Ubuntu Installation :: LiveCD Hibernated While Resizing NTFS

Apr 3, 2010

I was installing Ubuntu 9.10 side-by-side on a computer that had Windows XP Pro already on it. I told gparted to start shrinking the NTFS paritition, and about 5 minutes before the read-only test was finished, I shut the lid. Whoops... Forgot to change the power options.

I tell GParted to do a check disk, and gives me the following:

Quote:

It then gives the same error for 65735-65743, and finishes with:

Quote:

Windows of course won't boot, and I won't have access to a Windows XP install disk until Monday night, and there is no floppy drive on the laptop.

Ubuntu :: 11.4 - Mounting Hibernated NTFS Partition

May 29, 2011

I am running 11.4 from a thumb drive, mainly because something is fishy with my main hard drive, but installation is not my reason for this thread (though I think fixing one problem will remedy the other). My winbloze install is short stroked with ~50gb for OS and ~200gb for media storage. I have no problem accessing the storage from windows, but I am unable to mount the storage partition under Ubuntu. I get the following error:

Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 14: Hibernated non-system partition, refused to mount.
Failed to mount '/dev/sda2': Operation not permitted
The NTFS partition is hibernated. Please resume and shutdown Windows properly, or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option, or
mount the volume read-write with the 'remove_hiberfile' mount option.

For example type on the command line:
mount -t ntfs-3g -o remove_hiberfile /dev/sda2 /media/Laptop Storage

When I run that command, I get this:
su: invalid option -- 't'

Ubuntu Installation :: Resizing Windows Partition - Install Files On A Non Windows NTFS Partition

Jul 22, 2010

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)

I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.

Ubuntu :: Grub Fails To Load After Vista Hibernated?

Apr 26, 2010

just installed ubuntu 9.10 besides the existing windows vista partition. Everything worked smoothly. However, after I let vista go into hibernation and then started up the system again, the grub was unable to load. Instead, I got the command prompt 'GRUB rescue'. When I boot from the live CD and try to open the ubuntu partition on 'places' in the desktop environment, I get the message that it cannot be done because windows has hibernated on the other partition, and that I need to delete the hibernation file. What do I do to get the GRUB to load? Now I am stuck with booting from the CD, and I cannot access Vista at all.

I am looking for the log messages where I can find out what time my netbook hibernated?

I have checked in the /var/log. And all I could see was pm-suspend.log and pm-powersave.log.

Is there one which would tell me what time my computer hibernated?

The reason for this is when I go out I leave my netbook running on the battery. When the battery get to about 5% it will hibernate. I just what to see what time it did hibernate?

Ubuntu Installation :: Resizing Partitions After Dualboot?

Aug 17, 2011

I am currently using Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop. I saw Fedora had the new Gnome3, so I decided I might like to try that, My hard drive is about 230GB. Ubuntu currently has all of it, and I would like to make a small partition for Fedora. I know that during the Fedora install you can resize the current Ubuntu partition manually, very simple, gives you the size in MB, and you just shrink it, and Fedora takes up the remaining amount of space.

My actual question here, is how would I, if I should like Fedora 15 more than I thought I would, proceed to shrink the Ubuntu partition more, and increase the one for Fedora?

Ubuntu would have 200GB. Fedora would have 30GB. How do I go from this point, to having Ubuntu use 180GB, and Fedora having 60GB?

I realize there are lots and lots of guides already on the Ubuntu website for help with partitioning etc, but they all seem to be about first time install, or for doing so with windows. All I would like to do is use something like gparted to resize the Ubuntu partitions and expand the Fedora one.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 And XP Dual Boot - Resizing Partitions

Apr 15, 2010

I have a dual boot system 9.10 and XP. The hard drive is 234. For some reason during the install I only allocated 128 to windows and 16 to ubuntu. Or at least, gparted tells me I have 127.99 NTFS and 104 unallocated (=231G ??).

System monitor tells me I have the following:
/dev/loop0 is ext4 = 16 G total
/dec/sda1 is host = 128 G total
this is 134G total

From windows, the partitioner tells me the same. I have 104 of unallocated disk space and 128 of NTFS. I assume the 16G allocated to ubuntu is inside the 128G?. How do I get that additional 104 into ubuntu without screwing up the MFT of windows. Or can I? Is it as simple as telling gparted to format the space? or will that mess windows up?

Ubuntu Installation :: Resizing Won't Work On Boot Partition

Jul 6, 2010

After running Lucid since it's release I decided to wipe out my Karmic partition yesterday in order to utilize that space better elsewhere. So I booted up with the Karmic LiveCD, using the option just to check out Ubuntu. Then I opened up Gparted, unswapped (unmounted) the swap partition, made sure nothing else was mounted, and proceeded to delete my Karmic partition which then provided me with about 40 GB of unused space.

Since I wanted to re-assign 10 of those GB to my primary Ubuntu software partition where I keep all of my personal data, I went ahead and resized that one to make it 10 GB larger. First I had to move the empty space over which took several hours, but that wasn't a problem. Resizing the partition wasn't a problem either. Then I wanted to re-assign the remaining 30 GB to my Ubuntu boot partition which contains strictly my Ubuntu system ... and that's where the problem is.

The remaining unused space on the hard disk is located directly next to my Ubuntu boot partition. No matter what I do while using Gparted via the LiveCD, it doesn't seem to be possible for me to enlarge that boot partition. Does anyone know how I can do this either via Gparted, the Disk Utility from Lucid, or even via the terminal?

Ubuntu Installation :: Moving / Resizing Partitions Win7?

Aug 29, 2010

I have 1 HD with the following OSes, each on his own partition:

p1 WinXP
p2 Win7
p3 Ubuntu
p4 Ubuntu Studio
p5 Unallocated (not actually a partition)

I intended to create a 5th partition, formatted as NTFS, for data. That's when I found out that Windows only supports 4 partitions per disk (yeah, I know, should've looked it up first). On Win7 Disk Management applet, they're all listed as "Primary Partition".

I've come up with a few possible solutions: s1. Move partitions p3 & p4 down towards the end of the HD, and add half of the available space to partition p2 (Win7) and the other half to partition p4 (Ubuntu Studio).

s2. Move partitions p3 & p4 to the end of the HD, and add all available space to partition p2 (Win7).

s3. Increase partition p4 (Ubuntu Studio) to take up all the available space.

My questions:

q1. Win7 Disk Management applet gives me no option to move or resize (other than shrink) the partitions. Does this mean I'll have to use another partition manager (e.g., gparted)?

q2. If I move the partitions p3 & p4 (both Ubuntu), will there be any impact on grub?

q3. Is there any way to turn partition p4 to extended instead of primary? If so, what are the consequences?

The log says only "ubuntu ntfsresize: Please make a test run using both the -n and -s options before real resizing!". Nothing appears to be happening. Is this normal? Never mind, it failed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Win7 Partition Resizing To Free Up Space

Feb 26, 2011

Some months ago I decided to give a chance to this 'Linux thing'. However, being uncertain of the usefulness and friendliness of it all, I decided to keep my Windows 7 partition untouched and just make a 30 Gb partition to "try out" Linux. As it turns out, it's been some 2 months since I last booted Windows and was now wondering if there's a way to "steal" some space from that W7 partition and add it to my Ubuntu one without messing up files. Some kind of major defragmentation, leaving an empty part of the disk which I could "attach" to my Ubuntu partition. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS version.

Debian Installation :: Critical Bug Of "mount -t Ntfs" Cause NTFS Partition Broken

About dual boot system with winxp and lenny.

Storage information:
1st primary:SG 160G ATA 100
1st secondary:WD 160 ATA 133
SATA:WD 1000
2nd primary:DVD
2nd secondary:DVD±RW

Winxp in 1st primary.I did a fresh install of lenny on 1st secondary.

info about lenny setup:
1.Partition list:/boot,/,/home,swap
2.Every partition is XFS except swap.

At the end of installion, lenny installed grub on (hd0) that is 1st primary.

Everything seems OK.Lenny runs OK.

But when I switch back to windows xp,the diskmgmt can not detect hdd's info and the system meets a problem of shutting down.

After many times of trying.
I solved the problem by the following way.
1.Boot with windows xp's install CD and use fixmbr on (hd0).
2.Boot with lenny's install DVD , do a grub>root (1,0)>setup (hd1)
After that,edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change (hd0,0) to (hd1,0) and also (hd1,0) to (hd0,0).
3.Reboot and Press F8 for a boot menu then I can select which disk to boot.
windows boot from 1st primary's mbr, lenny boot from lenny's grub.

The problem is caused by a bug between GRUB and windows' mbr and maybe more about GRUB and XFS.

Ubuntu Installation :: Resizing Partition - Vista Boot Stuck In Loop

Feb 19, 2010

I recently used a GParted CD to resize my partition with Vista installed on it in order to make room for another partition in which I installed Linux onto. I, unfortunately, did not back up my data. My Vista partition now does not show up in Grub and when I set it to just boot to the Vista install it will never boot and is stuck in a loop.

I tried using this guide to try to get it back. My problem comes about halfway through this guide when I go to repair my Vista installation nothing shows up under installations. I would really like to get my data from the Vista partition. I guess if I'm SOL then at least I'll remember to backup my data next time..

Fedora Installation :: 30 GB LVM Partition By Just Resizing Part Of The Volume?

Sep 1, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu for about a year and I decided to switch to Fedora just to see how it goes with getting everything in my system working again. I would say that with Ubuntu and Fedora installations I have installed and reinstalled 15 times, which I mention because I am not new to installing linux. I have used GParted to partition and resize my HD numerous times and reinstalled linux on a partition and so on. I know how to do all of that without any problems.

NOW HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED... I installed Fedora on my Desktop which I had partitioned into a 190 GB partition onto which Windows is installed and then I had another 30 GB partition onto which I chose to install Fedora. I chose the "replace existing Linux systems" in anaconda... and what resulted was a 30 GB partition with Fedora that is now showing up as LVM. I have never seen an LVM partition and I am not sure if I can use GPARTED to resize it without destroying it. I have used GPARTED to resize Linux partitions before, but they were never showing up as LVM. The forums on GPARTED only show info from about a year or two ago.

Here is what I want to do (and reading around on forums doesn't really give a good explanation of whether it is possible)... Is it possible to install Linux Mint into that 30 GB Fedora LVM partition by just resizing the Fedora part of the volume? So, the question is this: How can I resize the Fedora part of the LVM volume and then install Mint into that LVM partition?

If Fedora was on an ordinary 30 GB partition I would have no problem with using GPARTED to chop that in half and then use the 15 GB I freed up to install Mint. I just don't want to destroy the Fedora stuff by messing around the with the LVM partition so I would like to hear from others who have worked around this issue and please don't link to the ordinary LVM howto's you get through a simple google search as I have already read them and I don't find them too illuminating.

Ubuntu Installation :: LiveCD Starts Installation By Itself And Stops At Error / Fix It/

Jun 30, 2010

A friend of mine has asked me to install Ubuntu for a long time. Today I set up his partitions with Lucid LiveCD and GParted.

However, the LiveCd throws an error that makes me hesitant to continue.

If I boot a LiveCD on my computer I get a question meaning "run Live or install?"

This question does not appear on my friends computer. The first thing you see (about 2 min after boot) is an alertpanel saying something like "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. We will now set up a desktop environment so you can investigate the problem." After that the normal Lucid (Live) desktop appears and functions well, as far as I can understand.

Sorry for not being able to give more data about my friends system. It is a stationary computer about 2 yrs old, running XP. I can't really make investigations on his system either. I had hoped to go there next time and just install Lucid.

Maybe one should try the alternate installer, but my friend just got used to the LiveCD and I would therefore like to use the LiveCD.

I don't understand why it seems to start installation by itself.

Most of all. I wonder if it is a good idea to run the installation from the desktop icon? Maybe it will encounter the same error that the LiveCd seems to encounter at startup?

Debian Installation :: Resizing Drive During Install Leaves Empty Space Unusable

Sep 12, 2015

I just bought a new HP desktop, and I want to install Debian on the hard drive. I ran the Windows program on the Debian CD to start the install.

I selected Manual drive setting, and resized the large C: partition to 50 GB. I want to install Debian in some of the free space, only their isn''t any free space! The 400+ GB I took out of the C: partition is labeled "unusable" instead of "free space."

If I double click the unusable space, I am just given the cylinder/head/sector numbers. How I can make that space usable?

I would boot my Gparted CD, but I don't know how to get to the BIOS. The boot screen goes right to Windows without showing me the key to get to the BIOS. I tried hitting DEL, but to no effect. Do you know what the HP computers use to interrupt the boot?

So the outline is that I want to install the Live CD to my USB, have at least 1GB of persistence and I'm also thinking of transferring some essential packages to the persistence/flash, like samba etc.
