Ubuntu Installation :: Neither 10.10 CD Or USB Install Works

Dec 5, 2010

This is an existing bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/636711) but since there doesn't seem to be too much happening over there, I thought I'd post this development here to see if anyone can make something out of it. Basically, any attempt to launch a (MDSUM-confirmed) CD or USB image of 10.10 will fail on certain computers. The install process fails, leaving a message like:

Quote: mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on /filesystem.squashfs failed: input/output error

Now here's the new development. I have two nearly identical Compaq Evo desktops at the office and one fails as above while the other loads and installs 10.10 perfectly (using the same USB disk). I would imagine that this would make a good test case for the bug, so I've posted the lshw output from both machines (one running 10.10 and other running 8.10) here [URL]

Ubuntu Installation :: LiveCD Works But Does Not Install

Nov 14, 2010

If I run Ubuntu 10.4 LIVE from CD everything works fine. However, when I try to install, it hangs up at about 23% (while installing Firefox). I thought my HD had a problem, but the same happened after checking it had no bad sectors and even after replacing it. Same as above using a CD of version 8.4 ( live works, install doesn't complete). Same trying the Alternate in place of the Desktop edition. With the same CD's I already installed successfully on other machines. Booting from USB SHOULD be possible ( according to BIOS settings ) but apparently it doesn't work.

Present machine characteristics :
AMD Athlon 2200+ 1.8 Ghz
512 MB RAM
HD EIDE 40 GB (Master of the Primary channel)
BIOS AMI dated 13-05-2003
Motherboard : no brand
Two EIDE CD drives (as Master and Slave of the Secondary channel).

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD, Upgrade And Install Fail On 9.10 And 10.04 - 9.04 Works?

May 23, 2010

My first upgrade attempt to 9.10 ruined my install - there was no return and as 9.10 would not install either, I reinstalled 9.04 and everything was as expected.I decided to wait for 10.04 hoping the issue had been solved - unluckily it has NOT. Neither Live CD 9.10 nor 10.04 work. New Mint does not work either - to closely related to Ubuntu, but Suse live CD does. Played around with findings from different threads - like taking out "quiet splash --" and adding modprob parameter to no avail Prime suspect is HD and HD controller (ATA/PATA) - but I could not nail it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD Works But No Display After Install / Solution For This?

Oct 10, 2010

I have this problem where the 10.10 LiveCD 64-bit works (as in I get full resolution display and no video issues at all). But after install, the OS boots successfully but there's no display. I know it's successful because I was able to login in the dark (sound works).

Here's what I have:
HP m9340f (NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS with HDMI)
46" Sharp connected via HDMI
Windows 7, works fine.

Here's what I tried with no luck:
1. CTRL-ALT-F1 still doesn't show anything on screen, no terminal
2. Connected via VGA
3. Connected another 17" monitor via VGA, rebooted
4. Added vga=789 in grub before booting

The weird thing is that I had 10.04 before and it was working for a while then it suddenly stopped working. I figured I'd wait until 10.10 but I now have the same issue. I haven't tried 32-bit... I can give that a shot in a bit.

Feb 6, 2011

Im trying to install Ubuntu, here are my problems and the solutions ive tried: I've downloaded 10.10 in 64 bit and 32 bit. I've also tried with 10.4.1 LTS.I've tried burning it to a disc and i've tried making a bootable USB. (I ran out of dvds so im only trying from usb now).I load from the disc/USB and ill get the menu asking if i want to try ubuntu, install ubuntu, check for errors etc..... I choose try ubuntu and ill get the UBUNTU logo with the loading dots undernieth. The screen then glitches and theres multicolor lines frozen accross the monitor. Stuck that way until i restart. This also happens when i try to install it to the harddrive. It happens on both versions in both 64 and 32 bit. I checked the disc and all files are present.I've had ubuntu installed over a year ago.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Bootup After Install But LiveCD Works Great

Feb 10, 2011

No Bootup just a Black Screen with a frozen cursor after install, but LIVE CD works in 1024x768 mode? Well, I have a Sony Bravia 32xTV with HDMI input coming out of a ZOTAC nvidia type of card. The live CD will recognize the HDMI graphics card and Sony TV/monitor and thus works like Ubuntu normally does. But when I go to install to a hard drive and try to boot up I get just a Black Screen with a frozen cursor. I even have another Ubuntu 8.04 version running on the Sony Bravia TV , so no problem with TV end of things. what do I do now, oh great Ubuntu gurus out there in cyberland? what could I possibly do , what do I read, where do I go , what, where, who, how, when ,which way?

Installation :: Linux Install Works / Can't Access Windows As Before

Jun 15, 2010

I had some issues with Wubi installations of Ubuntu, so I figured out how to create a LiveCD and to install from the CD. I am working on Linux now and I am having no issues as far as the Penguin goes. I hash-checked the iso and used older CDs more suited for booting.I chose to install from the CD, and I selected the option which partitions and installs Linux alongside Windows. I was prompted to import some user folders from my Windows Vista, and I agreed. These appeared in Linux and also work fine.

However, after a few hours of messing with my new Linux, I restarted and I realized all I have in my boot menu now are some Linux options, memory test, and a Vista loader & vista recovery. I had intended to have a dual boot system. Did I delete my Windows without meaning to, or can I change the bootloading process somehow to include both Linux and Vista?

Upon selecting the Vista Loader, I was asked if I wanted to recover my files, etc. I refrained because I wasn't sure what the effect would be on Linux. Is there a way to have both Vista and Linux show up normally in my boot menu, or will I have to go back and forth recovering every time I chose to use the other OS?The only reason I still want to use Windows occasionally is because I had Maple software in Windows which was useful for school.

Ubuntu Networking :: LinuxWiMAX - Firmware Installation - Modem Works Fine But Failing To Install Drivers

May 17, 2011

I switched from windows to Ubuntu 10.10. But I'm not getting along with it as well as I expected I would Specially cause I'm not getting the best out of it due to limited web connectivity. I used to use a usb WiMax modem back in windows (which is also supposed to be supported by linux as my service provider said) for internet. But I'm having a hard time configuring it on my Ubuntu. The modem works fine but I'm failing to install the drivers [url]. I used my cell as a temporary modem to get help from the web.

I downloaded:-
i2400m firmware 1.5.0
WiMAX Tools 1.4.5
WiMAX Network Service 1.5.2

According to the documentation, I'm supposed to install the linux kernel 2.6.35 which Maverick comes with anyway.

Then comes the part to install the firmware. The command I used was

But unfortunately and annoyingly the result is

I didn't get it. Am I missing any package or something?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.04 Works But 9.10+ Not Works

Jan 23, 2011

well I'll start by SPECS.

Processor: amd phenom II 965 BE
Motherboard: M4N78 PRO (Asus) newest bios
Memory: Corsair 2gb DDR2 800mhz X2 (4GB)
Video Card: Radeon 5750 1GB
Power: 620W Corsair.
HD: 320GB

I use the TV + HDMI cable. Versions tested 32BITS/64BITS (stay with x64) has no disk error. already downloaded several times. MD5 is correct well ... I'll start here with my concerns ... version 9.04 onwards does not work gives blackscreen. I think "forgotten" by the generic drivers for ATI or something that influences the video. it does not show. 9.10,10.04,10.10 none of those versions worked ... on other computers functioned normally. I found researching how to dribble and go to live. and thus unable to install. but does not work after the pc restarts. Linux does not. shows nothing ... goes to black screen with the (- FLASHING) but nothing else happens.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 Net Install Works But Internet Connection Test Fails?

I just installed 11.4 via the net install cd. In the configuration step, the internet connection test fails. Why would this happen if I just installed opensuse using the internet? Let's see if internet works once I'm logged in...

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Only Works Once After Install?

I can load bcmwl-kernel-source from the software center, restart and my wifi works for that startup. If I restart my computer again, it no longer works. I can then remove bcmwl-kernel-source and reinstall it and it works just once again.I have blacklisted b43 and ssblsmod reveals that these modules are missing after restart when wifi doesn't work:

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 - Seems To Be OK But Nothing WORKS

Oct 10, 2010

I'm installing 10.10 netbook on an older Pavilion ze5500, and the install process finishes, asks me to reboot, ect. After reboot, everything goes swimmingly until I try to move the mouse over the sidebar or toolbar at the top, where the screen flashes to black, then just the wallpaper, then the full GUI loads again as if I had just logged in. This repeats over and over until I tapped the power button, then I worked my way to the restart button on-screen, and the system restarted just fine.

Ubuntu Installation :: 17 - 14-generic On GRUB - Only 14 - Works

Jan 27, 2010

I've played about with Live CD's and sort of got it working on a PS3, but that's about it. Now, my problem.

Basically, what happened is that I installed Ubuntu 9.10, and then I installed whatever updates it wanted, and then ...17-generic pops up, but doesn't do anything other than load up a terminal type thing full screen.

Here's everything GRUB says.

Quote:

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be part of the updates I did, but to be completely honest I'm not even slightly certain.

I don't know if there's any more info you'd need from me about my computer, but if there is could you tell me how to find it.

So the questions I'm asking really: Is meant to be an updated version? and if so, How do I make it do what it's meant to do?

After installing Ubuntu my Windows XP BSOD's on startup. I have posted in a Windows forum, but they seem to be terrified that I've used the word "Ubuntu" or maybe I'm being plain impatient. Do you know of anywhere which specialises in dual-boot problems or something? Thanks again

Ubuntu Installation :: Buggies During Boot-up / OS Still Works Though

May 19, 2010

I have been using ubuntu and kubuntu now for about 2-3 years non-stop, and I was originally a windoze user, so please bare with me.. I'm not a god at this stuff. The previous couple of versions of ubuntu I have been using, have had a few glitches after their immediate initial releases, so I have come to the conclusion now whenever a new release is made there will be issues for a while until someone figures them out.As I am sure most of your are aware, during bootup of either ubuntu 10.04 or kubuntu 10.04,we will catch little bugs .. they will interupt the new plymouth splash theme for a moment, and then the system will boot as a normally. Kubuntu was a little worse, after using remastersys to create a bootable live disc.. It seems that during the bootup of the live disc which I have created with remastersys using originally a fresh install of Kubuntu I see "Bios xxxx-xxxx errors" (I'm not 100% sure what they say, because they go by pretty fast) and I just don't know how to freeze the screen long enough to report exactly what is telling to repeat them here.. The bug that I get normally during bootup of Ubuntu is "Glib error" something to do with "non valid user".. Every-time I have installed it on my system or Virtualbox from a fresh install - after doing the updates and putting everything on it that I normally like to have for applications and codecs etc, I will start to see errors eventually creep into the Plymouth boot splash process. And I guess if there is no solution at this point, I would like to keep the 10.04 and revert back to 9.10's splash screen and back to when there were no errors.. Is this because of the new graphical drivers in 10.04? Any idea why is it is bad?

I doubt for some reason that I am the only user with these issues on a fresh install of either Ubuntu of Kubuntu, and I just want to know to know if there is anything I can do to help? I don't seem to find maybe people out there reporting this.. Maybe for the fact that we can't stop the screen from progressing to the next stage of bootup long enough to copy the errors to post them here. I don't know, but AFAIK the last version of ubuntu and kubuntu didn't have these problems with bootup.. Maybe with flash.. or maybe with something else. And many of those previous problem with solved with work-around, and just using different software or drivers or whatever.Again is there anything I can do to help? And how to stop the screen long enough to copy down my hand the errors I am catching during bootup? Or is there already a solution at this point to switch back to a older splash from 9.10 available, because in my opinion, the system is running flawlessly for my purposes, except the splash screen is coping errors I have never seen before since I first began using Ubuntu or Kubuntu
