May 1, 2010I have ssh access to a machine running 9.10. Now I want to remote upgrade it to 10.04.
What is the best/safest way to do that?

Ubuntu Installation :: Remote X Applications Don't Work After Upgrade To Lucid
Oct 2, 2010I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) system to 10.04 (Lucid) and my remote X applications no longer work. The problem seems to pertain to Xauthority. When the remote X client attempts to access the X server on Lucid it receives an error indicating that there is no matching MIT Magic Cookie (hereafter cookie) for the display. It turns out that this is true. I'm of the belief that the subject cookie should be generated for my display when the X session is started on Lucid.I thought this was being done by GDM when I logged on. However, $HOME/.Xauthority contains only 1 cookie which is for the display identified as "Pluto/Unix:0" (Pluto is the name of the host). I'm expecting a cookie for a display identified as "Pluto.my.test:0" where "my.test" is the domain name for my network.

Apr 30, 2010I've just upgraded my web/tv setup from 9.10 to lucid and everything seems to be working apart from my infra red remote control.The remote was working fine in 9.10 and was used to control mythtv-frontend however after the upgrade the remote appears to be controlling ubuntu natively, i.e. right left up and down control what is selected on the desktop where as previously the remote was set to only work within mythtv. Whilst native support for my remote control is muchly appreciated(if that is what this is) where can I configure the controls so that it is usable again?

Nov 14, 2010I did a upgrade to 10.04 on my server. Then after a reboot I was unable to remotely get into server. Upon connecting the monitor I am greeted with the purple 10.04 boot screen with this text at the bottom:

Now I did some googling and the results I came across involved a encrypted drive which I have never even tried to setup. Now if I choose a manual recovery I am dropped to cli which from there I can start networking then ssh into the system and run updates, ping other machines, etc. But again this is meant to be a remote access server so everytime I reboot I cant just hit the M key let alone run service networking start! So I commented out the swap entry's in both my /etc/crypttab and /etc/fstab...now I cannot even get to terminal as I could before...now it just loops with no errors!

Mar 16, 2011My client has a server on SL-10.1, that needs to be upgraded to 11.3. I have done upgrades before (from 11.0), but I need to know if I can upgrade from such an old version as well. I tried to add the 11.3 repo, but it refused to accept it. Is this already a sign that upgrading won't work?

Aug 19, 2011I setup a remote web server yesterday evening, which had Centos 5.3 on it. This went well, and I did this mostly over vnc, to get a GUI. However, I hadn't realised that there was a pending cron job to 'yum upgrade'. So, come 2am, 5.3 turned into 5.6. I carried on the install today, but after some time (I'm not sure exactly how or when), I lost the ability to run any GUI system config tools that required root login. I also lost the ability to run anything graphical - emacs, for example, when I was already root in an xterm.
/var/log/secure isn't telling me anything. It claims that it's running the config tool on my behalf, but nothing happens. If I try to run emacs, I get a message saying that the X server isn't responding. Could this be related to the upgrade? It feels like a PolicyKit problem - I've seen something similar on 6.0 for remote access over vnc - but 5.6 isn't running PolicyKIt.

I had it working properly in karmic. The howto at [URL] fails to help -- and is pretty much what I'd successfully done under kamic. May 4, 2011I just remotely updated my uncle's Ubuntu 10.10 desktop to 11.04. My uncle has no computer skills, so it is very important that I troubleshoot his problems using VNC. After completing the 11.04 upgrade, I was not able to connect to him via VNC. After some fiddling around I was able to connect by turning off the confirmation option in the Security section. We are now using the password security option. The problem is that my uncle does not have any security against my peering eyes.
I tried reinstalling Vinagre, but that didn't help. Is it possible to get the confirmation option working again somehow?
Is there a download link for Vinagre 3.01 (deb)?

"Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report." I don't think any of the issues above apply - can anyone offer advice on how to get around or "force " the upgrade

Jun 1, 2010While upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu I noticed a warning saying that the installation/upgrade should not be interupted. Unfortunately though, during this process my computer froze up and I had to shut it down. Ubuntu no longer starts on my computer. I still have Windows though, which is what I'm using now.

Sep 15, 2009What I'm trying to do at this point is setup VNC so I can remote into the system via my windows xp systems. I have VNC installed on those computer and I was able to get GNOME's remote desktop operating when I log in on level 5 and actually logged into my user account. However, when I'm not logged in on level 5 it will reject connections entirely. Ultimately I want to remote into the system using tightVNC and view the level 3 (command line only) thing, and allow me to telinit - 5 to switch to gui if I need it from VNC on the windows system. This way I don't need a monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged into the server. Right now that's what I'm having to do.
The problem is that it doesn't run in level 3 at all and level 5 (gui mode) doesn't work if i'm not logged into an account. So how can I get this to work at as a constant running server no matter what level and login point i'm at? Ultimately for this Linux admin class I have to setup a working server and I figured I'd get a base setup with VNC support that I could log into from school to work off of instead of having to use the local connection. Once I get VNC working on my network i'm pretty sure I can get it working beyond my local network.

As you can see I'm having issues with the libstdc++ lib being detected. I have it installed, but apparently not everything is setup properly. I also have an RPM file for VNC and I've tried to install it with the gnome shell but it gives me an error: "Can't install /home/[user]/Download/vnc-4_1_3-x86_linux.rpm as no transaction" I'm not sure what that means. When I use the command line I get this:

Feb 6, 2011I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.
I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?

Jan 6, 2011I have Ubuntu 10.10 on a pc connected to my TV. I would like to be able to use remote desktop on this from another pc, so i enable Remote Desktop and apply the settings i need, but it says its only available through local network and to connect with the name localhost.
When i try and connect to the computers IP address from other computers with Ubuntu 10.10 on local network, it says it cannot find the server.

Apr 18, 2010But I fully have my server and everything up, MySQL, PHP5, Apache2, Postfix, Courier, SQMail, can't remember what else atm.
I installed mailx and used the mail command to send an email to my external email address, worked just fine. sent it to another email, worked as well.
But the problem is, I do 'telnet localhost 25' to test it like they say, it connects. I run 'ehlo localhost' Nothing happens.
I've tried setting it up with Thunderbird on my home pc and it connects to the IMAP & POP servers just fine, but it cannot establish a connection with SMTP, I've tried changing the SMTP port to other ones, still no luck.
Oh BTW, I use Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)
