I do not want my windows to be dragged and placed partially in two desktops. However, I have enabled Edge flipping to move window to next desktop. My problem is with partial overlap. Something which makes the windows stay completely in the desktop, but at the same time allow edge flipping.
View 1 RepliesI am currently using the windows version of gVim to edit source files on a networked drive mapped to a linux system, as well as local files created in cygwin.
The problem is that the windows version of gVim destroys the original file permissions on the respective systems. IE: Files on cygwin are defaulted to 077. When edited by the windows version of vim they are saved as 777.This problem doesn't even occur when using ms-notepad (as well as all other editors I've tried), so I am not quite sure why gVim does it.
A possible solution would be to use cygwin's gVim for everything, but that's rather cumbersome as it requires running an x11 environment to support it, and it causes some problems when running some commands from within gVim (or vim for that matter) when working on the networked drive.
Any ideas how I might be able to maintain the existing file permissions?
This morning while on a different machine the problem with cygwin did not occur. Cygwin & gVim were the same version, however the other machine is running WinXP while the machine the problem is occurring on runs Win7.
I'm in the process of installing the usual Python/Numpy/Scipy/Matplotlib combination. I'm using the installed version of Python (2.7) on Ubuntu 11.04 but I've compiled Numpy and Scipy (and ATLAS/LAPACK etc.) from source. I now want to install matplotlib from the repositories but every time I do python-numpy is installed as a dependency of python-matplotlib. I've tried "apt-get hold python-numpy" etc. and also locking the version of each package in synaptic but both synaptic and apt-get will happily install the packages when requested, I assume because hold/lock version don't work on packages that aren't yet installed.
How can I prevent these packages being installed? Or is there a way to tell Ubuntu that I already have versions?
So earlier today I was running out of space on my regular Windows 7 partition and I played around with extending it. I ended up somehow deleting grub and messing up my entire system. I've spent the last 2 hours looking for the answer to this and everyone has been saying to boot from a live disk and fix it that way.
Well, I've tried everything, the only way I can boot right now is via USB and it will NOT allow me to. I checked on other computers and even re-installed and formatted by external hard drive to try and get it to work and it refuses. I've changed my BIOS to boot from USB so I have no idea as to why this is happening. Also, I've tried using the "ls" command to find my partition via "ls (hdX,Y)/" and all of them come up as unknown filesystems.
I have taken much time and effort to get Mediatomb working on my new machine running Maverick Server, with GUI. Those of you who run Mediatomb know that it's pretty convoluted to get everything "just right".I have located the three Mediatomb packages in Synaptec and marked them as "lock version" in the hope that they will not be up(side)graded to a slightly different version of Mediatomb, which does not have Javascript enabled however, update manager still insists on trying to make the change to the other version .

I also am not able to use my wireless network. This is being booted on a Dell Inspiron 1545 Vista Sp2 system with 4 gb or RAM.The wireless network connection works fine with Vista.
Recently my moms computer crashed and I'm trying to fix it I'm pretty much finished but, I installed Ubuntu via live CD, I thought that would be fine with her but, no, she hates Ubuntu and she wants windows back.
The only problem is her CD-Rom drive is now broke and none of her usb ports work. So I'm wondering if there is a way to install Windows 7 without a USB or CD from inside Ubuntu?
I've found ways to do it from inside windows, but never from inside Ubuntu, any ideas?
New 10.10 desktop installation on an Acer Aspire 5515 32 bit Vista Home Basic/ 3 GB RAM. There was no option during the Ubuntu installation to select the Windows partition/drive for access via the Ubuntu installation, and the drive does not now appear in "Places." The reason I used 10.10 was because the 10.04 installation on the same machine also would not allow mounting of the Windows drive. However, there was an option to select the Windows drive during the 10.04 install. Couple of things I noticed that were "different."
1) During the 10.04 installation (over which the 10.10 install now resides) there was an option to select either or both of the two user accounts - both administrative - in the Vista installation. I hadn't noticed that before on previous installations. I choose both accounts for later importing, but, again, there was no option to mount the drive upon the finished Ubuntu installation.
2) There could be an issue with what I did with the partition/naming on the Vista installation. Upon restoring to factory settings, I deleted the (10 GB!) restore partition and resized Vista to occupy the newly opened space. But the GRUB entry for Vista says "Windows Recovery Environment" instead of "Windows" or whatever it usually does.
Everything else about this dual-boot installation system is just fine: everything boots and updates and so forth. But I really need that Windows drive to mount so that my friend's kids can import iTunes and other files from Windows to Ubuntu. I also want to be able to run Avast scans on Windows from Ubuntu. I did rummage around a bit by way of locating a solution for this problem, but I can't find anything which "works" or is on point.
Im currently using Windows XP on my HP Compaq nx5000 and want to install Ubuntu on it. Do i use the Desktop ISO file or another.

The last time I tried to install 10.04 a week after it came out, I was presented with tons of errors, even though I did it the same exact way I did it with 9.10 that worked. I would like some help on the subject of installing them on usb hard drives. Most the time, it's GRUB being antsy about where it's installed. IF I don't change where to install GRUB, it won't let me boot on any other computer, or USB port.

The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

Yesterday upgraded firefox and upgraded Java 6 from update 20 to update 24 so that I could use the Zotero bibiliographic program in FF. After the upgrade and restart, the windows title bar that includes minimize, maximize and close buttons has disappeared from all windows that I open except google chrome. If I open and app, or FF, or the dvd player, title bar is gone. I have noticed that Java updates have caused similar problems before but none of the prescribed steps seems to have changed my system

I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.
Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?
I have a windows PC which I would like to dual boot with Ubuntu. However, I have some very important documents scattered all over the "My Documents" folder. I don't want to move these to the linux partition manually because of the possibility of misplacing, deleting or otherwise doing something that could alter these files. (They happen to be notes that I make on Biology).
My plan was to mount the windows partitions on Ubuntu and then use symbolic links to navigate to the "My Docs" folder on the windows partition.
This is the main question: It is possible to mount hard drives and then make an existing folder on Ubuntu (for example the /home/user/Documents folder)point to the "MY DOCUMENTS" folder on windows? (By "point to" I mean something like a symbolic link. So, for example, by double clicking on the /home/user/Documents folder, the "My documents folder" on windows should be opened. )
I have finally gotten around to installing Ubuntu 10.4, and I really like it, but it does irk me that OpenOffice is installed by default. Is it possible to prevent OpenOffice from being installed?

If the server has been rebooted, I can SSH into it, but I can not VNC into it unless I unlock the keychain. The problem is that I can't figure out how to unlock the keychain from SSH connections, so the only available method is to attach a keyboard to the physical box and enter the keychain password at the server itself.Is there a Terminal command that I can use to unlock the keychain? I have seen references to the 'security' command but that appears to be unavailable to Jaunty?
Is there an even better method than a Terminal command? I don't want to be putting passwords into the Terminal log if I can help it. Ideally, I would connect via SSH, confirm the keychain somehow, and tunnel in through VNC.
This is a bit of an odd one, it's not so much about using Ubuntu but about *not* using Ubuntu. I am just setting up a new computer for my daughter. I have spent days configuring parental controls and lockdowns and such to stop her from being able to view unsuitable content, download programs I don't want, anything that can mess up the computer, etc. etc. At this age I am going to be over her shoulder 100% of the time while she works anyway, but something that occurs to me is that having set up all this control software in Windows, she could actually override the entire thing really easily by booting from a live CD, USB key or similar, she can keep a whole OS in her pocket and I'd never know. You can only watch so much of the time as they grow up.Can I prevent a computer from being capable of booting from external media without some kind of password? How would you begin to go about that?

If I type: sudo update-rc.d -f ssh-agent remove

I want to make a live-USB containing among others both Ubuntu desktop i386 and Ubuntu desktop AMD64. How do I go about this? I tried using unetbootin, first adding i386 and then amd64, but that failed. My computer with an athlon II did manage to boot, and showed it had booted into the 64-bit version (ram shown was 3.9 GB, i386 goes to about 2.7 I think), my wife's computer with a pentium 4 did not manage to boot, got to a black screen. I think this is because casper has issues, being overwritten (I'd seen something to that effect somewhere), and thus only the latest version added being booted (in this case amd 64).
I'm under the impression that the startup disc creator included won't help, nor won't the multicd.sh script, so how do I circumvent the issues?
I have a virtualbox installation on top of CentOS, and I need fairly high security separation between host and guest traffic. The university network the box hangs off uses statically-allocated ip addresses, allocated to fixed MAC addresses (i.e. it eats any traffic with mismatched ip and MAC addresses).
Host OS: CentOS 5.3 64bit
VBox: 3.0.4
Guest OS: Fedora 11 64bit
Hardware: dual NIC, Intel server
Bridged networking, with separate NICs for host and guest
I'm aiming for high-security separation between host and guest traffic. To do this, I would like to to run all host traffic through one NIC, H, and all guest traffic through the other, G. The host and guest have separate, statically allocated, IP addresses, IPH and IPG. The network forces these to be mapped to specific MAC addresses, MACH (the address of NIC H) and MACG (the address of NIC G).
So it's not too hard to write host firewall rules to enforce this policy. The rules just have to state that traffic coming into H must have a destination compatible with IPH, and traffic going out must have IPH as source - and vv for G and IPG. There also don't seem to be any trouble telling the guest to only use NIC G. As a result, turning off NIC G (or equivalently, firewalling it off from host traffic) crashes the network, I have to reboot it to get networking working.
But I can't figure how to tell the host (i.e. CentOS) to _only_ use NIC H for anything else except the guest. Even though we don't see any IPH traffic coming into NIC G from outside, I don't seem to be able to stop the host from starting connections on NIC G. Does anyone know any way to do this - to tell the host that it can only use IPH as its IP address unless traffic is coming from a guest process, and that it can only use address MACH and NIC H?
I've had a couple Ubuntu 8.04 servers hang hard with no terminal response.
After a given time the terminal login screen will go blank automatically. I'd like to prevent that from happening in order to hopefully catch any messages that get output to the screen before these hangs occur. Currently when the server hangs, I can mash the keyboard all I want, the screen stays blank.
I've tried 'setterm -powersave off -blank 0', but that doesn't seem to hold after logout.
I'd like to reconfigure vsftpd so that it does not start on boot (and I can enable/disable it using service vsftpd start/stop).
Though I've seen posts in the forums that stated that upstart jobs can be disabled by moving the /etc/init/job.conf file, other sites commented that the original file will be recreated on updates.
The other two suggestions were to alter the upstart script such that either the process starts on never:
