Ubuntu / Apple :: Lucid Upgrade Broken LIRC (MacBook Remote)
May 4, 2010
After upgrading to lucid, the remote that accompanied my macbook 4.1 appears to do nothing. (Testing with irw and xev). The howto at [URL] avoids any reference to the remote. I had it working properly in karmic. The howto at [URL] fails to help -- and is pretty much what I'd successfully done under kamic. The following launchpad post accurately describes my experience: [URL]. Has anyone resolved, found a workaround for, or otherwise had success getting lirc to work on a macbook with lucid?

Today I installed all the updates that were associated with the 2.6.31-17 kernel upgrade on Ubuntu 9.10.It appears the update has broken my stock 17-inch Macbook Pro 5,2 because after restarting my screen is just black. I don't see the ReFit choice menu (I have OS X and Ubuntu installed), and even when I let the machine boot all the way into Mac OS X the screen just remains black. The apple logo on the back of the screen doesn't turn on at all.
I can see the keyboard backlights eventually come on (which is normal when you get to Mac OS X login prompt) - so its almost as if its booting but just wont talk to the display. When you press the brightness buttons you can faintly see the shade of black changing. What the heck has happened? I just paid a big load of money for this baby and I'm very sad now I love Ubuntu but this is ridiculous.

My wireless was working perfectly until I accidentally let the battery run flat with the machine prevented from hibernating. Upon recovery, there was no wireless available. Checking the Hardware Drivers, I can see the Broadcomm driver as "Activated but not currently in use". Following the copious advice elsewhere I have disabled the driver, rebooted the machine, enabled it again - many times. Still the same message. What is stopping me from activating it? Bit of a noob so........

I have created a partition through Boot Camp, downloaded the 64 bit Intel installer for PC and Mac, verified the checksum, burned a CD from its image (on the second try), but when I try to boot up from that CD, rEFIt refuses because of a "legacy" problem. I assumed it would be a live CD, from which I could do the installation; am I wrong, is there another way to install from it? My MacBook Pro 5,3 is the one exception to having its own installation page.

I'm having a problem getting the apple remote on my Macbook 2,1 to work with Karmic and am looking for a little advice. I have followed the guide here [URl] and utilised the extended .lircrc in the first post of this thread [URL]linked to by the guide however I cannot get any action from my remote (it does work in OSX).
The problem, I believe, lies in where Gnome needs to start irexec and irxevent. Running irexrc -d from a terminal gives no output but I can also not find a process running after launch.Running irxevent -d returns 'irxevent: could not connect to socket irxevent: No such file or directory'I have also installed gnome-lirc-properties which (until a recent reboot) reported that there was no IR daemon running.

I installed the bleeding edge drivers using a guide I was referred to from the wiki, when I was having intermittent wifi connections. It worked well for about two days, but now it's just as intermittent as before, and it works just fine in OSX and on other machines, so I'm thinking I need to change the driver.
How do I go about installing another driver? Which ones have you had luck with for a MacBook Pro Santa Rosa 3,1 running lucid under 64 bits?

I've just installed Kubuntu 9.10 on a friends powerbook g4 and it's running wonderfully. I don't want to upgrade to Lucid, I tried it and it ran not so good on this computer. How can I tell it to stop offering to upgrade to the next release? (I only want the automatic upgrade notification to appear for normal upgrades and not include Lucid, or have Lucid option to appear at all).

I searched through a lot of threads on whether its safe to upgrade from a working Karmic install to Lucid via the upgrade manager. I found a few threads from around 1 month ago where some said it worked, others said they had problems with grub etc.
Does anyone know the current status of this? I would like to upgrade to Lucid but I don't know if its safe. Would it be better to use an install CD instead of the upgrade manager? Do I need to manually install grub rather than let the install program do it? (I think the upgrade manager doesn't give an option it just installs grub after the upgrade)

Last night I upgraded to Lucid from Karmic, and now I can't play any DVDs (physical or ripped). These worked fine in Karmic, but now when I select them, playback freezes on any menu, and I have to kill the front end process. Mythtv is set to use the internal player, but I have the same issue with VLC.

previosuly installed products that mapped keys, but I dont have and have never had any of them. reset the keyboard to default settings, which I happily did to no avail.
So for me, since I upgraded, keyboard input (either local or via VNC, so it isnt hardware) does nothing for either the caps lock key or the shift key. Kinda makes it imnpossible to eneter @ or any uppercase character, for example !

So I've got this old Apple with an nVidia chipset. Don't know much about Apples, but from random searches on google I think it's an imac g5.
Anyway when I install Kubuntu 10.04 it works until I update it, then the video dies. It looks as though the nouveau driver is being killed and nv put back in it's place, anyone have any remedies I might try?

The only thing I have found so far which does not work for me after upgrading to 10.04 is the ability to change the master volume via LIRC and the pulseaudio lirc plugin.LIRC itself is working, I can verify it recognizes my remote control input by using irw, and all other portions of my lircrc file are executed correctly, such as my On Screen Display. However, no changes are made to the system volume.
I have already reinstalled the lirc pulseaudio plugin to no avail. Can anyone else confirm if this does/doesn't work on their own system?

I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) system to 10.04 (Lucid) and my remote X applications no longer work. The problem seems to pertain to Xauthority. When the remote X client attempts to access the X server on Lucid it receives an error indicating that there is no matching MIT Magic Cookie (hereafter cookie) for the display. It turns out that this is true. I'm of the belief that the subject cookie should be generated for my display when the X session is started on Lucid.I thought this was being done by GDM when I logged on. However, $HOME/.Xauthority contains only 1 cookie which is for the display identified as "Pluto/Unix:0" (Pluto is the name of the host). I'm expecting a cookie for a display identified as "Pluto.my.test:0" where "my.test" is the domain name for my network.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and am trying to get lirc to recognize my pcusa mce remote control. I have been working on this for a week and have not had any success. Please note that I am very new to Linux. I am comfortable moving around in the terminal but most of anything else that I do in the terminal is just following instructions.
This is the remote that I am using:
[URL]
When I run
cat /proc/bus/input/devices
I do not see anything that could be the remote. I have tried plugging the USB receiver into my Ubuntu 10.10 net book but it doesn't see the receiver either. I do not have a windows machine that I can test the remote on but I plugged the receiver into my iMac and I did get a red LED lit that I haven't seen on the Ubuntu machines.
When I run irw and press buttons on the remote I see nothing on the terminal.
When I run:
sudo mode2
I get:
mode2: could not get file information for /dev/lirc
mode2: default_init(): No such file or directory
I have tried mode2 both with lirc running and stopped and I get the same response either way.
I have confirmed that there is no /dev/lirc but there is a lircd in /dev (it's not a directory). Also I had read somewhere that lirc doesn't work under Ubuntu 10.10. Is that the case?

I've just upgraded my web/tv setup from 9.10 to lucid and everything seems to be working apart from my infra red remote control. The remote was working fine in 9.10 and was used to control mythtv-frontend however after the upgrade the remote appears to be controlling ubuntu natively, i.e. right left up and down control what is selected on the desktop where as previously the remote was set to only work within mythtv. Whilst native support for my remote control is muchly appreciated(if that is what this is) where can I configure the controls so that it is usable again?

I'm using Debian Squeeze and my 0-9 remote control buttons and power off button work even if I've didn't installed lirc. In a Gnome desktop I could set up the volume too, but now as I'm using Fluxbox I can't start the volume control applet anymore (by the way does somebody knows any handy volume applet for Fluxbox ?)So my question is that if some button of my remote control already work without lirc, then there must by some drivers installed, when I've upgraded to a newer kernel, but I can't figure out what makes my remote control to work. Does anybody knows something about this and if there's something already installed for IR devices in newer kernels how can it be further configured ?
If i type the command "cat /dev/input/event6" in my terminal I can see that all my remote control buttons give a signal, but still I can't figure it out how can I set up all of them.

Everything works great, but I cant get lirc to work or to recognize nu remote:Logitech ultraX. I don`t understand how to configure lirc in openSUSE or what packages is required for lirc to work, I know that I must manualz add file in lirc for my remote but I don`t know where to find them or how to use them. If someone could guide me step by step try configuration procedure.

I've bought this remote control that sais it works in Vista, XP etc. without any driver. Basically it has a bunch of buttons that replace the mouse and a bunch of others that replace basic keyboard functions (arrows, enter, escape). It has a USB IR receiver so I thought I could simply use it as a lirc remote in Ubuntu.
However, it sais absolutely nothing on it except for "PCremote" so during lirc installation I have no idea what to choose. And, interestingly, I accidentally discovered that it works in Ubuntu, too, out of the box. Controlling the mouse and acting like a keyboard. Is there a way I can forfeit current functionality and just get it to work as a customizable lirc remote? Or even better, keep current functionality but change it only for certain apps (xbmc, vlc etc)?

I had a working lirc using my hauppage card. After upgrade to Lucid, it no longer works. I don't see errors, but it appears to me is is not detecting the Hauppage card:

I've got a Macbook Air and a verified 9.10 liveCD in the external superdrive. I can successfully boot to the CD, but when I choose "try ubuntu without installing", all I get is a blinking cursor in the upper-left of the screen forever. Any idea why it won't start? CD works fine on my Dell, that's why I say it's verified.

Today i went ahead and installed ubuntu on my windows desktop pc. I tryed the live cd and tested it out and everything was fine i then installed it using wubi. I then wanted to install it to my macbook ( bought in june 2009 ) and i booted the live cd and chose try ubuntu without any change to your computer. It booted a black screen with a white _ at the top then the screen went white and did nothing. I tryed it several times and nothing happend. I then said ok il maybe just try install it through wubi on my bootcamp partition and it all went fine until i got to the windows bootloader and chose ubuntu, it camp up finishing linux installation and where its meant to change and show the ubuntu symbol after ( i know because i've installed ubuntu on the pc) the screen went white. Nothing.

I have a first generation Macbook that shipped with Tiger. I don't often use the os x partition anymore, as I installed Windows XP on a 15 gig partition back when bootcamp was still in beta and I normally use that when I'm on my laptop. Since Tiger is rather old and the only reason I would want to upgrade to leopard is to have access to bootcamp again (they disabled access to the bootcamp application in os x, but I can still boot into windows), I have been thinking about wiping out my os x installation and using ubuntu instead. Does anyone have any thoughts on the pros and cons of totally removing os x?
The main reason I hesitate to just jump in and do it is because if I decide to install os x again I won't be able to install bootcamp again, unless I buy leopard. If I wipe out os x and install ubuntu, will I still be able to access windows in the same way? Windows uses bootcamp drivers to run properly, so I have never quite been sure if it is pulling something off of the os x partition or if it is totally standalone.
