Ubuntu :: GNOME Keeps On Reseting / Fix It?

I have a little issue here. Im running Ubuntu 10.10 .And sometimes when I boot my screen looks like from 1990. So I chose System->Preference->Appearance and chose the Ambience theme. All the bars and panels looked OK but when I try to search through the filesystem all the windows look like this (picture included).

I found on the Internet how to reset the whole GNOME code...

Ubuntu Networking :: Ethtool Is Reseting Wol Setting Before Suspendind?

Feb 28, 2011

So I have tried looking on the web for a solution to this, but I can't find anything. I have only found 2 posts with the same problem and both went unanswered. So I want to set my ubuntu machine to WOL with both Magic Packet and Unicast (the g and u functions in ethtool wol) wol supported: pumbg (thus g and u are both supported) I use "sudo ethtool -s eth0 wol ug" and check to see if it changed, and it does

sudo ethtool eth0
"wol: ug"

After I suspend though, only magic packet will wake it up! I go back in and check with "sudo ethtool eth0" and low and behold, it is back to only being "wol g", which is the default. For some reason it must bump back to default before going into suspend. NOTE, this is with suspend, not even a reboot or a shutdown! Even suspend will reset it to default. I have worked on adding a script to /etc/init.d, adding lines to /etc/rc.local, and adding lines to /etc/networking/interfaces, all with no change.

Any idea what is going on and why it is resetting wol back to default?? I know I should be happy at LEAST it does magic packet, but I want to know why it wont change.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Errors - More Than 1 Grub - The Change Does Not Appear In The Boot Up Menu

Dec 22, 2010

The first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot/grub/win7 - Testdisk/update-grub Method, But It Didn't Work?

Mar 4, 2011

I have 2 hard disks. sda,sdb

In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].

In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.

I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD

Chose advanced istall

Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu

I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted

I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.

Boot Info:

General :: Grub Boot Loader Installation In Dual Boot Machine After Windows 7 Installation?

Mar 23, 2010

I had a dual boot machine with fedora 12 and windows vista and I could use grub boot-loader to switch between two. Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.

Just a black screen with blinking underscore to the top left corner. I never had this problem with 9.10, so I am confused. I tried looking around and nothing helped. Be noted that I am an amateur with Ubuntu coding and installing. I did hear that this is already a common issue now.

Fedora Installation :: Repair To The Grub Boot Loader To Boot Into Win 7 ?

Oct 23, 2009

I have XP, Win7 Pro and F 11 installed. Before I installed F 11, Win 7 boot mgr was working fine. I then installed F 11 and I went to System/Admin/bootloader to edit it and it wouldn't bring up the boot loader. In the attachment was the error msg. Now my only option when I boot up is F 11.

I do not have access to the Win 7 DVD only the F 11 install disk since I am on a fishing trip and need to use Win 7. How can I repair to the grub boot loader to boot into Win 7?

Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot With Xp - Grub Can't Boot Into Windows?

Jan 10, 2010

I just set up a dual boot on a system with fedora 12 and XP. XP in on one hard drive (sda) and Fedora on a second hard drive (sdb).

I installed grub on the Fedora disk so as to not touch the windows disk at all.

Prior to installation, in the bios, I set the Fedora disk (sdb) first in the boot sequence, and then XP (sda) so that the grub loader would boot up by default. (If I set the windows drive first then the system bypasses grub and loads straight into windows.)

My system can now boot up into Fedora fine, but if I select windows from the grub loader menu I just get a blinking cursor - windows will not boot. What do I have to do so that grub can boot into XP?

From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot From USB With Grub?

May 13, 2010

I found a little info in the ubuntu help info but their method (using the grub command line to find the USB, then using chainloader +1 to boot from it) did not work. heir method of using a minimal linux kernal sounds extraordinaraly complex, and perhaps not even possible since I do not have a CD drive in this computer. The problem is, I cannot boot my netbook from the USB anymore. The netbook is an EeePC 900HD, which ran WinXP originally. I was able to access the BIOS before installing UNR and set it to boot from the USB before the HD.

However, it now appears that this grub thing has replaced the netbook's original BIOS and now I cannot boot from the USB anymore. Using Google, I found info in the Ubuntu documentation that details how to boot from USB with grub, but their method did not work. When I use the grub commands to identify the various HDs, I get the following:

"root (hd0,0)" returns "error: no such partition."
"root (hd0,1)" returns "(hd0,1): Filesystem is ntfs" [THIS IS MY WINDOWS XP PARTITION]
"root (hd0,2)" returns "(hd0,2) : Filesystem is unknown" [I THINK THIS IS MY UBUNTU PARTITION"

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Boot 10.04 Out Of GRUB

Jul 22, 2010

I am doing a pure 10.04 Ubuntu installation (no other OS involved) on a NEW hard drive. I am doing this with an alternate install CD.Like the person in the other post, I am receiving this menu:

Quote:

GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu5Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. for the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions.

It's an improvement since I was in the grub rescue mode for a while there.ls command lists the following devices (hd0) and (hd0,1). The root directory is (hd0,1).I've tried formatting with Parted Magic and the "live CD" doesn't boot.Could you please give some help which isn't too technical: I really am lacking in patience here as this has been going on for several days. Fedora Installation :: Installation Success But No Boot Nor Grub Menu

Mar 18, 2011

I installed F14 from my usb according to the wiki page using unetbootin. The usb boots perfectly and i get a working F14 system. I partitioned my HD with gparted and got a /,/home and swap partition, then used the installer to install the system using them. The installer finishes without a problem and ask me to reboot. When I reboot , there is a blank black screen. No grub menu , no fedora loading. I reboot with the usb and the partitions are full with the files from F14 , there is no xorg.log in the /var/log/ so f14 doesn't even start so the problem seems to be with grub.

I check the grub.conf in /boot/ , i set the timeout to 5 secs , i check that the kernel is using nomodeset (according to this wiki page there is a problem with ati), xorg.conf is using vesa as a driver and I reinstall grub with grub-install with no problems. My notebook is a acer aspire 5552 , i don't think is a hardware problem because I've used arch and opensuse with no problems in it. Fedora seems a nice distro , but this error is preventing me from using it.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 64, GRUB Can't Boot XP In RAID-1

Jan 12, 2010

I'm a long time windows user and it-tech but I have long felt that my geek-levels were too low so I installed Ubuntu last week (9.10 x64). Hopefully I can make it my primary OS. I have two 80GB drives in RAID-1 from my nforce raid controller, nforce 570 chipset. Then a 320 GB drive where I placed ubuntu and it's also where grub placed itself. And also a 1TB drive.

When grub tries to boot XP I get the error message: "error: invalid signature" I checked the forum as much as I could and tried a few things, but no change.

Drives sdc and sdd are the two drives in raid, they are matched exactly, but detected as different here. I really think they should be seen as one drive.

how I can make grub work as it should?

Also, if/when I need to make changes to grub, do I really have to use the live CD?

Code:
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Boot From 'grub Rescue'

Jun 5, 2010

I've got Ubuntu 10.04 installed on one partition, and Windows Vista on another. I was messing around with my partitions, and now I can't boot to either one. I just get an error when I boot up on GRUB which says "error: no such partition", and then a prompt saying 'grub rescue>'. I've read up on other people's posts, and they said that I should reinstall GRUB from a livecd, but that doesn't look like it does anything. It seems that GRUB is trying to boot from hd0,8, and that doesn't exist anymore. I can change the 'root' and 'prefix' variables to the right partitions, but the 'boot' or 'chainloader' command doesn't work. You should be able to boot from 'grub rescue>', because that's what it's for, right?

I just want to be able to boot into Ubuntu, not Windows.

PS: Sorry if I'm specifying way too much information(or not enough), I'm fairly new to forums.

Ubuntu Installation :: Triple Boot With Grub?

I have (only bc i have to) windows vista, also Ubuntu 10.04 on the same drive, and dual-booting is no issue at all. But after I installed Mandriva 2010 to try to triple boot, i couldn't find Ubuntu anymore so I got rid of mandriva, and grub was messed up bc I deleted all mandriva partitions. So then I installed Xubuntu 9.10 (because it is a quick install) to recover grub, and with Xubuntu, Ubuntu, and vista, Grub sees all three OSes no problem. So what would I have to do to make Grub work this way when I install Mandriva?
