Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot 10.04 Or 10.10

Nov 25, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a PC for my nephew and carried out all the updates. Then I hit a daft streak and decided to upgrade it to 10.10. Everything went OK until I rebooted the PC when all that happened was the LEDs on the monitor started to flash on and off in unison. Booting into a live session had the same result.

Re-install 10.04 would be a sensible option but when I tried to do this and later on 9.10, all I got was 'error: no such device' It does display Ubuntu Linux 2.6.31-14-generic and the recovery mode + a memory check option but when I select the default highlighted option that is when I get this error message. I've also tried to reformat the drive by putting in an XP disc but after installing Ubuntu the result is the same. If ever there was a case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' this is it. So what do the flashing LEDs mean and how can I fix the broken boot part of the system?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot On Dual-boot XP After Recovering Windows Bootloader?

Jul 18, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows XP installed on my laptop. Usually when booting, I get the GRUB 2 menu and I can boot into either Ubuntu or XP.I was playing around with EasyBCD, then after trying to remove it I was unable to boot into Windows, I used a Windows 2000 CD recovery console to fix the MBR (using: fixboot and fixmbr). Now Windows starts up when I power on, but I don't get the grub menu anymore with an Ubuntu option. If I boot from the Ubuntu Live CD and try to mount my Ubuntu partition (/dev/sda5) I get this error:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda5,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 - Dual Boot Karmic / Unable To Boot Into Archlinux Partition

After installing karmic with Grub2 I am unable to boot into Archlinux partition. Grub2 has removed the last line of the Archlinux boot stanza! It used to read:-

Following the Grub2 tutorials I have tried editing /etc/grub.d/40_custom as follows:-

But no luck. Only way into Archlinux is to get into the edit shell and manually add the missing line and remove other stuff not needed. I have spent hours trying to resolve this issue and I am fairly p----d off

General :: Unable To Boot Into Windows Vista Installation And Only Boot Fedora

Jan 28, 2010

Having a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:

0x0000007B (0x80399BB0, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.

So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).

As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. As per another online guide, I tried:

Ubuntu Installation :: ISO On USB HDD - Unable To Boot?

Jul 31, 2010

I downloaded the Ubuntu .iso and burnt it on to a CD. It boots fine on all systems apart from the one I am trying to install it on. This laptop doesn't have a floppy disc drive or the option to boot from a USB pen drive. I've taken the Hard disk out of it and used a USB drive caddy to connect it as a USB drive on a system running XP. How do I go about Installing Ubuntu onto the this USB drive so I can put it back in the laptop as an internal HDD. I've tried unetbootin to install the iso to the USB HDD but when I put it in the laptop as internal drive it doesn't boot.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot Into 10.04

Nov 21, 2010

I have tried so many things to get Ubuntu to start up it's not even funny. First off, I somehow managed to install two (2) video card drivers. One is fglrx (which may or may not be the ati catalyst driver) and an open-source edgers driver. After I rebooted from the fglrx install, my box would boot normally, but "No Signal" shows up when the purple splash screen should. I have it set to auto-login, but I never hear the login sound (drums, etc) from my speakers. The first thing I did was go into recovery mode and typed the following:

Code: sudo apt-get purge fglrx It removed fglrx without any problems. I booted from the live cd (which is 9.10) and edited xorg.conf to the settings from a previous video card (nVidia mx2 200/400). Then I put that video card in and switched from the onboard to the one I had just put in. Upon boot, I found that the purple splash screen just hangs (all 5 dots are red) and sits there. Seeing that it wouldn't boot, I turned it off via the power button. I went back onto the live cd and tried to remove the splash image via

Code: sudo nano /boot/grub/grub.conf I removed "quiet" when it appeared before "splash" (about 3 or 4 times). Now on boot, it shows a bunch of code THEN goes to the purple screen, where it hangs for at least five (5) minutes. I have yet to see it boot completely. I have tried refreshing the swap partition using instructions from here: [URL]

At the moment, I have been waiting for a good ten minutes and nothing has changed on the splash screen. Just to make things clear, fail-safe graphics mode does nothing to help the situation. This started as another problem I had with a video card. You can see it here: [URL]

The machine boots off the CD, I select language and tell it to run off the CD. The Ubuntu screen with the four blinking dots appears and after about 30 secs of CD action. it comes to a grinding halt with the messages shown in attachment 1591. If, when booting, I tell it to install Ubuntu, much the same happens but with message shown in attachment 1597.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot From CD / Enable This?

Jan 9, 2010

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and I've been trying to boot into the live mode. I can get into the main 'Try Ubuntu without any changes' menu, but selecting that option causes the CD tray to spin up, followed by the head audibly flailing about for a minute or two causing the laptop to noticeably vibrate, followed by nothing. It doesn't boot or give any errors, it just stops. I can read the discs just fine in Windows.

So far I've tested shipit CDs of 9.10, 9.04 and 8.10. All cause the above problem. 8.04 works perfectly.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot Without Live CD ?

Apr 5, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 fom a Live CD. My system is a Dell Optiplex 745 that originally had Windows XP installed. Ubuntu is the only OS. Windows XP was removed.

The sytem appears to be running normaly.

When I shutdown (not restart) and then power cycle the computer, I see the Dell splash screen then I get the message: "Errorauto-sensing secondary master hard disk drive. Strike F! key to continue, F2 to run the setup." F1 repeats the message. F2 enters the BIOS setup but does not lead to a fix.

If I place the Live CD in the tray and boot from that, I get to the Ubunt install directory.

If I click "Check disc for defects", then run the check. (I can even interupt the check without completing by hitting ESC), then the system reboots.

I see the Dell Splashscreen.
I see the Ubuntu Live CD menu
I choose "Boot from first hard disk"
Then Ubuntu loads perfectly. I enter my username's passord.
The system runs fine until the next time I shutdown.

How do I get the system to boot directly without needing the LiveCD?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot-up 10.10 Netbook

Dec 6, 2010

I was playing an online game and my netbook, previously running XP, somehow got a virus. The next morning when I turned on my netbook, the screen showed the normal Toshiba BIOS screen, and then went black, only showing a blinking white cursor in the top left corner of the screen.

Right now I'm on my netbook running on a thumb with 10.10 on it. When I try to install 10.10, after rebooting (and setting the BIOS settings back to the hard drive instead of the thumb), the screen goes black like before. If I boot from the thumb drive though and instead of installing, I select the "try ubuntu" option, I'm able to run my netbook as I am now. In the top left corner I have the "install ubuntu-netbook 10.10" option available.

I ran the boot info script and here's what I've got:
