Ubuntu Installation :: Smoothly Upgrade From EOL?

Jun 19, 2011

I'm looking to bring several 9.04 systems up to 11.04. I have tried following the tutorial here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades/Jaunty

Everything seemed to go fine, but after I restarted, it was still on 9.04. I'm not sure where to go from here. All but one of the servers is running Ubuntu Server (i.e. no desktop GUI) so I'll still need a command line solution (which is preferable anyway).

Upgraded using Update Manager from 10.10 to 11.04 on a dual boot, Windows XP/Ubuntu box. Went smooth as silk. Installed grub perfectly. And seemingly contrary to the vocal minority here, I actually like the Unity interface.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.10 Ati X1250 Games - 2D+3D - Flicker But Run Smoothly

Oct 29, 2010

After having a lot of issues with my card on Ubuntu 9.04, I sadly, removed it an installed XP over it. (XP is better than Vista at least, which is what came with my Laptop, I'm still recovering from THAT traumatic experience.) I have an Acer Extensa 4420, which has a Radeon Xpress 1250 Graphics Card. I tried it again with Ubuntu 10.10 and am very pleased, I run Compiz/Desktop Effects just fine, everything is smooth and fast, and most applications run fine.

As of right now, there are two games which will not run properly. Tibia, and Frets on Fire. Both of these (Tibia is 2D Sprite based, Frets on Fire appears to be 3D but might be some sort of isometric 2D variant). They work, but PARTS of the screen flicker. In tibia, the "game window" is fine, runs at a constant 30fps (not bad, it's a slow card after all), but the chat window and inventory windows flicker at a random rate, but usually once or twice per second. On Frets on Fire, it's the colored dots that scroll on the screen, and the stage lights (though those might intentionally flicker, but they seem to follow the pattern of the dots so I'm gonna go with the idea that it's a problem.)

I tried FGLRX for grins, Compiz/etc. still worked but then nothing that used any type of hardware acceleration would even open, so I removed it. Are there any other drivers for the X1250? It's a legacy product, unfortunately. And as ATi is in this war with nVidia right now, with their new 6xxx cards coming out, I don't see any support for my old (it was old when the laptop was new) integrated GPU coming from them.

How can I make it work? Not looking for major 3D gaming here, but I would like those to work!

Slackware :: Install Goes Smoothly - But No Booting ?

I could go on for pages with the different things that I've tried. The end result with all of them is that the Kernal isn't found by any bootloaders. Lilo won't install and errors out. I don't remember the specific error, sorry. I can't use the usb boot stick it has me make during the installation, it just doesn't boot. My CPU is a dell optiplex GX520, Pentium 4 2.8 ghz, 512mb ram, SATA hd. Nothing too out of the ordinary. I want to believe there's something incompatible in the hardware with the standard kernal, but maybe I'm doing something wrong.

After I got sick of how slow Wallpapoz was to change backgrounds between workspaces (I'm using GNOME) I turned on the Wallpaper plugin in Compiz and turned off the nautilus desktop. That worked great for the backgrounds but now whenever I try to drag windows around the cursor shudders and shakes and the wondows won't move smoothly. I eventually get them to where I want them to go but it's very annoying.

So far, I have re-enabled the nautilus desktop and reinstalled nautilus with synaptic, neither of which did anything.
