Jun 28, 2011
I am trying to create a bootable usb flash drive for installing ubuntu 11.04. I have already downloaded the desktop i386.iso file. It contained the usb creator. When i tried to use it to create the bootable usb drive, i am unable to load the .iso file into it.

I have this problem across all my computers running Ubuntu (Lucid and Maverick installations). It works sometimes but it's hit and miss. Sometimes it will load up an iso no problem and i have a start up flash stick in no length of time. Other time's it will not load up an iso. I have tried formatting my flash drive these times but it doesn't make a difference as the drive is always recognised by the program yet i sometimes can't load an iso. When this happens i find that i generally have the same problem at the same time on my other Ubuntu installations. I find it weird. Anyway it's very frustrating when i come across another distro that i really want to try out and i cannot load the iso in the program.

I downloaded the puppy linux iso. I don't want to write that iso to any disk (because most of the linux disks are used just once and then the just acquire space in my cd bag). I tried to create its bootable pen drive by start-up disk creator. But start-up disk creator is not accepting the iso file for puppy. Can anyone please tell me how to make a bootable pen-drive of puppy linux

why when using usb creator I may be getting a Failed to install Bootloader error??
I have the .ISO selected in the top pane, 8GB usb drive path in the lower pane.
I'm going this route because my mb isn't recognizing the CD's autorun.inf.

I am trying to use Ubuntu for the 2nd time, I tried before with a different version buy gave in eventually as I couldn't create a bootable USB drive.
I have tried to create a USB boot from the USB Creator on the download it gets to 94% and fails with a chksum error, I have established that the file is indeed the right one.
What could the problem be? Im using a 1gb stick do you think it may be failing due to it been too small?

When I attempt to create a USB Live Xubuntu setup via the Startup Disk Creator, the settings for the Persistent drive are disabled/gray. When I perform the setup, no extra space is reserved for the persistant drive.
I've used the same USB drive for Live Ubuntu installations in the past and had no problems.
Does the USB Startup Disk Creator work with Xubuntu?

I'm installing the qt creator v2 IDE on slackware-current.Installation went smooth but I saw this message:Quote:External DependenciesAdditional development packages requiredApart from a C++ compiler, a number of development libraries need to be presentto enable Qt Creator to build your Qt applications. On Debian and Ubuntu, usethe following command in a terminal to make sure they are installed:sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-dev libSM-dev libxrender-devlibfontconfig1-dev libxext-devIf you're using QtOpenGL, you'll also need OpenGL development files. You can usethe following command to find out which packages to install: sudo apt-get install libgl-dev libglu-devPress [Enter] to continue :The question is. SHOULD I CARE ? abit more analytically: Does Debian separate development related files and creates those lib***-dev packages or I should get these packages and try to install them in slackware too

I want to install Ubuntu onto a partition on my external hard drive, but my CD burner is broken so I can't just boot up with a live CD and do it that way. So can I install Ubuntu onto my external hard drive with the Startup Disk Creator that comes installed on Ubuntu? And if not is there another way I can do this?

Before going too far it may be simplest to answer the question "Does Live USB Creator create a working system for Windows 7?" If not then don't bother reading further. I have installed Live USB Creator on a 32-bit Windows 7 computer but when I run it I can't for the life of me get it to recognize any type of drive. I've read and tried the instructions of using the command line with the --force [drive]: but that has no effect Maybe I am misunderstanding this whole program. From what I read about it, this program will create a working Windows system, place it on a USB stick and then run Windows on a different computer. In my application I would like to run it on my work computer which has Windows XP. If this application should work then will I have complete access to all my computer drives and files and the network/internet? I imagine I would need to install all necessary programs so that I could use them in Windows 7 and would I need to install those programs on the USB stick or could they be on a local hard drive?

I have been using a boot disk with a kickstart file that calls rpm files that are on RHEL4.8. The rpm files tk-devel,tcl-devel,nss-devel and nspr-devel respond back during the install of RHEL5.e with a pop-up saying they do not exist, but when I look on the RHEL5.4 DVD they do exist in the Workstation directory.

I re-booted and selected this USB and selected the "Try it" button. I looked at how 11.04 looks like for about 10 seconds and did not do anything and re-booted.Now there is onlyblack screen with absolutely no text and there is nothing I can do [URL]

1GB Dane-Elec stick is what I'm using.
The only thing out of the ordinary I noticed is that when I clicked "Erase disk" I ended up with a choice of two: /dev/sdc (with no indication of free space but a capacity of 983.0MB), and /dev/sdc1 which showed 288MB free before I erased it and a capacity of 980.4MB.
This app has never worked on any system I've tried it on, but this particular machine is an LTS (10.04) with recent hardware so I'd like to get it fixed if possible.

The NoteTabPro file is in my Desktop area, downloaded from Fookes software; was told it would load automatically into Wine (as the trial version did, and the NoteTabLight version), but it did not? How do I go about doing this please? I know that it can be done, I just haven't found the right buttons to push.[URL]..

I just (basically) completely uninstalled my OS by accident. In synaptic package manager I selected to completely remove volume control (which had been going haywire for god knows what reason) with intent to immediately reinstall. I didn't put 2 and 2 together when it said it'd remove all related files including the kernel... hal... restricted drivers... everything got uninstalled. Network manager crashed...
I decided to try my luck with restarting (what was left) of the system. Now I'm looking at a boot screen of:
loading grub...
error 15: file not found.
Did I have to just make a boot disc and reinstall the os? or can I just "put the pieces back together" as it were and reinstall with a 'sudo aptitude update' once I get network up again?

I am trying to use puttygen to create a ppk file that I can use with putty. I try to import the private key and it gives me the error: Couldn't load private key (ciphers other than DES-EDE3-CBC not supported). Now I obviously know this is telling me that I have the wrong cipher, but what what do I do to use the correct one? Here are the instructions that I used to create the keys.
Also, when I open the key this is the top:
- BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY -
Proc-Type: 4,ENCRYPTED
DEK-Info: AES-128-CBC
and then some other stuff that I don't think I should share. But the weird thing (to me atleast) is that it lists CBC right at the top there which is what puttygen wants. Why won't it accept it?

I managed to successfully install LAMP on my VPS and proceeded to install Wordpress only to run into an odd error. When I click on index.php, it starts to load but nothing happens.
The details:
LAMP = CentOS5.5, Apache 2.2.18(compiled from source), MySQL 5.1.57(compiled from source), PHP 5.3.6(from source too) My site: ottomatic.org as you can see in the index of files index.php is what I'm trying to load and if you check phpinfo.php you can see that PHP was installed correctly too. I added an .htaccess file with 644 permissions to my web root directory and that only seemed to produce an error, this is what I put in the .htaccess:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /

While I have been using Linux for many years (Slackware), I have found myself facing a special need that I can't quite figure out.I work at a club where I use iMovie on my Mac to create a DVD that plays on all of our TV's displaying our upcoming lineup of bands. In order to save on DVD's, I would like to create a very small form factor PC running Linux with the following requirements: the computer must boot into Linux and log itself in, the computer will boot up with a thumb drive attached containing a movie file of the most Linux compatible video format. After booting up and logging itself in, the video on the thumb drive must start playing automatically in full screen mode and in a continuos loop.So the whole thing needs to be automated from boot to playing movie; only the power button should ever need to be touched.

So, the quick and dirty: I installed Ubuntu 8.04 early last year and stuck with it until some of the bugs had been worked out of 9.10, after which I did a clean installation of it. During installation, I remember being asked about keeping a back-up for my previous 8.04 installation and I selected yes (figuring better safe than sorry). So, despite uninstalling 8.04 within Vista before installing 9.10, I now (oddly) am able to boot into either Vista, Ubuntu 8.04 OR Ubuntu 9.10. Aesthetics aside, I don't much care that 8.04 is still present. Installing 9.10 complicated the bejesus out of my boot process though. It currently boots as such:
First screen options:
Ubuntu 8.04
Ubuntu 8.04 (safe)
