Ubuntu Installation :: Rewriting MBR And Then Reloading GRUB2?
Feb 12, 2010
I have to do but wanted to check first before I started messing around with my MBR.
Originally was running XP and installed WUBI 9.10 to play around with Ubuntu before doing a proper install. Got home from work tonight and removed WUBI leaving edited MBR with WUBI boot loader. I thought I might have to run fixmbr before installing Ubuntu but I assumed Ubuntu would write over WUBI edited MBR. Installed Ubuntu 9.10 and everything is fine but when I select XP from first boot option (Ububtu) it then takes me to another boot option which was from the WUBI install.
Basically to get to XP, I have to select it twice.
It's not a big issue but I know that this will annoy me and one day or another I will try and remove the second unnecessary option to boot into XP.
So if I have this correct I will need to run fixmbr from XP disc and then install Grub 2.0 from Ubuntu disc somehow?
Is this right? Is there another way I can delete the second boot option screen?

i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.
sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

I recently inherited an Ubuntu server where the previous admin had installed sendmail and FCheck IDS.The issue I am encountering is that sendmail appears to be rewriting both /etc/mail/m4/dialup.m4 and /etc/mail/sendmail.cf constantly (at least once per hour).dailup.m4 never seems to change (other then the creation date), while sendmail.cf has the line describing who and when it was built changed. So far I have had no luck tracking down why sendmail would be rewriting these files.

I reload the indexpage of the General Help forum, the screen view is not the same as what it was. When I read the indexpage the first thread is listed at the top of the screen, I scroll down to have that. After reloading I see the top of the page on top of the screen and I have to scroll down again. This used to be different. It used to be after reloading the page I would get the same view.See attached pictures to see what I mean. The first one is the view I like to see, the second is what I get after reloading the page.Is this something which is caused by software in my computer, or is this dne on the website side?
I use Mint 9, related to Lucid 10.04 in 64 bits version and Google Chrome as webbrowser. To reload pages automatically I use the plug-in Autoreload and have it set at 10 seconds.I just saw in Firefox it works good, so it must be Chrome.I also placed this thread in the "Forum Feedback and Help" forum but since that is a less popular forum I want to place it here.

I want a mail server that can relay mails to the internet using GMail and fetch the mails of different accounts into the mail server and distribute them to their respective users. I am using Postfix, Fetchmail and Dovecot. I have a PC with 3 users.I use the PC having Ubuntu 9.04 and share the internet. We all send mail and retrieve mail. We do use Evolution and Mutt sometimes. We want to send our mails with our email_ids without even logging in.
Hostname
mail.myhomepc.com
Domain
myhomepc.com
[code]....
I have created my custom certificate using SSL. I've created the Postfix's main.cf file following a tutorial on the net. Currently mails are going fine, but with our local email_ids. I want Postfix to rewrite our local email_ids with the equivalent email_id on the net.

I cannot get to either XP or Ubuntu is there anything I can do short of reloading my ubuntu?

I've got a home network that uses avahi's magic '.local' name service.
One computer is a server running Debian Testing/Apache2/Wordpress 3.0.x.
All the computers in the house have avahi-compatible service, so reaching the server is easy for computers.
I'd like to use my phone via the wireless lan to use the wordpress installation. The gotcha is, I can enter the ip address and get to the login page. The next page, the ip address is re-written to the avahi host name.
As an example,
1. I enter 192.168.11.110:100 and I land on the default page.
2. Click on a page of content.
3. URL is rewritten from the numeric address to the avahi, text address.
4. This is a 404 error on the phone. The laptops handle it just fine.
How do I stop apache2 from rewriting?

I have a dynamic-dns setup that updates from DHCP. In my reverse zone file, I have some mappings that are more or less static (as in, outside of the DHCP range that updates to dhcp-<ipaddr>.domain.tld)
When I add new records to this zone and then reload the zone file (making sure to update the serial number), the name server still does not serve these new records. For example, I might add the following to my 168.192.in-addr.arpa. zone under the $ORIGIN 25.168.192.in-addr.arpa. section:
Code:
45 IN PTR new-host.example.tld.
I then proceed to try:
Code:
rndc reload
/etc/init.d/bind9 reload

I'm running WiFi AP (hostapd/nl80211) and STA (Wicd) in my home net. More or less all does work fine at last. The only problem I have - STA reconnection works few times only (1-4 times), ending with unsuccessful authentification (and multiple AP probing in hostapd debug output before STA failing). Two contradictive facts take place:
1. Reloading hostapd on the AP side permits Wicd to reconnect, while STA rebooting(!) doesn't help.
2. Another STA - my son's Nokia mobile phone (don't know a model) - reconnects with this AP without problems (we have tried 10 times).
So, you see, first fact says something wrong with AP, while the second one says something wrong with STA. Or you can treat these facts in strictly opposite way Indeed WiFi under Linux is very fragile area yet. I have found plenty of close-to-be-similar reports as well as different resolving ways (but it is rare case).OK, few words about setup. Up to date Kubuntu Maverick testing with backports enabled on both sides. ASUS USB-N11 adapters are in use on both sides. It means RT2870 chip.

OS: Debian 5.0.4
Server: Apache2
I've used mod_rewrite to rewrite my apache2 root (my.server.com/) to point to /var/www/drupal6/ instead of /var/www/. I also have a script installed in my cgi-bin (/usr/lib/cgi-bin) but since the rewrite I can't seem to access it. When I go to my.server.come/cgi-bin/test.pl, I get a page not found from my drupal.
Is there a way I can access my cgi-bin without resorting to accessing my drupal through my.server.com/drupal6/?
Background: I have installed drupal CMS which has a base address of my.server.com/drupal6/ as it resided in /var/www/drupal6/. However I wanted users to be able to access it as my.server.com/ so I added the following into my httpd.conf
Code:
NameVirtualHost *:80
<Directory /var/www/drupal6>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /

I have Slackware r13.0 32 bit installed, and I'm interested in getting SNORT installed with Barnyard and BASE to learn about IDS using my own home network. I'm following a guide found here:
[URL]
I'm having trouble getting past the "create the BASE tables" section. Everything up to that point seems to have been functioning properly. When I attempt to login with my username/password, I get rejected.
The httpd error log reports the following:
[DATE] [error] [client] user snort not found: /frontend
I can manually get into the mysql database with this username/password combination. I've been working on this on and off again for the past few days, and I forgot what led me to the mod_auth_mysql.so module, but I remember reading some posts elsewhere that pointed to this module. I found the source, and used apxs to compile and install it. However, when I insert the "LoadModule mysql_auth_module modules/mod_auth_mysql.so" line into the httpd.conf file, I can't restart the httpd service, and I'm given this error:
httpd: Syntax error on line 117 of /etc/httpd/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/modules/mod_auth_mysql.so into server: /usr/modules/mod_auth_mysql.so: undefined symbol: mysql_select_db It seems that the frontend URL on my server is attempting to use php to authenticate to the mysql database. Am I on the right track here? I've seen other posts with similar problems, but they recommend re-installing either mysql or php from the slackware site, but the Slackware package browser site (http://packages.slackware.it/) is down until a new one is written from scratch.

I installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.
Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.

I have decided to dual boot again because I found a old hard drive laying around.
primary drive: sata 500 gb
ubuntu 10.4 64 bit installed with
boot
[code]...
secondary drive: 120 gb ide drive with xp installed. xp was installed first and wrote the mbr to sda1. I then installed ubuntu 10.4 and it overwrote mbr on sda with grub2. I have tried every combination of the 40_custom script for xp I have found here on the forums but to no avail. The 30_OS probe never seems to see it either. Grub 2 will not see xp. I have it in the menu from the custom_40 but it just reboots the system when I choose it. Any advice is greatly appreciated as I am ready to go back to legacy grub which only took 5 minutes to dual boot last time I did dual boot. I want to give grub2 a chance, since it supposed to be better, but I am getting frustrated.
Here is the output from the boot info script.
Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in
partition #1 for /boot/grub.
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb

I posted this about 3 weeks ago in the 'Desktop' forum and with no replies feel this may be a better area
I've got Karmic installed on my netbook which I understand uses Grub2 which is still a BETA version.
I still seem to have the original GRUB (legacy) within the file system, still have a menu.lst file but is appears to be showing the contents of grub.cfg at boot time.
What is happening at boot time, is GRUB Legacy handing over to GRUB2 at boot or is the an option for GRUB2 to hand over to Grub Legacy.

Here is my current setup. I have installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, and BackTrack 4 Final in that order. All operating systems are able to boot and all is working well. The only problem I'm faced with is really just an annoyance. Which is BackTrack is showing up with a "Ubuntu 8.10" entry name.
Now I did some research on this. I found out that BackTrack was based on the Ubuntu 8.10 OS so it makes sense why it would show up that way. I found several articles and topics explaining how to modify the GRUB programming files. I guess to change the entry name, but all of them don't seem fool proof to me nor the best way to go about doing things.
One thing I wasn't able to find info on is where GRUB2 actually gets these entry names from. My theory is if I can find out where GRUB gets this info from, I can simply log into the BackTrack partition and change where the "Ubuntu 8.10" entry is to "BackTrack 4" and then run the update-grub2 command within Ubuntu to update the entry names.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 & grub2 on a Toshiba sattellite laptop last night:
- Win XP shows up in the Grub2 menu.
- When I boot Win XP, it says autock program not found, skipping autocheck, then Win XP stops booting.
- I did a little digging on the net, & found I have to unhide the NTFS partition for Win XP (hd0,1)
- Grub2 doesn't have an unhide command.
- I tried to run parttool, & got the "command not found".

I installed Fedora 12 on my second drive.
Xubuntu 9.10 is on my master drive, and I use it to install/update grub.
When I installed Fedora, I answered "NO" to installing a boot loader.
After install, I booted Xubuntu and ran update-grub, grub couldn't find (apparently) my new fedora install.
I've tried adding it to /etc/grub.d/40_custom, and when I list /boot/grub/grub.conf, it appears to have added Fedora to the bottom of the menu.
When I boot, it doesn't stop at the grub screen, indicating only one installation of linux.
Here are the pertinent file listings, can you see where I've gone wrong?
Code:
dav@dav-desktop:~$ cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg
#
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
#
# It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates

So I recently tried to install Ubuntu Lucid in the following configuration code...
The installation procedure went fine, and it said it had successfully installed GRUB2. But then, when I tried to boot up the fresh system, GRUB2 didn't even load!!
It's not giving me any GRUB errors, or giving me a 'grub recovery>' prompt, so I suspect that it really isn't even booting into GRUB.
I tried booting into the LiveCD, and installing grub to BOTH /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, but it still does not work, and I am at a loss.
Has anybody else had this problem?

Right I had to uninstall windows xp and install windows 7 to play more games! I use windows to play games and that is it. I have restored grub before and I even double checked with this guide: [URL]
I have two hard drives
sda - 320gb with windows
sdb - 100gb /home
-12 gb /
-480gb (NTFS) shared
However after reinstalling grub it still boots into windows! I will boot into windows properly then shut it down cos its coming up with windows was not shut down properly and if that doesn't work it has then been shutdown properly and I will install grub again.

i know i should look more through the forum, but i've been stuck on installing ubuntu on my computer for 3 days now, reinstalling, manual grub installing and so on, but no go. but i found a good thread on my still no fully functional ubuntu computer that explained very well for a complete linux noob how to install grub2 on ubuntu via the livecd. but since i was booting from the live cd meant that i couldn't bookmark it, and very little on this forum, as far as i can see, gets sticky, makes it very hard to find.
the basic problem is, i completly reinstalled ubuntu 10.10, and the bootloader (that i now know is named grub2) could not be installed. so i've found several guides, including the wiki, but it haven't really worked. now instead of explaining all of this over again, like all of you have probably done a million times, can you just post the most informative links here, so i can pick and choose,
