Ubuntu Installation :: Log On Failed After Upgrade/install "authentication Failed"

May 20, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu since 6.04, not a linux guru by any means but can usually get myself out of trouble.

So, the issue... I installed 8.04 on my mother's laptop some time back as she was having trouble keeping Win 2000 running (she has a low spec no-name generic laptop btw). I live in Autsralia and she in England, i thought i could better support her if she was running Ubuntu... All has been well with 8.04 but with the new LTS release (10.04) i thought i'd talk her through the upgrade... Did the online upgrade via Update Manager, all seemed to go OK but when she went to log on after restart she got an error saying 'authentication failed' even though we are 100% sure we have the user name and password correct... Tried to do a ctrl+alt+F1 to by pass the GUI log on but couldn't get the terminal session to open up, just got a black screen - no command prompt.

So... thought OK re-install... downloaded the ISO, burned and sent her a CD in the post... talked her through the re-install, all seemed to go well (again) - BUT, after restart, couldn't log in "authentication failed" again...

So, remember i'm trying to talk a novice through all this... any thoughts!?!

If i can get her to log in i can then support her via some kind of remote sesion or other screen share... and it wont cost me a small fortune in international calls!!! But if i can't get a log in, i'm dead in the water!?

Fedora Installation :: Does Live USB Creator Create A Working System For Windows 7?

May 12, 2010

Before going too far it may be simplest to answer the question "Does Live USB Creator create a working system for Windows 7?" If not then don't bother reading further. I have installed Live USB Creator on a 32-bit Windows 7 computer but when I run it I can't for the life of me get it to recognize any type of drive. I've read and tried the instructions of using the command line with the --force [drive]: but that has no effect Maybe I am misunderstanding this whole program. From what I read about it, this program will create a working Windows system, place it on a USB stick and then run Windows on a different computer. In my application I would like to run it on my work computer which has Windows XP. If this application should work then will I have complete access to all my computer drives and files and the network/internet? I imagine I would need to install all necessary programs so that I could use them in Windows 7 and would I need to install those programs on the USB stick or could they be on a local hard drive?

He waited for a while and eventually the ubuntu splash screen appeared with five red dots, and after a moment of that the screen went totally dark. After "a very long time" (in his words) the desktop appeared but his desktop toolbars never appeared. The one folder on his desktop did appear. He "couldn't do anything" and eventually shut it down.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.4 Failed On Install And Noe Will Not Open?

Apr 30, 2010

I installed 9.10 on a Vista 64-bit PC with AMD64 dual core. I have 3 hard drives. 1 x partitioned in to 2 for Vista and its appluications on the other partition. I have another hard drive partitioned with one for documents and the other for Ubuntu OS. The 3rd hard drive was for future backup....

I started to install Ubuntu 10.4 with the Update Manager. It got to the stage where it had just finished downloading the new files.when suddenly, I assume as it started the install, all hell broke loose and it crashed. At first I could restart the machine and could see I had lost system info: there were no "SHUT DOWN", "Network" and other buttons and notifcation tablets on the ribbon. The Update Manage was missing bits too.

It did suggest "re try" but that would not work. I then tried Symnaptics and did a "fix broken items". It found over 90, but could not install them. Then it stopped working all together. I can not gain access. It did break Vista too but I managed to get that up and running again, but I have files on the desktop, the Evolution eMail has vast amounts of stuff and I would like to keep the settings in Firefox.. I have tried using the 9.10 CD to fix but if I go in as "trial" and use the update manager or Synaptics it can not complete the install, it says out of memory.

I am happy to reload the OS, either one, but how do I do it without destroying my valuable data..I have two machines I have been working on and neither have worked! See other thread.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install 11.04 - Failed To Boot From USB ?

I downloaded the 32-bit iso from the Ubuntu website. I followed all of the instruction given on [url]. I went into my BIOS settings and set it to boot from the USB. A black screen came up and first showed me a line of copyright information. On the next line it said "Boot failed: please change disks and press a key to continue". Then on the third line it repeated the same thing "Boot failed: please change disks and press a key to continue".

I'm using a Dell Latitude D610 laptop with Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2. The USB I'm using is eight gigabytes, was manufactured by Toshiba, and has absolutely nothing on it except for the stuff that needs to be on there to install Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed To Install Key Applications / Files

I have installed Lucid 10.04 server on an IBM eserver 325 dual boot with 2003. the cd rom drive on the server is starting to go out and the install worked but failed to install key applications and files. For examle- no VIM (just VI) and the apt sources.list file had one entry- the cd rom. I need to update all the packages necessary for the system to operate fully. ( I have tons of broken dependencies when trying to install SSHserver, Samba and other apps) I manually entered the muliverse and universe repositories in sources.list but this is not resolving the issues with the missing dependencies. I can get a new cd-rom drive but it will certainly take a week or two to get and I need to get this project going. I have some experience with Linux, but not enough to know if there is a magic command that I don't know.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Installer Failed To Install On HDD With Four Partitions

Jul 2, 2010

HDD with four partitions: Three DOS bootable primary partitions are located in the head, and the residual extended partition is divided into several logical drives.

1st trial: 10.04 installer recognized the last largest logical drive for system installation, but installer truncated the extended partition, and created the "terrible" 5th primary partition at the end of the HDD. GParted and other utilities cannot access to this 5th primary partition. (So, I restored the lost partition table on the HDD manually by MBM. But several OS were broken.)

2nd trial: To avoid making this "terrible" 5th primary partition, I located the largest logical drive for installation at not of the end.10.04 installer recognized this logical drive, but failed again.I tried GParted. but also failed to formating to ext4.Maybe, 10.04 installer failed at this formating step. Logical drives are not supported in 10.04 ?
