tried
1) The aptitude install grub-pc command ran and said it had worked correctly. On re-bootong, Windows started without any GRUB screens on the way.
2) The chroot method stated it installed correctly after raising a few warnings - after I used the --force command, as the install failed without it. Again, reboot and get Windows without a GRUB screen...
3) Normal grub-install command (no chroot). This went as per the chroot command.
From where I'm sat, it looks like I'll have to do a clean Linux re-install on the disk and then restore my linux files again from a back-up - something I'm not particularly over-joyed by the prospect of...
occurring seemingly randomly, every once in a while I open a pdf and find out that all my custom settings (toolbar buttons, etc.) have been wiped out. Also, as soon as I open the pdf I'm asked to accept the licence, that I had previously accepted.It's about the second time it happens in about a week. My acrobat version is 9.3.4.

The Laptop is an Acer and the Win 7 disks go into a propitiatory recovery screen. I have 3 choices reload Win 7 to new state, Load Win 7 and put everything in backup or Exit.
I have loaded the Ubuntu 10:10 Live and downloaded ms-sys. The problem is Ubuntu is unable to mount the HDD - not in fstab.
I have Ubuntu and Win 7 on the HDD.
I have connected to my friends machine, for some reason . all the logs are wiped out . ?

I was messing around with vipw and accidentally wiped the whole file. Luckily, I have a backup copy.Is it safe to just paste the backup into any old file and "cp <file> /etc/passwd", or is there any special procedure?As I understand it, things are fine for now but if I restart very bad things will happen since root is gone and such
View 8 Replies View RelatedI accidentally wiped my mounted c drive with rm /media/MY_C_DRIVE/ -r (The actual path is /media/51FAEE1F4B26FD12/ - that's why I wasn't aware of it). After 3 seconds I realized that I just did something terribly wrong. I hit Ctrl+C to stop but it was too late. The important system files were gone and I couldn't boot into windows. So far, I have tried to recover the files with photorec. I could recover about 68,000 files from that c drive but the names are f000001.exe, f000002.txt, f000003.jpg,. I don't know what these files are and where to put them back. Is there any way to recover these system files?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed a new evga nVidia GT 430 video card in my Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit system. This had the unforseen side effect of eliminating my sound.
I had no idea that the new video card would include a new sound module. My intent is for my system to use my Soundblaster Audigy2 soundcard in 5.1 output mode. The system still seems to be configured to do that, but the nVidia HDMI Stereo output module seems to have taken over in Sound Preferences.

i was using 10.10 and this disaster occured when i tried to install 11.04 replacing 10.10. i have a separate home partition, while installing 11.04 i chose one weird option called "encrypt home partition"i didnt chose to format the home partition but once the installation is over, i have all my data lost in home directory.Is ther any chance that i could get the 165 gb junk data or atleast some 200 mb of important data

Got the warranty because I have 4 kids and something is bound to be dropped, spilled or smashed at some point. True to my visions, something did get dropped smashed and spilled, and pennies got stuck in the dvd slot. So I took it in when the screen stopped coming on because of a loose connection in the hinge and they did apparently fix that problem, but also were benevolent enough to wipe out my entire hard drive, operating sytem and all, totally free of charge. I guess they figured since I like accidents so much, I would just LOVE having 18 months of data and programs disappear into thin air. I know all about how I should have backed it up, and I am not whining too much over this. I will roll with the punches. But there are just a FEW things on that hard drive I will really miss. Like a few crucial spreadsheets that I was not able to save to my external drive before the screen went south. Now that windows 7, I am not planning on missing at all. In fact I am loving running my new Ubuntu 11.04 from my usb and knowing that those idiots will not be able to screw this one up next time. But I would really like to be able to recover those files if I can. Is there any way to get those back? And I also cannot figure out how to find device manager. Do I have to install to hard drive to use that? I know these are all probably total newbie questions. But hey, i got here as soon as I could. Everybody has got to start somewhere.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had to run sudo fsck /dev/sda8 on a partition through ubuntu liveCD since ubuntu 10.10 would not start up.I ran sudo fsck (without arguments) and I must have erased something in error (there was a stream of errors) because when I rebooted ubuntu .. my Thunderbird inbox had been cleared .. erased.I've still got inbound emails archived on my pop server so I can download those again .. but I've lost outgoing emails sent from my Thunderbird client.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a 500 GB hard drive connected via a SATA/USB adapter. After connecting it, I did a basic format of the drive with no problem. I then attempted the "Wipe Free Space" option under the File menu in BleachBit, selecting the external drive, and it began the process. It gives me a time estimate of about 300 minutes, but, instead, after a few minutes it says "Done" and gives me the message "[Errno 27] File too large. Disk space recovered: 0 Files recovered: 0 Errors: 1"
What happened? What do I need to do to get this volume wiped?
I had Ubuntu 8.04 installed on server#1 and moved it to server#2. Everything works fine, including the changing of eth2/3 back to eth0/1. I was wondering if it's possible to use the nvidia onboard raid and make a raid 1 with this OS not getting wiped out. It's a bios level cheesy raid and it warns that it's erasing the data (which is didn't erase), but wont boot anyway. I'm assuming it's probably best to just create a software raid in the working OS with a fresh 2nd drive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI realise that this is not a pure Linux Q, but I am hoping for tolerance and even help!After removing the partitions (/,/home) that held an older Linux installation, gparted showed the original Windows XP partition followed by the new unallocated space. On rebooting, there was a Grub rescue error (text not noted, sorry). A live install running gparted shows a totally empty disk!
The removed OS was booted via Grub2 and I imagine that it is choking when there is no secondary(?) file to be found since it was vaped. I also imagine that this is a fairly straight-forward matter, something like replacing the MBR but I am so far from Windows these days that I am unsure how to progress with rescuing the partition. The machine has no floppy - that's how I would have initially booted it way back when. Is this something that I can do either through a Linux live distro or via a Windows CD?
i am multi booting with another operating system that doesn't boot on a pc and requires a special bootloader to make it work, but before i can install that bootloader which will overwrite grub on the mbr. how do i install grub on the hard drive so that the special bootloader will exist and will recognize grub and boot Ubuntu from the hard drive instead of the mbr can this be done with the ubuntu live cd. remember i am installing grub on the hard drive, not the mbr and it's grub2
View 7 Replies View RelatedA bad install of linux gave me a grub that won't go away. My only hope of restoring my Windows XP and retrieving the data that was backed up (most wasn't) is to somehow access the recovery partition. That's still there. The primary partition was wiped out. This is a remanufactured system: I -don't- have a Windows CD. I -don't- have fdisk. I -don't- have any of the utility disks I'd normally use (they're 300 miles away, buried in snow and ice right now).
I do have a disk and a thumb drive with the Windows boot files on it, but grub doesn't recognize these. If I could just get rid of that grub file, I think I could boot from either the thumb drive or the cd, or even the partition with the recovery files on it, but I can't get rid of grub. I think even if I could get fdisk on either a cd or thumb drive, grub would override it. Any one know how to kill that file WITHOUT fdisk and WITHOUT the Windows CD? I have live Linux disks, Ubuntu 8.10 and 10.10 have been the most promising, but still can't do this.
