Ubuntu Installation :: RT Kernel & Configure LILO: $sudo Liloconfig As Well As Fstab
Feb 16, 2011
I wanted to give Ubuntu Studio a try, for music production purpose, as a musician and composer-writer. So I started with a Ubuntu 10.10 generic install then processed with the installation of Ubuntu Studio packages, including RT kernel at last. Everything ran smoothly until I installed this RT kernel...The problem appears to be LILO and its config, as well as fstab. I fear all of this is far above my abilities, this is why I submit my problem to the community. Here's what I've discovered when trying to configure LILO: $ sudo liloconfig
[Code]....

I'm fairly new to linux, and a few days ago, as I was updating my system, I got the "EBDA is big ; kernel setup stack overlaps LILO second stage" error after reboot. I use a 3- boot, ( Win XP / Debian / Debian) and Windows XP works fine, but I can't launch any of the Debian. I googled the message, and I found this link :
[URL]
The only problem problem is that when I try to chroot, I got another message, "chroot: failed to run command `/bin/bash': No such file or directory" I googled this message too, but found no relevant answers. I am now using a knoppix usb drive to try to repair the lilo, but I ran out of ideas ...

I'm trying to fix a friends EeePC notebook (Asus) running a recently upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 from Karmic Koala. She used the update manager for the upgrade to 10.04 LTS and everything was fine until she had tried to install something from the Ubuntu Software Center (she doesn't remember what happened). After that, both Update manager and Synaptic stopped working.Update manager gives the following error:Quote:Software index is broken. ... Try to use synaptic for something?!...
Then Synaptic manager gives the following error:Quote:E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.And when I try that command, the terminal just keeps blinking with the cursor and does nothing for more than an hour. This is the output of the comand:Quote:
jasna@Jasna:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
[sudo] password for jasna:
Setting up moodle (1.9.4.dfsg-0ubuntu4) ...

Alright setting up a friends netbook, display has been a little iffy (slow. glxgears is giving like 100fps). Couple issues: xorg.conf doesn't exist (i know thats typically not an issue) and "sudo xorg -configure" and "sudo xorg --configure" both return "xorg command not found."
glxinfo say that its using Mesa for the software rasterizer and that the driver is from mesa. lspci says the VGA controller is from Intel. I'm thinking xorg is defaulting to vesa for drivers, but I need to know how to change that to the open source intel driver

After I got the OS up and running (v9.10), I was prompted to download and install some updates. The download is complete, but when I try to install the updates, I receive the following message. What should I do?
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I'm currently trying to setup Slackware 13.7 on a server, using software RAID 1. I'm using the README_RAID.TXT document at the root of the Slackware disc as a reference. Anyway, here's what I have so far.
/dev/md1 -> /boot partition
/dev/md2 -> swap partition
/dev/md3 -> / partition
Code:
[root@raymonde:~] # fdisk -l /dev/sd{a,b}
Disk /dev/sda: 41.1 GB, 41110142976 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4998 cylinders, total 80293248 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
[code]....
I created an initrd image using mkinitrd -F, added an according stanza to /etc/lilo.conf and ran 'lilo' after that. Now I can boot on the vanilla huge kernel all right. But I can't seem to boot on the generic kernel. Whenever I try to do this, the boot process stops short on the following error message:
Code:
mount: mounting /dev/md3 on /mnt failed: Device or resource busy
ERROR: no /sbin/init found on rootdev

Installed a TP-Link TG-3269 Gigabit card in a machine running OS 11.3 32 bit, when I go into Yast, Network Devices, Network to try configuring the card I get this errormsg: Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details. Couldn't find any mention of the card in dmesg's output, (though the 8139 onboard card is in there) there is some stuff about pci host bridge but I don't know whether they would be relevant or not
The chip on the card says it's rtl8169sc but lspci lists it as being 00:07.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8369 (rev 10) Done some googling and there don't seem be any drivers for a Realtek 8639 and it returns no matches from a search on realtek's site, but there is a driver there for rtl8169sc chips, which I downloaded and installed, no errors when installing it Even after a reboot I still get the same error in Yast's Network Settings screen, lspci still lists it as 8369 and the device isn't listed at all if I run ifconfig

This computer is incompatible with grub. So normally with other linux distros when the installation ask me about grub I click back and the distros give me the lilo option.
But ubuntu-10.04.2-alternate-i386.iso does not give the lilo options. I try apt-get install lilo but no success. (shell rescue mode)the answer is: Package lilo is no available So I need a Ubuntu with lilo. or some way to install lilo in this distro.

I've had two hd's in my box forever. for more space and backup reasons. Well I have started running the Debian Squeeze distro since December. I've had many issues, some are still unresolved. but now I'm running into major headaches with the fstab. Specifically dealing with/wondering why UUID's are used instead of the old /dev/hd? I was a little annoyed when I tried Kubuntu to find /dev/sd? used instead of /dev/hd? but that was workable. But the UUID's are a nightmare. Here's my problem.
My main box is finally giving up the ghost. The mobo is dying. So in order to do some tests I took my hd bundle (my two hard drives with their cables) physically out of the box and temp installed them in a test box. I wanted to do some benchmark and other tests. I got all kinds of errors. I found that the system wasn't recognizing the UUID's listed in fstab. My concern is when the new mobo gets here next week I won't simply be able to plug the hd's in like I always have been and just let Linux reconfigure itself (Debian used to be good about this). I really don't want to have to clean reinstall if it's not needed.
So for this I have two questions. WHY developers decided to drop using /dev/hd? or even /dev/sd? ?
And is it possible to revert fstab's listings back to the old /dev/hd? settings. In debian fstab had lines commented out showing how each partition was listed in it's /dev/hd? status during install.
I'm getting really sick of all these archane changes in ALL aspects of linux that don't seem to have any good explaination or need.

I've apparently changed my fstab file and now my boot drive fails to mount. The original file is still there "fstab.BAK". How do I rename the current fstab to another name and rename the fstab.BAK to fstab? Since this is read only in the /etc directory I have not been able to make this happen from a command prompt.

I somehow recalled a rule re the location of the boot partitions with LILO being required to be in the first part of the drive (1024 cylinders, it seems) and I found it indeed in an old doc:
Boot Partition: Your boot partition ought to be a primary partition, not a logical partition. This will ease recovery in case of disaster, but it is not technically necessary. It must be of type 0x83 "Linux native". If you are using lilo, your boot partition must be contained within the first 1024 cylinders of the drive. (Typically, the boot partition need only contain the kernel image.) Is this still valid in GRUB, esp in Fedora 10?

After that, run:
./configure make sudo make install" I have no clue what to do... I typed in "./configure" in the terminal and it says "bash: ./configure: No such file or directory?

I made a mistake in my fstab. I know what the problem is and how the fstab needs to be changed. However, since the system will not boot I'm having diffeculty getting in to edit it.The system is running Ubuntu 10.4 64 Bit with LVM2.I have both 10.4 64Bit Server and 10.4 32Bit Desktop cds currently and could burn others if needed. With 32Bit Desktop I'm able to get to a live cd prompt but my hard disks are not mounted.if I try mounting /dev/sda5 to a dummy directory I created it tells me it doesn't know the type of 'LVM2_member'.

I'm attempting to add an additional HDD to my system (without having to format it). I was told that I need to edit my Fstab. I'm trying to get an internal SATA drive mounted. I'm getting these two errors when I try and mount the drive DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
and
DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending
my Fstab is as follows.
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

I just went from Jaunty to Maverick. I booted Maverick and manually mounted my Windows Network drives by clicking on the appropriate "mount" command in the directory /media.I then created an fstab file like I did in Jaunty. Here is the smb mount command that I had in the fstab file. I had a file with the user id and password in the credentials file.Code://???.???.??.?public_p/media/servername smbfs credentials=root,dmask=0777,fmask=0777 0 0This provided me access to my server for the past 18 months.I modified the fstab file for Maverick which was working fine for 3 days so I would automatically mount the server drives.

I've been using Ubuntu since 7.04 and I've never had this happen. I was at 10.04 and I downloaded the torrent iso of 11.04 and burned it to a CD and used that to upgrade. I don't know if that was the problem, but doing the upgrade that way erased my fstab. When I tried to recreate it, I was getting errors mapping to the fileshares. Turned out the upgrade uninstalled cifs/smbfs as well. In addition to uninstalling wine. After reinstalling, everything is ok.... so far. This was NOT the smoothest upgrade.

I have since quite a long time the problem that files using special characters in their filenames are not displayed in various applications. In console or Thunar I have a special "white questionmark in a rhombus" sign for every special character. It is an XFS partition. I have read a few times that this can be solved by using the iocharset=utf8 option in /etc/fstab, but this option is not recognized and the mount inhibited.
I used other options: utf8 as well as nls=utf8, but that was not recognized neither. What option do I need to specify to enable utf8 for XFS ? Samba works. That means I can play an MP3 file in Windows exported from the XFS disk using Samba, although the special character is then shown as "_" in Windows..

I have Ubuntu 10.10 Server installed on a 32 core machine(quad AMD Magny Cours 6128 ), and I was wondering what kernel configuration would optimize its performance?So far, I have only found the obvious configurations that are checked off:
1) Processor type and features ---> Support for big SMP systems with more than 8 CPUs
2) Processor type and features ---> Maximum num of CPUs
3) Multi-core scheduler support
Is there anything else I should consider?I plan on running multi-threaded programs with moderate amount of inter-processor communication, shouldn't there be some options related to the shared memory?
